The City Of Memphis Is Keeping Martin Luther King Jr’s Dream Alive While Still Blazing A New Trail

Image via Joe Raedle/Ebet Roberts/Redferns/Win Macnamee/Getty Memphis’s Future Is Built On Fulfilling Dr. King’s Dream From the outside looking in, with only a superficial lens, the city of Memphis, Tennessee revolves around three things: barbecue, blues music and the world-stopping murder of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr . But only when you are on the inside looking out do you realize that Memphis’s true identity revolves around the community of people who not only champion King’s dream of equality, but push foward boldly with entrepreneurship, cuisine and culture. It makes Memphis one of the most unique cities in the United States. Recently, Bossip was invited to visit Memphis to get an intimate look at the city through the eyes of the men and women who have built it up into the enterprising hotbed that it has become. Let’s be clear, the food in Memphis is bomb, fie, lit, good af and whatever other savory superlatives you can cook up. That said, it wasn’t just the flavor of the food that earned Memphis’s culinary culture our high praise. It’s the pride that so many Black restauranteurs feel in serving their community and adding to the city’s legacy. We got a chance to speak to some enterprising sistas like Cynthia Daniels, founder of Memphis Black Restaurant Week, Chef Fran Mosely of HM Dessert Lounge, Ayren Moore-Alston of G. Alston Restaurant and Valerie Pevey, owner of The Office at Uptown. Each and everyone of them told the story of building their businesses from scratch and they credit generous Memphian support as the number one reason for their initial success and continued growth. In turn, these businesses reciprocate in offering opportunities to their communities. Image via Getty For example, the very first Black Restaurant Week took place on March 6-12, 2016. It was launched with 8 restaurants and as a result created 38 jobs. One-third of those turned into full-time positions due to the additional revenue. That’s community building. That’s pride. In speaking to people around the city, we couldn’t help but notice another source of Memphian pride, philanthropy. Memphis is one of the most charitable cities in the U.S. and the arts and culture in the city are better because of it. The Hattiloo Theater and founder Ekundayo Bandele exemplify this benevolence best. The New York native says that Memphis’ affluent Black residents had been longing to put their money into African-American theater, but had no outlet to do so. “There just never was that opportunity for Black wealth to invest in the city. So going to them and asking for $50,000 or $100,000, they were more than happy to do it.” Since 2006, that Black affluent support along with donations from white allies has allowed Hattiloo to flourish for over a decade and remain debt free in their multi-million dollar facility, a rarity in non-profit sector of the arts. Image via AFP/Getty Images Today, thousands are gathered in Memphis to celebrate Dr. King’s legacy and there will without doubt be several replays of the famous “I’ve Been To The Mountaintop” speech he delivered the day before he died from a sniper’s bullet at the Lorraine Hotel. King’s speech was primarily a rallying cry in support of the sanitation worker’s strike, but he also spoke of “strengthening Black institutions”. The unprecedented success of Hattiloo and many other local Black-owned businesses are a realization of that ethos. We can only imagine the pride he would feel seeing the fruits of his labor. Cuisine and culture are not the only things bringing people together in Memphis, visionary infrastructure is as well. Crosstown Concourse is a sprawling mixed-use “urban village” that houses restaurants, retail spaces, health services, a charter high school, art gallery, podcast recording studio and almost 300 apartments. It’s unlike anything we’ve ever seen before and has helped bring over 800 new jobs to the area. Many of the property’s business models work in tangent and are geared toward providing opportunity in education and employment. With all due respect to the hope that Dr. King had for the future, we have to think even he would be pleasantly surprised by how the city of Memphis, Tennessee has banded together to turn a dream into a reality. No place is perfect, no place ever will be, but there is a huge difference between a place mired in the tragedies of the past injustices and Memphis, where the mountaintop of freedom is reached by cooperation, community and combating separatism. Memphis is in this thing together, just like Martin wanted all of us to be. Written by: Jason “Jah” Lee, Associate Editor

Congrats! Tyrese & His Beautiful Black Queen Expecting A Baby Girl

Paras Griffin/Getty Images Congratulations! Tyrese And Samantha Gibson Expecting A Baby Girl Tyrese is set to be a dad, again. The singer and his wife Samantha Lee recently confirmed to PEOPLE that they’re expecting a baby girl. According to Tyrese, the news is unbelievable and he and Samantha, 29, conceived shortly after they began trying to conceive in January. “Both of our love and energy and magic and families are bonded forever because we’re going to have this child,” Gibson, 39, raved in a joint interview with his spouse. “It’s unbelievable.” “It was me screaming and just being overly excited and just fired up about the news,” he says. The couple shared the news with friends and family via a fake movie trailer narrated by Tyrese that transitioned into footage from Samantha’s ultrasound. During his emotional breakdown in November over child custody issues, Tyrese told the world that he and Samantha were expecting but he later said that the medicine he was on made him delusional. Kaia Gerber Bikinis Herself of the Day

