30 Seconds To Mars Thank Fans For Best Live MTV Performance Win

‘Once again, the unstoppable Echelon,’ frontman Jared Leto marvels of band’s dedicated fanbase. By James Montgomery Jared Leto performs “Hurricane” on “Unplugged: Photo: MTV On Tuesday afternoon (December 13), 30 Seconds to Mars took home the inaugural Best Live MTV Performance award for their stirring, scintillating “Unplugged” version of “Hurricane.” Thanks to the votes of their fans, 30STM withstood a late charge from Paramore’s “Brick by Boring Brick” to win the honor. Now, with their trophy firmly in hand, they’re reacting to their triumph — and, as always, sharing their glory with their fervent Echelon fanbase. “This is so incredible. We had an amazing time doing [‘Unplugged’], and thank you to everybody who voted,” frontman Jared Leto said. “Once again, the unstoppable Echelon. We love you guys. “If it wasn’t for the Echelon, we wouldn’t have ever won a single award,” he continued. “I think that’s the blessing of living in this digital age, is that people have a voice, and the Echelon Nation out there has made their voice heard again and again, and we’re so proud that they’re able to gather together, to organize themselves, to fight for a common cause and to make dreams a reality. It’s pretty special.” In a week when there was no shortage of highlights for the band — they were awarded their hard-earned gold record plaques for the This Is War album and entered the “Guinness Book of World Records” with a sold-out, celebratory show in New York — Leto counts their Best Live Performance win as one of the biggest moments. It was almost enough to bring a tear to his steely-blue eyes. “We’re very surprised. … It’s been an insane week already. We got a gold record, we did a Guinness World Record-breaking show,” he laughed. “There’s gonna be a few tears rolling down these hardened, leathery, road-dog cheeks.” All this week, watch “AMTV” on MTV every day at 8 a.m. ET for our Best of 2011 lists. Sleigh Bells’ Reign Of Terror Drops On Valentine’s Day

Band reveals track list and announces Florida tour in support of sophomore album. By James Montgomery Sleigh Bells Photo: Tim Mosenfelder/ Getty Images Having already sufficiently fired up fans with a (thoroughly badass) teaser clip for their upcoming Reign of Terror album, Sleigh Bells are now revealing details about the disc — albeit in a slightly less radical way. According to a press release issued by the band’s publicist, Terror will hit stores February 14 (it’s sure to be a bloody valentine) and features 11 tracks, with appropriately Sleigh Bells-y titles like “True Shred Guitar,” “Demons” and “Road to Hell ” It was produced by guitarist Derek E. Miller, and, as the press release puts it, features “songs that are as crushing and authoritative as their title suggests; they’re effortlessly robust and heavier than any of the band’s previous output … the sonic equivalent of a beautiful shotgun to the head.” Now that’s descriptive! The Bells will also embark on a tour leading up to the release of Terror, making stops all across Miller’s home state of Florida (and nowhere else). The trek kicks off February 2 at the Florida Theatre in Gainesville, and they’ll be taking fellow Floridian Diplo along for the ride, along with Brooklyn’s Liturgy. Reign of Terror is the follow-up to Sleigh Bells’ breakout 2010 album Treats, which they rode to a thunderous performance at the 2011 mtvU Woodie Awards and a collaboration with none other than Beyonc

