J.R. just can’t keep his nose clean… J.R. Smith Suspended For 5 Games For Violating NBA Substance Abuse Policy Via ESPN Knicks guard J.R. Smith has been suspended without pay for five games for violating the terms of the NBA/NBPA Anti-Drug Program, the league announced Friday. Smith is recovering from offseason knee surgery and might not be ready for the beginning of the regular season. The NBA says Smith’s suspension will begin with the first game of the season for which he is eligible and physically able to play. The Knicks re-signed Smith in July to a three-year contract worth approximately $18 million with a player option for the third year. Shortly after he re-signed, Smith underwent patellar tendon surgery and an arthroscopy for a tear in the lateral meniscus of his left knee. He is expected to miss between two to six weeks of the regular season, according to a timetable provided by the team. S-M-H The NBA declined to comment specifically about the manner in which Smith violated its Anti-Drug Program. According to a summary of the program provided by the league, a third positive test for marijuana results in a suspension that is “five games longer than the player’s immediately-preceding marijuana suspension.” That is the sole scenario under which a five-game ban is administered. Friday’s suspension was Smith’s first under the Anti-Drug program, although he’s been suspended several times during his nine-year career for other infractions. He was suspended seven games in 2009 for his role in a crash that killed a passenger in his car in 2007 and resulted in a 90-day prison sentence. Smith was also suspended 10 games for his involvement in the Denver Nuggets-Knicks brawl in 2006. More recently, Smith was banned for Game 4 of the Knicks-Celtics first round playoff series in 2013 after he elbowed Jason Terry in the previous game. Watch out, Gangnam Style. Norwegian duo Ylvis has released a music video, entitled “The Fox,” that may be the biggest viral hit of the fall – if not all of 2013. Bard Ylvisaker and Vegard Ylvisaker, collectively Ylvis, begin with a simple theme familiar to anyone with kids of pre-school age: What does this animal say? Somehow, from that came the bizarre, hilarious, amazingly catchy video below: Ylvis – The Fox (Official Music Video) A Lonely Island-esque duo, Ylvis had many wondering if this was “real.” The production value of their effort, on par with the also-critter-themed Katy Perry “Roar” music video , certainly boosts the viral potential of the song. Visually, it’s a sight to behold … for better or worse. But it’s the pulsating, hypnotic, electro-pop beat that really drives “The Fox,” punctuated by the echoing, forever epic refrain, “What Does the Fox Say?!” Eat your heart out, PSY. #YLVIS4LYFE.

Appolo Nida Roughs Up Brandon DeShazer in Real Housewives of Atlanta Brawl

Brandon DeShazer, Kenya Moore’s assistant, was seriously roughed up by Appolo Nida, Phaedra Parks’ husband (below), in an epic Real Housewives of Atlanta brawl. We’ll have to wait months before this plays out on the Bravo show, but the alleged beatdown, which was caught on tape, all stemmed from a workout video. It’s not entirely clear why, but witnesses say Appolo flew into a rage and “violently attacked” DeShazer at a party that was being filmed for the upcoming season. Nida reportedly had to be restrained by SEVEN crew members. Appolo Nida was pissed because Brandon DeShazer and Kenya Moore had apparently agreed to produce a workout video starring Phaedra Parks. Instead, they went and produced their own, cutting Phaedra out. Nida felt slighted, blamed DeShazer for stabbing Phaedra in the back, and opened huge can of whoop ass on The Real Housewives of Atlanta star’s assistant. That’s according to witnesses. Nida has a different story. The reality star tells TMZ that there was a fight on the set, which he didn’t elaborate on, and that he tried to break it up and got attacked by Brandon. Nida says he defended himself but it got out of control.

