U.S. Moviegoers Will Have Better And Healthier Snack Options

It isn’t quite a surprise to see or do things we traditionally do.  Fried chicken and gravy, pasta and wine, pizza and beer..fruit-vegetable-yogurt and movies??? What?? If Sony executives get their way, U.S. moviegoers will have the  better option of healthier snacks when watching movies. In a recent speech at ShoWest, the country’s largest tradeshow for the movie theater industry, Chief Executive Michael Lynton of Sony Pictures Entertainment  called upon concessionaires to provide betther and healthier options like fruit, granola, yogurt and vegetables with dip instead of high-calorie soda, buttery popcorn and candies. It’s “the right thing to do for our industry, for audiences and for our country,” said Lynton. Lynton’s colleague, Sony’s Executive Vice President for Global Communications Jim Kennedy, attempted to fight the causes of child obesity in his previous post with the Clinton Foundation. With this new intiative, he is telling CNN that Sony is asking theaters to accommodate the 60 percent of parents who feel that their overall moviegoing experience would be improved if there were healthier options available at the concession stand. Nielsen conducted a poll revealing that two-thirds of all moviegoers and three-quarters of parents would be more likely to buy the healthier options if available. Kennedy, himself a fan of a popcorn and M&Ms combo “I go back and forth between the sweet and the salt — though I wish the M&Ms came in smaller bags.” says neither set will suffer. “We’re not asking theaters to stop selling sodas, and we know most moviegoers are unlikely to change their habits. It just makes sense to offer more choices.” “It’s a new source of income for theaters. They’ve already innovated by adding digital technology and more comfortable seats. This is consistent with that level of innovation,” he said. The National Association of Theatre Owners Representatives and several major chains were unavailable for comment. According to SmartMoney.com interview with Warren Miller, senior equity analyst for stock tracking service Morningstar, of every dollar spent at the concession stand, 85 cents is profit. Ryan Ross Says It’s ‘Us Versus The World’ With The Young Veins

‘If you like it, then you do,’ he says of new group’s debut album. By James Montgomery The Young Veins’ Jon Walker and Ryan Ross Photo: MTV News When MTV News last spoke to Ryan Ross , he was in the process of finding a label to release Take a Vacation, the debut disc from his new band the Young Veins. He was confident that the hunt for a label would be resolved in a matter of weeks and that, finally, the Veins would have something (a single, a video, a tour) to show for all their hard work. Unfortunately, things didn’t quite work out that way. When MTV News spoke to Ross and the Veins at South By Southwest, Vacation still hadn’t been released, and their tour was only a few dates old. Yet, to a man — and there are five of them in the band these days — their confidence hadn’t waned, and with good reason: After months of searching, they’d finally found a suitable home for their album, which will hit stores on June 8. “It’s coming out on a label called One Haven — it’s pretty new. There’s only, like, four artists on it now and Butch Walker is one of them,” Ross told MTV News. “To be honest, the search for a label was really weird, because some of the labels that you wouldn’t expect to care about stuff like radio formats were the ones that did care. They were like, ‘Yeah, we love this record, but what are we going to play on the radio?’ And I was like, ‘You don’t have bands on the radio.’ ” And the question of format — just where does the Young Veins’ crackling, retro-leaning rock fit in the context of today’s exceedingly grim radio landscape? — is perhaps the most daunting challenge they face on their road to success. As Ross himself puts it, “I don’t know if we fit in at all, actually. “I don’t think there are a lot of bands that sound the way we do, who play the same kind of rock we do,” he smiled. “But I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that at all.” And in statements like that you catch a glimpse of Ross’ swagger, the thing that polarizes most fans of his former band, Panic! at the Disco, and has earned him a certain, uh, reputation amongst those in the industry . It’s very much alive in the Young Veins’ music too. After all, Vacation gleefully — and some might say, stubbornly — flies in the face of most modern rock axioms. It clocks in at just a hair under 30 minutes. The songs pop and hiss and are totally free of today’s studio sheen. It was made on the fly, on the cheap and practically on the lam. It is very much a labor of love, made for (and by) a very select group of retro-rock fanatics. Ross said that was the most important aspect — he wanted to get his friends together in a house and just make a record they’d all love. He’s not worried what Panic! fans — or the record-buying public, for that matter — will think of the tunes. All of that will take care of itself. “The record’s out in early June, and after that, who knows? Some of the kids don’t seem to like it, and they don’t get it, and that’s fine, I understand,” he said. “There’s definitely a sense of ‘us versus the world’ with this band. We all sort of see it as we’re all in this together. And we’re all really happy about the music we’re doing, so it’s kind of worth it. I don’t like to say, ‘Hey, we’re really good. Check this out.’ If you like it, then you do. We’re definitely working way harder than we ever have.”

