James Cameron Discusses Sending 3-D Cameras (And People) To Mars

‘I want to make films about this and get people excited about [space] exploration,’ the ‘Avatar’ director says. By Kara Warner James Cameron Photo: MTV News For Oscar-winning director James Cameron, whose box-office clout at this point seems unmatchable, making mega-blockbusters like “Avatar” and “Titanic” might not be enough. So next year, Cameron is taking his filmmaking expertise to the final frontier. In April, it was announced that Cameron had partnered with NASA to help build a 3-D camera mounted atop the Mars rover Curiosity for a mission planned for launch next year. When MTV News caught up with the filmmaker, we asked if, in addition to sending 3-D cameras to Mars, he’s thinking about how to send humans there. “Oh, yeah, I’ve been thinking about the issues of sending human beings to Mars for a long time,” he admitted during a press day for the re-release of “Avatar.” “I started 11 years ago working on a Mars project that led me to doing a lot of research, meeting a lot of people at NASA, getting involved with people, and then at a certain point, a couple years ago, they said, ‘Wait a minute, this guy knows a lot about Mars, he knows a lot about 3-D cameras, zoom lenses, motion photography, all the things we’re incorporating into this new camera system. Why don’t we bring him in?’ ” Cameron said one thing led to another, and suddenly, a partnership was born. “I’m actually on the team developing the new camera for the Mars Science Laboratory, which launches next year,” he said, adding that if all goes well, we could see 3-D photos of the red planet in the very near future. “Theoretically, we will have a motion-image stereoscopic camera on the surface of Mars in 2011, and it will be making the first 3-D movie on Mars — well, it’s not a movie, but we’ll be taking 3-D shots.” As for humans making the trip, Cameron added that it will require a couple of things — namely, a shift in our national interest. “The public has to want it — that’s number one — because it has to be paid for. I think commercial, new, lean enterprises like [PayPal co-founder] Elon Musk’s company SpaceX , which is going to be creating human transportation to the space station. They’re a good candidate to build the systems that could get us to Mars, for example,” he said. “But it still requires the national will, and right now, that national will, quite frankly, isn’t up to the task. People don’t care about it enough, which is why I want to make films about this and get people excited about exploration.” Cameron ended his thoughts with a question for the public: “Frankly, what would you rather spend your money on: pointless wars in the Middle East to support our oil addiction or going to another planet?” What do you think about Cameron’s involvement with NASA and space exploration? James Cameron Says Government Ignored His BP Oil Spill Advice

‘The source of the report was contaminated in their minds because there was a Hollywood guy involved,’ he says. By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Josh Horowitz James Cameron Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images Although he’s known for staging elaborate film productions versus resolving massive environmental crises, James Cameron has been vocal about fixing the BP oil spill that has ravaged the Gulf Coast. The “Avatar” filmmaker even assembled a team of experts in the field to figure out how to fix the largest oil spill in U.S. history. However, Cameron said that when it came to reviewing the strategy developed by his collective of engineers and scientists, government officials failed to take the plan seriously. “We worked [on] the problem for a couple of weeks … and submitted a 25-page report to the Department of Energy and … to the [U.S.] Coast Guard that said what to do,” Cameron told MTV News. “It was promptly ignored by everyone and guess what? At the end of the day, they did exactly what we recommended. I’m not saying they did it because we recommended it. I think they did it because it was the right thing to do. But they basically did exactly what we said should be done.” Cameron said he was motivated to assist the cleanup effort because he felt analysts outside of the oil giant should have a say. “If you’re relying on BP for imagery, you’re basically relying on the criminal’s video of the crime scene,” he asserted. Cameron maintained that officials ignored the report because of his status as an entertainment figure. “I think because BP was giving them a line of sh– every single day and they were believing it. I also think it’s because the source of the report was contaminated in their minds because there was a Hollywood guy involved,” Cameron said. “[Officials] tend to shy away from media if they can’t control it, which completely obviated the valuable contribution of the other 23 people on the team, who are all the cr

