The Italian Mafia is Making Money with Wind Power

Photo: The Godfather Cosa Nostra Goes Green It seems like the mob has discovered that there’s money to be made with wind power in Italy. The mafia is up to its usual tricks: fraud, extortion, bribery, money laundering, etc. Police wiretaps even caught an alleged mafioso telling his wife: “Not one turbine blade will be built in Mazara unless I agree to it.” Read on for more details…. ‘Resident Evil: Afterlife’ Stars On Their Weapons Of Choice

‘In this movie, I have a lot more guns,’ Milla Jovovich says. By Kara Warner Milla Jovovich Photo: MTV News While much has been made of the current pop-culture obsession with vampires, there has been an equally fervent fixation on zombies (e.g., “Zombieland,” “28 Days Later,” “30 Days of Night,” AMC’s upcoming “The Walking Dead”), and this week marks the release of the fourth “Resident Evil” film. In this latest installment, “Resident Evil: Afterlife,” the story picks up roughly six months after “Resident Evil: Extinction.” Alice (Milla Jovovich) is desperately searching for survivors — first near a small town in Alaska, where she finds Claire Redfield (Ali Larter), and then in desolate, undead-ridden Los Angeles. Despite being the fourth film in the franchise, “Afterlife” contains a couple of notable firsts: the appearance of Chris Redfield (Wentworth Miller) and an Alice vs. Albert Wesker fight sequence. Speaking of fighting, when we caught up with the film’s two leading ladies recently, we asked them to share their preferred method/weaponry for eliminating zombies. “I like to get in there,” Jovovich said. “In ‘Resident Evil 3,’ I had my cookeries. I like the hacking, chopping bit. It’s nice to hit some flesh and bone and [hear the] crack. It made me feel really strong and powerful,” she revealed. “In this movie, I have a lot more guns, that was fun too.” Jovovich went on to compare the shooting of machine guns to playing guitar. “I never realized shooting guns is a lot like playing guitar — you need calluses for it,” she said. “After a day of shooting machine guns, I got blisters on my fingers. It’s like, ‘Oh, I need to practice a bit more and get those calluses going,” she said. “But thank god I don’t have to shoot machine guns every day.” Co-star Ali Larter agreed with Jovovich’s preference for hacking things, but admitted she has a special place in her heart for fancy Italian firearms. “I get to use an Italian Beretta in this film that’s never been on camera before, so that’s fun,” Larter bragged. “I also like using my knife and getting at Wesker. That’s pretty cool.” Larter went on to say that she and her co-stars were pretty bruised and battered by the end of the shoot as a result of the intense action sequences. “We spent a lot of time with stunt coordinators, with the weapons experts, making sure that we were doing it right and we were doing it safe. When you have five actors lined up and you’re shooting blanks — it’s one thing if everyone is 50 feet away, but when you’re within 3 feet of someone, you can really get hurt,” Larter explained. “It’s making sure that with all of us you really take the time to be professional.” “You also want to look real,” she added. “I don’t want to look like a sissy with a Beretta. I want you to believe that I will take your ass out.” From the saucy Jessica Alba in “Little Fockers” to James Franco’s grueling journey in “127 Hours,” the MTV Movies team is delving into the hottest flicks of fall 2010. Check back daily for exclusive clips, photos and interviews with the films’ biggest stars. Elisabetta Canalis and George Clooney Not Engaged

Engagement rumors started after the Italian TV presenter Elisabetta Canalis, 31, was spotted holding up her left hand and jokingly showing off the faux bauble while dining with the actor George Clooney, 49, and some friends in Italy. False alarm – George Clooney hasn#39;t given up his famous bachelor status just yet. Though girlfriend Elisabetta Canalis flaunted some new jewelry on her ring finger this weekend, turns out the serious bling was actually a napkin ring, Clooney#39;s rep tells us.

