‘Paranormal Activity 3’: 10 Secrets Revealed

Directors Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman tease some things to look out for in the horror threequel. By Eric Ditzian “Paranormal Activity 3” Photo: Paramount Pictures Last October, on the day “Paranormal Activity 2” hit theaters, director Tod Williams stopped by the MTV Newsroom to reveal five secrets about the horror sequel — everything from the best way to break a person’s leg to why the baby in the film is possibly the greatest actor in all of Hollywood. Another year, another “PA” flick — and even more secrets revealed. The morning after a raucous screening in New York City, “Paranormal Activity 3” directors Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman paid us a visit and gave up the goods. Read on for 10 “Paranormal” secrets, then check back on Monday for their answers to a ton of our burning questions — queries that were simply too spoiler-filled to reveal before fans have had a chance to see the film for themselves (be aware, though, that there are mild spoilers below) . The Fan Camera A key issue in any found-footage movie is finding creative ways for characters to film the action. That issue becomes especially thorny three pictures into a franchise. How do you keep things fresh in a “Paranormal” flick, a series that largely confines each story to one house, the demon-haunting action captured with camcorders set up in various rooms? Joost and Schulman, along with screenwriter Christopher B. Landon, came up with a new technique that opens up an entirely new way of viewing events that is at once simple and totally scare-inducing: a camera mounted on the base of a swiveling fan. The idea was one Joost and Schulman used when they first discussed the gig with Paramount. “It’s like, ‘How would we do it if there were a ghost in our office and we only had one camera? How would we capture the whole thing?’ ” explained Joost. “We were like, ‘Would we put it on a model train and have it go around the house?’ We would put up mirrors to see stuff, or this fan idea. It turned out Chris Landon, the writer of the movie, had basically the same idea, independently of us. So when we got together for this first time, it was like, ‘Oh great, you want to do that too!’ ” The Sex Tape For “PA3,” it wasn’t just about new ways of capturing the action, but of new action to capture. That’s why you’ll see the making of the first-ever sex tape in the new “Paranormal,” one between the two central adults in the film, mother Julie (Lauren Bittner) and live-in boyfriend Dennis (Christopher Nicholas Smith). “The president of Paramount [Adam Goodman] was like, ‘I want to do a sex tape this time,’ ” Schulman said. “They always tease it in the ‘Paranormal’ movies, and at this point, everyone’s inclined to think they’re not going to do it. [Dennis] is going to ask her to film it and she’s going to say no and they’re going to turn the camera off, or she’ll say yes and they’ll turn it off right away. [Goodman] was like, ‘I want to take it there.’ It gets pretty uncomfortable. It’s like a real sex tape, which is awkward.” The Filmmaker Cameos Though they spent the great majority of their time behind the scenes, Joost and Schulman actually make cameos in the film — though you’d never be able to tell unless they hadn’t revealed the secret to us. Without diving too much into spoilers, let’s just say that at one point you see what might be a young girl or a demon hiding under a white sheet — that old clich

Justin Bieber Hopes To Shoot A Movie By Summer

His team is already ‘working on the script,’ Bieber tells MTV News. By Kara Warner, with reporting by James Montgomery Justin Bieber Photo: MTV News Although most of Justin Bieber ‘s time revolves around his music career (he has not one, but two albums in the works ), the young entrepreneur also seems to have designs on a career in Hollywood. Yes, he already hit the big screen with last year’s box-office success “Never Say Never,” but that film was unscripted and a biopic of sorts. When MTV News caught up with Bieber recently during the “MTV First” premiere of his “Mistletoe” video , he revealed that although he has a lot on his plate, he wants to make time to make a movie. “What’s happening is: get off this tour, and then my [holiday] album’s coming out, so I have to go back out and promote that album … and then after that … it’s almost time for my next album, so then everything starts over again,” Bieber told us. “Hopefully next summer I can start on a movie or something,” he snuck in. And although Bieber didn’t divulge exactly what kind of movie he wants to do, he did say that his team is “working on the script.” The 17-year-old teen heartthrob has expressed an interest in pursuing an acting career, particularly after he guest-starred on “CSI” last year, where he received praise from the show’s executive producer and managed to impress everyone in the cast with his work ethic. Bieber has also said he’d love to try out his comedic skills. “[I want] to do a comedy with Will Ferrell, like play his son or something like that,” Bieber said, adding, “What’s up, Will?” What kind of movie role would you like to see Justin in? Taylor Swift Says 2012 Album Is ‘About Moving On’

