Stephen Dorff Says Jack Nicholson Will Love ‘Somewhere’

‘I think he’ll identify with it so much,’ Dorff suggests about his friend and one-time co-star’s opinion of the acclaimed new film. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Stephen Dorff Photo: MTV News Ever since they shared screen time in the 1997 heist flick “Blood and Wine,” actors Stephen Dorff and Jack Nicholson have remained close friends. Their relationship may not necessarily be “bromance” territory, but it’s close enough that Dorff has shared his career ups and downs with the Oscar winner, and asked for his advice over the years. When MTV News caught up with Dorff recently to talk about his critically acclaimed new film “Somewhere” — a role that he called the most challenging of his career — he said he thinks the flick is one Nicholson will really enjoy. “I think he’s going to really love this movie because to me it’s a film that isn’t made anymore today,” Dorff explained. “It’s such a character piece and I think he’ll identify with it so much. Dorff revealed that he already got a big thumbs-up from Nicholson after “Somewhere” took home the top prize at Italy’s Venice Film Festival in September. “After we won Venice I remember telling him how excited I was,” he recalled. “And he’s like, ‘Way to go, Dorff!’ ” We then brought up the fact that Nicholson has taken several actors under his wing over the years — pointing out to Dorff that the Hollywood legend had taken an interest in “Mad Men” actress January Jones when she was first starting out. “Well, he takes an interest in a lot of women, let’s be honest,” Dorff responded with a chuckle. “He definitely took me under his wing. I think it’s rare for Jack to take a young guy under his wing — he’s not hanging out with too many guys. “He did do that with Sean Penn and he’s definitely given me great advice over the years,” Dorff added. “I always feel like I have him as a friend and he’ll show up if he can. And he’s always been my favorite actor, so for me, he’s a friend, and it’s nice to get a little star struck still. It keeps me remembering who I am and where I am, and Jack’s still somebody that makes me a little nervous.” If Dorff has his way, he and his buddy Jack will take their friendship to the big screen via a comedy the younger actor is hoping to make with Adam Sandler’s production company. “It’s a very funny comedy idea for me and him set in the South of France,” Dorff told the UK’s Independent newspaper last month. “We’re not in script form yet but I wrote the treatment and they’ve already bought it so as soon as I get a break from working, I’ll turn that into a script and I’ll go and tell Jack. … And I’ll get Sony to give him his $15 million and then we’ll go and make the movie — because he likes money.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Somewhere.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Michael Jackson Album Sales: Not Invincible

Michael Jackson’s posthumous new album, Michael , sold 228,000 copies in the U.S. and hundreds of thousands more abroad in its first week. The domestic haul lagged only Taylor Swift’s Speak Now (259,000) and Susan Boyle’s The Gift (254,000). Not Invincible , but very formidable. While perhaps a bit of a letdown by MJ standards, the “new” material was unreleased for a reason, and his sales trounced Crystal Bowersox . Not surprisingly, the late King of Pop’s label notes that he ” shipped platinum ” in 14 different territories, meaning a million or more units were sent to those areas. That’s different from his sales, which weren’t nearly that high, but it’s indicative of the interest his camp feels Michael will generate over the coming months. MJ hit #1 Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Sweden. He was #3 and #4 in Japan and the UK, respectively, but sold more than 100,000 copies in each. The moral of the story? While will.i.am and Ne-Yo don’t approve of the album, and the Thriller days are long gone … the man is still pretty darn legendary. Could space farmers grow crops on other planets?

Some scientists question whether soil is necessary for space agriculture Science fiction lovers aren't the only ones captivated by the possibility of colonizing another planet. Scientists are engaging in numerous research projects that focus on determining how habitable other planets are for life. Mars, for example, is revealing more and more evidence that it probably once had liquid water on its surface, and could one day become a home away from home for humans. “The spur of colonizing new lands is intrinsic in man,” said Giacomo Certini, a researcher at the Department of Plant, Soil and Environmental Science at the University of Florence, Italy. “Hence expanding our horizon to other worlds must not be judged strange at all. Moving people and producing food there could be necessary in the future.” Humans traveling to Mars, to visit or to colonize, will likely have to make use of resources on the planet rather than take everything they need with them on a spaceship. This means farming their own food on another planet that has a very different ecosystem than Earth's. Certini and his colleague Riccardo Scalenghe from the University of Palermo, Italy, recently published a study in Planetary and Space Science that makes some encouraging claims. They say the surfaces of Venus, Mars and the moon appear suitable for agriculture. more, at LINK- – – http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/40418493/ns/technology_and_science-space/ graphic- http://www.dunecraft.com/img/products/gift%20ideas/space-plant1.gif added by: remanns

Nicki Minaj Fans Swarm New York MAC Store For Glimpse Of Their ‘Idol’

‘She is so different and inventive,’ one die-hard says of Pink Friday MC. By James Kuo Nicki Minaj arrives at the MAC cosmetics store in Times Square on Tuesday Photo: Slaven Vlasic/Getty Images NEW YORK — Nicki Minaj took New York City by storm Tuesday (November 23) while promoting her debut album, Pink Friday. Her first stop was the Times Square MAC Cosmetics store, where she talked about her special edition Pink Friday MAC lipstick. Her fans — known as Barbiez — eagerly awaited her appearance. Jasmine Taylor, 23, was “super excited” to see Nicki. “She is my idol. I live for her. I’m, like, shaking right now,” said Jasmine, who sported a Nicki Minaj haircut and a glittering “Barbie” necklace. “She keeps it real and is so personable. The guys give her respect because of her lyrics.” Kelly Baker, a student at New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology, wasn’t dressed like Nicki, but she was just as big a fan. What draws Kelly to Nicki is how she is not like any other artist. “She is really different and the only person who I can think of that is like her is — I don’t know. I think she is so different and inventive.” Eric Cruz, 23, loves her so much that he wanted her to sign his neck so he could get it tattooed on him permanently. All her fans came armed with the new Pink Friday album, hoping to get their copy signed. Tishae Lauren from the Bronx had to go to three different stores until she finally found a few lingering copies at Walmart — which she promptly bought up. All the Barbiez in the crowd thought Nicki would outsell Kanye West and My Chemical Romance, who also dropped new albums Monday. “I think Pink Friday will do good because everybody loves Nicki. She’s the sh–,” Anthony Pecheco insisted. Her fans are also excited about her upcoming documentary, “My Time Now,” which premieres Sunday, November 28, on MTV. “I’m excited because we always see her as a cartoon character,” Tishae said. “Finally, we get to see her more serious side.” Nicki also drew one fan all the way from Rome. Mario Petroccione came to New York just to see his favorite female MC. “She’s huge, and I love her,” he said. “She never comes to Italy, so that’s why I come to New York to see her.” When asked what it was about Nicki that got him to fly all the way from Rome, Mario replied, “She’s just lovely.” Did you rush out to the store to get Pink Friday ? Let us know in the comments! Don’t miss the documentary “Nicki Minaj: My Time Now,” premiering Sunday, November 28, at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV!
