Hayley Williams Calls ‘VH1 Divas’ Performance ‘Humbling’

‘I want to do it again,’ singer tells MTV News of performing for the troops. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Audrey Kim Hayley Williams Photo: Angela Weiss/ Getty Images Hayley Williams proved that she’s one of the new-millennium divas when she belted out Paramore’s “The Only Exception” and a cover of the Foo Fighters’ hit “My Hero” from Camp Arifjan in Kuwait. She and her bandmates entertained the troops there on Friday for “VH1 Divas Salute the Troops,” which aired Sunday night. When MTV News caught up with the rocking frontwoman at KIIS FM’s Jingle Ball 2010 in Los Angeles on Sunday, she admitted that performing for the troops had definitely been on the band’s bucket list. “Well, that was the first time we’d ever experienced anything like that,” she explained. “It was so humbling, and I want to do it again.” The band has a special connection to the troops, since a few of their friends have been deployed. “We’ve been waiting since our band started,” she said. “Especially Jeremy [Davis], our bass player, he’s had friends over there since the band started since he was out of high school. So it’s just really important for us to show them they’re remembered and give them a night just to hang out.” Her “Airplanes” collaborator B.o.B, who was with Williams at Jingle Ball, seemed equally excited by the group’s smashing performance. “Everybody gotta enjoy rock and roll. Shout-outs to Jeremy!” he exclaimed. “What up, man!” The VH1 Divas night also included performances from the Marine Corps air hangar in San Diego by Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj , Sugarland, Keri Hilson and Grace Potter & the Nocturnals. Almost all of the ladies hit the stage for the night’s big opening number, a new take on the classic war tune “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy.” Related Videos Performances At ‘VH1 Divas Salute The Troops’ Related Photos Fashions At ‘VH1 Divas Salute The Troops’ 2010 Jingle Ball Kicks Off In Los Angeles Related Artists Paramore

Rick Ross Praises Keri Hilson’s ‘The Way You Love Me’ Video

Hilson’s video co-star compares the racy clip to Janet Jackson’s ‘Control.’ By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Audrey Kim Keri Hilson Photo: Jason LaVeris/ WireImage Keri Hilson may have stirred things up with her steamy “The Way You Love Me,” but her video co-star, Rick Ross, is giving props to the clip, comparing it to Janet Jackson’s “Control.” “When I got the record, I most definitely knew she was going to another level and I was excited for her,” Ross told MTV News. “I love to see the creative side. She’s a sexy female and I think she showed that. When I think of Janet Jackson when I was coming up and she was doing her Control thing, I loved it. So if that’s the feeling that young people [are getting] or whoever is feeling the music, if that’s the inspiration they get, I think it’s dope.” “The Way You Love Me” premiered online last week and immediately drew attention for its explicit lyrics and the limited amount of clothing — bikini and boots — Hilson wore. Directed by veteran choreographer Laurie Ann Gibson (Diddy’s “Making the Band”), the NSFW video made some fans cry foul over Hilson’s unladylike moves. Others, meanwhile, praised the singer for her forward-thinking boldness. In an interview with gossip hound Perez Hilton, Hilson defended the “The Way You Love Me” clip, calling the video “racy” but in line with the perspective of her forthcoming album. “You know what? If you put it in context with my album, my album is called No Boys Allowed but really it means no bullsh– allowed,” she said. “In this album, I was screaming in a room — just like I was screaming in the song — I was screaming in a room with all my girlfriends, yelling all the sh– we really say.” No Boys Allowed hits stores on December 21. Director Mark Romanek Wants To Direct Lady Gaga Video

