The Wit & Wisdom of Gossip Girl: True Grit

“What do you say we find that bitch and get ourselves some frontier justice?” Applause! With that single line — courtesy of Blair Waldorf, natch — Gossip Girl washed away the bad taste left by ” Witches of Bushwick “. (Which you might remember as the worst episode of any television show this season.) Too bad it happened in the final moments of “Gaslit,” an episode that was fairly solid, if still coated in some frustration and hair extensions.

When Twitter Marketing Goes Wrong: How Do You Know Hashtag Causes Confusion, Derision

As Twitter has become a legitimate source of news, opinions and even a place for television pitches , movie studios have warmed to its other feature: Promotion. Toy Story 3 was the first film to buy “ad time” in the trending topics section , but many others have partaken in this bit of nuevo-marketing madness since then. The latest is How Do You Know , the James L. Brooks dramedy scheduled for release next month. Too bad that particular promoted hashtag isn’t going as well as Columbia Pictures probably hoped.

Twilight Lover James Franco Incites Mass Hysteria At Actor’s Studio

It appears that in between curating art shows, attending classes, finishing up work on his Three’s Company reboot and a very busy self-pleasure schedule, James Franco was able to sneak away for a taping of Inside the Actor’s Studio — and the audience was out of control. Screaming women, hundreds of rejected fans and one overworked guest who would have likely just slept through the entire presentation were he in the audience.

Researchers find a ‘liberal gene’

Liberals may owe their political outlook partly to their genetic make-up, according to new research from the University of California, San Diego, and Harvard University. Ideology is affected not just by social factors, but also by a dopamine receptor gene called DRD4. The study's authors say this is the first research to identify a specific gene that predisposes people to certain political views. Appearing in the latest edition of The Journal of Politics published by Cambridge University Press, the research focused on 2,000 subjects from The National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health. By matching genetic information with maps of the subjects' social networks, the researchers were able to show that people with a specific variant of the DRD4 gene were more likely to be liberal as adults, but only if they had an active social life in adolescence. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter affecting brain processes that control movement, emotional response, and ability to experience pleasure and pain. Previous research has identified a connection between a variant of this gene and novelty-seeking behavior, and this behavior has previously been associated with personality traits related to political liberalism. Lead researcher James H. Fowler of UC San Diego and his colleagues hypothesized that people with the novelty-seeking gene variant would be more interested in learning about their friends' points of view. As a consequence, people with this genetic predisposition who have a greater-than-average number of friends would be exposed to a wider variety of social norms and lifestyles, which might make them more liberal than average. They reported that “it is the crucial interaction of two factors — the genetic predisposition and the environmental condition of having many friends in adolescence — that is associated with being more liberal.” The research team also showed that this held true independent of ethnicity, culture, sex or age. Fowler concludes that the social and institutional environment cannot entirely explain a person's political attitudes and beliefs and that the role of genes must be taken into account. “These findings suggest that political affiliation is not based solely on the kind of social environment people experience,” said Fowler, professor of political science and medical genetics at UC San Diego. “It is our hope that more scholars will begin to explore the potential interaction of biology and environment,” he said. “The way forward is to look for replication in different populations and age groups.” added by: Vierotchka

Drake Keeps Focus Firmly On Fans At Miami Tour Stop

Cash Money honcho Birdman, Rick Ross join Drizzy at sold-out show, as he shouts out Lil Wayne, honors Aaliyah. By Jayson Rodriguez Drake performs in Miami Monday Photo: Alexander Tamargo/ Getty Images MIAMI — For Drake, even as the venues get bigger, his performances grow more intimate. On the second date of his Light Dreams and Nightmares Tour — the sophomore headlining trek for the Toronto lyricist following his Away From Home outing earlier this year — Drake was ever the gentleman, as he catered to a single invited guest onstage at the James L. Knight Center, despite all of the shrieks from the sold-out crowd. “Stay right there,” he told concertgoer Veronica. “Let me take my time.” With that, Drake casually walked over to the young woman, took her hand and began slow-dancing with her. “Hold on,” he shouted to the audience, pausing only a minute in. “If you have a camera on your phone, stop.” The Thank Me Later star then proceeded to grind even more slowly with the lucky fan as a twin billing of “Un-Thinkable (I’m Ready)” and “A Night Off” boomed throughout the arena. On a night when everyone from LeBron James to Bow Wow was backstage watching the concert, Drake was instead fully focused on his fans. He sang, chatted and basked in their adulation. Kick-starting his set with the “9 a.m. in Dallas” freestyle, Drake was nimble for the first 30 minutes of his set: “The Resistance” quickly transitioned into “Karaoke,” “Successful,” and “Fireworks,” before giving way to Young Jeeyz’s “Lose My Mind” remix. The Birdman (“Money to Blow”) and Rick Ross (“(B.M.F.) Blowin’ Money Fast”) joined Drizzy later on during his performance, as did his Young Money/Cash Money Billionaires fam, Tyga and Mack Maine. But despite the big-name cameos, it was those who weren’t present that took priority on Tuesday night (September 21). At one point, Drake’s DJ, Future, played a stirring Aaliyah tribute. The late singer’s “One in a Million,” “Miss U” and “At Your Best (You Are Love)” played on the venue’s massive speakers and led right into the Aaliyah-sampling “Unforgettable.” Young Money CEO Lil Wayne, though, seemed most unforgettable on the humid fall night. During Drake’s take on his breakout hit “Best I Ever Had,” he urged the audience to shout “Free Weezy” to his “Young Money.” “When I say, ‘free,’ you say, ‘Weezy,’ ” he chanted with the crowd. The psychedelic-inspired lights on the stage shot lasers out into the stands and Drake, decked out in cargo pants and army fatigues, beamed as his boss received ample helpings of approval from the audience. “You can thank me later!” he yelled as fireworks shot out from behind the stage.
