Drake Wishes Lil Wayne Could Join Him For 2010 VMAs

‘We could get him out for a day,’ MC says of his incarcerated mentor. By Jayson Rodriguez Drake Photo: MTV News TORONTO — Drake will make his VMA debut next month when he performs at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards , and the Thank Me Later star is already thinking about making a grand entrance. He has some history to compete with — it’s hard to beat Diddy arriving via yacht or T-Pain riding an elephant into the festivities. Drake is still wrapping his thoughts around some ideas, but one plan he wishes he could execute is to step onto the VMA red carpet with Lil Wayne. “That would be the illest moment,” Drake said while taking a break from a VMA promotional shoot. “Mob through. The whole Young Money. … Nobody knew about it. We just all show up. … Or we could get him out for a day. And even if he had to wear a jumpsuit or something.” Wayne began his one-year prison sentence for a 2007 gun charge March 8. Unfortunately for Drake, according to prison records accessed by MTV News in July, Lil Wayne has a projected release date of November 4, two months after the VMAs, which will take place September 12 in Los Angeles. Drake, Kanye West, and Florence and the Machine were announced earlier this week as this year’s VMA performers. The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on September 12 at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for the winners from now through September 12. How do you think Drake should arrive at the VMAs? Lil Wayne Dropping New EP In September

Weezy’s co-manager says, ‘I’ll probably drop [ I’m Not a Human Being EP] on his birthday, September 27.’ By Mawuse Ziegbe Lil Wayne Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage Lil Wayne isn’t due to be released from Rikers until November at the earliest, but his co-manager says spankin’ new music from Weezy may be available by September. While Tha Carter IV isn’t expected to hit stores anytime soon, Cortez Bryant, who also serves as CEO of Young Money, said that fans should be able to check out a new Weezy EP by the fall. “I’m putting out a [Wayne EP] called I’m Not a Human Being and I’ll probably drop it on his birthday, September 27,” Bryant told Vibe.com. Bryant said the EP won’t have the fanfare of a high-profile major-label release and revealed that he’s opting instead for a more low-key way to get the music to the masses. “We’re not about to roll out no three-month setup. I’m not even putting it out in stores,” said Bryant. “We just gonna put it out virally and maybe package it up for Christmas. Give ’em a hard copy later for fan appreciation,” Bryant said of the release, which is billed as a prelude to Tha Carter IV. Wayne is approximately halfway through his yearlong sentence and may be released early on good behavior. While the Human Being EP may satisfy fans until the star is back on the scene, Weezy prot

Lil Wayne’s Verse On Drake’s – Light Up – From Jail? Watch Now!

Weezy and Mack Maine come up with the idea during a phone call, in new footage from DJ Scoob Doo. By Jayson Rodriguez Scoob Doo, Baby and Mack Maine Photo: MTV News Lil Wayne unleashed a lyrical tirade on Drake’s “Light Up,” with the incarcerated rapper contributing a remix verse to the Jay-Z-featured track from behind bars. But how exactly did the collaboration come about? According to footage provided to MTV News by DJ Scoob Doo, Young Money cohort Mack Maine challenged his boss to drop some rhymes to the Tone Mason and Noah “40” Shebib banger. The scene will be featured on Scoob Doo’s forthcoming DVD project featuring Lil Wayne, “The Nino Brown Story, Pt. 3.” “You was supposed to have that third [verse],” Mack tells Wayne after the rapper called him. “Write something to that.” Wayne and Mack were talking about Jay-Z’s opening lines to the second verse, which Weezy admired. “Yeah, man, ain’t nobody talking about what your boy talking about,” he said of Jay. “That n—a is stupid [with his rhymes]. I said, ‘Oooh, look at that.’ ” Mack and Wayne go back and forth, bantering about what the Cash Money Records superstar would sound like on the song. Then, Wayne finally responds. “Come up with a [verse]? Don’t play with me, man,” Weezy tells Mack over the phone. “Just drop that beat to a breakdown to where you can really hear what I’m saying. I’ll write 100 bars to that. Don’t play with me. Let me know when it’s set up, and I’ll do it. “It’s over,” he adds. “I got it already.” The two then coordinate a time for Wayne to call an engineer to help clean up the rapper’s vocals, which were slightly distorted, since he had to rap over the phone. The result was classic Wayne, chock-full of punch lines and illuminating lyrics. “I’m feeling like Elvis, ‘Jailhouse Rock,’ ” Wayne raps via telephone. “I’m not Tupac, I’m the new ‘Pac/ Behind bars, but the bars don’t stop/ Recording over the phone, I hope the call don’t drop/ Drizzy got the ball, I know the ball won’t drop/ And I pray none of my kids ever wanna be Pop.” As of press time, it’s unknown if the “Light Up” remix will be included on the official Thank Me Later release or possibly a later deluxe version. Drake Says He And Lil Wayne Are Planning A Joint Album

