Will Ferrell ‘A Sweetheart’ On ‘The Office’ Set, Rainn Wilson Says

‘Anchorman’ star currently scheduled to appear in only four episodes. By Brian Warmoth Will Ferrell Photo: John Sciulli/ Getty Images Even if Will Ferrell doesn’t join “The Office” as a permanent cast member, his stint as a Dunder Mifflin branch manager already seems to have made an impact on the cast. Rainn Wilson confirmed the nature of Ferrell’s performance in the NBC series, which will soon see its figurehead, Steve Carell, depart, but Wilson also seemed a little star struck. “We’ve been doing a ton with Will Ferrell, and it is so cool,” Wilson told MTV News on Saturday night at the Independent Spirit Awards. “I just keep thinking, ‘I’m acting with Will Ferrell! This is so awesome!’ And he’s the nicest guy: just a sweetheart and so much fun.” Carell will leave a Michael Scott-sized hole when he exits the show at the end of the season, and Ferrell wanted to be a part of his “Anchorman” co-star’s final performances so much that he requested the part himself. His four-episode arc won’t install his character as the new man in charge, but it will showcase an epic fail on Scott’s part as Ferrell’s character asserts himself. “He is the new manager that Michael Scott has brought in to replace him, but we kind of swiftly realize that that’s a terrible idea. Terrible,” Wilson said. For now, exactly what Ferrell has been doing to warrant such reviews and possibly make Michael Scott look like a good management choice by comparison remains largely a mystery. More guest stars are expected to show up as Carell prepares to dedicate more of his life to making films, but it will be hard for anyone to stand toe-to-toe with Ferrell’s comedic talents. Ferrell’s effect on Wilson, meanwhile, should at least be potent enough to carry Wilson’s character (Dwight) well into the post-Scott era, however long that turns out to be. Whether a new actor emerges to take control of the company or one of the show’s other stars rises to the position, having the man who played Ron Burgundy in the same room as Carell for a while seems to be good for morale. Who do you think should play Michael Scott’s replacement? Tell us below!

Mark Ruffalo Reveals Hulk Re-Design For ‘Avengers’

‘All the features are mine, just really big,’ actor says of new look Hulk. By Shawn Adler, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Mark Ruffalo Photo: Alberto E. Rodriguez/ Getty Mark Ruffalo will soon join Edward Norton and Eric Bana as the third actor to portray Dr. Bruce Banner in as many big-screen adventures, but when the Incredible Hulk finally lines up next to Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and the rest of Marvel’s mightiest to take on evils no single one of them can handle on their own, it won’t just be the good doctor you’ll have trouble recognizing: It might be the jade giant himself. “The Avengers” will diverge from previous versions of the character and feature its own re-designed rendering of the green behemoth to more accurately reflect the new actor playing him, Ruffalo revealed to MTV News on the red carpet at the Independent Spirit Awards. Ruffalo said the character’s designers are working hard to make the Hulk look like him: “All the features are mine, just really big. I got to see the maquette of the Hulk yesterday in full scope, and it’s awesome.” The re-design makes the most of new technology being utilized for the flick, with Ruffalo donning performance-capture suits akin to the ones used by Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana for “Avatar.” According to the Oscar-nominated actor, it’ll be the first time the same actor has played both incarnations of the character. “I’ll be playing it. I’m the first actor to actually do it in motion capture as the Hulk,” he said. Back when the project was initially announced, rumors swirled that the Hulk might actually start out as the villain, tricked perhaps by Loki, as he did when the Avengers first assembled in comics. While predictably tight-lipped about his role in the plot, Ruffalo did compliment the script, insisting that the film was right “in [director] Joss Whedon’s wheelhouse.” “It’s cool. It’s gonna be great,” he enthused. “The script is a nice combination of funny with pathos.” Check out everything we’ve got on For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . Could Blake Lively Be The Next Michelle Williams?

The news that CW starlet Blake Lively would be spending her Gossip Girl hiatus filming the independent film Hick , in which she will play a meth addicted single mother, shockingly came as no big surprise. The young actress has shown a somewhat remarkable ability in choosing smart projects while also balancing her required role as a pretty and promiscuous blond on a network television show. While her cast mates are playing bland boyfriends, 3-D victims and sociopathic college co-eds during their off time, Ms. Lively is quietly, and quickly, establishing herself as a movie star — much like Michelle Williams.

