The Voice is back, and better than ever. In the Season 2 premiere, the NBC “second chance” singing competition showed why it became a hit last spring – the chemistry of the four judges/coaches and the under-appreciated talent auditioning in front of them. For those unfamiliar, the judges sit with their backs turned and if they like a person trying out, sight unseen, they turn around. That person then chooses which of the four stars he wants to help him/her win the title. Let’s get down to business and see who joined Team Christina Aguilera, Team Blake Shelton, Team Cee Lo Green and Team Adam Levine last night … Jesse Campbell and his surprising, tragic back story took second fiddle to his rendition of “A Song For You” that caused all four judges to turn around.

C’mon son… The captain of the ill-fated Costa Concordia had been drinking ‘with a beautiful woman’ at the ship’s bar before he sailed into disaster, it was claimed last night. Francesco Schettino, 52, has been arrested on suspicion of multiple manslaughter and abandoning ship when the cruise liner ran aground after sustaining a 160ft gash in the port-side hull. Six people are now confirmed dead and 14 are still missing. The sixth person – a male passenger – was found dead wearing a life vest on the second deck of the ship, according to an Italian news agency. That area of the boat was not submerged. One passenger has accused the captain of drinking in one of the ship’s bars on the night the vessel ran aground, before taking control after the crash. Monique Maurek, 41, from the Netherlands, said: ‘What scandalised me most was when I saw the captain spending much of the evening before we hit the rocks drinking in the bar with a beautiful woman on his arm. B-b-but wait it gets worse… ‘Most people didn’t even have any idea of what the evacuation warning sound would be. ‘It was only because some of us had already been on a cruise that we recognised that seven blasts of the horn was a signal to abandon ship.’ Phil Metcalf, whose daughter Rose was one of the last people off the ship, said she had revealed the captain allegedly abandoned ship in the early stages of the evacuation, leaving his staff onboard. He said: ‘Since the captain had left there was nobody, so everybody was left to their own devices hence some of the chaos, so obviously the crew took it upon themselves and decided in the absence of the captain to organise and try and help people.’ So this dirty son-of-a-beyotch jumped ship soon as isht got ugly??? Newt Gingrich is just throwing $h!t at the wall at this point. During his college years in the ’60s, Mitt Romney spent two years as a Mormon missionary in France. Now, Newt is trying to use that time against his rival as part of his desperate, scorched-earth campaign for the Republican presidential nomination. Here’s his new ad, titled “The French Connection” … Newt Gingrich Ad – French Connection The crux of the ad – that Mitt Romney isn’t too different politically from failed Democratic Massachusetts presidential hopefuls Michael Dukakis and Sen. John Kerry – might’ve been effective, but Newt is clearly just bitter at this point. In a parting shot, the voiceover explains: “Just like John Kerry,” the voice in the ad says, “he speaks French too!” Mitt Romney: He’s … multilingual! Guess he and Jon Huntsman are automatically DQ’d in Newt’s mind.
For the first time since his firing and the subsequent charges of child sex abuse against ex-defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky, Joe Paterno has spoken out. Telling Sally Jenkins of The Washington Post that he’s “shocked and saddened” by what has become of his former football program, the iconic coach admitted he “didn’t know which way to go” after he was informed Sandusky had been caught engaging in appropriate behavior with a child in the shower . Asked what coach Mike McQueary told him about the 2002 incident – in which the assistant swore to the grand jury that he heard “slapping” sounds emanating from the shower and then witnessed Sandusky seeming to anal raping a young boy – told him 10 years ago, Paterno said : “He didn’t want to get specific. And to be frank with you I don’t know that it would have done any good, because I never heard of, of, rape and a man. So I just did what I thought was best. I talked to people that I thought would be, if there was a problem, that would be following up on it.” After six decadees of coaching the football team, Paterno was fired by the Board of Trustees over the phone, an action wife Sue still finds inappropriate. “After 61 years he deserved better,” Sue Paterno said. “He deserved better.” Paterno is now 85 and has been diagnosed with a treatable form of lung cancer. He isn’t sure what to do with his life, but concludes: You know, I’m not as concerned about me. What’s happened to me has been great. I got five great kids. Seventeen great grandchildren. I’ve had a wonderful experience here at Penn State. I don’t want to walk away from this thing bitter. I want to be helpful.”
Here she is… Miss America! Congratulations are in order for Laura Kaeppeler, as this 23-year old brunette from Kenosha, Wisconsin earned the honor in Las Vegas last night, impressing judges with a chic evening gown she compared to Kate Middleton’s wedding dress . Laura Kaeppeler: Vote for Me! Kaeppeler sang an Italian aria for her talent, while responding to a question about whether or not Miss America winners should voice their political views by rambling on about how they represent the country as a whole and, therefore, no, should remain neutral on all such topics. Kaeppeler earned a $50,000 scholarship for her victory and hopes to build a platform around mentoring children of incarcerated parents. She’s one of those herself.