‘Avatar’ Re-Release To Highlight Tsu’tey Death

James Cameron says nine minutes of deleted scenes will be added when the flick returns to theaters on August 27. By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Josh Horowitz James Cameron Photo: Getty Images Fans will learn more about Na’vi life when James Cameron’s blockbuster epic, “Avatar,” returns to the big-screen on August 27. Cameron told MTV News that moviegoers will check out nine minutes of unseen footage featuring life on Pandora. Although news of the re-release originally touted roughly eight minutes of deleted scenes, the director said he threw in an additional 60 seconds. The footage also includes an expanded version of the demise of Na’vi hunter Tsu’tey, who was killed during the climatic clash between the Pandora natives and the human army. “There’s a pretty powerful emotional scene at the end which is Tsu’tey’s death … which happens off-camera in the original release. [In the original film] he kind of falls off the back of the shuttle and that’s the last that you see of him but here we follow through. We have this emotional scene with Jake [Sully] and Neytiri and some other Na’vi that gather around him in the forest,” Cameron said. The director added that the decision to cut down on Tsu’tey’s passing was initially met with resistance from his fellow filmmakers. “It’s a funny thing because everybody that was working on the film, when I said I’m taking out Tsu’tey’s death, they said, ‘What? You can’t that!’ They had all fallen in love with it [because] it’s a pretty powerful moment,” he said. “It’s such an amazing accomplishment on [visual effects supervisor Timothy] Webber’s part because the emotionality in the CG is really quite stunning.” Cameron said the additional “Avatar” scenes involve four major moments, each around a couple minutes long, that turn up in the movie after the human soldiers fly a chopper into the lush Pandora rainforest for the first time. The revamped flick will also introduce fans to a new element of the alien environment: a herd-like creature called a Sturmbeest. “There’s a big scene we called the Sturmbeest hunt,” Cameron said. “The Sturmbeest is an animal that basically will be new to audiences because all of the Sturmbeest stuff got cut out. Once I took out the hunt, I took out the scene where I establish it [and] I took out the moment where it appears in the final battle. All that stuff’s now been reinstated so there’s gonna be a lot of Sturmbeest in your diet.” Cameron lamented that many scenes were originally nixed to either keep the up pace of the flick or to avoid derailing the budget of the technologically innovative enterprise. However, the director said scenes that were added to the re-release are big on non-stop action. “We’ve got a scene where the Na’vi attack the bulldozers after the scene where they’ve mowed down the willow glade,” Cameron said. “It’s kind of [an] action scene plus the aftermath with the human troopers finding the bodies of their friends.” He added that the scene provides added context for the subsequent conflict between the Na’vi and the humans. “It’s sort of like the stepping stone of the escalation to war. We sort of jump over all of that in the [original] film. [Human leaders Colonel Miles Quaritch] and [Parker] Selfridge just say, ‘OK, alright, let’s go take ’em out.’ But this sort of shows that there are steps in the process.” What are you looking forward to seeing in the new “Avatar” scenes? ‘Avatar’ Sex Scene Might Be In Extended Film, Sam Worthington Hints

‘There’s a sex scene that everyone keeps talking about, which is going to be unique,’ Worthington says, laughing. By Todd Gilchrist Sam Worthington Photo: MTV News While it’s not entirely clear what will be included in the extended version of “Avatar” slated for release on August 27, the film’s star, Sam Worthington, hinted at what could be in the film’s extra eight minutes during a press day for Full Clip Productions , the comic-book imprint Worthington launched with his partners John Schwarz and Michael Schwarz at Radical Studios. “There were several different hunts that the characters go on,” Worthington told MTV. “There’s a sex scene that everyone keeps talking about, which is going to be unique,” he added, laughing. “But there’s a lot of other stuff to do with the Na’vi, and then there’s also a lot of live-action stuff as well.” Since it became the biggest movie of all time, James Cameron has been largely mum on details about a follow-up to his 2009 blockbuster “Avatar,” probably due less to secrecy than the long gaps between his projects. In the meantime, Fox announced earlier this week that it will re-release the film in theaters with eight new minutes of footage. Although the running time of the original cut of the film was well over two hours, Worthington indicated that any excised footage was removed because it was already long enough, and Cameron didn’t want to push the audiences’ patience too far. “That [material] got taken out because of time constraints, and at the time, not knowing if the movie was going to be successful or not.” It remains to be seen how much more of “Avatar” audiences will want to see, at least in theaters. And although Cameron hasn’t volunteered more than vague details about sequels, it will be interesting to see how quickly even its most fervent fans will move on to thoughts of a follow-up. But Worthington indicated that if the director wanted to release more versions that are eight minutes longer than the last one, he could probably do so for years to come without exhausting his yet-unseen supply. “I think he’s got another eight hours of footage, to be honest with you,” Worthington said. “So I’ll be surprised to see what the eight minutes is.” Will you see the extended version of “Avatar”? Sam Worthington Talks ‘Clash Of The Titans’ Sequel, 3-D

