Four Directors Up For Wicked Movie, But What Would Their Versions Be Like?

As my estimable colleague Kyle Buchanan reported yesterday , producers of the new Wicked movie musical have zeroed in on four possible directors for the film: Star Trek ‘s J.J. Abrams, Walk the Line ‘s James Mangold, Glee ‘s Ryan Murphy and Chicago ‘s Rob Marshall. But fortunately, my sister is dating a guy who is cousins with a girl who went to camp with this one dude who works in Universal’s mailroom, and was able to get me each director’s pitch for their vision of Wicked . Click ahead to experience the wonder.

Jimmy Kimmel Goes DIY After Power Outage

You didn’t see any clips from Jimmy Kimmel Live in Late Night Highlights because a power outage shut down the control room, broadcast transmission center and tape operations area just one hour before the show was scheduled to tape. That was bad news for guest Seth Rogen — who was set to premiere the trailer for The Green Hornet — but good news for Steve Jobs, since Kimmel decided to tape the entire broadcast on his Macbook Pro webcam. And it worked! The fruit of Kimmel’s labor will air tonight at his regularly scheduled time. [ USA Today ]

REVIEW: Robotic Tom Cruise Weighs Down Knight and Day

Tom Cruise is no longer cool, a truth he just can’t face — if he could, he’d be cooler. In the opening moments of Knight and Day, Cruise strides through an airport in a uniform of coolness that may as well have been assembled from a checklist: Distinctive Persol sunglasses, an obviously cashmere V-neck sweater layered over a surely-not-Hanes T-shirt, a Baracuta jacket — I’m only checking off the brand names the same way he and his costume department must have. The ringtone on his character’s phone is “Louie, Louie.” And he actually does some of his own stunts, just to show he can. Cruise really may be the hardest-working man in show business right now, but on him (in direct contrast to James Brown), all that sweat just isn’t cool. Once coolness leaves you, how do you get it back?

Tom Cruise Says ‘Mission: Impossible IV’ Will Be ‘Sick’

He is especially excited to work with director Brad Bird: ‘The guy is just extraordinary.’ By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Will.I.Am and Tom Cruise Photo: MTV News It seems as though Tom Cruise can’t get enough of gadgetry, secret missions and special effects these days. In addition to starring in the upcoming “Knight and Day,” in which he plays a covert agent, the 47-year-old is returning to the role of superspy Ethan Hunt in “Mission: Impossible IV.” MTV News recently spoke with the superstar about the franchise’s fourth installment. Cruise, being the crafty non-spoiler-revealer that he is, didn’t get too into plot details but was happy to talk up new “Mission” director Brad Bird.” “Brad’s great,” Cruise said. “My whole thing with the series is always having a new director come on and put their stamp on ‘Mission: Impossible.’ Brian De Palma was first, then John Woo, J.J. Abrams and now Brad Bird, so it will be Brad Bird’s ‘Mission: Impossible.’ ” Cruise cited the Pixar alum’s complex, action-scene-heavy work on “The Incredibles” as a perfect example of why he’s a good choice to take on “Mission.” “If you really know his work, the guy is just extraordinary,” Cruise said. “You look at ‘The Incredibles,’ his action is incredible, but it’s really like live-action. He’s got an incredible sense of story and wit. J.J. and I are producing it together, and we’re really excited about it. It’s going to be fun.” Regarding his thoughts on the story line — which is, of course, heavily under wraps — Cruise said simply: “It’s sick. It’s fun, really fun.” “Knight and Day,” directed by James Mangold (“Walk the Line,” “3:10 to Yuma”) opens June 25. “Mission: Impossible IV” was recently pushed from its summer 2011 release and is set to open December 16, 2011.