‘I went up to Rikers, and me and Wayne agreed that there will be a Lil Wayne/ Drake album,’ he tells MTV’s ‘Sucker Free.’ By Jayson Rodriguez Drake and Lil Wayne Photo: the305.com A Young Angel and Young Lion LP? It’s finally in the works, according to Drake. The Toronto MC said he and Lil Wayne spoke about a joint album when he visited the incarcerated star last week in prison. “I went up to Rikers, and me and Wayne agreed that there will be a Lil Wayne/ Drake album,” Drake told DJ Envy on MTV’s “Sucker Free.” ” … There’s some things I’m excited for in my life — I’m excited to go perform certain places — but [this project] will probably be one of the most exciting things in my life, because we make music on a different level. It’s just so fun, so comfortable. A whole album? To think about all the things we can do, especially if we’re gonna do 15 songs. Me and him don’t like to do 12, 13 [songs]. We want to do 15, 16. Yeah, Lil Wayne and Drake album.” Wayne is only featured once on Drake’s debut album, Thank Me Later, which drops June 15. The Cash Money superstar and Drizzy collaborated on a number of projects in the past, including Drake’s mixtapes Comeback Season and So Far Gone, in addition to the Young Money compilation released last year. But this will be the first time the two MCs pair up for their own project. Last year, while on the verge of inking his deal, Drake told MTV News about his career ambitions and said Lil Wayne would be a part of them for a long time. “I plan to work with Wayne for the rest of my career, so I think it’s a smart career move,” he said. “You know, everybody else [on Young Money] will hopefully work out the situations, get the right people on the album. I think it was important for me to show him that I believed in him as much as he believed in me. Because a lot of months, he stuck his neck out there for me, you know with the VMAs [where Lil Wayne rapped Drake’s verse from ‘Money to Blow’ at the beginning of his performance of ‘Misunderstood’] and then ‘Ransom,’ and all the songs that we put out. And the things he would say in interviews, he really put himself out there for me. So I think it was only just and fair to show him that I feel the same way.” For more Drake, check him out with DJ Envy on the road for Sucker Free Summer at Hartford, Connecticut’s Hot Jam 9 this Sunday at noon on MTV2. Eminem Talks Lil Wayne, Rihanna And Pink Recovery Collabos

