But while a handful of notable rappers have indeed had their lives cut short at an early age from senseless gun violence, many of the genre’s voices have gone on to grow older without being shot to death. But street life isn’t the only thing threatening the lives of rappers, as shown by hip-hop pioneer Kurtis Blow , who was reportedly set to undergo his second heart procedure. He joined a growing list of other aging rappers who have suffered from health issues. The 59-year-old’s wife released a statement on Monday saying her husband’s aortic artery repair procedure was not as successful as they previously thought and that Kurtis Blow required open heart surgery, HipHopDX reported . In an Instagram post last week, he said he was “preparing for an aortic artery repair procedure.” It was supposed to “stabilize the artery from further damage caused by the hematoma I contacted from my recent travels to China,” he wrote on May 1. Email Submit While rap music is a relatively young genre and typically associated with young people, Kurtis Blow’s grave condition was shining a light on the health issues that aging rappers were increasingly facing. The fact that most rappers, especially the pioneers, are Black and brown only exacerbates that reality since statistics show that African Americans are disproportionately affected by chronic health conditions. That was especially true when it comes to the heart. Rapper Craig Mack died last year at the age of 47 from congestive heart failure. Pioneering DJ Lovebug Starski also died last year following a heart attack. He was 57 years old. Hip-hop singer Nate Dogg died in 2011 after suffering a series of strokes in the years leading up to his death. He was 41. Cancer has also targeted rappers. Just last week it was reported that Bushwick Bill of the Geto Boys had been diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer, a condition that has all but amounted to a death sentence for Black men in particular. He is 52 years old. GURU of Gang Starr died from cancer in 2010 at the age of 48 and Adam “MCA” Yauch from the Beastie Boys died from cancer in 2012. Phife Dawg from A Tribe Called Quest died from complications from diabetes at the age of 47. Obviously, these ailments don’t only affect rappers, as shown last week’s death of filmmaker John Singleton at the age of 51 following complications from a stroke he had recently suffered. But, like with everybody else, as rappers get older, these health concerns will likely become more pronounced in their lives. Cole’s KOD album has a HUGE bone to pick with him after he says Jermaine stiffed his pockets. Sixmau aka Kamau Haroon blasted Cole for allegedly being misleading in their agreement. Kamau insists Cole never made it clear that he would be replicating the artwork for tour merchandise and scoring millions off of it, while he made zero merch bucks. Kamau wrote on Twitter over the incident: “I did all the creative direction for the KOD album and he told me my work was only going to be used for booklet art . Only to turn around and make merchandise illegally with my art behind my back and profit majorly off it while on tour. Cole to license the art because his “message is of positivity.” To make matters even worse on his end, the painter claims he is on the verge of homelessness after having a trying year. Sixmau retweeted the following tweets, reinserting that he wasn’t compensated after his work was plastered over thousands of t-shirts and hoodies and he’s struggling financially. If y’all didn’t know J.Cole stole money out of the mouth of the artist @theykilledsix that painted his album cover. Cole used the artwork on tour merch without the artist’s permission. I went and met with him, saw a bunch of before and after pictures I was like, ‘this is life.’” Explaining how it works, she said, “They take out like a small portion of the back of your hair, sew it back up. And then they take that little portion of hair, and it’s kinda like when men are losing their hair, it’s the same thing, put in your brows. But this guy, Dr Champagne is amazing because he specializes in brow shape for your face.” Despite its bloody appearance, Good says it wasn’t painful. “I was like sitting in the surgery and I was like, ‘Let me see what that looks like.’ But he was like, ‘No, I don’t think you should see with it open.’ I was like, ‘Just let me see. And he let me see and and I was like, ‘Oh, this is crazy. This is really cool.” Meagan has seemingly become the brow spokesperson for Dr. Champagne. Kenya Moore really might be back on season 12 and she’s speaking yet again on the rumors. As previously reported Kenya was the catalyst for a Cynthia Bailey and NeNe Leakes’ blow up because NeNe couldn’t believe Cynthia “invited” Kenya without giving her a heads up. Now the peach chaos causer is speaking with Streetz 94.5’s Jazzy McBee on her possible return, NeNe’s nastiness and her new family. On NeNe: “You can come in in peace like I did in the last episode, I came to support Cynthia at her launch party. I was cordial with everyone, I didn’t come to be combative and start drama but yet look at the fallout that ensued. I knew I didn’t do anything wrong, I came to support my friend. That’s their issue, not mine.” On turning down RHOA season 11: “I wasn’t fired. How you gonna get fired if you have an offer on the table? Never. […] It was several reasons, things did not come together for me the way they should. I didn’t want to jeopardize my pregnancy, I was really high risk. Even though Britney Spears checked out of the mental health facility weeks ago, the drama over her 30 day treatment isn’t over. But Britney’s legal team is taking action to target one major source of misinformation. Britney is getting a restraining order against former managar Sam Lutfi, and this isn’t even the first time she’s had to take this step. Entertainment Tonight has confirmed that Britney Spears has filed for a temporary restraining order against Sam Lutfi. He is her former manager — from many, many years ago. According to the accusation within court documents, Lutfi has been harassing Britney. What’s more is that he has allegedly been harassing her mother, Lynne Spears. That is … super gross to hear. And it gets worse. Britney’s attorneys accuse Lutfi of sending harassing messages to her and to her family. He is also accused of using social media as a weapon to post false and “disruptive” material intended to whip her fans into a frenzy. Lutfi is accuses of calling for vigilante action in order to interfere with Britney’s conservatorship. He threatened to release Britney’s private information, including his personal collection from when he was her manager. Her counsel argues that Lutfi’s behavior has hurt her mental health, her emotional well being, and tainted her reputation with her fans. Sam Lutfi is a familiar name to Britney’s longtime fans. The mention of her ex manager does not evoke positive feelings for … just about anyone. She previously secured a restraining order against Lutfi way back in January of 2009. He was ordered toa void contacting Spears. The order also prohibited him from coming within 250 yards of her, her property, or her family members. Clearly, in this age of social media, further restrictions are necessary. Lutfi was part of an apparent misinformation campaign during Britney’s 30 days of treatment at a mental health facility. The cries of “Free Britney,” coupled with allegations that she was being held against her will, took off on Twitter. It was so bad that Britney had to release a video assuring fans that “all is well.” In the captions of that video, Britney dismissed Lutfi’s fake “evidence” directly. (Or, strictly speaking, whoever uploaded that video to Britney’s Instagram wrote it in the caption — she does not handle her own social media) “These fake emails everywhere were crafted by Sam Lutfi years ago,” Britney’s caption read. She made this video before she even left the mental health facility. “I did not write them,” she emphasized. “He was pretending to be me,” Britney accused. “And communicating with my team with a fake email address.” That sounds like an absolute nightmare. “Nice try Lou but this isn’t going to work this time around,” Lutfi responded. He asserted that he can “unequivocally state [he] never wrote nor had access to her e-mail.” “Her team’s desperate attempt to direct negative attention onto me (yet again) is a rather ineffective way to overshadow the FreeBritney movement,” he added. “In addition to making certain people in her camp look bad,” Lutfi accused. “The e-mails in question show a woman capable of running her own life.” He called that “a narrative they apparently want to hide.” Now, one thing on which we and Lutfi can agree — perhaps the only thing — is that Britney is a grown-ass adult who can make her own choices. She has a conservatorship hearing coming up on May 10 — that is this week, folks. Britney’s mother, Lynne Spears, will attend — this is the first time in 11 years that she has taken issue with the conservatorship. If Britney really is being unduly restricted, we hope that Britney will be able to speak for herself on the subject. Her mother is expected to advocate for her, at least in regard to Britney’s treatment. We hope that the court reaches the right decision for Britney. She deserves the world.
