US sues BP over oil disaster

The US is suing BP and eight other firms for allegedly violating federal safety regulations in connection with the Gulf of Mexico oil spill. The lawsuit asks that they be held liable without limitation for all clean-up and damage costs. The Deepwater Horizon drilling rig explosion in April killed 11 workers and spilled millions of barrels of oil over several months. The oil leak became the worst environmental disaster in US history. The lawsuit charges the companies under the US Clean Water Act and Oil Pollution Act. US Attorney General Eric Holder said the complaint alleges that “violations of safety and operational regulations” caused the 20 April explosion. The companies targeted in the lawsuit are BP Exploration and Production Inc, Anadarko Exploration & Production LP, Anadarko Petroleum Corporation, MOEX Offshore 2007 LLC, Triton Asset Leasing GMBH, Transocean Holdings LLC, Transocean Offshore Deepwater Drilling Inc, Transocean Deepwater Inc and QBE Underwriting Ltd/Lloyd's Syndicate 1036 – BP's insurer. The key accusations are: * Failing to take necessary precautions to keep the Macondo Well under control in the period leading up to the April 20th explosion * Failing to use the best available and safest drilling technology to monitor the well's conditions * Failing to maintain continuous surveillance * Failing to use and maintain equipment and material that were available and necessary to ensure the safety and protection of personnel, equipment, natural resources, and the environment Halliburton, the company that cemented the Macondo Well, and Cameron International, which provided equipment for the well, were not targeted in the lawsuit. But the Justice Department said on Wednesday that the investigation into the oil spill was ongoing and more defendants and charges could be added to the suit. “We intend to prove that these defendants are responsible for government removal costs, economic losses and environmental damages without limitation,” Mr Holder said. “As investigations continue, we will not hesitate to take whatever steps necessary to hold accountable those responsible for this spill,” Mr Holder added. Mr Holder did not specify a timetable in the lawsuit, instead saying the US would move as quickly as possible in the matter. Eleven workers on the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig were killed by an explosion which followed, and hundreds of miles of coast were polluted before it was stemmed in July. added by: Jake_Leonard

Justin Bieber Won’t Face Charges In Laser-Tag Incident

Pop star was accused of punching a 12-year-old boy in the face. By Gil Kaufman Justin Bieber Photo: Getty Images It looks like Justin Bieber will not have this on his permanent record. After facing possible sanction for an incident at a Richmond, British Columbia, laser-tag park where he allegedly punched a 12-year-old boy in the face, police in Richmond said they have decided not to file charges against Justin Bieber. “The file in regard to the alleged assault at the entertainment center has been concluded, and no charges will be forwarded,” Corporal Turley of the Richmond Royal Canadian Mounted Police told MTV News on Tuesday (December 14). “The investigation is complete.” Turley said the evidence collected did not support going forward with the investigation, noting that she was unable to confirm whether Bieber was one of the persons involved because of a law prohibiting the dissemination of information into criminal cases involving youths. Bieber had been accused of getting into a scuffle with the unidentified boy during an October 15 session at the Planet Lazer Entertainment Center in Richmond. According to reports, Bieber got angry when the boy allegedly hurled a homophobic slur at him and lashed out in response. The boy sustained minimal injuries after what TMZ reported was an incident in which Bieber, 16, was targeted by an overzealous laser-tag player who used an anti-gay slur against him. When the 12-year-old stuck his hand out toward Bieber, the “Baby” singer reportedly batted it away and left the park. A short time later, Bieber spoke out against bullying and posted an “It Gets Better” clip. In it, he said, “Hey guys, I’m Justin Bieber. I just wanted to say there’s nothing cool about being a bully. And if you’re getting bullied, make sure to tell someone and, you know, it gets better. And if you’re a bystander, make sure to step in and, you know, help out.” Related Artists Justin Bieber

3-Million-Year-Old Whale Unearthed at the San Diego Zoo

Workmen constructing a storm water equalization tank this week at the San Diego Zoo dug up a surprising find: a 3-million-year-old whale. The construction crew was using an excavotor to dig through fine grain sand, when suddenly the machine struck a solid item. Further investigation revealed that this obstacle was an enormous prehistoric whale. Our genus, Homo, wasn't even around 3 million years ago, so this wasn't some sort of super prehistoric zoo. The site then, during the Pliocene, was under water. The 24-foot baleen whale appears to be very well preserved, with much of the fossilized skeleton present. Finding an intact skull, along with the vertebrae and flippers, is quite rare, according to Sarah Siren, San Diego Natural History Museum paleontological field manager. link: http://news.discovery.com/animals/the-3-million-year-old-whale-unearthed-at-the-… added by: eva2