After ‘Ye mentioned his possible involvement in the film, Denise Di Novi tells MTV News about a ‘fun brainstorming conversation’ with the MC. By Eric Ditzian Kanye West Photo: Pascal Le Segretain/ Getty Images In what would easily be the coolest movie news of 2012, Kanye West dropped word in the midst of a scorching series of Twitter updates that he was in discussions to join up with a long-gestating adaptation of “The Jetsons.” “I was just discussing becoming the creative director for the Jetson movie,” he wrote. Could it be true? The live-action adaptation of the futuristic Hanna-Barbera cartoon — starring George Jetson, his boy Elroy, daughter Judy, Jane his wife, plus their robot maid Rosie — has been in development for years, with Robert Rodriguez attached to direct at one point. MTV News put in a call to producer Denise Di Novi, who confirmed that talks with ‘Ye had indeed taken place. “Kanye’s always been a Jetsons fan, I think because he’s so into design and he loves the design aspects,” she told us exclusively. “So we had a fun brainstorming conversation.” The call took place after West touched base with producers and told them he was interested in working on the project. “We heard that he knew we were working on the Jetsons,” Di Novi said. “He reached out and said he’s a huge Jetsons fan. There are a lot of Jetsons fanatics out there, especially people that are into either futuristic science or design. He was interested in creatively brainstorming what we were doing with the movie and what ideas he might have. It was a really friendly, preliminary conversation.” At this point, though, Di Novi is unsure if Kanye will actually sign on to become creative director of “The Jetsons.” “He was going to think about it more and see if he got inspired visually,” she said. “He’s a very visual artist.” Kanye did mention in his Twitter spree that he was annoyed about one suggestion that arose during the conversation. “Someone on the call yelled out.. you should do a Jetsons tour!” he wrote. “This just happened a few hours ago. I was very insulted of course because for anyone that’s seen the Watch the Throne Tour…Or Coachella or Glow in the Dark or Runaway.. you know I have real ideas.” Di Novi, however, said the tour comment was nothing more than a good-natured joke, especially because her production company is involved solely in the movie business. “We were just kind of joking about that,” said Di Nova, whose credits include “Crazy, Stupid, Love” and many Tim Burton films. “I don’t know if he would want to do that, but it was just a fun comment.” What do you think Kanye would bring to a “Jetsons” movie? ‘We’re hitting the boardwalk hard,’ JWoww says of the new season, which premieres Thursday at 10 p.m. ET on MTV. By James Montgomery “Jersey Shore” stars Jwoww, Snooki, Sammi and Deena Photo: MTV News The “Jersey Shore” gang heads back to their spiritual home of Seaside Heights on the fifth season, which premieres Thursday at 10 p.m. ET. And from the sound of things, that triumphant return couldn’t have come quickly enough. After a drama-filled Italian holiday, the “Shore” stars were looking forward to getting back to the boardwalk. “We’re hitting the boardwalk hard and [there’s] just overall excitement,” JWOWW told MTV News. “[There was] the anticipation and the anxiety of just being home, because we were away from our family and friends for so long. It’s a little overwhelming.” Those same sentiments were echoed by the guys of the “Shore” earlier this week, when they told MTV News that the in-house tensions that plagued the cast during season four — infighting, headbutting, ill-fated hookups and vehicular mishaps — had all but disappeared by the time they hit Seaside (thanks to the availability of good barbers and “easy women”). The girls were especially happy to bid arrivederci to Italy. And let’s just say they hit the ground running. “I think in Italy it was all drama because we missed home and obviously some people were stirring up unnecessary fake rumors in the house,” Snooki sighed. “So when we get back to Jersey, you’re gonna see that pan out more. But altogether I think we just couldn’t wait to get home and we went crazy.” The fifth season of “Jersey Shore” premieres Thursday, January 5, at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV. For continuing “Shore” coverage, be sure to check in with MTV’s Remote Control blog. Are you excited for the fifth season of “Jersey Shore”? Share your thoughts in the comments! Michele Bachmann is railing against Ron Paul and Kent Sorenson, who left his post as head of her Iowa campaign effort to go work for her rival instead. Presidential hopeful Bachmann implied that Paul, who is running much stronger in Iowa, bought off her key staffer a week before the state’s caucuses. “Kent Sorenson personally told me he was offered a large sum of money to go to work for the Paul campaign,” Bachmann said in a statement to Fox News. GOP Debate: Paul vs. Bachmann “Kent campaigned with us earlier this afternoon and went immediately afterward to a Ron Paul event and announced he is changing teams.” “Kent said to me yesterday that ‘everyone sells out in Iowa, why shouldn’t I?’ then he told me he would stay with our campaign,” Bachmann added. “The Ron Paul campaign has to answer for its actions.” In response, Paul’s campaign said Bachmann’s Iowa political director “unequivocally stated Kent Sorenson’s decision was in no way financially motivated.” Sorenson attributed his decision to Paul’s higher standing in polls, where he is battling Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum for the top spot. Jesse Benton, Paul’s national campaign chairman, welcomed the endorsement from Sorenson, himself an Iowa State Senator, before the Jan. 3 vote: “Congressman Paul is delighted to accept the endorsement of Senator Kent Sorenson, whose blessing and assistance carry a great deal [of] weight.” “He doesn’t take this decision lightly, which says a lot about the senator and Ron Paul.” He also picked up an endorsement from Kelly Clarkson this week. Can he pull off a masterstroke and upset the field next week? Stay tuned. Ron Paul: The Big Dog!