Drake’s Spring Break 2010 Set Shows How Far He’s Come

In 2009, Lil Wayne brought the rookie onstage with him; this year, he’s on his own. Drake performs at mtvU’s Spring Break 2010 Photo: mtvU It’s amazing to think that at this time last spring, Drake was a relative unknown. A year ago, Lil Wayne brought Drake and the rest of his Young Money camp onto the mtvU Spring Break stage in Panama City Beach, Florida, for a performance of “Every Girl.” That shortly after So Far Gone dropped, but shortly before the mixtape took Drake to another stratosphere. Fast-forward to last week’s Spring Break 2010 shows in Acapulco, Mexico, and there couldn’t be a more perfect example of the line in his song “Over”: “I know way too many people here right now that I didn’t last year.” Drake performed that song — the first single off his upcoming Thank Me Later — for the first time on television in front of hundreds of excited, scantily clad partiers. This time, Drizzy was rapping by his lonesome, backed only by a live band. Drake recently told MTV News that he wanted “Over” (produced by Boi-1da and Al Khaaliq) to prepare everyone for what’s to come from him. “I wanted to emerge at first from this album and just let people know, ‘This is how I’m coming out in the public eye. I’m ready for anything,’ ” he said. “Then when you get the album, it’s like, ‘Oh, he’s still human. He’s still thinking the same way.’ I wanted people to understand I could have lost it. ‘Over’ could have been my entire album. Just ’cause that’s what this industry and game will do to you if you lose yourself.” At Spring Break, Drake looked like he was composed and enjoying himself — jumping around, smiling and taking time to hit a beach ball back toward the crowd. Drake’s fellow Young Money member Nicki Minaj also performs at the show. She joined Ludacris onstage in a white one-piece bathing suit covered by a see-through body suit and a platinum-blond wig as she spit her equally eccentric guest verse for “My Chick Bad.” Trey Songz also hit the stage to perform his cocksure, sultry single “I Invented Sex.” Related Videos Spring Break 2010 Performances Related Artists Drake

How Bitter Infighting May Break Up One of Tech’s Most Lucrative Conferences [Nerdfight]

