‘Hunger Games’: The Memes That Caught Fire

This week’s Hobnobbing celebrates Seneca Crane’s beard, Peeta’s advice and more Web wonders. By Amy Wilkinson Wes Bentley as Seneca Crane in “The Hunger Games” Photo: Lionsgate Three years can feel like an eternity. That’s how long ” The Hunger Games ” fans will have sat around sharpening their arrows between Lionsgate purchasing the film rights to Suzanne Collins’ novel and the movie ultimately swooping into theaters March 23. But it’s also been a productive 36 or so months for the series’ acolytes, evidenced by the plethora of Panem-centric memes that have cropped up online to amuse, inform and enthrall. From Seneca Crane’s beard to Katniss’ orange backpack, let’s celebrate the things that have made this infernal wait a little less painful. (Special thanks to Twitter friends who sent in their recommendations.) Seneca Crane’s beard Wes Bentley’s flame-shaped fuzz was destined for Internet infamy. Following the debut of “The Hunger Games” full-length trailer, the stylized scruff seemed to be one of the hottest topics of conversation. A Facebook page (and insightful interview with Hollywood Crush ) followed, proving the beard had staying power — even if it didn’t stay on Bentley’s face forever. “I would have loved to have kept the beard, but that beard took two hours to groom every day,” he told MTV News. “It’s such a cool look. Ve Neill, the makeup designer, did such an amazing job. It’s exciting that it’s getting that kind of attention.” Advice Peeta Peeta is the wisest baker’s son we know. Need proof? Take a gander at Advice Peeta , recommended by @TheHobOrg, where the disembodied head of Josh Hutcherson dispenses pithy platitudes and nuggets of wisdom. “Remember who the real enemy is: Panera,” one reads, while another declares, “I set fireeeeeee to the bread.” Aw, Peeta’s an Adele fan! We knew it. Lord Buttercup District 12’s male tribute isn’t the only character pontificating online. Even Prim’s mangy tomcat is getting in on the action. Similarly styled to Advice Peeta, Lord Buttercup , recommended by @mirandahakim, has plenty to say too, like “I am the Mockingjay. LOL JK I’m a cat.” The busy feline also manages his own Twitter account, @LordButtercup. Because the revolution needs social-media-minded mongrels. Effie’s shoes One of the newer (and perhaps less prevalent) memes, recommended by @HGgirlonfire, is a foot fetishist’s best friend. Effie Trinket’s gold booties (supposedly fashioned after an Alexander McQueen design ) made their debut on the recently launched Capitol Couture . And our shoe envy will never be the same. Katniss’ orange backpack Clearly, “Hunger Games” fans are a fashion-conscious bunch, because when the first “Hunger Games” teaser debuted, and it appeared Katniss’ bright backpack had been replaced by a duller version, die-hards were not pleased. Thankfully, further peeks have confirmed that the fiery bag, which Katniss grabs at the beginning of the Games, is indeed a player. And, as recommended by @pikko, it continues to be celebrated on Facebook . What’s your favorite “Hunger Games” meme? Watch Taylor Swift’s Hunger Games Music Video: ‘Safe & Sound’

When I first heard Taylor Swift ‘s Hunger Games soundtrack single, the twangy country ballad “Safe & Sound,” I wasn’t so keen on how Swifty channeled teen heroine Katniss Everdeen, T-Bone Burnett’s support or no. (I did, however, dig the gentle melodics of country folk duo The Civil Wars, who back Swift on the song and share songwriting credits with her and Burnett.) Now the music video for the single has debuted, a dreamy nature-themed joint that lovingly follows Swift as she traipses barefoot around the woods sharing meaningful glances with deer and twigs. While “Safe & Sound” has grown on me as a song, I still can’t totally sign off on Swift as a Katniss figure (the lyrics are inspired by Suzanne Collins’ book, and suggest the inner life of Katniss as she leaves her family behind in District 12 to fight in the Games). But Swift is lovely to look at, even if this video could easily be passed off as an Anthropologie ad or, you know, a tribute to Cold Mountain . The backdrop is a nice nod to Katniss’s imagined home in the region otherwise known as the Appalachians, where District 12 has been delineated in the nation of Panem in The Hunger Games trilogy. And, look! Swift finds a mockingjay pin in her disheveled country cabin! I’d have loved to have seen Swift pick up a bow and arrow and go hunt down that deer, or hide from intruders in the dirt, or wrassle with a gang of murderous youngsters, but I get it. She’s Taylor Swift. She is pristine in her white muslin dress, warbling beautiful melodies all alone in her thoughtful solitude. She is more Primrose than Katniss. Meanwhile, the shortest stick drawn goes to Joy Williams of The Civil Wars, who’s stuck playing third fiddle to Swift. For a full minute I thought she was playing Katniss’s near-catatonic mother. Anyways, check it out below and tell us what you think – an appropriate accompaniment to the March 23 pic? Is ‘Hunger Games’ YA’s Best Chance For A Best Picture Oscar?

