The Obamas are looking to give us escape with some quality programming. Details have emerged about the slate of programming come from our forever Potus and Flotus as a part of their deal they struck with Netflix. The multi-year deal the power couple reached with the insanely popular streaming service through their company Higher Ground Productions 11 months ago is finally revealing the fruits of it. The New York Times reports the projects coming will be free of politics so Netflix’s 148 million paying subscribers will not see any Trump bashing but will focus on race, class, democracy and civil rights the former President revealed in a statement. “Touching on issues of race and class, democracy and civil rights and much more, we believe each of these productions won’t just entertain but will educate, connect and inspire us all.” The NYT revealed the seven projects that included multiple documentaries and a movie about Fredrick Douglas. Here is the breakdown: “American Factory,” a documentary that examines life in Ohio where a Chinese billionaire opened a factory in a former General Motors plant and hired 2,000 people. Higher Ground Productions described the film, produced by Participant Media and directed by Steven Bognar and Julia Reichert, as “early days of hope and optimism give way to setbacks as high-tech China clashes with working-class America.” The documentary was already shown at the Sundance Film Festival, and Higher Ground Productions said it would be its first release. “Bloom,” a drama series set in post-World War II New York that will explore the “barriers faced by women and by people of color in an era marked by hurdles but also tremendous progress.” It will be produced by Callie Khouri, who wrote “Thelma & Louise.” A film adaptation of “Frederick Douglass: Prophet of Freedom,” the Pulitzer Prize-winning biography by David W. Blight. Higher Ground did not announce a screenwriter or any producers. An adaptation of a New York Times series, called “ Overlooked ,” about people whose deaths were previously not reported by the newspaper. The obituaries have been published in a recurring feature in the paper. Higher Ground Productions said it would be a scripted anthology series. A series based on “The Fifth Risk: Undoing Democracy,” a book by Michael Lewis . “Crip Camp,” a documentary film about the origins of the disability rights movement . “Listen to Your Vegetables & Eat Your Parents,” a half-hour series for preschoolers that will “take young children and their families around the globe on an adventure that tells us the story of our food.” No release date has been revealed for any of the titles listed above, but we can’t wait to get our stream on. — Photo: The Washington Post / Getty

The 2019 Billboard Music Awards were held last night, and just like every year, the most popular artists took home the night’s top prizes. That’s not a knock against the show — the whole point is awarding the artists who sold the most copies last year. The BBMAs differ from other music awards in that there’s no voting and no panel of judges. It hands out prizes based on digital and streaming sales (and if there’s anyone out there buying physical copies of new music from new artists, we suppose that counts, too). It’s fine, we guess, except it kind of ruins the suspense, as everyone in the room knows the winner long before the presenter opens the envelope. (Also, isn’t selling the most copies already enough of a reward?) Anyway, as is so often the case at these ceremonies Drake was the night’s big winner , taking home 12 trophies to make him the most-awarded artist in BBMA history, with a total of 27 wins. He also delivered the night’s funniest moment, offering a shout-out to Arya Stark for killing the Night King — truly the top achievement of 2019 thus far. After 30 days at a mental health facility, Britney Spears is out at last . But that doesn’t mean that she’s entirely “free.” She reportedly wants to clear the air and tried to set up a tell all interview to reassure her fans and to detail recent events in her life. There’s just one problem: her own parents are shutting her down. RadarOnline reports that Britney Spears is in conflict with certain members of her family over what she can and cannot tell the public. And, in particular, with her mother. “Things are getting tense between Britney and Lynne right now,” and insider reveals. “Britney wants to do an interview,” the source explains. The insider reasons that Britney wishes to do so “because she knows her fans are so worried.” That’s absolutely right. Fans are worried about her well-being but we’re also about her personal freedoms. She’s a full-on adult. “But,” the source explains. “She’s up against opposition.” Apparently, Britney’s parents are balking at the idea that she could just do an interview. The insider claims that this reluctance is “due to the fact that every interview she’s done after a meltdown is always a hot mess.” Apparently, the stern veto came from Britney’s mom. “Lynne literally shut her down on an interview,” the source claims. “And,” the insider reports, Lynne is “also is talking to Britney like she’s a little kid.” That sounds really unpleasant, though sometimes parents at any age forget that their offspring are adults. The source characterizes that Lynne “is up her a– 24/7.” If fans are hoping to see Britney defiantly get interviewed anyway, they shouldn’t hold their breath. “Britney knows if she doesn’t follow the rules,” the insider says. “She could lose the progress she’s made.” She loves her fans, but she has to look out for herself. “Britney just wants her mom to leave her alone,” the source reports. “And the more Lynne pulls,” the insider claims. “The more Britney pushes.” In late March, Britney voluntarily checked herself in to a mental health facility for 30 days of treatment to get herself back on track. Her father, Jamie Spears, has suffered a serious health crisis, and reports say that it had really gotten to her. However, some truly wild and frankly unsubstantiated reports claimed that Britney was being held against her will . This prompted familiar cries of “Free Britney” from some of her stans , some out of genuine concern and others out of a desire to treat her like a meme. The outcry was so intence that Britney actually addressed her fans on Instagram while she was supposed to only be worrying about her well being. We should keep in mind that, just like the claim that Britney had been forced into rehab and secretly locked up since January, reports of the feud with her mom are also unconfirmed. We don’t know that Britney was itching to do a tell-all interview. Similarly, we don’t know that anyone prevented her from doing so, let alone that it was specifically her mother.