The 10 songs she’s written so far are ‘sad, if I’m being honest,’ she tells The New Yorker. By Jocelyn Vena Taylor Swift Photo: Jordan Strauss/ Getty Images It’s been almost a year since Taylor Swift released the chart-topping Speak Now, which included the hits “Mine” and “Back to December.” Fans won’t have to wait much longer for the next country-crossover hits: Swift’s next album is due sometime in 2012. During an interview with The New Yorker, Swift said she recently decided that life is “about achieving contentment … you’re not always going to be ridiculously happy” — and that newly discovered viewpoint is leaking into her new music. Throughout her career, we’ve seen Swift grow from a wide-eyed girl who sings about puppy love to a been-there, done-that young woman who understands heartbreak. Her new songs certainly fit into the progression. “They’re sad, if I’m being honest,” she said of the 10 songs she’s written so far, adding that a recent track she wrote “is about moving on.” Of her abilities as a vocalist, Swift said singing is really just the vehicle to get her ideas out into the world. “I write songs, and my voice is just a way to get those lyrics across,” she said. In an interview with MTV News earlier this year, Swift said her ability to express her feelings in song has grown nearly as much as she has as a person. “I think retrospect will tell a lot. Years from now, I’ll look back and go, ‘I didn’t know anything then,’ ” she said. “I had this song called ‘Picture to Burn’ that’s talking about how ‘I hate your truck’ and ‘I hate that you ignored me,’ ‘I hate you,’ ” she explained. “Now, the way that I would say that and the way that I would feel that kind of pain is a lot different.” Until Swift does put out new music, her fans can look forward to a concert album and DVD special called “Speak Now World Tour – Live,” dropping November 21. It will include live versions of tracks like “Mine,” “Story of Us,” “Mean” and Back to December.” What are you expecting from Taylor Swift’s new music? Let us know in the comments! Where Will Bruno Mars’ ‘Rain’ Fall In ‘Breaking Dawn’?

MTV News takes a closer listen to ‘It Will Rain’ for lyrical clues about its placement in the film. By Jocelyn Vena and Amy Wilkinson Bruno Mars Photo: Jemal Countess/Getty Images On Tuesday (September 27), Bruno Mars dropped the sweeping, heartbreaking “It Will Rain,” the lead single from the “Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1” soundtrack , which drops November 8. The Smeezingtons-produced song is all about the pain someone feels when they are deeply in love. On it, Mars croons tortured lines like “There’s no religion that could save me/ No matter how long my knees are on the floor/ So keep in mind all the sacrifices I’m making/ To keep you by my side/ And keep you from walking out the door.” While Twilighters will have to wait until November 18 to find out where the song will be featured in the flick, there are several lyrical cues that offer hints. Hit play on the embedded video as we talk through the song, then read on for a deeper exploration. The Wedding Of course it won’t appear in the actual wedding scene, like when Bella walks down the aisle, but lines like “I’ll never be your mother’s favorite/ Your daddy can’t even look me in the eye/ If I was in their shoes I’d be doing the same/ Say, ‘There goes my little girl/ Walking with that troublesome guy’ ” certainly mirror Charlie’s feelings about the nuptials. Jacob’s Goodbye When Mars sings, “Don’t you say goodbye/ Don’t you say goodbye/ I’ll pick up these broken pieces till I’m bleeding/ If that’ll make it right,” it seems to mimic the heartbreak Jacob feels as he sees Bella marry another man and says goodbye to her once more. The Honeymoon Sure, the song is about heartbreak and pain, but the sexy, sultry nature of the track could make for the right kind of mood-setter as Bella and Edward finally get it on. The Pregnancy As Mars cries, ” ‘Cause there’ll be no sunlight/If I lose you, baby/ There’ll be no clear skies/ If I lose you, baby/ And just like the clouds, my eyes will do the same/ If you walk away, every day it’ll rain,” it mirrors Edward’s angst as he thinks he might lose Bella if she has their child, a vampire/human hybrid. Touring With Alicia Keys Inspired Melanie Fiona’s “The MF Life” Sound