As Harry Potter weathers his final Academy snub, Hobnobbing wonders if Katniss Everdeen can carry the genre’s mantle. By Amy Wilkinson Jennifer Lawrence in “The Hunger Games” Photo: Lionsgate ” The Hunger Games ” star Jennifer Lawrence set aside her flaming bow and arrow in favor of a gilded envelope Tuesday morning to announce the 2012 Oscar nominations alongside Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Tom Sherak. And sadly — though not entirely surprisingly for young-adult-literature aficionados — the “Harry Potter” franchise was once again (and for the final time) overlooked for a Best Picture nomination . Which raises the question: Does the Academy have something against YA adaptations?* Curiously, adaptations have historically been strong performers at the Academy Awards. Past statuettes have gone to the literary likes of “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” and “Silence of the Lambs.” And this year’s contenders are no different. Six of the nine Best Picture nominees, including “The Descendants,” “Hugo,” “The Help,” “Moneyball,” “War Horse” and “Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close,” can be found lining the shelves of your local Barnes & Noble, while five of last year’s 10 nominees were also based on bound works, according to USA Today. The side of the equation, then, troubling Academy voters seems to be the “young adult” variable. Though to be fair, there’s not much of a precedent for awards recognition seeing as mining teen lit for film fodder is a relatively new phenomenon. Sure, there are exceptions like S.E. Hinton’s “The Outsiders” (made into a film all the way back in 1983, starring Matt Dillon and Patrick Swayze), but for every “Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist” or “The Princess Diaries” there are tens (if not hundreds) of seminal works, like “The Catcher in the Rye” or “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret,” languishing in pre-production hell or undeserved obscurity as far as film financiers are concerned. Which leaves us with “The Hunger Games,” the latest YA sensation, which blazes into theaters in less than two months. And while it’s hard to predict the awards-season viability of a movie we haven’t even seen yet, there are at least a few indicators to suggest it could be the first YA novel adaptation to win (or at the very least be nominated for) Best Picture. For one, Oscar’s already made acquaintance with many members of the cast and crew. Our friends at NextMovie crunched the numbers, discovering that the actors and technical experts behind “The Hunger Games” boast 30 Oscar nominations — even Effie Trinket couldn’t turn her nose up at that. And while a film like “Twilight” (which, let’s be honest, won’t be sharing a feather-strewn canopy bed with the Academy anytime soon) focuses on a fantastical, star-crossed-lovers plotline, “The Hunger Games” deals more seriously with issues of life, death and government control, likely giving it more credence with voters. Though most of the above could surely have been said of “Harry Potter,” it apparently wasn’t meant to be. Hopefully with “The Hunger Games” (and the slew of approximately 4 million teen novels in various stages of adaptation ) the Academy will begin recognizing artful YA adaptations as the deserving films that they are. Because we already do. Do you think “The Hunger Games” is blazing a path for YA novel adaptations? Sound off in the comments below and tweet me @amymwilk with your thoughts and suggestions for future columns! *Whether, in fact, “Harry Potter” constitutes YA is a topic of much debate in and of itself, though for the sake of this piece, I assert that the final novel’s dark tone and subject matter secure its spot at the teen table. Final Poster for The Hunger Games: Released! Awesome!

With just over two months to go until the release of The Hunger Games , Lionsgate has released the final poster for this sure-to-be blockbuster. It features Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen and it’s just as awesome as all other promotional material so far: But while the excitement over The Hunger Games builds each day, and while its core audience may also be comprised of teenage girls, Josh Hutcherson recently spoke to E! News and stopped the comparisons to another franchise right then and there. “I’m not a huge fan of the comparisons to Twilight just because I think it’s a very different world,” the actor behind Peeta said. “I understand why people make the connection just because it’s a popular teen book… but the story is really more about Katniss and her survival. There’s definitely less romance.” Find out for yourself on March 23 when Suzanne Collins’ novel hits the big screen.