I had to have a conversation with myself about posting the bikini pics of some 16 year old…because 16 is pretty fucking young, but not young enough to be in photoshoots…working in fashion as a model…having her images shot by older creepy dudes…all with the love and support of her mom… Sure it’s creepy to put up pics of a 16 year old girl, even if girls get their periods at 4 now, and 16 is really 25 in terms of genetics…but I find it interesting…that this is the world we live in…one where girls, teenage girls, post up provocative half naked content for the internet consumer on public profiles…and their parents allow it and act like it is innocent when knowing how perverted the world is…and the internet is…it’s crazy to me…blows my mind…and so many girls, not just Kaia Gerber are doing it… Normally you’d be shocked a teenage girl was posting up seductive pictures of herself for social media, you know like what is this about, is this even legal, where are her parents…you know the kind of image that isn’t that innocent because it is half naked posing…even if it is just a “bathing suit”…she is but a child…you know the kind of image that would lead to getting a girl suspended from school, or maybe in a meeting with her priest to figure out what the deal is… But when it comes to billionaire heiress Kaia Gerber, the product of Narcissistic Cindy Crawford, who is using her as some kind of revival of her ego, or barbie doll…the mom is actually behind the images..some stage mother shit..and it’s creepy…but not as creepy as how much you fucking love it… This is fucking crazy.

Stephon Clark Shot At Least 8 Times From Behind Or On The Side, Family To File Lawsuit

Justin Sullivan/Getty Images Stephon Clark’s Family Conducts Autopsy, Filing Lawsuit The family of Stephon Clark is seeking justice in the form of an independent autopsy and a lawsuit. As previously reported Clark was killed March 18 when two officers shot him 20 times in his own backyard. CBS News reports that his family’s lawyers told them they plan to file a federal lawsuit as soon as today over his death. The family has since held a press conference at Southside Christian Center and released the findings of an independent autopsy. The autopsy shows that he was shot eight times from behind or the side, according to a private autopsy commissioned by his family. At least eight of those bullets struck Stephon— with none of them entering from the front, according to an analysis by Dr. Bennet Omalu, a private medical examiner his family’s lawyer hired to conduct an independent autopsy reports The New York Times. The medical examiner reports that he was shot four times in the lower part of his back, twice in his neck, once under an armpit and in the leg.The autopsy is being used to prove that Stephon was not a threat to officers. The autopsy directly refutes the contention by police that Stephon was moving toward them when they gunned him down. Stephon was funeralized yesterday and his service was live streamed nationwide. As previously reported Al Sharpton criticized the White House  for calling the shooting a “local matter” with Stephon’s brother by his side.     LIVE: Funeral service for 22-year-old Stephon Clark being held in Sacramento, Calif. https://t.co/ew9GhVTeBm https://t.co/mmvPZD4Niq — NBC News (@NBCNews) March 29, 2018 Continue reading

Pregnant On The Low, Mane: Woman Thought Her 37-Week Pregnancy Was Just Some Bad Chinese Food

Getty Images Woman In Florida Confuses Contractions For Food Poisoning 29-year-old Crystal Gail Amerson woke up at 4am with intense pain in her stomach. She assumed that searing pain had to do with the Chinese food they’d eaten the night before, but her and her fiancé, Brian Westerfield were in for a huge surprise when they found out the real reason for her discomfort. When hours passed and the pain continued,  Amerson realized that she didn’t have food poisoning…these were labor contractions. This was the first moment she realized she was pregnant.  Her fiancé called an ambulance and shortly after they arrived at the hospital, she gave birth to a 5-pound, 18-inch baby boy. At the hospital, doctors informed Amerson that she had been 37 weeks pregnant — which means that without realizing it, she’d carried a baby to full term.  “When the shock initially wore off, I was just relieved that everyone was okay,” Amerson wrote on Facebook. “It was a rough time, but it ended better than it could have.” As with her first son, says she didn’t gain much weight and didn’t experience the morning sickness that many women do.  Amerson had also been on birth control in the past that had eliminated her period, so although she didn’t get her period. Commonly referred to as a “cryptic pregnancy,” a pregnancy that goes unnoticed for as long as 37-weeks happens  1 out of every 7,225 births, according to a study from 2010.