High revenues and relatively low costs have made TechCrunch 50 the envy of its rivals, competing tech conferences like Demo and the Wall Street Journal ‘s D. If only its founders could stop fighting like rabid dogs. TechCrunch 50 , a Silicon Valley conference where hungry startups strut their stuff, is as volatile as it is profitable. The event nearly broke up last year amid a spat between co-organizers Michael Arrington , publisher of the blog iteration of TechCrunch, and Jason Calacanis , the Web entrepreneur. ” We fight like rabid dogs ,” Calacanis told VentureBeat, but would not “throw an amazing event like this out the window.” Or maybe they will: We’ve heard from multiple sources that a chasm has opened between Arrington and Calacanis again. Though we’ve had some help from said sources, it’s not hard to figure out what sorts of little feuds might derail one of the industry’s most lucrative conferences. We catalog some of them below, if only to provide other media-event organizers with a nice overview of traps to avoid. For their record, neither Arrington nor Calacanis would comment about their dispute for this post. Kidding around with puppets: Last year, Calacanis confirmed the conference series was finished in an interview with a puppet controlled by blogger Loren Feldman. He later unconvincingly tried to say he’d only been kidding . Purportedly his public statements about his spat with Arrington remain a point of irritation. Participating in rival events: Calacanis’ participation in Silicon Alley Insider’s Startup conference supposedly rubs Arrington the wrong way, even though it’s ostensibly a different sort of event. Conflicts of interest : Calacanis’ newly-launched Open Angel Forums are designed to help select startups get investment funding. At TechCrunch 50, Calacanis helps award prizes, potentially to the some of the very startups he helped raise money for. As for Arrington, one could argue he has an incentive to help reward startups who have been especially helpful to his coverage. That’s certainly enough basis for petty bickering (you don’t need much!). Big pointless online flame war: Calacanis became enmeshed in a big complicated online controversy and Arrington supposedly found his behavior in said fight tacky and classless. Which it kind of was. The gory details, if you care: A teenaged TechCrunch writer asked a startup founder to give the writer a free MacBook Air in exchange for an article on TechCrunch. The writer was publicly busted but the startup founder remained anonymous for a while. The startup founder, Sam Odio, emailed Calacanis out of the blue to ask advice on going public. Calacanis for some reason forwarded his email to Calacanis’ venemous blogger friend Loren Feldman, who promptly threatened to expose Odio’s not-so-terrible secret — he had originally promised to give that TechCrunch writer his bribe, “but not right now.” Odio blogged about Calacanis’ behavior and a shitstorm ensued . Just plain mean : Supposedly Calacanis has been gratuitously and exceptionally rude to some of the startups at TechCrunch 50. We’ve heard stories about Arrington being that way at other events. So, hey, maybe everyone just got on each other’s nerves, with the rudeness to other people. So there you have it: Avoid these pitfalls and your conference/event/sausage fest just might possibly avoid descending into vicious infighting. In the meantime we’ll see how long it takes before Calacanis and Arrington realize that only by taming their egos in the near-term can they play Silicon Valley kingmakers in the long term, thus allowing their egos to gloriously balloon to their fullest potential. Drake Introduces ‘Drake The Artist’ In ‘Over’ Video

‘I’ve shot a lot of videos before, but this is my first attempt to establish myself as Drake the artist,’ he tells MTV News on the clip’s set. By Shaheem Reid, with reporting by Kelly Marino Drake Photo: MTV News While filming a video for his song “Over” on Friday in Los Angeles, Drake stood in front of an all-white backdrop wearing a white tee and white sneakers. What does he do in the clip? He does him. “This is my first video,” the Young Money franchise player said, sitting in his trailer. “I’ve shot a lot of videos before, but this is my first attempt to establish myself as Drake the artist. Shooting the other videos I’ve done has been great. I really don’t care what other people think about them, they were great experiences for me. I’ve learned a lot from them. Today, I’m shooting with somebody I really look up to and respect. I’m shooting with Anthony Mandler.” Mandler, who has also made videos with Jay-Z and Rihanna, worked with Drake before on Mary J. Blige’s “The One.” “We talked colors, we talked epic, emotion-evoking visuals,” the 23-year-old Toronto native said of the collaborative “Over” video. “The story is actually interesting. The song is so aggressive, and it’s sort of a love story in the video. It has a lot to do with the album [ Thank Me Later ]. The album is about finding love, feeling ‘Have I sold my soul’ as far as ‘Will I ever be able to gain the trust of a woman? Will I only be able to be around the dark, evil women? Will I ever find that pure love?’ Those elements are in the video. I look strong, I feel great, my knee’s feeling great . I’m jumping around, doing all kinds of stuff.” The song “Over” touches on Drake reaction to fame and stardom. ” ‘Over’ was definitely a choice of mine,” he said of releasing it as a single. “I’ve got a lot of great songs on the album. A lot of songs that sound familiar but are brand-new. I still got the same emotions of the songs you love, whether it be ‘Say Something’ or ‘Best I Ever Had’ or ‘Bedrock.’ For people who enjoy what I’ve done in the past, I’ve got a lot of songs to cater to them. But ‘Over’ was a song I did for myself. “We took a trip to Jamaica, where I did a lot of work for my album,” he elaborated. “There was this calm before the storm, and ‘Over’ represented the storm to me. It’s the moment. I wanted to emerge at first from this album and just let people know ‘This is how I’m coming out in the public eye. I’m ready for anything.’ Then when you get the album, it’s like, ‘Oh, he’s still human. He’s still thinking the same way.’ I wanted people to understand I could have lost it. ‘Over’ could have been my entire album. Corey Feldman Tells Larry King About Corey Haim’s Final Days