‘Black Swan,’ ‘Social Network’ Lead Early Nominations

‘Inception,’ ‘True Grit,’ ‘127 Hours’ and more are already being honored by critics associations. By Kara Warner Natalie Portman in “Black Swan” Photo: Fox Searchlight With Golden Globe nominations on the way Tuesday, the 2010 awards season has officially kicked into high gear. But the Globe nods aren’t the first; the American Film Institute and a handful of critics groups have already released their faves. In looking at overall Best Film/Picture categories, the AFI and the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards selected the same nine films: “Black Swan,” “The Fighter,” “Inception,” “127 Hours,” “The Social Network,” “The Town,” “Toy Story 3,” “True Grit” and “Winter’s Bone.” AFI recognized “The Kids Are All Right” as its 10th movie in the category, while the Broadcast Film Critics Association selected “The King’s Speech.” It’s worth mentioning that as has been custom for the past few years during awards season, independent films generally garner plenty of nomination love. “Black Swan,” “127 Hours,” “The Kids Are All Right,” “Winter’s Bone” and “Rabbit Hole” are the buzzy Indies this season. With regard to regional critics’ picks in the same category, there are emerging patterns for awards-season front-runners. The Los Angeles Film Critics Association, the Boston Society of Film Critics and the New York Film Critics Circle all named “The Social Network” as the best film of the year, along with David Fincher as best director. Speaking of the directing category and the aforementioned critics groups, Fincher will likely compete with four of the following Best Director nominees from the BFCA: Darren Aronofsky, “Black Swan”; Christopher Nolan, “Inception”; Tom Hooper, “The King’s Speech”; Danny Boyle, “127 Hours”; and Ethan and Joel Coen, “True Grit.” With regard to acting nods, the field has not been whittled down quite as specifically as the film and director categories. Standouts so far include Colin Firth for “The King’s Speech” — named Best Actor by the NY and L.A. critics, as well as a nominee from the BFCA along with Jesse Eisenberg (named Best Actor by the National Board of Review) for “The Social Network” and Jeff Bridges for “True Grit.” Other contenders include Aaron Eckhart in “Rabbit Hole,” James Franco in “127 Hours” and Ryan Gosling in “Blue Velvet.” The Best Actress category is similarly conflicted thus far, with Natalie Portman (“Black Swan”), Annette Bening (“The Kids Are All Right”) and Jennifer Lawrence (“Winter’s Bone”) among the early favorites, but a front-runner has yet to emerge. Other ladies on the short lists: Nicole Kidman in “Rabbit Hole” and Michelle Williams in “Blue Valentine.” These lists add to the recognition already announced by the National Board of Review, the Independent Spirit Awards, the European Film Awards (at which Roman Polanski’s “Ghost Writer” was the standout) and the British Independent film awards. What do you think of this season’s awards darlings so far? Let us know your picks in the comments! Scientists Dress Up as Pandas to Fool Them (and Us?)

Photo: the Independent O.k.; which one is the real panda and which is the scientist? ‘127 Hours,’ ‘Greenberg,’ ‘The Kids Are All Right’ also up for best feature. By James Kuo Jennifer Lawrence in “Winter’s Bone” Photo: Anonymous Content Movie awards season is here again. And while most of the year’s big Oscar-buzz-generating films have yet to open, the indies, as usual, are a step ahead. On Tuesday (November 30), a day after “Winter’s Bone” won best feature at the Gotham Awards, the film garnered seven Independent Spirit Award nominations, including a nod for best feature. “Winter’s Bone,” directed by Debra Granik, is a dark drama about a girl (Jennifer Lawrence) looking for her father in a drug-riddled rural Arkansas community. Granik earned nominations for best director and best screenplay along with co-writer Anne Rosellini. Rounding out the nominations for Spirit’s best feature list was Danny Boyle’s “127 Hours,” Darren Aronofsky’s “Black Swan,” Noah Baumbach’s “Greenberg” and Lisa Cholodenko’s “The Kids Are All Right.” James Franco got a nod for best actor for his role as a hiker trapped in a canyon who must cut off his own arm to survive in “127 Hours.” His competition is John C. Reilly for “Cyrus,” Ben Stiller for “Greenberg,” Ronald Bronstein for “Daddy Longlegs” and Aaron Eckhart for “Rabbit Hole.” On the best actress side of Spirit nominees was Natalie Portman for her portrayal of a ballet dancer in “Black Swan,” Michelle Williams in “Blue Valentine,” Annette Bening in “The Kids Are All Right,” Greta Gerwig in “Greenberg,” Nicole Kidman in “Rabbit Hole” and Jennifer Lawrence in “Winter’s Bone.” The Independent Spirit Awards, given out by Film Independent, is a major event for films made outside of the major Hollywood studios with budgets of less than $20 million.
