The House was a victory for President Barack Obama, who has pushed for a change in military policy, and for gay rights group who have made an end to “don't ask, don't tell” their top legislative priority. April 22 is Earth Day, 24 hours devoted to considering the impact we have on the natural world and (hopefully) improving our relationship with the planet. Across California and Hawaii, hundreds of eyes will be trained on the moon, watching for the moment when a hi-tech orbiter – weighing more than 2 tonnes and travelling at 5,600mph – plunges headlong into the lunar surface. The collision will throw a massive cloud of dust and debris up into space before, just a few minutes later, another, smaller, spacecraft follows suit and plummets to its doom.

In a recent interview for broadcast on Wednesday morning’s Today Show, Susan Boyle calls the impact of her overnight success like that of a demolition ball. The Britain’s Got Talent finalist was plucked from relative obscurity, made over and attracted worldwide attention. Soon after the finale, she was admitted to a hospital for exhaustion. The “demolition ball” must have knocked her around a bit! Says Susan: “I guess I had to get my head around it, but through the guidance of a good team, and they are very good, I was able to see that in perspective and really turn that around little.” Boyle has since recovered and is at work on a new record with Simon Cowell, who has supported her throughout the ups and downs of her ordeal.