Feldman also reveals the pair’s plans to make two ‘License to Drive’ sequels on ‘Larry King Live.’ By Josh Wigler Corey Feldman on “Larry King Live” Wednesday Photo: CNN Actor Corey Feldman, 38, appeared Wednesday night (March 10) on CNN’s “Larry King Live” to discuss the death of his best friend and colleague Corey Haim , 38. Feldman, who co-starred with Haim in movies such as “The Lost Boys,” “License to Drive” and “Dream a Little Dream,” said he was “in shock” over the news of Haim’s passing and that he had seen the late actor as recently as “three or four days ago.” “He was fine,” Feldman said when asked about Haim’s appearance at the time of their last meeting. “He was actually giving me some advice about something I was very upset about. He was being very positive.” According to Feldman, reports that Haim died of a drug overdose are premature, citing other possible factors including kidney and heart failure, an inadvertent lethal mixture of prescribed drugs, or simply his body shutting down after years of drug abuse. “Until the coroner’s report comes out and until we get specific evidence and until we know exactly what the toxicology report says, nobody knows [how Haim died], and nobody is going to know,” Feldman said. “We are aware of the fact that Corey Haim has a long and detailed drug history and battled addiction for many, many years. I know it better than anybody, because I’ve been the guy stuffing charcoal down his throat when he was [overdosing]. I’ve been the guy trying to make him stand up or say a complete sentence. I’ve been through it with him many, many times, and it’s happened very badly and very intensely through the years.” While Feldman said he appreciated the outpouring of condolences from Haim’s many mourning fans, he was disappointed that the late actor’s support didn’t reveal itself sooner. “At the end of the day, where were all of these people the last 10 or 15 years of Corey’s life?” Feldman asked. “Where were all of these people to reach a hand out to him and say, ‘You’re a legend. You’re an amazingly talented and wonderful person.’ ” Feldman said mean-spirited remarks from tabloid magazines and Web sites such as TMZ were quite troubling not just for Haim, but also for himself. In light of Haim’s death, Feldman suggested that society needs “to grow up and think about every time we laugh at somebody in the tabloids, every time we poke a finger at somebody and say, ‘They’re a joke’ or ‘They’re fat’ or ‘They’re a drug addict’ or ‘They’re washed up’ or ‘They’re a loser,’ we need to look at ourselves and say, ‘Who am I?’ ” Haim had filmed several movies prior to his death, Feldman said, including a celebrated role in “American Sunset.” Feldman also revealed that before Haim’s death, the longtime collaborators “were negotiating a deal to do [their] first movie together in nine years.” Haim was apparently in the process of pitching a sequel to “License to Drive” called “License to Fly,” which would have been followed up with a third installment called “License to Dive.” There are currently no funeral plans for the late actor, Feldman said, though he hopes to arrange a memorial service where members of Hollywood would pay their respects to the actor, citing “Lucas” and other films as reasons to fondly remember Haim’s contributions to the industry. “Hopefully, he’s going to be remembered as a beautiful, funny, enigmatic character who brought nothing but life and light and entertainment and art to all of our lives,” Feldman said. Lady Gaga Says She’s An ‘Outcast From The Music Industry’