Schools in 19 states are weighing students and sending reports to their parents with their body mass index (BMI) and other measurements, reports say. Kids have started calling the reports “fat letters.” Fat Letters Many families and health experts have started pushing back against the reports -slash-fat letters, arguing they could damage the children’s self-esteem. Proponents say the practice is actually an effective progress report and a tool for establishing whether a student is healthy or unhealthy physically. A person’s BMI is calculated by dividing their weight by the square of their height, then applied to their age and gender and measured against peers. BMI is the primary measurement used to determine if a person is considered overweight and obese, a condition these 19 states are trying to reduce. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than one-third of children and adolescents are considered overweight or obese. These children are believed to at increased risk for a variety of health problems, including asthma, sleep apnea, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes. None of which are good, obviously, but is it really a school’s place to call attention to it in this manner, evaluating BMI alongside students’ academic skills? Fat letters: Right or wrong? Right! This Twerking fail, in which a girl’s self-filmed sexy-dance for her boyfriend takes a sudden, nearly disastrous turn, is going viral and undeniably epic. Caitlin Heller, who posted the video, titled it “Worst Twerk Fail EVER.” She’s not lying. After some suggestive but fairly ordinary moves, she decides to get all up against the wall in a handstand a la Miley Cyrus Twerking . Only the wall was actually a door, which someone opened, knocking her down onto the coffee table, on which there were candles. You gotta see this: Twerking Fail: The Best-Worst Twerk Video Ever Wow. Just … wow. “I tried making a sexy twerk video for my boyfriend and things got a bit too hot :)” Caitlin wrote in a joke at her own expense, which we feel allows us to laugh. Lamar Odom reportedly refused another intervention with friends during the downward spiral that is torpedoing his NBA career and marriage to Khloe Kardashian. “He’s headed for destruction,” says a friend who reportedly flew out to L.A. with a handful of Odom’s pals from N.Y. in hopes of getting Lamar help. Lamar Odom: OUT of Rehab “A few weeks ago his friends from the projects back in Queens flew out to L.A. and banged on Lamar’s door trying to have an intervention with him.” “They wanted to take him home to New York and get him clean but Lamar wouldn’t open the door, telling them he ‘didn’t give a f–k what the world thinks.’” Odom added that they “‘don’t know the pressure I’m under,'” but the friends finally got him to open his door, and were distressed by what they saw . “He’s smoking crack now,” the insider revealed. His friends “knew he liked to freebase cocaine, but they were shocked to see him with crack. They found more than 60 grams of crack in his possession.” “He had no intentions of stopping.” This intervention was one of three held with Odom – the others by NBA teammates and Khloe Kardashian and family – in an attempt to get him clean. No dice. Addicted to Oxycontin and Ambien, Lamar briefly entered a rehab clinic last August under pressure from the Kardashians, but left after three weeks. That was sadly a lot longer than he lasted this week, when Odom checked out of rehab after just one day and immediately went off the grid again. His whereabouts are unknown, as the athlete and his camp have kept his estranged wife, and the entire Kardashian clan, in the dark about everything. That includes Lamar’s arrest for DUI last week, which Khloe found out about from TMZ like everyone else. Not a good sign for their future – or his life. “Lamar feels invincible because he’s rich and famous, but he also seems scared that his destiny is to be a drug addict like his father,” the source said. “He’s really struggling right now. It’s bad. We are all at a loss for words.” “His friends fear he’s suicidal and trying to smoke himself to death.”

Aaron Hernandez Pleads Not Guilty to Murder, NFL Star "Confident He Will Be Exonerated"

As expected, former NFL star Aaron Hernandez pleaded not guilty to charges of first-degree murder and more in a Massachusetts court on Friday. Six times, a charge was read and six times, his plea was “Not guilty.” Hernandez pleaded not guilty to the murder of his friend, 27-year-old semipro football player Odin Lloyd, and five accompanying weapons charges. Today was his arraignment. His next hearing is October 9. Hernandez will seek bail on that date. Until then, he’ll remain held in a Bristol County correctional facility, where he has been since his arrest on June 26. A Bristol County District Court judge has ordered the athlete held without bail, citing the seriousness of the charges and the convincing evidence . Hernandez’s attorneys will attack the circumstantial evidence next month, but bail is unlikely with other investigations – with possible links to him – pending. Just the same, his lawyers said he will be “exonerated” and asked the public not to jump to conclusions based on “one-sided and untested” evidence. “In a sense, this is like the opening kickoff,” Hernandez lawyer Charles Rankin said after the arraignment, “and we have a long way to go before trial.” “We encourage everyone to keep an open mind. We feel confident when evidence is presented in a court of law, Aaron Hernandez will be exonerated.” Last month, prosecutors divulged that police are probing Hernandez’s possible ties to a double homicide in Boston in 2012 in which two men were killed. Then, in February 2013, a shooting in Florida took place and one of Hernandez’s friends said he shot him in the face and blinded him in one eye. That friend, Alexander Bradley, has filed a lawsuit that says the ex-New England Patriot shot him as they argued in a car, then dumped him in an alley to die. Hernandez was granted a stay in that case until criminal charges against him in Massachusetts – and any other possible jurisdiction – have been settled. Stay tuned.

Teen Birth Rate Declines to Record Low in U.S.

Perhaps Teen Mom and Teen Mom 2 are becoming obsolete? The birth rate among teenagers hit a record low in 2012, government research shows. Teen Birth Rate Keeps Falling There is evidence that a trend of more effective means of birth control is a factor, according to the National Center for Health Statistics at the CDC. Watching Farrah Abraham and Jenelle Evans can’t hurt, either. The birth rate among young women ages 15 to 19 fell 6 percent last year, to 29.4 births per thousand, the lowest rate in the 73 years of data collection. The decline was across all racial and ethnic groups. The 2012 number was a significant drop and follows fairly sizable declines since 2007 , when the rate was 41.5 births per thousand young women ages 15 to 19. In fact, except for a small uptick between 2005 and 2007, the teen birth rate has been steadily declining since 1991, when it reached 61.8 births per thousand. The data used comes from the birth certificate that parents must complete at the hospital and it provides a wealth of information regarding demographics. But to figure out why exactly the teen birth rate is falling, researchers have to rely on extensive surveys, and the results are much harder to pin down. There is not much evidence of a change in abortion use and not much change in sexual activity, according to analysts, meaning birth control may be up. Or better, or better used. While condom use increased substantially in the 1990s and early 2000s among high schoolers, it actually declined slightly after that, according to the CDC. At the same time, medical professionals have increasingly been recommending the IUD, a small, plastic device that is inserted and left inside the uterus. While it does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases, the IUD can be used in combination with a condom, which does offer such protection. Beyond teens, the birth rate for American women in their early twenties also declined in 2012, to a new record low of 83.1 births per 1,000 women. Birth rates rose for women in their late thirties and early forties.
