Mavado On Co-Starring In Drake’s ‘Find Your Love’ Video

Dancehall star says he may appear on a remix for the song. By Rahman Dukes Mavado Photo: Young Money Dancehall artist Mavado is one bad dude. In the Anthony Mandler-directed clip for Drake’s latest single, “Find Your Love,” the singer delivers on his promise of a threat against Drizzy, who was warned to stay away from the Boss’ lady. As a result, Drake pays the ultimate price for his decision to move forward with his romantic pursuit of Mavado’s leading lady (or does he? The ending of the video is left open). But when the cameras are off, Movado says he Drake are good friends. “Me and Drake were friends for quite some time now,” Mavado told MTV News on Tuesday (May 11). “He ended up coming to Jamaica together with me while I was finishing my album. And he said, ‘Yo, I want to do this in Jamaica.’ The video with me and Drake, it’s a bit different, but trust me, it’s very perfect. I’m loving that video.” Mavado’s character in “Find Your Love,” Puffy, is first introduced in the video at Kingston’s landmark Asylum Club, although it’s called “The Building” in the clip. Mavado said that’s just one of the ideas he brought to the table for the dramatic clip. “They came up with the script and I knew what they really wanted,” he said. “Me and my man, we’re in Jamaica and I’m on the ‘Gully Side,’ so I know just the perfect spot.” Contrary to the storyline in the video, which ends with Drake’s capture by some of the island’s most notorious thugs — a.k.a. “dogs” — Mavado said his people had nothing but love for the Canadian. “It’s a good vibe on the ‘Gully Side’ and the part where I’m from, the people love him there.” Last month during his Away From Home Tour, Drake echoed Mavado’s words “We went to this ‘hood. They call it the ‘gully’ side’ ” Drake said. “It’s bad out there, real bad. They had ‘Young Money’ sprayed on the gates, ‘Drake and Wayne,’ ’cause I came to shoot the video out there. I’m talking about you drive by people’s homes, they had ‘Drake,’ ‘Young Money,’ ‘Drake, Welcome Here,’ ‘Drake We Love You’ — crazy sh–, man. It was so crazy. This dude was like, ‘Original Weezy tha God! You tha boss! Weezy tha God!’ It’s crazy. They love us, ’cause we show love out there.” According to Mavado, the collaboration on “Find Your Love” is just the first offering between the pair, and fans should expect more to come. “Me and Drake, we already been talking about it but you know, Drake is on his tour doing his thing. But I guess when it’s the right time, it’s going to happen. I believe it’s soon. I’m supposed to do a remix for that song.” What do you think of Drake’s new video? Let us know in the comments below! Kelis Works With ‘Amazing’ Benny Benassi, David Guetta On Remix EP

‘Acapella,’ the first single from Flesh Tone, gets the dance-music treatment. By Akshay Bhansali Kelis Photo: Denise Truscello/WireImage Acapella — The Remixes, an EP of electronic variations of the first single off Kelis ‘ forthcoming Flesh Tone album is available digitally Tuesday (April 6), featuring production from a handful of Kelis’ apparent favorites from the dance/electronic music world. The original version of “Acapella” was produced by current dance-music crossover star David Guetta , so it’s not surprising he maintains an extended mix on the EP. Notably, Kelis also teamed up with Grammy Award-winning Italian dance-music producer Benny Benassi recently, the results of which are a Benassi-helmed remix of “Acapella,” Benassi’s upcoming single “Spaceship” and another song on Flesh Tone. MTV News caught up with both Kelis and Benassi just before they took the stage to perform both “Acapella (Benny Benassi Remix)” and “Spaceship” at the recent Ultra Music Festival in Miami for a crowd of close to 100,000 people. The occasion marked the first time the duo performed the song together for a live audience. “He’s amazing,” Kelis said. “He’s been amazing. He did a remix for me … that’s ridiculous. I just think his take on stuff is very him. You recognize his sound, and that’s important for a producer. I love the fact that I can give him a record to remix and it literally sounds like a new song.” “This was a big opportunity for us,” Benassi said. “To work with her … it’s a beautiful experience because we get to put our bass line and our energy for dance music with a beautiful voice.” Other producers included on Acapella — The Remixes EP are L.A. house DJ/producer Dave Aud