‘Never Let Me Go’ director would return to directing videos if Gaga, Radiohead or Tom Waits call. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Lady Gaga Photo: WireImage Since MTV’s Video Music Awards launched in 1984, a select few artists and directors have been honored with the Video Vanguard statuette in recognition of their unique contributions to the ever-changing art form. Mark Romanek is one of them. The director vaulted from working with the likes of Michael Jackson, Madonna and David Bowie to directing Robin Williams in 2002’s “One Hour Photo.” By now, though, Romanek dubs himself “semi-retired” when it comes to directing music videos. That’s not hard to understand, considering how well things have gone for him in Hollywood. His latest feature, “Never Let Me Go,” stars Oscar nominees Keira Knightley and Carey Mulligan. Yet there are a few artists for whom Romanek would happily un-retire. “If Radiohead called or Tom Waits called, I’d go running,” he told MTV News while promoting his new film at the Toronto Film Festival. “Or Gaga, actually.” “Lady Gaga is still doing stuff in the old-school, ’90s way,” he explained. “The ‘Alejandro’ video was really impressive.” That would be Gaga’s homage to Weimar-era Germany , all angular outfits and black-and-white moodiness. “[It is] about a woman’s desire to resurrect a dead love and who cannot face the brutality of her present situation,” the video’s director, Steven Klein , told MTV News in June. “The pain of living without your true love.” Gaga wouldn’t be the first fierce female artist to collaborate with Romanek. He worked alongside Madonna for “Bedtime Stories” and Janet Jackson — and the King of Pop himself — for the seminal “Scream” video in 1995. And though Romanek hasn’t directed a video since Coldplay’s “Speed of Sound” in 2005, he’s certainly open to returning to that world for the “‘Alejandro” singer. “She’s adventurous and visually stunning and takes chances,” he said. “Call me up!” Check out everything we’ve got on “Never Let Me Go.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Katy Perry, Russell Brand Hookup Detailed On ‘VMA’s Revealed’

Stars’ relationship is broken down on MTV special premiering this Saturday at 11 a.m. By Mawuse Ziegbe Katy Perry and Russell Brand Photo: Jeff Vespa/ Getty Images Lots of craziness went down onstage at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards . Rappers like Lil Mama and Kanye West couldn’t resist bum-rushing the stage, Janet Jackson and Madonna contributed to an icon-heavy tribute to the late, great Michael Jackson, and when Lady Gaga wasn’t dashing in and out of elaborate getups, she was writhing onstage drizzled with blood. Unbeknownst to viewers, the backstage madness rivaled the antics that made the big show. Indeed, so much ridiculousness went down that MTV had to dish in “VMA’s Revealed,” an insider’s look at the 2009 festivities that premieres Saturday at 11 a.m. The show also turned out to be the backdrop for one of pop culture’s most high-profile pairings: Katy Perry and Russell Brand . The duo are engaged and are rumored to be hitting the altar later this year. As “Revealed” shows, hitting the VMAs last year became a fortuitous turn for both stars. Both Brand and Perry returned to the VMAs in ’09 after making an impression on viewers — and each other — the year before. They got each other’s attention in passing as rookies in 2008 — she was a first-time performer, he was making his hosting debut — but the next year they realized they had more in common than just sharing the marquee at the VMAs. “I really appreciate his sense of humor. It’s real dark, it’s real wrong and it’s really funny,” Perry says in the episode about her hubby-to-be. Brand, whose grand entrance at the 2009 event was heralded by Perry belting Queen’s “We Will Rock You” accompanied by Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry, admits that he has a way with words when it comes to his pop-star love. “It seems like I can say whatever I want and sort of get away with it,” Brand cheekily observes. To find out how Perry and Brand went from ripping the VMA stage to barreling down the road toward holy matrimony, catch “VMA’s Revealed” Saturday at 11 a.m. The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 12, at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for the winners in general categories, including Best New Artist, from now through September 12. Wissam Al Mana: Dating Janet Jackson!

It’s been a tough year for Janet Jackson, but she’s happier lately. New boyfriend Wissam Al Mana could be a big reason for that. After splitting from longtime boyfriend Jermaine Dupri after a seven-year relationship last summer, Jackson slowly eased into this new romance. The pop star and her man were snapped soaking up the rays in Sardinia, Italy. The 44-year-old Why Did I Get Married Too? star and the 35-year-old businessman from Qatar, who owns homes worldwide, have been quietly enjoying each other’s company, according to reports. Glad she’s moving on and happy! It’s nice to see Michael’s sister happy again. We’re guessing Wissam Al Mana approves of Janet’s new haircut too. In non-romance news, she’s currently writing True You, an exercise and nutrition book. She told Essence she “wanted to write this book because [she] wanted kids to have something to read and know that they are beautiful as they are.” A noble goal!

