‘Harry Potter’ Star Tom Felton Calls Movie Awards Nod ‘A Massive Honor’

‘I’d love to see some awards being handed out to ‘Harry Potter’ stars,’ he tells MTV News. By Eric Ditzian Tom Felton Photo: Steven Lawton/ FilmMagic Last summer, at the New York premiere for “Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince,” Tom Felton — the Brit actor behind platinum-blond baddie Draco Malfoy — walked us through the key characteristics of a great onscreen villain . “Cold eyes, I’ve been told. A pretty pasty face,” he said. “I think to be evil you need an iconic look. Like a James Bond villain, with the scar or a cat.” The guy certainly knows what he’s talking about. On Wednesday morning (May 12), Felton was nominated for Best Villain at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards . Back in South London while finishing up the shoot for “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” Felton gave MTV News a call to talk about his nomination and take stock of the competition. “It’s a massive honor,” he said. “Especially given that it’s a fan vote. That makes it quite touching. And it’s classic for me, because for almost a decade, kids have been running onto set and hugging Daniel [Radcliffe] and shaking Emma [Watson]’s hand. I try and be as polite as I can, and I never seem to get anywhere with them. Finally, I’m in a category that celebrates that fact!” Come the June 6 awards show, Felton will face off in the Best Villain category against Christoph Waltz (“Inglourious Basterds”), Helena Bonham Carter (“Alice in Wonderland”), Ken Jeong (“The Hangover”) and Stephen Lang (“Avatar”). Obviously, the key question is: Which of these nefarious characters would win in a fight? Lang’s scar-faced, alien-slaying boss in “Avatar” might prove to be a bit of a challenge for the supernatural-assisted Draco, but Felton isn’t too worried. “If he had one of those big suits on he had on at the end, I’m not sure I’d stand a chance,” he said, before deciding, “But I have got the wand always, and the broomstick is pretty nimble.” The wand is exactly what Draco would need against Waltz’s cold-blooded, Jew-hunting Nazi — a performance Felton dubbed “the most spine-chilling of the year.” “He may talk a good talk, but against a decent spell or two, I might be able to take him,” Felton laughed. And then there’s Helena Bonham Carter, his “Harry Potter” co-star and now his MTV Movie Awards adversary. “Never my competition — she’s my idol,” Felton said. “I’ve learned more off her than anyone else.” Sure you don’t want to talk a little smack? “Of course! I’m putting a friendly face on it, but on the night, it’s all game,” Felton said. “Each dog for his own.” Lastly, there is Jeong’s naked, tire-iron-swinging mob boss. Can a wizard take him down? And would Draco ever strip it all off to prove he’s the best villain on the big screen? Turns out, that almost happened during “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.” “In the fourth film, I got turned into a ferret,” he said. “In the original script, it says that in the transition back from ferret to human, I was going to be naked, and I was going to have to run through the courtyard with about 60 extras and 50 film crew and run out with my cheeks on show. For some reason, they pulled that at the last minute. I don’t know why. Maybe they thought it was too explicit for young viewers. Maybe something about not having a wide-angle lens!” Well played, sir. Any final words — a get-out-the-vote message for fans? “After 10 years, to still be in the public’s hearts, it really means a lot,” he said. “I can speak for Daniel and Emma and the rest of the cast on that one. I’d love to see some awards being handed out to ‘Harry Potter’ stars on the night.” Don’t miss the MTV Movie Awards , airing Sunday, June 6, at 9 p.m. ET on MTV! ‘Idol Gives Back’ Raises Nearly $45 Million

‘American Idol’ charity event featured performances by Alicia Keys, Black Eyed Peas and Carrie Underwood. By Gil Kaufman Alicia Keys performs on “Idol Gives Back” on Wednesday Photo: Fox Thanks to performances by Carrie Underwood , Mary J. Blige, Alicia Keys and Sir Elton John, Wednesday night’s third “Idol Gives Back” charity event raised almost $45 million for a variety of charities, according to figures provided by Fox. The two-hour-plus show raised funds for U.S. and international charities including the Children’s Health Fund, Feeding America, Malaria No More, Save the Children’s U.S. Programs and the United Nations Foundation. In addition to gripping taped packages featuring the show’s four judges and host Ryan Seacrest visiting charitable organizations, stars such as Jennifer Garner, David Arquette, Morgan Freeman and Annie Lennox appeared in segments spotlighting the work of some of the designated organizations. The fundraising figure was slightly below the previous totals for the show, which brought in more than $70 million during its inaugural year in 2007, when Underwood, Fergie, Kelly Clarkson and Green Day performed, and $60 million in 2008, which featured Miley Cyrus, Snoop Dogg, Jordin Sparks and Mariah Carey. The event took a year off in 2009 due to the economic meltdown. “Once again, I am over overwhelmed by the generosity of the AMERICAN IDOL viewers, our sponsors and our special benefactors. I am so thankful to all of the celebrity guests and performers who appeared Wednesday night to support IDOL GIVES BACK” said “Idol” creator Simon Fuller in a statement. The $45 million figure is likely to go up when the totals are in from the iTunes store, which will donate net proceeds from the sales of the top seven finalist performances to “Idol Gives Back.” A select number of performances from Wednesday night’s show will also be featured in the iTunes store. Also performing on the show were Jeff Beck and Joss Stone , the Black Eyed Peas and Annie Lennox, who unveiled a touching new song about the struggles of underprivileged children entitled “Universal Child.” Among the actors, comedians and dignitaries who pitched in were President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, Victoria Beckham, Wanda Sykes, George Lopez, David Cook, Russell Brand, Jonah Hill, and Bill and Melinda Gates. Donations are still being accepted online at AmericanIdol.com and by telephone at (877) IDOL-AID (877-436-5243; toll-free). Peter Steele, Type O Negative Singer, Dead At 48