AP Headline: ‘Flight attendant’s grand exit is a dream for some’

It would seem that what JetBlue flight attendant Steven Slater did earlier this week was the stuff that some small-minded people’s dreams are made of. Would all of you out there who think that way please remove yourselves from jobs that involve contact with the public? One has to wonder, based on her sympathetic paean to the “take this job and shove it — but first, I’ll get my revenge” crowd, if Associated Press Writer Samantha Gross should be among those who deserve involuntary removal from such positions. Ms. Gross’s grotesque near-admiration for others concocting their own supposedly grand exits is my nominee as Exhibit A exemplifying the media’s “strange fascination” with the Slater incident and its meaning noted at this morning’s open thread at NewsBusters. Here are some less than exemplary excerpts from Ms. Gross’s gruel , including a few paragraphs exemplifying people the AP writer apparently intended to portray as nearly noble (bolds highlighting leftist phraseology and boorish behavior are mine): Hasn’t everyone thought about doing it? … Defying the rules, telling people off and walking off a job isn’t usually a launching pad for public acclaim and admiration. But few have fulfilled that particular working man’s fantasy in such grand fashion as JetBlue flight attendant Steven Slater, who left his job via the plane’s emergency chute, beer in hand. It was enough to set America’s heart aflutter. Slater’s sudden exit has rekindled memories of workers’ liberation – and sparked wistful excitement among workers who have long fantasized of choosing pride over pay. … After being scolded for the last time by a boss she believed was treating her unfairly while sleeping with the other waitress on her shift, she (waitress Mary Phelps) seriously considered knocking over the giant pot of tomato sauce sitting on the Italian eatery’s stove. Instead, she walked to the front of the restaurant and took orders from six tables sitting down at the beginning of the dinner rush. Then, before bringing anyone so much as a drop of water, she left. “It felt fantastic. It was a great feeling,” she recalls. “It was absolutely no regrets, absolutely. …” (Phelps’s customers who received seriously delayed service were apparently unavailable for comment — Ed.) (Chris Carter of Knoxville, who says he has walked out of about half of the jobs he has held) says he still gets a thrill of victory every time he walks out the door. “When you’re not making more than $10 an hour, there’s certain things that are not worth putting up with,” he says. “I’ve never allowed myself to get to that point where I feel like I have to put up with this and I have to be somebody’s slave.” Gross reports that Carter is only 30 years old and has held “nearly 40 jobs,” meaning that he has walked out of nearly 20. You’ll have to excuse me for thinking that Carter’s dreams might be more about milking the unemployment compensation system — funded, mind you, by those who put up with their oft-annoying managers and the companies who employ them — than they are about finding a personally rewarding way to serve his fellow man. In this culture, it looks like  there’s another perfectly good reason why employers are reluctant to hire. Of course, there’s the oft-cited  regime uncertainty  of the Obama administration’s legal and regulatory policy and postures. But what about new hire uncertainty? In a culture where significant numbers seem to be treating Slater as a hero, many smaller employers are more likely to either get the work done with the existing help, do without, or contract the required work out to someone else (e.g., a temporary help firm) to avoid the unpleasantness and negative business consequences of someone who thinks he or she can be the next Steven Slater.  Interestingly, Gross cited no examples of federal government worker walk-offs. I wonder why? There’s certainly no shortage of alienation, rudeness, or inattentive behavior. But there is at least one important difference. Uncle Sam’s worker walkouts are probably less frequent because federal pay and benefits are on average twice as high as the private sector, according to this Tuesday USA Today report . Why would a person with an attitude problem want to make a grand exit from that, when they can get their perverse satisfaction beating up on customers all day and still keep their jobs? Kanye West’s ‘Power’ Video: A Cultural Cheat Sheet