Mary J. Blige Gives Command Performance At Essence Music Festival

Singer whips crowd into frenzy with classics like ‘Real Love,’ ‘I’m Going Down,’ as Alicia Keys stumbles during near-flawless show. By Shaheem Reid Mary J. Blige performs at the 2010 Essence Music Festival Photo: Taylor Hill/ FilmMagic The 16th annual Essence Music Festival ended in triumph in the early hours of Monday morning, as Earth Wind & Fire closed out the weekend with hits like “September” and “Reasons.” For several days, Essence magazine — celebrating its 40th anniversary this year — and its 20-plus sponsors, including Coca-Cola, Olay and Ford, drove home messages of empowerment, self-esteem and self-awareness. By day, thousands hit New Orleans’ Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, where dozens of companies had set up booths and where acts like Keith Sweat and El DeBarge performed. Those passing through the convention center were also treated to good old celebrity sightings like T.I. and comedian/author Steve Harvey, who led relationship talks. At night, of course, it was all about the music at the Louisiana Superdome. Trey Songz, Estelle, Kid ‘N Play, Doug E. Fresh, LL Cool J, Jill Scott, Joe, Gladys Knight and Keri Hilson were among dozens of performers who opened both on the main stage and the smaller lounge stages. And the headliners were big guns: Janet Jackson kicked things off Friday, Saturday belonged to Alicia Keys and on Sunday night, though Earth Wind & Fire were last on the lineup, it was all about Mary. Mary J. Blige walked away with the performance of the weekend, showing a definitive command of the audience. The queen of hip-hop soul had the New Orleans crowd in a frenzy like a Reggie Bush touchdown, opening up her catalog and doling out cherished ditties such as “Real Love.” When Blige brought out Trey Songz to sing on “We Got Hood Love,” Trigger, of course, got another resounding ovation from the ladies. “Thank you for helping your big sister out,” Mary told Trey. “Sweet Thang” was huge, likely going over heavy because of its sing-along factor, and the audience was so enthralled on “I’m Going Down,” Mary only had to sing one line to tear the roof off the Dome. “Time on my hands, since you been away boy,” the female fans roared, taking over the reins of the record. “Sleep doesn’t come easy,” Mary soon joined in, but the hypnotized spectators kept singing the lyrics. After the record, Blige struck a b-girl pose with her fist balled almost all the way up and her thumb touching her chin. “Let me say this, the Mary J. Blige fans are in the building. I’m having a great time,” Mary said before complimenting the ladies on how good they were looking and how great they sounded. “We’ve reached that point in the night when we have to address some things,” she continued. The Queen then advised the women that some people will try to push them down, and that there’s only one way to handle those people: Tell them you’re trying to get up. “We will have no more drama,” she insisted, following up with “No More Drama.” “I may not be perfect for you, but I’m perfect for me,” Mary told the ladies. She also said she was cool with her imperfections. “It can only make me better to know I am imperfect. … It’s only one you baby. It’s only one you, original, baby.” The tempo soon changed up: “I wanna keep y’all hype right now. Keep y’all right,” she said. T.I. then came onstage for “Good Love” and the fans went crazy. Mary hugged Tip and he saluted the crowd. Blige’s set ended with her smashes “Family Affair” and “Be Without You.” The night before, the highlight on the bill was Alicia Keys, who was introduced by Jada Pinkett Smith. The five-months pregnant singer, who appeared to be standing on six-inch heels, slipped and fell onstage during “Love Is Blind,” but she never missed a beat (her vocals were nearly flawless) or a lyric. She got right back up and went to the piano and played. Keys’ set had several signature moments, including “You Don’t Know My Name” and “Fallin’.” And though she did show her skills on the piano for cuts like “Diary,” A.K. got up and danced on several selections, including “Un-thinkable (I’m Ready).” Related Photos Essence Music Festival Takes Over New Orleans Superdome Related Artists Mary J. Bun B Says ‘I Was Drake’