‘Wayne, to me, is definitely one of the greatest in the game right now,’ Em says during French radio interview. By Gil Kaufman Eminem Photo: Robyn Beck/ AFP/ Getty Images The elusive Eminem spoke to Skyrock Radio in Paris over the weekend and offered a tiny peek at what he has in store for his upcoming Recovery album . While most of the interview consisted of Em cracking jokes with the French DJs, he did briefly touch on hooking up with the incarcerated Lil Wayne on “No Love,” as well as Pink on “Won’t Back Down” and Rihanna on “Love the Way You Lie.” “I’ve always respected what Wayne does, and Wayne, to me, is definitely one of the greatest in the game right now,” he said of Weezy, who is in the midst of a yearlong prison stretch on gun charges. “As far as the songs with Pink and Rihanna … when I did the song that I did with Pink, I laid my parts first and kind of heard her on the record and felt that she would smash this record. And the other one I did with Rihanna is one of those tracks that I felt like only she could pull it off, only she could do it.” He also dropped the first hints about what the video for lead single “Not Afraid” might look like. Promising that it was coming soon (he mentioned “Saturday” but didn’t go into any other detail), Shady said, “The video is … kind of just … there’s a lot of things in it that are metaphorically speaking. There are things that are symbolic in the video. … The overall concept is basically being in a dark place and trying to get to the light.” Among the topics he touched on were 50 Cent slimming down for his upcoming role in “Things Fall Apart,” in which he plays a cancer-stricken football player. “That’s crazy,” Shady said when talk turned to 50’s shocking weight loss. While trying to find out more French cuss words in order to hit on a comely lady named Marie in the studio, Slim Shady deferred to longtime manager Paul Rosenberg when pressed about why the rapper did not make France one of his three tour stops on his upcoming European swing. The interview ended with Em expressing mystification over why people are so excited about soccer’s upcoming World Cup, a stance that might mean he’ll have some ‘splaining to do when he hits the stages in football-crazy Switzerland and the U.K. in July. “Is it politically incorrect if I said I didn’t like soccer?” he asked. “I’m not a big soccer fan.” Were you surprised by Eminem’s Recovery collaborators? By Jayson Rodriguez Toya, Reginae and Lil Wayne Photo: MTV A preview of Lil Wayne’s third blog posting since he began his prison term appeared online Tuesday (May 4) and, in it, the Young Money boss honors the mothers of the world. Timed to coincide with Mother’s Day on Sunday, the full letter will be published on Friday on his fan site WeezyThanxYou.com , launched so the Cash Money rapper could stay in touch with followers while he’s away. Wayne pays homage to the all the hard-working women in the web excerpt. “The love between a mother and her offspring is hands down the most beautiful thing God created,” the incarcerated MC wrote on DrJays.com , which obtained an exclusive preview. “More than money, more than fame, more than cars. You know why? Because true love is the only thing that lasts from the moment you’re born to the second you perish. “Everything else eventually leaves, think about it. All love needs to survive is love. To all the mothers who read this letter, I hope this day allows you to feel the love and respect you so rightfully deserve. You are the role models, not me.” The letter will be the second official statement he’s penned (excluding an initial update in which he thanked a number of fans by name for writing to him) since a sports post on NFL star Donovan McNabb getting traded. Drake Keeps Lil Wayne’s Name Alive At BMI Unsigned Urban Showcase

Birdman, Lloyd, Big Boi, Sean Garrett, DJ Drama and others take the stage at 13th annual Atlanta show. By Jayson Rodriguez Drake performs at BMI’s 13th Annual Unsigned Urban Showcase on Tuesday Photo: Jayson Rodriguez/ MTV News ATLANTA — Drake’s a man of his word. On his latest single, “Over,” the young spitter promises that “the Young Money ship is never sinking.” And with Lil Wayne away, the So Far Gone lyricist has continued to soldier on for the camp as evident on his Away From Home tour . On Tuesday night, Drake headlined BMI’s 13th Annual Unsigned Urban Showcase and gave a shout to his incarcerated YM boss, along with fellow jailed MCs Lil Boosie and Gucci Mane. “Free Tunechi and Boosie and free Gucci,” Drake rapped during a freestyle, before telling the crowd that “they make some great music.” The event, held at the Havana Club, was hosted by crooner Lloyd and featured opening act Travis Porter and OutKast’s Big Boi, who was honored with the Legends of ATL Award. Lloyd pulled double duty during the festivities, joining Drake and his band onstage for a series of R&B-tinged hits, like “Successful” and “A Night Off.” Drake then picked things up with rowdier fare like “Uptown” and “Over.” “I know way too many people here right now that I didn’t know last year, who the f— are y’all?” he sang on the hook. Those in attendance for the packed performance included Jermaine Dupri, songwriter Sean Garrett, producer Jazze Pha, Bobby V., and DJ Drama, who co-hosted the proceedings. Drake later pulled Birdman onstage with him for their collaboration “Money to Blow.” The Cash Money boss and Drizzy did their best to keep Wayne’s name active while the rapper completes his jail sentence. “When I say ‘free,’ you say ‘Weezy,’ ” Drake directed the crowd. “I’m gonna do everything I told him I would do, what I said in the song: keep us afloat till he gets back,” Drake told MTV News last month, shortly after Lil Wayne turned himself in to police. “You won’t even notice he’s gone. Promise.” Have you seen Drake on tour? Share your own concert reviews in the comments! Related Artists Drake Lil Wayne

