‘Justin Bieber: Never Say Never’ Director’s Cut Could Hit Theaters Soon

Jon M. Chu said to be working on version with new footage that may be released in theaters this month. By Eric Ditzian Justin Bieber in “Never Say Never” Photo: Paramount With a running time of one hour and 45 minutes, Justin Bieber’s “Never Say Never” packs in 3-D concert footage, home videos, behind-the-scenes looks, interviews with everyone from Snoop Dogg to the pop star’s vocal coach and extended, slow-motion shots of the 16-year-old shaking out his famous locks. Perhaps, however, you didn’t get your fill of the kid — perhaps your Bieber Fever rages on. In which case, you might be in luck. New York magazine’s Vulture blog reports that Paramount Pictures is making plans for a director’s cut of the film, following its $29.5 million opening this past weekend. Director Jon M. Chu is said to be working on an updated version of the movie, including new live performances, footage of Bieber at the “Never Say Never” premiere and various advance screenings, and potentially scenes shot at the Grammy Awards on Sunday. The studio is reportedly waiting for delivery of the re-cut film before deciding if it will be released in theaters late in February or as part of a special DVD. MTV News’ request for comment to Paramount (which, like MTV News, is owned by Viacom) was not returned as of press time. Box-office grosses for the concert film are likely to decline in the coming weeks, following Bieber fans’ initial pilgrimage to multiplexes during opening weekend, and the re-cut film could dramatically boost its B.O. bottom line. If the new version does hit theaters, it will likely be as a 3-D-only release, as the cost of releasing digital prints is significantly less than printing and shipping film prints. A final decision on a release will be made once Chu finishes the cut after returning from international premieres in London and Paris. Lady Gaga’s ‘Born This Way’ Rockets Up Billboard Charts

Instant-smash single is poised to debut at #1 on Hot 100. By Gil Kaufman Lady Gaga Photo: Kevin Winter/Getty Images Who didn’t see this one coming? Thanks to the pushed-up release date on Friday and the most talked-about entrance at Sunday night’s Grammys — not to mention what must have amounted to endless spins at clubs over the weekend — Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” is making some chart history. Billboard reported that after just three days of availability, the tune shot to a record-setting debut on the Pop Songs radio airplay chart at #14 and is poised to possibly debut at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart this week thanks to brisk digital sales. The first single from the album of the same name due on May 23 got 4,602 plays, which gives it the highest detections total by a debuting song in the chart’s 18-year history, representing an audience of 39.3 million. Citing unnamed sources, the magazine also reported that “Born” sold more than 450,000 downloads since its release on Friday morning, which could help the song debut at #1 on the Hot 100 and make it only the 19th song ever to do so on that chart. Gaga could also potentially wrest a record for the biggest debut track for a woman from Britney Spears if download sales continue to climb. Spears’ “Hold it Against Me” rocked the chart a month ago with 411,000 in sales, but if Gaga’s numbers hold she could land the fourth-largest digital track debut of all time behind Flo Rida’s “Right Round,” (636,000) the Black Eyed Peas’ “Boom Boom Pow” (465,000) and Flo Rida’s “Low” (460,000). The star stopped by “Jay Leno” the day after the Grammys, and in addition to explaining that she and Madonna have no beef over complaints by some that “Born This Way” bears too much of a resemblance to some earlier Material Girl hits, Gaga also announced her upcoming May HBO special and explained the inspiration behind her new album. She also revealed that she changed up the entire look of her Grammy performance two days before it aired because she wasn’t happy with it. “I don’t want the band and dancers to feel like a band and dancers,” Gaga said, explaining why her crew was dressed in flesh-tone vinyl outfits that matched her own. When Leno made a crack about her trio of Grammy outfits, which included a molded leather bodice created by fashion icon Thierry Mugler, Gaga said the latter had a cosmic inspiration. “It was inspired by humanoids, alien sex humanoid hybrid women,” she said matter of factly, rocking some of the low budget sci-fi alien face-ridged makeup she debuted at the Grammys, on Leno’s show. The talk show host pointed to her third getup, which she said featured a giant black “church” hat, and asked if maybe it didn’t block the view of the star behind her at the show, actor Will Smith. Gaga promised it didn’t and added that she is in love with his daughter’s hit single. “I love Willow,” gushed Gaga , who took a series of photos with the pre-teen Smith family singer on her lap at the show. “I told her that she inspired me to whip my hair back and forth!” Though she claimed to have written “Born This Way” in a matter of minutes, Gaga said she spent more than a year perfecting it and tweaking the music, promising that it is just one of the many sounds you’ll hear on the album. “The record is kind of eclectic in a way,” she said. “The rest of the songs on the album are quite different from ‘Born This Way.’ ” As for the album’s theme, Gaga said it’s about “being able to know that when you were born, you weren’t just born in that moment, you have your entire life to realize the person that you’re potentially going to become and whoever you choose to be was part of your destiny.” Her hope, she said, was to encourage people who are feeling bullied or disenfranchised at the moment to realize that it’s “never too late to harness your inner superstar.” For more Grammy Awards analysis, interviews, fashion and more, stick with MTV News! Lady Gaga’s Best Awards-Show Arrivals: From Kermit To The Egg