‘Hunger Games’ Sequel Recruits Writer Simon Beaufoy

‘Slumdog Millionaire’ scribe takes over ‘Catching Fire.’ By Kevin P. Sullivan Jennifer Lawrence and Liam Hemsworth in “Hunger Games” Photo: Lions Gate Back in November, Deadline reported that Lionsgate already had a short list of writers they wanted to pen the sequel to “The Hunger Games.” According to the report, Simon Beaufoy, the writer behind the Academy Award-winning “Slumdog Millionaire” script, topped the list. Now the Los Angeles Times is reporting that not only has Beaufoy signed on to write “Catching Fire,” but that director Gary Ross will return as well. There had been no direct confirmation that Ross would return, and until “The Hunger Games” comes out, there probably won’t be, but as things stand, Ross will likely direct. Ross and author Suzanne Collins originally planned to reteam for the “Catching Fire” script, after having collaborated on the “Hunger Games” screenplay. Postproduction work on the first film and the looming proposed release date for the second didn’t allow Ross to begin work on the sequel. Beaufoy, whose other writing credits include “127 Hours” and “The Full Monty,” will adapt Collins’ book, with Ross overseeing. There are four films planned for the three-book series. The final book, “Mockingjay,” will likely be split into two flicks if the producers stick to their original plan. The first film of the series — starring Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth — is scheduled for release March 23. For now, “Catching Fire” is scheduled to hit theaters November 22, 2013. The stars of “The Hunger Games” are all expected to return, per sequel clauses in their contracts. Josh Hutcherson Is One To Watch In 2012

‘I’m excited for ‘The Hunger Games’ to come out and see how that does and hopefully get started on the second one,’ up-and-comer tells us. By Kara Warner Josh Hutcherson in “The Hunger Games” Photo: Lionsgate It’s no secret that we’ve been keeping close tabs on soon-to-be superstar Josh Hutcherson . After his noteworthy performance in critical darling “The Kids Are All Right” last year, followed by his casting in the coveted role of Peeta Mellark in “The Hunger Games,” we are very interested in what Hutcherson is up to these days. 2012 is poised to be Hutcherson’s biggest year yet, beginning with “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island,” co-starring Vanessa Hudgens and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. “Journey 2” opens in theaters February 10, and less than a month later we’ll welcome the release of “The Hunger Games.” We’re not the only ones excited for the big-screen version of Suzanne Collins’ best-seller. “The Hunger Games” is holding steady as one of the most anticipated movies of the year as voted by you, the fans over at our Movie Brawl . So it’s easy to see why Hutcherson is “One to Watch” this year. MTV News recently caught up with the 18-year-old to talk about his big year. “2012 is going to be a really big year, I’m looking forward to it,” Hutcherson said. “[There’s going to be] a lot of press, a lot of traveling with that. I’m excited for ‘The Hunger Games’ to come out and see how that does and hopefully get started on the second one.” In addition to acting, Hutcherson also revealed that he hopes to one day work behind the camera in addition to in front of it. “I want to get into directing and producing and writing my own stuff at some point. I’m kind of just tiptoeing into that as well,” he said. Our “One to Watch” has mentioned actors such as Christian Bale, Jake Gyllenhaal and Ryan Gosling as career role models with regard to the careful choices they’ve made in choosing films. “It’s all about balance; everything in life is about balance, in my opinion,” Hutcherson said . “You have to do the big studio movies to keep people caring about you in a way, and also for me, I’ve been really fortunate. I haven’t done any big studio movies that suck. They’ve all been good material and that’s the most important thing for my career, to choose the right material and to choose the characters that I care about and stories I want to tell. So that’s kind of how I’ve gone about my career since I was 9, more or less.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Hunger Games.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Snooki Dyes Hair Red, Flaunts Cleavage

Jersey Shore Season Five kicks off this week, and star Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi is marking the occasion by taking her long locks in a new, fiery direction: red. “Sneaky peak! I went mega red! My @BradleyStyleNYC is genius!” the 24-year-old Tweeted to the 3,920,728 people who follow her for reasons unknown. Based on the Snooki photos she and other sites posted, she appears to have lightened her all-over shade and added bold red highlights and extensions. Hair isn’t the only thing Polizzi has changed. In recent weeks, her weight loss has been well documented, with Snooks slimming down to 98 pounds. Crazy. Anyway, what do you think of Snooki’s red hair?