Singer reportedly died of heart failure, according to manager. By Gil Kaufman Type O Negative’s Peter Steele Photo: Paul Bergen/ Redferns Peter Steele of heavy metal band Type O Negative has died of heart failure at age 48. Steele (born Petrus Ratajczyk), the burly 6’7″ bassist and lead vocalist of the Brooklyn goth-metal band, formed Type O in the early ’90s after stints in several other groups, including the hardcore act Carnivore. A spokesperson for Type O bandmates Kenny Hickey and Johnny Kelly confirmed the sad news to MTV News. And according to CBS News , band manager Mike Renault sent an e-mail saying, “Peter passed away last night. As of now it appears to have been heart failure. That’s all the details we have right now.” The band’s most recent label, SPV/Steamhammer Records, reportedly issued an online statement about Steele’s passing. “It’s with great sadness that we give our condolences to the family and friends of Peter Steele,” it read. “He died on April 14th, 2010. With his bands Carnivore and Type O Negative he achieved cult status and was loved by fans around the world. … The world has lost a charismatic frontman and a very talented person. Our condolences go to Peter’s family, friends and the members of his bands.” Fuse metal hostess Mistress Juliya (Juliya Chernetsky) tweeted about the news on Wednesday. “Today is a very sad day in metal … end of an era … Peter Steele passed today,” she wrote. “I loved my friend … our idol … my heart is with his band and family.” Blabbermouth.com , a site run by the band’s former label , Roadrunner Records, also reported that Type O keyboardist Josh Silver had confirmed that Steele died on Wednesday. A rumor circulated that Steele had died in 2005, but that turned out to be a publicity stunt to promote their new record, making it difficult to assess the validity of this latest report. The earlier rumor sprung from an image of a tombstone with his name and the dates 1962-2005 that was briefly posted on the band’s Web site but then removed. Steele reportedly suffered from clinical depression, reflected in the band’s doom-laden lyrics, dark image and an often morbid sense of humor. Type O released seven studio albums, with their most recent being 2007’s Dead Again. Related Artists Type O Negative

Yelawolf’s Hip-Hop Is ‘Heavily Influenced’ By Classic Rock

‘I picked up a lot of classic-rock, melodic influence from my mom, music that she listened to,’ he tells Mixtape Daily. By Steven Roberts Yelawolf Photo: Ghet-O-Vision Ent. Fire Starter: Yelawolf Gadsden, Alabama, isn’t exactly a hip-hop hotbed, but the small town, just east of Birmingham, might have the ambassador to put it on the map. Yelawolf (born Michael Wayne Atha) has been building quite the buzz with features on Slim Thug’s “I Run” and Juelz Santana’s “Mixin’ My Medicine,” but he’s been grinding for a minute and making a bigger name for himself thanks to his mixtapes, most recently Trunk Music. Yela was raised in Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee by his single mother and was influenced by her musical interests. “I just picked up a lot of classic-rock, melodic influence from my mom, music that she listened to, like 10,000 Maniacs, Led Zeppelin, REO Speedwagon and Yes,” he said. “She was actually dating a dude who was on tour with Aerosmith during the ‘Walk This Way’ tour who brought me back some of my Adidas T-shirts and [a tape of] ‘Paul Revere.’ Beastie Boys, that was my first taste of hip-hop.” Yela eventually decided to pursue a career in hip-hop, but he still loved classic rock. “I equally love both, classic rock and hip-hop. I love all music, really, and I really use classic rock a lot,” he said. “I’m heavily influenced by that melodically in my music. I can’t really separate the two.” Yela said he was also influenced by the grit and grime of the neighborhoods he lived in. For every Lynyrd Skynyrd album, there was a Three 6 Mafia, Skinny Pimp, Outkast or UGK record too. “Where I’m from is like ‘Hustle & Flow’ versus ‘8 Mile.’ It’s that really grimy, box-Chevy, dope-boy, working-class music.” Before breaking through in music, Yela decided to pursue skateboarding. He moved to Berkeley, California, but he eventually found himself at food drives with homeless people. Amid a slew of skating-related injuries, Wolf decided to focus his efforts on rap. He took to the mixtapes. Ball of Flames, his tribute to “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby,” was the first to come out. Talladega is only 20 minutes from his house. Then he dropped his underground gem, Stereo, with DJ Ideal. The mixtape was a hip-hop tribute to classic rock, and it received five cigars in Ozone magazine (the equivalent of Source ‘s five mics). He followed that up with the EP Arena Rap, which featured a full band, including a fiddle and banjo player. Finally, at the top of the year, came Trunk Music, which showed people he could really rap. “I felt like people were waiting for me to rap, and I was hungry to do it again,” said Yelawolf, who also said he was taking his time with his debut LP. “We had just been experimenting with the band sound. I just was hungry to rap over 808s and high-hats and really just do some double-time drive records. It was just a passion.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Related Videos Mixtape Daily: Drake, LeBron James, Lil Wayne, More