‘Today an audience demands a lot more from its 3-D, and they’re going to keep demanding more,’ actor says about ‘Clash’ sequel. By Todd Gilchrist Sam Worthington Photo: MTV News Less than two years ago, Sam Worthington was being touted as Hollywood’s next big star, thanks to high-profile roles in movies like “Terminator: Salvation,” “Clash of the Titans” and, of course, James Cameron’s long-awaited comeback, “Avatar.” Now that those movies have introduced him to audiences, however, it’s time to see if it’s the actor or just his projects that brings people out to the theater. During a recent conversation at Radical Studios, where he also discussed his Full Clip Productions comic book imprint, he offered a hint about what he’d like to take on in the forthcoming sequel to “Clash of the Titans.” “I want the Minotaur maze,” he said when asked which myth or monster he’d most like to see brought to life in the follow-up. “That’s it, simple. I reckon that would be a damn cool sequence.” “Clash of the Titans” was released in March of this year and earned almost $500 million worldwide, due not only to Worthington’s increasingly ubiquitous presence but also the post-production conversion of the film from 2-D to 3-D. It was also that last-minute box-office-driven change that netted the film some harsh reviews, although Worthington said that the sequel would fix that problem by starting production in 3-D rather than implementing it as an afterthought. “When we do ‘Clash 2,’ I think we’re going to shoot it in 3-D ,” Worthington said. “That’s the smartest way to do it, you know? I could see what Warner Brothers was doing by converting it — they went for it and they tried to accommodate an audience. But today an audience demands a lot more from its 3-D, and they’re going to keep demanding more.” Since the overwhelming success of “Avatar,” advanced 3-D technology has enabled filmmakers launching their projects to capitalize creatively on Cameron’s foundation and push their efforts even further. Worthington indicated that neither “Clash 2” nor a potential “Avatar 2” would move forward without a clear and comprehensive strategy for moving the technology and its eventual presentation even further. “With something like ‘Clash 2,’ we’re going to have to try and push the envelope to get the audience back in,” Worthington said. “It’s the same with ‘Avatar 2’ — Jim isn’t going to start on that unless he knows how to push it a bit further. And that’s the whole point: These audiences demand more, and it’s our job as filmmakers or storytellers to keep giving them what they want.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Clash of the Titans.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

‘Avatar’ Headed Back To Theaters With Extra 3-D Footage

August 27 re-release will include eight never-before-seen minutes the film. By Eric Ditzian “Avatar” Photo: 20th Century Fox “Avatar” is still kicking around in a few theaters these days, a full seven months after it arrived at the multiplex and began its march toward $749.6 million in domestic ticket sales. But ever since March, when “Alice in Wonderland” began muscling aside James Cameron’s big blue aliens from a large swath of 3-D-enabled theaters, “Avatar” has gradually disappeared from screens across the country to the point where it was shown in just nine theaters nationwide this past weekend. All that will change on August 27 when “Avatar” ‘s long-awaited re-release arrives. Fox has announced that the film will be screened exclusively in Digital 3-D and IMAX 3-D and that the movie will include eight never-before-seen minutes of Pandoran goodness. Fox cited the post-“Avatar” explosion of 3-D screens as a key reason for the re-release, allowing many folks their first chance to see the film in three dimensions. “We were still playing very strongly in 3-D theaters until a lot of our 3-D theaters went by contractual agreement to ‘Alice in Wonderland,’ ” Cameron told MTV News in March. “So, we know people still want to have that theatrical experience. We actually think that the home experience and the theatrical experience can co-exist.” Another viewing of the original “Avatar” will have to do for now, because there is still no word about when a sequel will shift into production. Last we heard, in April, was that Cameron had plans to take a second “Avatar” into the depths of an alien ocean . “I’m going to be focusing on the ocean on Pandora, which will be equally rich and diverse and crazy and imaginative, but it just won’t be a rain forest,” the director said. SHOCKER: Avatar Returning to Theaters in August with New Footage

OK, maybe not much of a shocker: After Avatar was released on a flimsy and featureless DVD back in April with promises of a more lavish, extended edition this fall, one could only presume that meant a theatrical return to Pandora was in the cards for late summer. And lo and behold, Fox has announced that the highest grossing movie of all-time will add even more money to its coffers when Avatar returns to theaters Aug. 27 with eight minutes of new footage. So which movies opening that weekend will stand in James Cameron’s way and prevent Avatar from reaching No. 1 at the box office for an eighth time since December?