Read more:

Melanie Fiona is gearing up to release her sophomore album The MF Life on October 25th. She is determined to prove that she is not a one hit wonder. Melanie is taking her craft very serious.  She recently sat down with Jae Ink for a Q&A for Ammo Magazine. She talks Touring with Alicia Keys and Kanye West, acting and what we can expect from The MF Life . JI: You have a new album coming titled ‘The MF Life’; in an interview you stated the album as being “stadium soul.” Explain what that means. What can fans expect from this album? MF: I fell in love with the sound of my music being played in big arenas when I went on tour with Kanye West & Alicia Keys. I became addicted to that feeling, so I just wanted my music loud and I wanted these songs to be big & I wanted them to be full and feel like they could fill an arena. I’m a big fan of live instrumentation so it was pretty much taking it to another level off the first album and just making this album something big. JI: Who are some of the collaborators on the new album? MF: I haven’t finished what will be on the album yet, but I’ve been in the studio working with Andrew Martin, Los, Jerry Wonder, Salon Remy, Jack Flash, and Chuck Harmony. Its been really good I’ve been getting all my creative juices & getting all my ideas of what I want this album to be about. I’m trying new things & I’m also writing with John Legend. JI: Your first single “Gone and Never Coming Back”, you sing about love lost in a relationship, did this song come from personal experience? MF: Everything I write about, sing about or perform about is always about life. A lot of the things I go through its always what we all go through and I feel like “Gone and Never Coming Back” absolutely comes from personal experience. I’ve had to end chapters in my life, cut people out of my life, say goodbye to people I necessarily wasn’t ready to say goodbye to, had people say goodbye to me and I wasn’t ready to let it go. I feel that is just the real concept of lost & what it means. So I just wanted to put that into a song and make it very emotional something that people can relate to and help them get through whatever it is their going through. Read the full interview HERE . Justin Timberlake, Amanda Seyfried Explain What Happens ‘In Time’

What if ‘we had the potential to live forever and we looked 25 forever?’ Timberlake explained of the movie’s plot. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried in “In Time” Photo: Twentieth Century Fox Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried have done what every person in Hollywood strives to do: stop the aging process. In their new sci-fi flick “In Time,” directed by Andrew Niccol, the actors’ characters shake up their futuristic society, where the upper crust can buy or sell the most important thing the future has to offer: time itself. “We’re all mortals and the human race needs to be structured in a way where there’s no overpopulation,” Seyfried told MTV News on Saturday at San Diego Comic-Con . “And we all have body clocks and when we turn 25, you stop aging, basically, and it turns off [and] then you look 25 forever. You can be however old; you can live forever if you have a lot of time.” For Timberlake’s character, Will Salas, his time is nearly up when he’s gifted with more time by a wealthy older man. The elite, played by Cillian Murphy and Vincent Kartheiser, aren’t too keen on this, and eventually, Salas kidnaps Kartheiser’s daughter (Seyfried) and they go on the lam. Why is he so frantic to try to beat the clock? “If you run out of time, you have a heart attack and you’re dead immediately,” Seyfried explained. “It’s cut-and-dry, black and white. There’s the rich, there’s the poor. It reflects a lot on our actual, real society.” Niccol has put his signature seriously satiric stamp on the ideas of aging, something that really appealed to Timberlake. “That’s something that I love that Andrew does. You take a concept like the fountain of youth, something we all seem to be obsessed with, and what would happen if we actually got it? If we had the potential to live forever and we looked 25 forever?” he said. The film features a bevy of good-looking people including Alex Pettyfer, Matt Bomer and Olivia Wilde, to name a few, making filming quite an interesting process that came with this note: “Everyone may look the same age, but not everyone is playing the same age.” “All the actors in this film look the same age, but Matt Bomer, for instance, plays a character that’s 105,” Timberlake explained. “And so it really is a visual trip to watch.” Check out everything we’ve got on “In Time.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
