REVIEW: Scorsese’s Hugo Melds Modern Filmmaking with a Glorious Sense of the Past

God help filmmakers who become legendary: Even if they manage to avoid becoming prisoners of their own high standards, there’s no escaping those of their audience. And so Martin Scorsese has taken perhaps one of the biggest risks of his career — bigger, even, than making a radiant, low-key movie about the origins of the Dalai Lama — in adapting Brian Selznick’s subtle and wondrous children’s novel The Invention of Hugo Cabret . You just know there’s going to be some asshole at the dinner party asking, “Yes, but how does it compare with Taxi Driver ?”

Apple’s iOS 5 Update Now Available For iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch [TECH]

Read this article:

It’s IAmGWoods with a little tech news. Yes, I am #TeamApple. After 128 days, 7 Beta releases, and 1 gold master, it’s finally arrived. iOS 5 has just been released to everyone (or at least, everyone with a compatible iOS device). For those who hadn’t finagled their way into the developer Beta’s: 1) you’re a more patient human than I could ever hope to be, and 2) you’re in for a treat. This is the biggest update iOS has seen since the addition of the App Store, and it’s jam-packed full of good stuff. The iOS 5 update is compatible with the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 (GSM and CDMA), iPod touch 3rd/4th generation, and the iPad/iPad 2. It’ll also come preloaded on the 4S, of course, when that device launches later this week. It’s been a while since iOS 5 was announced to the world, so here’s a quick recap of some of the biggest features: iCloud: Apple’s cloud-based content/data syncing service. Backs up your content, photos, etc. in the cloud for safe keeping, provides one-click access to redownloading all the apps you’ve ever purchased, etc. iMessage: Apple’s free iOS-to-iOS messaging solution. SMS dies today. Notification Center: Apple has completely overhauled their old, antiquated alerts system. You now drag down from the top of the screen to see a drawer with all notifications. Newstand: Bundles all of your e-magazine/newspaper subscriptions into one smart folder Reminders: a new to-do/reminder system, complete with location-based alerts Twitter Integration Much improved Camera UX (You can access the camera with a double tap of the home button on the homescreen, and use the volume up key to take a photo) Crazy simple photo editing (Cropping, rotating, red-eye reduction) within the Photo app Over-the-air updates and PC-less device activation Downloading the update is pretty simple: just plug in, pop into iTunes, tap on your device’s name in the left-hand navigation, and click the “Update” button found on the page that pops up. If you’re not seeing the update, give it a few minutes — the servers are getting hammered pretty hard right now. Eff An iPad! Amazon’s Kindle Fire Is Making It Rain On Them Hoes For Half The Price

Good news for the folks who can’t afford to break the bank for a shady overpriced iPad2 … Amazon just unveiled their new tablet — the Kindle Fire and it’s sposed to be very comparable. At a press event in New York City on Wedesnday, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos took the wraps off the company’s tablet offering. The Kindle Fire will sell for $199, will run a modified version of Google’s Android operating system, will feature a 7-inch display and will be deeply integrated with Amazon’s cloud storage system and its massive online content library of books, music and more. According to AllThingsD’s live blog of the event, pre-orders open for the Fire on September 28; devices will ship November 15. Ahead of the official announcement, Bezos gave Bloomberg Businessweek some of the details about the tailor-made OS and the content that will be available on the Fire. “Amazon has painted over the rough surfaces of Google’s Android operating system with a fresh and easy-to-use interface and tied the device closely to its own large and growing content library,” Bloomberg explains, based on a briefing from Bezos. “Kindle Fire owners can watch the film Rio, scroll through magazines such as The New Yorker or Esquire, and access their music collection on Amazon’s servers.” The device will also run a custom-built “split browser” called Amazon Silk, which “accelerates the power of the mobile device hardware by using the computing speed and power of the Amazon Web Services Cloud,” according to a statement provided by Amazon. “The Silk browser software resides both on Kindle Fire and on the massive server fleet that comprises the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2),” Amazon’s statement also reads. “With each page request, Silk dynamically determines a division of labor between the mobile hardware and Amazon EC2 (i.e. which browser sub-components run where) that takes into consideration factors like network conditions, page complexity, and cached content.” GDGT’s Ryan Block notes that the WiFi-only Kindle Fire is merely a “stopgap” product, hence its pre-holiday release. Writes Block, “[M]y sources tell me the second-gen Kindle tablet will be out in Q1 of 2012 — yes, that soon.” This Kindle Fire definitely sounds like it can compete, especially since Amazon has such great ebook services. Would you cop one of these or are you Team Apple all the way? Source