Consequence Works With Kanye West, Q-Tip On Upcoming Album

‘I don’t need your money, I need your ears,’ MC says of his latest mixtape release, to Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid Consequence Photo: MTV News Don’t Sleep: Necessary Notables Mixtape : Movies on Demand Headliner : Consequence Key Cameos : “Whatever You Want (The G.O.O.D. vs. Bad megamix)” (featuring Kid Cudi, Common, John Legend, the LOX and Diddy), “The More I Get” (featuring Rick Ross) and “Down This Road” (featuring Maino) Essential Info : Consequence has a whole multimedia movement at hand. The MC who always has a strong viral-video game, is driving home the point that his material requires more than just sitting down and listening to it on an iPod. He just released his latest mixtape Movies on Demand to set up his summer LP Cons TV, named after his series of vlogs a couple of years ago. The official project is being helmed by his label CEO and his legendary cousin, Q-Tip. “This album — the first time ever you have a album executive-produced by Kanye West and Q-Tip, which essentially makes it, from a soundscape point of view, The Blueprint meets Midnight Marauders, ” he said of West’s work on the Jay-Z classic and Tip’s work with A Tribe Called Quest. “It’s an incredible album.” The Jamaica Queens native is also banking that his new tape will get the people on point for the project down the line. “It was incentive — the reason for putting out Movies on Demand was because I really had to drive home the point of what the album was gonna be and sonically what people had to look forward to,” Con explained. “Sometimes when you have such a gem … it catches late. You have to have creative and innovative ways to catch people’s interest. That’s why I gave the mixtape away for free — I don’t need your money, I need your ears. I’ll get the paper later. I’ll get the paper regardless. But when I have your ears and you’re hearing these lines and the authenticity to what hip-hop is — that’s priceless. “That’s something I grew up on,” he added. “Hip-hop has always been something to come out of nowhere, that’s why I think with Movies on Demand, it executes all the fundamentals that hip-hop brings to the table from the grassroots level to its highest peak.” Consequence just released the video for his Movies on Demand duet with Asher Roth, “Childish Games.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Diplo ‘Not Mad At’ Rihanna For Similarities Between ‘Rude Boy’ And M.I.A.

‘It’s cool because she looks beautiful in the video,’ Diplo says. By Hillary Crosley Rihanna in her video for “Rude Boy” Photo: Def Jam Recently Rihanna dropped the pop-art video for her single “Rude Boy” — and at least one person has commented on what he feels are similarities between it and M.I.A. ‘s “Boyz” and its video. “Riri is lookin soo damn hawt in this video but its super boyz boyz boyz #howmaydere ? yahmsayin?,” Diplo tweeted earlier this month. The next day, the producer recorded and tweeted a mash-up of “Boyz” and “Rude Boy” onto the web via his Twitter account. Still, Diplo says he’s a RiRi fan. “I downloaded Rihanna’s album as soon as it came out because I was interested in seeing the pop world’s take on dub-step [musical style], because that’s what they were supposed to do,” Diplo told MTV News. “It was pretty weak except for ‘Rude Boy,’ which is one of my favorite songs of the year thus far. I’m glad it came out as a single, but when I saw the video I was like, ‘This is a total rip-off of M.I.A.’s “Boyz” video, with a little bit of Santigold as well.’ But it’s cool because she looks beautiful in the video. I just thought it was funny.” With three albums released between them, M.I.A. and Santigold — Diplo has produced tracks for both artists; his collaborator Switch produced “Boyz” — rule the genre-bending space of alternative R&B, reggae, dubstep and rock. M.I.A.’s influential single “Paper Planes,” from her LP Kala LP, dropped in 2007, and then the track was sampled by Kanye West for T.I.’s 2008 single “Swagga Like Us” featuring Jay-Z, Lil Wayne and West — a very pregnant M.I.A. joined the team for a performance during last year’s Grammy Awards . Like M.I.A., Santigold’s work has been a critical favorite but hasn’t sold in large numbers in the states. Both ladies continue to fly under the pop culture radar, but Diplo says their work seems to move the needle of the music industry . “I’m here recording in Jamaica with Santigold and producer Switch, who’s part of the group Major Lazer with me — we always come with really progressive ideas,” Diplo said. “Even with our Major Lazer single, ‘Pon De Floor,’ after a year of the record leaking, now it’s become the single for the labels to follow even though it’s old for us. A&Rs want a record like that now, but we offered that record to all of those people a year ago.” The producer said he’s happy that his work is appreciated, but he has to work extra hard to gain recognition for his ideas. “People at the major labels always seem to be a bit slow to catch on to stuff that’s trend-setting,” he added. “Like M.I.A.’s single ‘Boyz’ was so cutting edge, crazy and hyper-fast that it was scary for people when we made it, but now that type of music is digestible for people because M.I.A.’s already blazed a trail for alternative reggae urban music so we made it safe for Rihanna to do cutting edge things. I’m not mad at [“Rude Boy”], especially because Rihanna looks super hot in the video and it looks amazing, better than “Boyz.” I’m used to getting our shit ripped off. We’re paving the road so that other people can drive on it.” At press time, a rep for Rihanna had not responded to MTV News’ requests for comment. Related Artists Rihanna M.I.A.