Gaga has always graced red carpets in completely over-the-top ways. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga arrives at the Grammy Awards on Sunday Photo: Jason Merritt/Getty Images Lady Gaga arrived at the Grammy Awards red carpet on Sunday night in an egg designed by powerhouse fashion houses Hussein Chalayan and House of Mugler. And we’d expect nothing less from Gaga, who has a long list of unusual and over-the-top awards show entrances in her short career. Check out photos of Lady Gaga’s most memorable entrances . Back in September, Gaga hit the white carpet of the 2010 VMAs in gown designed by late friend Alexander McQueen and was joined by several servicemen and women who had been discharged from the U.S. Air Force and Army for being openly gay or bisexual. “These soldiers that are with me today have all been discharged from the Air Force or Army, or opted to leave on their own. … Their stories are truly inspiring, and in my opinion — and as so many young people around the world believe — ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ is wrong, it’s sick, it’s immoral,” she explained of her choice to include them in her appearance. Later in the night she appeared in the press room wearing the now-famous meat dress and pointed out its connection to her earlier companions. “If we don’t stand up for what we believe in and if we don’t fight for our rights, pretty soon we’re going to have as much rights as the meat on our own bones,” Gaga explained . “And I am not a piece of meat.” At last year’s Grammy Awards , Gaga was out-of-this world in a sparkly lavender and silver dress that looked like a planet with orbiting rings. What did the spacey outfit mean? “The series of pieces Mr. Armani created for me are truly iconic; they represent not only beautiful fashion, but my spirit and essence as an artist,” she said. “Mr. Armani is a fashion legend, and tonight would not have been the same without his touch, and his wonderful team.” Gaga, who once wore a dress made of Kermit the Frogs, arrived at the 2009 VMAs with Kermit himself as her date for the big show. It was the first time that Gaga had created such a major spectacle for herself at an awards show. “He’s been a really good date,” Gaga joked to MTV News. “It’s our first date, but we’ve been eyeing each other for a while.” And on Sunday night, though she didn’t do interviews as her egg was being carried into the Staples Center, the art piece spoke for itself. “She’s born this way, so maybe she’s being born again!” MTV News red-carpet correspondent Snooki noted after Gaga waved to her from inside her shell. Lady Gaga’s Grammy Performance: How Will She Top Herself?

MTV News takes a guess at what Lady Gaga will do Sunday during her ‘Born This Way’ performance. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga performs at the 2010 Grammy Awards Photo: Kevin Winter/Getty Images On Sunday, days after debuting “Born This Way,” a splashy dance track about accepting who you are, Lady Gaga is set to take the stage and perform the song for the first time at the Grammys (if you don’t count the time she sang part of the chorus at the VMAs back in September). Gaga’s live performances are typically gory, over-the-top spectacles. She died a bloody death onstage during the 2009 VMAs , she played with fire that same year at the American Music Awards and paid tribute to her late pal, Alexander McQueen , at the Brit Awards in 2010. Lindsay Lohan Tweets ‘I Would Never Steal’

Actress’ lawyer reportedly looking for plea deal in jewelry theft case. By Gil Kaufman Lindsay Lohan Photo: Dave McNew/ Getty Images Lindsay Lohan has not yet spoken in public about the felony grand theft charge she’s facing for reportedly stealing a $2,5000 necklace from a Venice, California, jewelry store in January. But on Thursday, a day after posting bail and being released from jail in the case, the 24-year-old actress defended herself via Twitter. “I would never steal, in case people are wondering,” she tweeted . “I was not raised to lie, cheat or steal.” Lohan also lashed out at detractors who said the clingy white mini-dress she wore to court was inappropriate given the gravity of the situation. She is facing three years in prison if convicted. “What I wear to court shouldn’t be front-page news,” she wrote. “It’s just absurd.” Out on $40,000 bail, the “Mean Girls” actress said she’s just ready to move on and get her career back on track. “I just want to be on set again,” said Lohan, who hasn’t appeared on screen since a brief cameo in last year’s “Machete.” Lohan’s lawyer, Shawn Chapman Holley, told CNN that despite pleading not guilty, her client is willing to cut a plea deal as long as it doesn’t involve any jail time. “Ms. Lohan maintains her innocence, and now that I’ve seen the police reports, I believe the case is entirely defensible,” Holley said of the police account of the January 22 incident. “Having said that, we will entertain a discussion concerning a plea if it means no jail so that she can move forward with her recovery and her career.” TMZ reported on Friday that according to the police report, the store’s owner did not want to get the police involved in the case. The owner “stated that she does not want to press charges,” the report read. “She stated that she only wants her necklace returned.” Though the owner was reluctant, the district attorney reportedly decided that there was enough evidence to warrant a prosecution. The next hearing is the case is on February 23. Related Photos Lindsay Lohan Goes To Court The Highs And Lows Of Lindsay Lohan Related Artists Lindsay Lohan

