30 Seconds To Mars Call Record-Setting Show A ‘Thank You’

Band will enter the Guinness Book of World Records with Wednesday’s show, their 300th in support of This Is War. By James Montgomery Jared Leto of 30 Seconds to Mars Photo: MTV News Like most things involving his band, Jared Leto’s idea to gun for the Guinness Book of World Records was born out of one part determination, one part mania — and a whole lot of sleep deprivation. “It was my idea. I’m the guilty party here,” he laughed. “But people started to ask us, with an incredulous look, What the f— is wrong with you? or they would kind of look at us and be like, ‘You guys are still on tour?’ And it started to seep in that maybe this was a little bit crazy. And then I remember as a kid, I was a big fan of the Guinness Book of World Records … so I just started thinking, Maybe we should take a shot at it. ” So they did, and on Wednesday night (December 7), with a sold-out concert at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom, 30 Seconds to Mars will officially set a Guinness World Record for most shows performed during a single album cycle. It’s the 300th they’ve played in support of their This Is War album, and yes, though they’re very tired, they’re also quite honored to hold the record for the world’s longest-running road dogs. “I used to love the [Guinness] Book, you know, world’s fattest twins or world’s longest fingernails, and so it’s fun to think we’re a part of something that was a part of our childhood,” Leto said. “Plus, it’s Mars history, and something fun for us to do and another chance for us to stop, take note, say thank you to the people that have shared the journey and helped to take our dreams and make them reality.” Though the record-setting show is sold out, fans from around the world can still witness the band make history through VyRT.com , an interactive site that will stream the Hammerstein gig in all its glory. Once the show is completed, 30STM will play a pair of low-key benefit performances at New York’s St. Peter’s church, and then, finally, their schedules will be clear. And no, they’re not quite sure what they’ll do with all that free time. “I think the most time we’ve had off over the past two years has been, maybe, two weeks, and we shot a video during that time,” Leto laughed. “It’s almost like taking away your wife or newborn baby and then saying, ‘OK, go and live another life.’ It’s become such a deep, intrinsic part of our daily grind. … It may not be as easy as we’ve all been assuming, but whatever it is … it will be a step towards a really different future.” A future that includes more Mars music? Well, that remains to be seen. For this week, at least, 30 Seconds to Mars aren’t thinking about what lies ahead; they’re remembering everything that’s led them to this point. After all, it’s been quite a journey, to say the very least. “It’s a new beginning; that’s always really strange, exciting, uncomfortable but important. We all know you close one door and another one can open, but I think the future of 30 Seconds to Mars, as undetermined as things may be right now, it’s still very exciting,” Leto said. “There are a lot of projects under that banner; music is one, and we’re also really grateful, and this week is about sharing that with everyone as we say goodbye and thank everyone for the most amazing journey we’ve ever experienced in our lives. We’ll always look back at this time as one of the most important and impactful periods of our creative lives, ever.” Congratulate 30 Seconds to Mars on their record in the comments below! Lindsay Lohan’s Playboy Cover Leaks

Actress was set to debut the cover of January/February issue on ‘Ellen’ next week. By Jocelyn Vena Lindsay Lohan Photo: Toby Canham/Getty Images Just a month after posing for Playboy, Lindsay Lohan’s cover has hit the Net. On the cover, posted by “The Insider,” Lohan appears fully nude in front of a red backdrop, her assets strategically covered by a chair in the shape of the magazine’s iconic bunny ears, leaving mostly everything to the imagination. The cover is definitely a throwback to the vintage shoots from the magazine’s early days. Photos: The highs and lows of Lindsay Lohan. Lohan, who faced a number of legal battles this year, will sit down with Ellen DeGeneres on her talk show December 15 to open up about the headline-making photo shoot for the January/February issue. According to the magazine rep, the “Ellen” stop is the only interview Lohan will give to promote the issue. During her chat, she will reveal another image from the magazine. She was originally slated to debut the cover on the show as well before it leaked online. In an interview with “The Insider” in November, Lindsay’s mom, Dina, opened up about her daughter’s decision to pose for the magazine. “It will be tastefully done,” Dina explained. “She’s been working in front of the camera with Ford Models since she was a little girl, so she kinda knows how to work that.” E! News reported at the time of the November photo shoot that Lohan had to pose a second time for the magazine after her first shoot didn’t get the seal of approval from Playboy founder Hugh Hefner. The source added that while the photos needed to be reshot, Lohan would be keeping one thing the same: She wouldn’t appear fully nude in the issue. A rep for the magazine had not responded to MTV News’ request for comment about the leaked cover by press time. Related Photos The Highs And Lows Of Lindsay Lohan Related Artists Lindsay Lohan