‘I don’t have any friends in the music business,’ singer said on British talk show ‘Friday Night With Jonathan Ross.’ By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga Photo: Ian Gavan/ Getty Images Donning a hat with a telephone perched upon it and performing her single “Telephone” from a British-style payphone box , Lady Gaga appeared on an episode of the British talk show “Friday Night With Jonathan Ross,” scheduled to air this week, where she’ll dish on her love life, her role as a celebrity and her late friend Alexander McQueen. “He was the kindest human being. I feel left with nobody to inspire me any more,” she said of McQueen, who committed suicide last month . Not only were they friends, he designed many of her looks, including the lobster claw heels in her “Bad Romance” video. Gaga admitted that she has very few friends in the entertainment industry, noting that when she attended the Brit Awards last month, where she paid tribute to McQueen , “I didn’t speak to anyone at the Brits.” She added that she feels disconnected from the industry. “I’m an outcast from the music industry,” she explained. “I don’t have any friends in the music business.” As for her outlandish appearance, she said she wouldn’t have it any other way. “I would rather die than have my fans not see me in a pair of high heels. I’d never give up my wigs and hats for anything. You see legendary people taking out their trash. I think it’s destroying show business,” she said. “I feel completely detached from the celebrity world. You never see me falling out of nightclubs. Be whatever you want to be, it’s not about emulating me … it’s all right to be different.” And in case anyone was wondering if Gaga is seeing anyone these days, the answer is no. She said that right now her only relationship is with her career. “I don’t have time to get to know anybody. I’m single and alone … nobody would put up with my craziness.” In addition to “Telephone,” the BBC reports that she also sang “Brown Eyes” from The Fame. And Gaga shared her love for everybody British. “There is no greater lady than the queen ,” she said of meeting her last year. “People in Britain are the ones who’ve really been my friends.” Related Photos The Evolution Of: Lady Gaga Related Artists Lady Gaga

J-Woww: the Next Kim Kardashian?

One would think Jenni “J-Woww” Farley and Kim Kardashian could be like total BFFs, but they won’t be collaborating on skanky fashion or Quik Trim anytime soon. That’s because the Jersey Shore star completely upstaged the professional celebrity at the launch of her new Kardashians for Bebe line in New York February 16. According to reports, throngs of J-Woww admirers, which apparently exist, couldn’t keep away from her, even asking if they could touch her gigantic fake boobs. Imagine how that’s gotta make Kim Kardashian feel. So hurt was the future Mrs. Reggie Bush that she refused to pose for any pictures with J-Woww or let her backstage at her show that night. Oh, it is on , b!tches. Somebody’s jealous! [Photos: PacificCoastNewsOnline.com] But are these two really that different? Or is Kim just seething because she and J-Woww have so much in common, and the guidette is stealing her thunder? Think about it. Kim’s longtime boyfriend is NFL star Reggie Bush. J-Woww likes guys, “tall, completely jacked, steroids, like, multiple growth hormones.” Yes. One of our favorite Jersey Shore quotes right there. Meanwhile, wherever Kim goes, Kourtney, Khloe or one of her 16 brothers or sisters are sure to follow, while J-Woww and the Jersey Shore cast are mad tight. Maybe it’s a stretch, but is J-Woww the next Kim? Can anybody really replace Kim in terms of achieving undisputed A-list status for no real reason? Tough call.

Bachelor Shocker: Rozlyn Papa Sex Tape Reportedly Exists!

As celebrity sex tapes go, this is not one we can say we saw coming … but given the scandals, lies and drama of recent weeks, perhaps we should have. Rozlyn Papa from The Bachelor is the star of a new, graphic sex tape being peddled around the upstanding adult film community, according to reports. Somehow this didn’t make our Bachelor spoilers rundown last night. We apologize for the omission, as it would be far more interesting than any so far. The alleged Rozlyn sex tape is being shopped to a variety of XXX companies all over all over L.A., including LiveJasmin.com, TMZ reports this morning. Wow. We guess we can see it. It was either her or Vienna. Chris Harrison totally should have referenced this when he pimp-slapped her the other night. Kevin Blatt, a man with years of experience in the industry and a rep from the website, says he saw the Papa sex tape and claims “it’s definitely Rozlyn .” Blatt claims the tape shows Rozlyn Papa performing “one sexual act with a well-endowed gentleman.” Well, we know it’s not Jake Pavelka then. UP TOP! A rep for Papa says the reality star has, “no knowledge of any sex tape.” Then again, she denies pretty much everything else reported about her as well. Imagine if it turned out to be real, and the co-star were The Bachelor producer she was kicked off the show for having an inappropriate relationship with. Possible title: After the Final Hoes . Sorry. We got nothin’. Read more: http://www.tmz.com/2010/02/25/sex-tape-bachelor-rozlyn-papa-video-/#ixzz0gXrtCf5S