Clip pays homage to Renaissance painting, M.C. Escher, ‘House Of Flying Daggers.’ By Gil Kaufman Kanye West (file) Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage Most music videos aim to overwhelm you with quick cuts, big explosions, clever editing tricks and flashy sets that look really expensive. Then there’s Kanye West’s clip for “Power.” Never one to follow trends — peep how he’s already reinvented the art of Tweeting in just a week — West’s 90-second clip is less a video and more a moving painting in which a grim-faced ‘Ye stands center stage while a galaxy of saintly and devilish female figures surround him. Director Marco Brambilla said his intention was to create a video “portrait” that would “visualize power … to do a portrait of what power would look like in a sort of timeless way.” We spent way too much time studying what feels like a trailer for a larger piece of conceptual art and broke down the imagery in the video. If it’s been a while since your last art history class, get ready to go to school: Dragonlance: An image of a sword descending into a crown hovers over Kanye’s head, bringing to mind Volume Two of Douglas Niles’ series “The Crown and the Sword: The Rise of Solamnia,” in which Sir Jaymes Markham commands the orders of the Rose, Sword and Crown. M.C. Escher’s “Waterfall”: The Dutch artist famous for making eye-popping images in which gravity and space were twisted into pretzels sketched an image in 1961 in which the water at the base of a waterfall appears to be flowing uphill against gravity before reaching the top of the fall, much as the water pours towards the sky out of two urns held by maidens in the Kanye clip. Chiaroscuro: The monochromatic clip plays with this Renaissance style of painting, in which the artist used sharp contrasts between light and dark to highlight the drama on the canvas. Often, unseen sources of light would illuminate the subjects; in the clip, Kanye appears to have an inner glow that manifests in his eyes and the sword and crown above him cast a light on the entire scene. Jean-Leon Gerome: The French painter known for his love of historical painting with Greek mythological themes created an image entitled “Head of a Woman with the Horns of a Ram,” which is not unlike the albino-like female figures sprouting long, pointy horns who frame ‘Ye. “House of Flying Daggers”: Though he’s transposed the action from China to ancient Greece, Brambilla might be paying homage to the 2004 action-romance “House of Flying Daggers” with the scene at the end of the video, in which two combatants are flying through the air in mid-sword fight as white bursts of light fill the screen. Ed Moses’ “HOLA”: This features a haunting single eye glowing behind a swirl of heavy brush marks that some have compared to the mask of a superhero. In “Power,” Kanye’s eyes have an eerie glow as he stares unblinkingly, also not unlike actor Idris Elba’s Heimdall in the upcoming movie “Thor.” Michelangelo: From the rows of Ionic columns surrounding him to the floating parade of gauzy-shift wearing Greek men and women who drift into the frame, Brambilla is clearly taking some inspiration from the classic frescoes painted by Italian Renaissance painter and architect Michelangelo. Q-Tip: The legendary rapper and member of A Tribe Called Quest released an album called The Renaissance in 2008. He said the reference to that period was more than just an album title and a sign of his unwavering commitment to keeping his art pure. Ancient Egypt: Yeezy once again rocks the unbelievably fat chain he wore at the BET Awards earlier this year. Its giant pendant is an image of Horus — the Egyptian god of the sky, war and protection. ‘Jersey Shore’ Fans In Miami Weigh In On Change Of Scenery

‘They bring a little life to Miami,’ one fan tells MTV News. By Mawuse Ziegbe Cast of “Jersey Shore” Photo: MTV After bar-brawling, club-hopping and GTL-ing their way to pop-culture stardom, the “Jersey Shore” kids had to take things to the next level in season two. So the crew upped the ante by taking the drama to another shore. In the second season of the MTV reality hit, which kicked off last week, the gang fist-pumps its way through Miami, and for the most part, South Beach fans have been enjoying the party. “I love ‘Jersey Shore.’ It’s … crazy,” Francisco Santander told MTV News. Denise Mata concurred: “[There is] always drama there, and it’s fun to watch [the] fights and them getting drunk, and it’s just funny to me.” The “Shore” crew has partied its way into fans’ hearts but has also weathered criticism that the super-tanned, party-startin’ housemates — who proudly champion the term “guidos” — reinforce Italian stereotypes. David Gliottone enjoys the craziness but has issues with their image. “I like the fact that they’re Italian,” Gliottone said. ” I don’t like the way that they act sometimes, [because] I think it kind of brings a negative vibe to the Italian community.” Nora Weinberg said she thinks the “Shore” stars should keep the drama up north, but added that it’s cool they’re branching out beyond the boardwalk. “I think they should be in Jersey, but I think it’s fun that they can go to Miami,” she said. George Ott said the crew’s antics have reached beyond the shores of both Jersey and Miami to score fans Down Under. “[I’m a] huge fan of the show in New Zealand,” Ott said. “[I] love the boys [and] JWoww.” As entertaining as fans find the cast’s beachside escapades, one viewer said the “Jersey Shore” crew may have brought too much heat to Miami. “I think the ‘Jersey Shore’ cast is really crazy and outgoing and they bring a little life to Miami,” Cassandra said. “But they need to stick to Jersey because they’re not supposed to be here doing that stuff. You don’t see that here in Miami.” What do you think about the “Jersey Shore” cast being in Miami? Let us know in the comments below! Don’t miss “Jersey Shore” every Thursday at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV.