Jay-Z/Kanye Can’t Top Yuck: My Favorite 2011 Album

Coldplay, Girls and Lykke Li also among year’s best, but Yuck’s self-titled debut tops this MTV News writer’s list. By Gil Kaufman Kanye West and Jay-Z Photo: The Washington Post/Getty Images Year-end album lists are kind of like going to a high school reunion: You feel obligated to do it, you way overthink things and nobody wants to show up with an unfashionable look that nobody else is rocking. Some people reach for an obscurity to up their cred or go with the big, dumb, obvious choice to avoid making waves and be down with the cool kids. When asked to only pick one album from 2011, I just prefer to cheat. That’s why I’ll mention that I was way into things like Jay-Z and Kanye West’s Watch the Throne for its brash, bombastic rap supremacy; Coldplay’s Mylo Xyloto for its willingness to take chances; and the truly excellent old-school/new-school fire of reggae icon Jimmy Cliff’s Tim-Armstrong-produced Sacred Fire EP. Lykke Li’s subtly moving, deceptively funky Wounded Rhymes did it for me, as did My Morning Jacket’s always brain-expanding sound on Circuital. EMA’s brain-buzzing, reverb-flooded Past Life and Martyred Saints did the trick, along with tUnE-yArDs’ kitchen-sink, jungle-funking Whokill. Hell, I might even mention that I couldn’t put down Girls’ seductively simple Father, Son, Holy Ghost, James Blake’s trancy self-titled debut or Wu Lyf’s gruff, confounding Go Tell Fire to the Mountain. But while all excellent, none of those are my top album of the year. That honor goes to London shoegazer revivalists Yuck, whose self-titled debut album was like a time machine back to my indie-rock musical youth. As much as I love listening to new artists make the most of modern technology and blaze trails, this year I was drawn to albums by bands like the Dum Dum Girls and Yuck, which pay homage to such college-rock forebearers as My Bloody Valentine, Pavement, Jesus and Mary Chain, Sparklehorse, Dinosaur Jr. and Sonic Youth. Songs like Yuck’s, yes, soothing “Soothe Me” and the druggy ripsaw guitar boogie of “Holing Out,” with its briefly spiraling solo and dreamy multi-tracked vocals, just speak to the club jockey in me. I haven’t had a chance to see Yuck live yet, but listening to their music feels like beer-soaked floors, sweaty front-of-stage scrums, ringing ears and watery mixed drinks. They’re in no hurry on “Georgia,” plugging along on tambourines and blown-out double guitar boogie, as vocalist Ilana Blumberg seductively sings beneath the bramble of noise about dreams and love confusion. Yeah, it’s often a slapdash-seeming mess (“Rubber”) or a bit too precious in its love of all things Smashing Pumpkins (“Milkshake”), but that was the noise-pop alley I felt like lurking in this year. Conrad Murray Sentence ‘Not Enough,’ MJ Fans Say

But other Michael Jackson supporters outside L.A. courthouse tell MTV News ‘justice has been served.’ By Katie Byrne, with reporting by Vanessa White Wolf Conrad Murray Photo: Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images LOS ANGELES — During the trial of Dr. Conrad Murray, Michael Jackson ‘s fans have been as much a fixture at the courthouse as the Jackson family . When Murray was sentenced to four years in jail Tuesday (November 29), MTV News spoke with those loyal fans outside the court to see if the maximum sentence was an apt punishment. “Four years — not enough, but at least something,” said one fan, sporting a red jacket in tribute to MJ. “And where I come from, a little something is always better than nothing.” One pair of friends might have been wearing matching Thriller T-shirts, but their opinions on Murray’s sentence certainly didn’t match. “If four years is the maximum and he got the maximum — I know she’s not happy, but I’m happy,” one of the women said, gesturing to her less-than-pleased companion. “I feel like justice was served and that L.A. can now be proud and stand tall.” “It’s better than nothing, but it’s not even close to justice,” said another fan, wearing Jackson’s trademark fedora and sequined glove. “Not only was [Murray] negligent; he let the man die. It’s unconscionable. He didn’t even try. How would a heart doctor not know how to give CPR? It’s insane.” The cardiologist, who was found guilty of one felony count of involuntary manslaughter November 7, was facing up to four years in state prison in the death of the pop icon, but due to recent changes to alleviate overcrowding in California prisons, the judge in the case said he was unable to send the doctor to state prison for his crime. On top of that, legal expert Mike Cavalluzzi told MTV News that Murray will likely serve less than half of his four-year sentence. Those legal loopholes concerned a female fan outside the courthouse, but she was also happy that the maximum punishment was doled out. “The only thing I’m worried about now, with the overcrowding of the jails, he might get one year and house arrest,” she told MTV News. “I’m just hoping it’ll be four years, that’s what I’m praying. I’m just glad that justice has been served today, and I’m glad justice can be served to the family and to the fans, and everybody around today will be happy and celebrate that justice has been served. And I’m sure Michael’s looking from heaven right now.” Related Videos Michael Jackson Doctor Conrad Murray Sentenced Related Artists Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson Doctor To Be Sentenced Today

Conrad Murray faces four years in prison for involuntary manslaughter. By Gil Kaufman Dr. Conrad Murray Photo: Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images Former Michael Jackson doctor Conrad Murray will learn his fate Tuesday morning (November 29) in a Los Angeles courtroom. The cardiologist, who was found guilty of one felony count of involuntary manslaughter November 7, is facing up to four years in state prison in the death of the pop icon. Though the jury reached a unanimous verdict in the case, due to recent changes in California law aimed at lessening prison overcrowding, experts told MTV News that it’s unlikely Murray will spend much, if any, time behind federal bars. At the time of the verdict, Los Angeles-based criminal defense attorney Mike Cavalluzzi told MTV News it was too early to predict what kind of time Dr. Murray might do, calling the decision one of the toughest ones facing Judge Michael Pastor in the wake of the six-week trial. “[Pastor] will have to seriously consider all of the mitigating factors which would lean toward Dr. Murray not doing any jail time and all of the aggravating factors that would lead toward him going to state prison,” said Cavalluzzi, who was not involved in the case but has represented a number of clients facing felony charges. “It seems to me, at first blush, that any jail time wouldn’t be appropriate in this case given the fact that Dr. Murray has no criminal record and there truly was no malice, no intent to actually harm Michael Jackson at all. What he was really doing was succumbing to the wishes of a patient, and unfortunately, that patient was not a person whose wishes should have been succumbed to.” After Murray was found guilty and swiftly sent to jail with no bail, his attorneys said they were planning to appeal the verdict . They will wait until after sentencing hearing to do so, but either way, Murray will face the loss of his medical license in California. One of Murray’s defense attorneys, Nareg Gourjian, said at the time that the doctor’s team plans to ask for probation but expects his client to spend just “a little bit” of time in county jail.