Kris Allen Recalls ‘Destruction’ He Witnessed In Haiti

‘I wanted to go over there and help,’ says Allen, who will perform on ‘American Idol’ and talk about his trip. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Jim Cantiello Kris Allen helps out in Haiti Photo: Fox Kris Allen’s “American Idol” appearance on Thursday (February 25) will not just be a homecoming for the show’s reigning champ, but also an opportunity for the 24-year-old to contribute to a worthy cause: the ongoing relief efforts in earthquake-ravaged Haiti. Allen traveled to the embattled island nation last week, and before he takes the “Idol” stage for the first time since his win last May, the singer spoke with MTV News about his experience in Haiti and what he hopes to accomplish during Thursday’s appearance. “It was a weird trip, because you get over there — everyone’s seen the pictures and stuff and the videos — it’s really bad,” he said. “It’s a lot of destruction. A lot of people have been affected by it. But there’s a lot of stuff going on.” Allen pointed to the relief efforts of organizations like the Salvation Army and the Red Cross, who have been working on the ground ever since a 7.0 quake nearly leveled the capital city of Port-au-Prince in January. During his visit, Allen stopped by an aid camp that opened the night of the earthquake and now is the temporary home for more than 3,300 Haitians, with more arriving every day. All these relief groups, the singer said, “have done so many amazing things for the Haitian people and gave that nation a lot of hope for the future.” The idea for the trip to Haiti came from “Idol” creator Simon Fuller. As soon as Fuller made the suggestion, Allen came onboard. He ended up handing out food, breaking up fallen concrete with a sledgehammer and clearing rubble with his hands, all the while working side by side with the Haitian people. Allen’s last stop took him to a tent where mothers come to breastfeed their babies and care for their children. During Thursday’s show, viewers will be asked to make online or text-message donations to the Idol Gives Back Foundation, with funds going to support the United Nations Foundation’s ongoing efforts in Haiti. “I wanted to go over there and help,” Allen said. “I felt like I did that in a little way. I think that me being on the show is going to be a bigger help than me going there with the little bit of manpower that I have.” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions. Kris Allen Plans Haiti Visit For ‘American Idol’ Fundraiser

Last year’s winner will appear on the show next week to share footage of his trip and perform. By Katie Byrne Kris Allen Photo: Frazer Harrison/Getty Images Kris Allen will appear on “American Idol” next week to help raise money for Haiti, it was announced Wednesday (February 17). Last year’s “Idol” winner has partnered with the United Nations Foundation to take a trip to the earthquake-ravaged country, and he will share footage from his visit and perform on the February 25 results show. Allen will head to Haiti on February 19 to meet with U.N. staff and Haitian people to find out what the country will need to recover in the coming months. Fox told The Associated Press that viewers will be asked to make donations online or by text-messaging during the “Idol” episode, with the money going to the Idol Gives Back Foundation to help support the U.N. Foundation’s work in Haiti. “I’m looking forward to traveling to Haiti to see the U.N.’s work firsthand,” Allen said in a statement. “The people of Haiti are rebuilding their country, and the U.N. is there to help them every step of the way. I look forward to sharing the images and stories from my trip with ‘Idol’ viewers across the country.” The appearance is part of the show’s “Idol Gives Back” charity effort, with the full “Idol Gives Back” episode airing April 21. The charity show took a break last season due to the pressure of producing that show along with the finale. “Idol” judge Randy Jackson suggested that this year’s “Idol Gives Back” might benefit Haiti, and it looks like that is part of the plan.