Lady Gaga’s ‘Born This Way’ Shows ‘Depth Of Gaga As A Songwriter,’ Akon Says

‘Unfortunately, people pay more attention to what she is wearing,’ adds Gaga’s label boss. By Jocelyn Vena Akon Photo: Alberto E. Rodriguez/Getty Images It’s here, little monsters. On Friday morning (February 11), Lady Gaga debuted her highly anticipated new single, “Born This Way,” a funky, fun dance tune about loving yourself for who you are. Akon, who signed Gaga to his Kon Live Distribution label in 2008, opened up about the pop star’s latest dance opus, admitting that he thinks it will finally show off Gaga’s full capacities as a musician and songwriter, and not just a pop ingenue. “I think ‘Born This Way’ is the kind of record that if you are really paying attention you will get the full depth of Gaga as a songwriter. Sometimes the creative image hides the element of her lyrical content,” he told PopEater.com . “That’s why she wanted to give people a better idea of what she was saying outside of her image when she dropped those lyrics.” The track has a clear message: Everyone should be treated equally no matter who they are or what they believe in. “Gaga says a lot of stuff in her records,” Akon added. “But I know these parents and critics are not really listening to her lyrics. I know that for a fact. She’s singing about a lot of adult subject matter. She’s not just making dance records. Unfortunately, people pay more attention to what she is wearing.” The song is the lead single off the album of the same name, which will drop in May. Akon revealed that there are a few more touches that need to be added before they reach their deadline. “We are finishing up the album now,” he said. “She’s about to go back on tour later this year. There’s a lot going on.” Related Artists Lady Gaga Akon

Britney Spears Collabo Is ‘A Monster,’ will.i.am Says

Black Eyed Peas frontman calls Femme Fatale track ‘something that today needs.’ By James Dinh Britney Spears Photo: Frank Micelotta/Getty Images Days after his glow-in-the-dark Super Bowl XLV halftime performance, will.i.am is already working on his next high-profile gig: a collaboration with Britney Spears . After the “Hold It Against Me” singer tweeted about the team-up Tuesday, the Black Eyed Peas’ leading man opened up about his studio session with the pop princess. “I just came from the studio right now,” Will told The Associated Press . While hesitant to give away details, he did gush about the tune, emphasizing the song’s place in today’s music scene. “It’s a monster,” he said. “It’s mean, pretty, edgy, next level. But the beat just … It’s that beat. She’s singing fresh over it. It’s something that today needs.” While many fans were pleased to hear about the pop partnership, some weren’t so keen on a tweet will.i.am posted shortly after Spears’ collabo announcement. It read, “I just found out some people don’t tweet themselves they have teams of tweeters for them … Wow.” After Team Britney went after the producer, he clarified his sentiments : “Britney tweets for herself I saw it with my own eyes when we recorded in the studio today,” he wrote. “She’s such a sweet heart she’s a perfectionist. You guys read into things way to hard … shame on who ever thought I was talkin about britney … so sad people want to start things.” In the end, Will reverted the focus back to his tune with the pop star, tweeting, “The song I did with britney is ganna be crazy fresh. from the super bowl to the studio workin on a mega smasher. can’t wait till its done.” As Britney continues her daily tease-a-thon for the “Hold It Against Me” video , which will premiere February 17 on MTV, her collaboration with will.i.am might be one of her final studio sessions in completing her new album, Femme Fatale . Scheduled to drop March 29, the LP is expected to include production credits from Dr. Luke, Max Martin, Rodney Jerkins, Stargate, Fraser T. Smith and Bloodshy & Avant. One producer who might not be making the final cut, however, is William Orbit (Madonna’s “Ray of Light”), according to one of his latest tweets. “did a song w Klas Ahlund, who wrote ‘Piece of Me’. And is killa. But not on FF apparently. But a good song is a good song regardless,” he wrote. What do you think Britney and will.i.am’s collabo will sound like? Tell us below!