UPDATE 09-19-10: FOUND Unharmed |13 Members (Including Eight Children) of "Cult-Like" Group Missing | May Have Plans for Mass Suicide | Palmdale, California | Videos

14 members of 'cult-like' group missing Six adults and eight children of a “cult-like” group in southern California were reported missing Saturday after they left behind notes saying they were going to meet Jesus and dead relatives, authorities say Police: Missing 'cult-like' group may have plans for mass suicide By the CNN Wire Staff September 19, 2010 3:32 a.m. EDT Members of a church group led by Reyna Chicas were reported missing amid fears they may be planning to take their own lives. Los Angeles, California (CNN) — A “cult-like” group of 14 Salvadorans — including eight children — is missing in southern California after leaving behind notes indicating plans to commit a mass suicide, authorities said. The six boys and two girls in the group are ages 3 to 17, said Steve Whitmore, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. “The letters essentially state that they [missing persons] are all going to heaven shortly to meet Jesus and their deceased relatives,” the California governor's office said. “Numerous letters found say goodbye to their relatives. It is believed, through further investigation, that the missing persons' intentions are to commit mass suicide.” Investigators issued an alert Saturday night asking for assistance in locating the group from Palmdale. The alert was issued after two husbands of church members reported them missing, the governor's office said in a statement. Though the notes did not mention suicide, the outcome seems like a strong possibility, Whitmore said. The group is traveling in three vehicles — a 2004 Nissan Quest, a 1995 Mercury Villager and a remodeled Toyota Tundra, according to Whitmore. The group was reported missing Saturday afternoon — after it held a prayer meeting. “They left behind personal belongings and written notes … [saying] they're going to see dead relatives and Jesus,” Whitmore said. Items left behind include deeds to homes and cash, indicating “that someone is leaving it behind,” Whitmore said. The spokesman issued a televised plea to the group. “If you're watching this, come home,” Whitmore said. “Come home alive to the people who care for you.” Anyone with information is urged to call the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Retailers Launch First National Non-GMO Month

This October, more than 580 natural food stores nationwide will take part in the first ever Non‐GMO Month, celebrating consumers' right to choose food and products that do not contain genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Organized by the non‐profit Non‐GMO Project, the event coincides with the launch of the “Non‐GMO Project Verified” seal on retail products. The process of genetic modification, which takes place in a laboratory, typically merges DNA from different species, creating combinations of plant, animal, bacteria and viral genes that cannot occur in nature or in traditional crossbreeding. Virtually all commercial GMOs are bred to withstand direct application of herbicide and/or to produce an insecticide. None of the GMO traits currently on the market offer increase yield, drought tolerance, enhanced nutrition, or any other consumer benefit. Studies, meanwhile, increasingly show a correlation between consumption of GMOs and an array of health risks. With U.S. consumer confidence shaken by ongoing food safety failures, distrust of GMOs is growing. As a result, more and more consumers are seeking non‐GMO choices, and Nielson reported in February of this year that “GMO‐free” is now the fastest growing store brand label claim. The Grocery Manufacturers Association estimates that GMOs currently are in approximately 80% of conventional processed foods in the United States, but they are not labeled. This is in sharp contrast to most other developed nations around the world, where there are significant restrictions or outright bans on GMOs because they're not considered proven safe. To fill the information gap, a “Non‐GMO Project Verified” seal has been created. Manufacturers earn the seal through compliance with rigorous GMO avoidance standards, including ingredient testing, as part of the nation's first third party non‐GMO verification program. Nearly 900 products have been verified to date, with thousands more in the process of becoming verified and new products joining the program every day. Non‐GMO Month celebrations will draw consumer attention to Non‐ GMO Project products, as well as educate them about the GMO issue. “The Non‐GMO Project stays true to our mission to offer food in its most natural and unadulterated state, ” said Michael Besancon, Whole Foods Market senior global vice president of purchasing, distribution and marketing. “We're committed to offering non‐GMO food and products and to educating consumers so they can make informed choices.” Whole Foods Market stores nationwide will be participating in Non‐GMO Month, and Whole Foods also in the process of having its entire 365 private label brand verified to the Non‐GMO Project Standard. Close to 300 independent retailers and co‐ops also are participating in Non‐GMO Month. “Retailers started the Non‐GMO Project because of consumer concern and requests for non‐GMO foods,” said Corinne Shindelar, CEO of the Independent Natural Food Retailers Association (INFRA). “We have a responsibility to consumers to ensure the integrity of our food system, and among shoppers who value safe, healthy food, there is a strong desire to avoid GMOs. Non‐GMO Month is a fantastic opportunity to give people the information and non‐GMO choices they are looking for.” added by: JanforGore