‘I was in the same predicament in terms of being a new artist,’ he tells Vibe of UGK’s beginnings. By Mawuse Ziegbe Bun B Photo: Frazer Harrison/Getty Images Few can understand the outsize buzz that has accompanied Drake’s hotly anticipated debut, Thank Me Later. However, Houston hip-hop stalwart Bun B, who first started out with Pimp C in the influential duo UGK, said that he relates to the frenzy the Canadian MC has experienced during his rise to stardom. “To be honest, I was Drake,” Bun B told Vibe magazine. The Texas MC said he can relate to artists like Drizzy and Kid Cudi — who both leveraged their undeniable popularity as unsigned artists to score successful mainstream success — because he grappled with the same type of attention and hype from the industry while he was still grinding on the indie circuit. “I was in the same predicament in terms of being a new artist,” he said. “I was involved in a bidding war when we first came out independently. Labels were calling us and inviting us to meetings.” Bun B also told the magazine that his ability to stay relevant and uphold UGK’s legacy after being in the game for years has endeared him to the younger generation of MCs. “We were able to work it out in terms of UGK’s legacy and longevity. And we have inspired a lot of cats. I definitely get calls from up-and-coming artists about how to stick around for a while. I feel like some of these cats could use a little direction.” Bun also defended Drake against detractors who say the Toronto MC’s blending of lyricism and crooning isn’t authentic hip-hop. “I don’t know what they are talking about, personally, because if you are saying that, then that means you are trying to say that people like T.J. Swan, Slick Rick and Biz Markie are not hip-hop. Come on … all of those guys sung on their songs,” Bun said. “Singing in hip-hop is nothing new. We’ve always had people that incorporated singing in their raps. And believe me, if MCs could sing, they wouldn’t get singers to sing on their albums.” What do you think about Bun B’s Drake comparison? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Bun B Drake

Janet Jackson Says ‘I Love My Life’

‘It took me a good minute to get here, it really did,’ the pop star tells Essence in August cover story. By Mawuse Ziegbe Janet Jackson on the August 2010 cover of “Essence” Photo: Essence Communications To her fans, Janet Jackson would appear to have emerged from an especially taxing year. The pop star just marked the one-year anniversary of brother Michael’s death and, last year, ended her relationship with longtime boyfriend Jermaine Dupri . But despite her personal trials, Jackson recently revealed that she’s in a good place in her life. “It took me a good minute to get here, it really did. But I love my life,” Jackson tells Essence in the August issue hitting newsstands July 12. “I only wish I had this confidence when I was younger.” Although Jackson may have lacked confidence in her early years, the hitmaker maintained that she has no qualms about aging; an outlook the Jackson family matriarch, Katherine, instilled in her and her celebrity siblings. “Mother always raised us to believe that age was just a number. All of us — my sisters, my brothers — we’ll just tell you our ages because it’s all about where you are mentally and how you feel about yourself.” Perhaps Jackson’s attitude is also influenced by the new inroads she’s making in her career. The diva has ramped up her acting work in recent months, pulling off an emotional performance in “Why Did I Get Married Too?” Jackson is also scheduled to begin shooting the star-studded “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf,” helmed by Tyler Perry, and with such co-stars as Whoopi Goldberg and Kerry Washington. The megastar also relished her overall independence. “I’m so fortunate. I’m a free agent. I’m not trapped in a contract where I’m unhappy,” Jackson said. “I’m very free, and I love this feeling. I can do whatever I want.” And while Jackson may not be committing to any recording projects just yet, she isn’t shying away from the stage. The singer is slated to perform at the Essence Music Festival in New Orleans this weekend. Jackson will hit the stage alongside several acts, including Alicia Keys, Mary J. Blige and Trey Songz.
