In jarring NFL news, the Philadelphia Eagles released star wide receiver DeSean Jackson Friday, despite the 27-year-old turning in a career-best 2013 season. The Eagles decided not to bring him back in 2014 not for financial or football reasons, but because of his alleged ties to gang members in Southern California. DeSean Jackson Released By Eagles Over Gang Ties The team’s announcement came shortly after NJ.com published a report by Eliot Shorr-Parks and A.J. Perez that outlined the alleged connections of the NFL star. According to the bombshell article, DeSean Jackson has ties to gang members in Los Angeles who have been connected to at least two homicides since 2010. Citing unnamed sources, it reported that the Eagles were more concerned with Jackson’s off-field relationships and behavior than with his on-field performance. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the Eagles were aware of the alleged relationships in the report and opted to release Jackson rather than pursue a trade. According to Schefter, “it got to the point where the Eagles knew not only about the revelations in that story, but they knew other information as well.” “The Eagles, in their good conscience, could not fathom the idea of trading DeSean Jackson knowing he has some of the issues he does right now.” The team Tweeted, “After careful consideration this offseason, Eagles decide to part ways with DeSean Jackson. The team informed him of his release today.” That’s it. Eagles center Jason Kelce responded to the news: “We just made an extremely unpopular decision, but I couldn’t be more excited and happy with where this organization is going!! #FlyEaglesFly” Former NFL wide receiver Donte Stallworth felt the move was indicative of the NFL’s increased weariness of players’ off-field behavior and relationships. In the wake of former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez being charged with the murder of Odin Lloyd , teams are reevaluating rosters. He writes: “It is what it is, dude. I know how much you loved Philly, but on to the next chapter homie! Keep grinding, use it as fuel! @DeseanJackson10” “But… the situation surrounding Aaron Hernandez has changed things. If teams THINK you’re affiliated, then you’re already guilty.” UPDATE : Jackson has responded with his own statement … “First I would like to thank the Eagles organization, the Eagles fans and the city of Philadelphia for my time in Philly. I would also like to thank coach Andy Reed for bringing me in. Secondly, I would like to address the misleading and unfounded reports that my release has anything to do with any affiliation that has been speculated surrounding the company I keep off of the field. I would like to make it very clear that I am not and never have been part of any gang. I am not a gang member and to speculate and assume that I am involved in such activity off the field is reckless and irresponsible. I work very hard on and off the field and I am a good person with good values. I am proud of the accomplishments that I have made both on and off the field. I have worked tirelessly to give back to my community and have a positive impact on those in need. It is unfortunate that I now have to defend myself and my intentions. Organizers of a DNA test claimed on Thursday to have proven that Michael Jackson is the biological father of the younger Howard, a singer born in 1981. Howard has long been rumored to be the child Jackson referenced in the 1982 hit single “Billie Jean” with the famous line: “The kid is not my son.” Mother Miki Howard, was repped by Jackson family patriarch Joe Jackson in the 1980s and appeared in the 1993 movie Poetic Justice with Janet Jackson. Brandon does not have a birth certificate, but the genetic mystery reached its bizarre apex on Thursday at a press conference in Beverly Hills. Organized by shipping heir Alki David and streamed live on his FilmOn (dot) com website, the alleged proof of the late King of Pop’s paternity was revealed. Brandon Howard wasn’t present for the hyped announcement but confirmed in a Facebook post that he gave a DNA sample for the test to be conducted. Dr. Joseph Goodman, a Beverly Hills dental surgeon, revealed the results, and claimed he obtained a sample of Michael Jackson’s DNA from a dental device. He purchased the device at auction, he said, and pulled a piece of paper from an envelope saying the test pegged a parental match at “99.9 percent.” “I think we have the proof,” Goodman declared … but is it, really? Brandon Howard DNA Test Reveal Despite Goodman’s claim, the paperwork did not include names of test subjects or the name of a lab, but he said such tests are typically done anonymously. Brandon Howard has admitted Michael is a big inspiration for his work, but he claimed Thursday he had nothing to do with David’s press conference. “I’ve never self-proclaimed to be Michael Jackson’s son,” he said in a Facebook video. “I’m definitely not suing the estate. I’m taken care of very well.” “And also, I make my own cash, OK?” Brandon Howard Speaks on DNA Test Stranger still, a source close to the famous family has professed that it was Joe Jackson, the King of Pop’s pop, who is the actual father of Miki’s baby. “I’ve been hearing for years that Brandon is Joe’s son,” the source said, adding that the family “just doesn’t buy” claims that Michael knocked her up. Confusing the issue more (if that’s possible)? Singer Augie Johnson has declared publicly that he’s B. Howard’s actual biological father, according to a report in the International Business Times . He had this to say on the topic in a recent interview with WPIX New York : Well you have Wall Street and Harlem on the same island. And when you think about Yahoo and Ebay and companies like Amazon with no blacks on the board, that’s a great disparity. Beyond the issue of freedom, we’re free but not equal, the disparities keep growing. It happens because of discrimination. You have patterns that target race discrimination. For example, for many people, their first business was their home. But when these banks foreclosed on homes after subprime lending, the banks got bailed out but the people got left out. We embraced the dream but we didn’t embrace the civil rights. You have to enforce equal opportunity [employment] and affirmative action. For example, what does it mean that 50 years later, there are zero black owners of Coca-Cola franchises? ONE owner of a Pepsi-Cola franchise? 20,000 automobile dealerships and only 200 are black? NFL and there’s not one black owner; [professional] baseball not one; only one in basketball. These patterns of economic segregation have basically been left off of the table. Jesse Jackson has opted to weigh in on Phil Robertson and his inflammatory comments, calling the Duck Dynasty star worse than Rosa Parks’ bus driver. While Robertson’s anti-gay comments in GQ got him suspended by A&E and ignited a national controversy, he made other eyebrow-raising statements as well. Specifically, he said the Nazis needed Jesus, and opined that African-Americans were happier and not mistreated in pre-civil rights era Louisiana. Collectively, the interview spurred Jackson into action. “These statements uttered by Robertson are more offensive than the bus driver in Montgomery, Alabama, more than 59 years ago,” Jackson told ABC News. Why does he think Robertson’s comments are worse? “At least the bus driver, who ordered Rosa Parks to surrender her seat to a white person, was following state law,” said the 72-year-old minister. “Robertson’s statements were uttered freely and openly without cover of the law, within a context of what he seemed to believe was ‘white privilege.'” Jackson, his Rainbow PUSH Coalition and GLAAD want to meet with A&E execs, along with Cracker Barrel’s CEO, to discuss the future of the show. He wants to meet within 72 hours with A&E and Cracker Barrel, a major Duck Dynasty sponsor, to urge the network to uphold Robertson’s suspension. Jackson and GLAAD said that they believe it’s not right for a personality with such a large platform to benefit from such comments or to go unpunished. Phil Robertson: Not Sorry For Anti-Gay Comments Don’t look for an apology, however, from the religious Robertson. Sunday, he defended himself and comments about gays being sinners to his Bible study group in West Monroe, La., while hitting back at his critics. “I will not give or back off from my path,” he reportedly said.