Lil Wayne’s ‘I’m Single’ Video Preview Leaves Fans ‘Hungry’ For More

‘This is almost tiding his fans over until he gets out,’ one fan tells MTV News. By Steven Roberts Lil Wayne Photo: Johnny Nunez/ WireImage NEW YORK — Lil Wayne ‘s newest video, for “I’m Single,” premieres Sunday at noon ET on MTV Jams and MTV2’s “Sucker Free Countdown.” The song is one of the cuts featured on Wayne’s 2009 mixtape, No Ceilings , and the clip was directed by DJ Scoob Doo. The video is one of many clips Wayne filmed before heading off to serve a one-year prison sentence at New York’s Rikers Island for weapons charges. MTV News hit the streets of Times Square to show fans a sneak peek of the video and see if Wayne’s forward thinking will keep his fans satisfied. “Even though he is incarcerated, he’s still making music, he’s still out there, he’s still got music for his fans, he’s putting it out there, and I like it,” Deanna Brown said. “I think this is something different,” she added. “Even with other incarcerated rappers, everybody’s like, ‘Wait till they get out. Wait till they get out.’ And they can’t wait for that release. This is almost tiding his fans over until he gets out. It makes you even more hungry, like, ‘Ahh, if he’s doing this while he’s incarcerated, I can’t wait to see what happens when he gets out.’ ” Other fans echoed Brown’s sentiments. Jonathan Edmonston said fans will appreciate Wayne’s dedication while he’s behind bars. “It will capture the fans’ interest,” Edmonston said. “And it will just let his fans know that he’s there for them, he loves them. I just feel he’s reaching out to them.” Are you excited to see Lil Wayne’s new video? Let us know in the comments below! Related Artists Lil Wayne

Phil Spector Receives Ass-Kicking in Jail

Phil Spector has already been roughed up by the legal system. Now the convicted killer and certified creep is receiving a new taste of jail house justice! The hot-tempered music legend is minding his tongue after having several teeth knocked out by a fellow inmate at the state prison in Corcoran, Calif. “Phil has quite a mouth on him,” says longtime pal Steven Escobar. “Not everyone understands his humor. He said the wrong thing to the wrong inmate.” Lacking any of his trusty firearms, poor Phil Spector wound up with a bruised nose, a black eye and the loss of a couple of caps, according to Escobar. This is Phil Spector. This is just terrifying . “He mouthed off to a big guy, who punched him,” a source says of Phil, who’s serving 19 years to life for shooting Lana Clarkson in the mouth in 2003. “At first, Phil said that he fell down a flight of stairs,” says Escobar of his incarcerated buddy. “Later, he told family and friends what really happened.” A spokesman for Spector’s wife, Rachelle, initially corroborated that there was a jail house incident in November, telling the N.Y. Daily News: “There are safety concerns.” “We don’t want the people who put him in this position to retaliate.” Rachelle did a 180, saying: “Phil was not assaulted. Absolutely not.” Mmm hmm.