30 Seconds To Mars Make History At Triumphant Show

Band entered the Guinness Book of World Records on Wednesday night at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom. By James Montgomery Jared Leto of 30 Seconds to Mars Photo: MTV News NEW YORK — For a band that, over the past three years, has been no stranger to adversity — everything from battles with their label to scraps with censors and the occasional stage collapse — 30 Seconds to Mars had probably never had to deal with the kind of trouble that occurred during the encore of their record-setting show Wednesday night in New York. During the crashing crescendo of “Kings and Queens,” a female fan was crushed against a barricade and required immediate medical assistance. “Queens” was the final song of the band’s set, which was preceded by a lengthy presentation from the folks at Guinness World Records, who honored 30STM for Most Shows Played During An Album Cycle (309 was Guinness’ count). Jared Leto invited fans to join them onstage for the finale. Spirits were high inside the Hammerstein Ballroom, and as “Queens” unfolded, they only got higher … until Leto stopped the song and asked for medics to tend to the injured fan. After 20 solemn minutes, EMTs carried her away on a stretcher. “As soon as she got oxygen, she sat up and is doing OK,” 30STM’s management told MTV News after the show. After getting the all-clear, 30 Seconds to Mars undauntedly finished the song and the night ended with the crowd triumphantly chanting its “woah-oh-oh” hook while streamers fell from the ceiling. And not to downplay the severity of the situation, but it helped illustrate everything that made 30 Seconds to Mars’ record-setting run with This Is War so unique. Their ability to overcome obstacles, their willingness to push on, and the otherworldly bond they share with their fans — displayed best when drummer Shannon Leto left the stage to assist the EMTs. The band had already played more than 300 shows, and yet, they still pushed hard on Wednesday, imbuing songs like “Search and Destroy” and “Night of the Hunter” with walloping guitars, anthemic sing-along choruses and washes of spooky synths. Jared sprinted up and down the catwalk stage (not easy to do in a huge black cloak), shined a massive spotlight into the crowd to illuminate fans’ faces, and even performed a few acoustic numbers mid-set. Shannon pounded his kit as sweat flew, and guitarist Tomo Milicevic crunched chords and charmed ethereal soundscapes out of his ax. It could have been show number one, not the final gig of a two-year trek. Of course, 30STM’s fans matched, if not doubled, the band’s enthusiasm. There were signs in the audience touting the Detroit chapter of the Echelon, and at one point, Leto brought a fan onstage who had traveled all the way from Maryland. Every chorus was sung back to the band loudly, each massive chant repeated at top volume, and the opening chords of each new song greeted with squeals of delight. Fans reached skyward as confetti fell, and ooh-ed and aah-ed as lasers shot from the stage. This was definitely a celebration, in just about every conceivable way. Not surprisingly, the band seemed genuinely touched and a tad nostalgic. Jared told fans that the Guinness award was theirs, too, shouting, “I want everyone in here to carry this with them for the rest of their lives,” as he thrust the certificate above his head. As if their record-setting tour didn’t already tip you off to it, the rather frightening delay proved that 30STM are a band seemingly at their best when forced to push on. And on. And on. 30 Seconds To Mars Call Record-Setting Show A ‘Thank You’

Band will enter the Guinness Book of World Records with Wednesday’s show, their 300th in support of This Is War. By James Montgomery Jared Leto of 30 Seconds to Mars Photo: MTV News Like most things involving his band, Jared Leto’s idea to gun for the Guinness Book of World Records was born out of one part determination, one part mania — and a whole lot of sleep deprivation. “It was my idea. I’m the guilty party here,” he laughed. “But people started to ask us, with an incredulous look, What the f— is wrong with you? or they would kind of look at us and be like, ‘You guys are still on tour?’ And it started to seep in that maybe this was a little bit crazy. And then I remember as a kid, I was a big fan of the Guinness Book of World Records … so I just started thinking, Maybe we should take a shot at it. ” So they did, and on Wednesday night (December 7), with a sold-out concert at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom, 30 Seconds to Mars will officially set a Guinness World Record for most shows performed during a single album cycle. It’s the 300th they’ve played in support of their This Is War album, and yes, though they’re very tired, they’re also quite honored to hold the record for the world’s longest-running road dogs. “I used to love the [Guinness] Book, you know, world’s fattest twins or world’s longest fingernails, and so it’s fun to think we’re a part of something that was a part of our childhood,” Leto said. “Plus, it’s Mars history, and something fun for us to do and another chance for us to stop, take note, say thank you to the people that have shared the journey and helped to take our dreams and make them reality.” Though the record-setting show is sold out, fans from around the world can still witness the band make history through VyRT.com , an interactive site that will stream the Hammerstein gig in all its glory. Once the show is completed, 30STM will play a pair of low-key benefit performances at New York’s St. Peter’s church, and then, finally, their schedules will be clear. And no, they’re not quite sure what they’ll do with all that free time. “I think the most time we’ve had off over the past two years has been, maybe, two weeks, and we shot a video during that time,” Leto laughed. “It’s almost like taking away your wife or newborn baby and then saying, ‘OK, go and live another life.’ It’s become such a deep, intrinsic part of our daily grind. … It may not be as easy as we’ve all been assuming, but whatever it is … it will be a step towards a really different future.” A future that includes more Mars music? Well, that remains to be seen. For this week, at least, 30 Seconds to Mars aren’t thinking about what lies ahead; they’re remembering everything that’s led them to this point. After all, it’s been quite a journey, to say the very least. “It’s a new beginning; that’s always really strange, exciting, uncomfortable but important. We all know you close one door and another one can open, but I think the future of 30 Seconds to Mars, as undetermined as things may be right now, it’s still very exciting,” Leto said. “There are a lot of projects under that banner; music is one, and we’re also really grateful, and this week is about sharing that with everyone as we say goodbye and thank everyone for the most amazing journey we’ve ever experienced in our lives. We’ll always look back at this time as one of the most important and impactful periods of our creative lives, ever.” Congratulate 30 Seconds to Mars on their record in the comments below! 30 Seconds To Mars Go For Guinness World Record

December 7 show at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom would set record for Most Shows Performed During a Single Album Cycle. By James Montgomery Shannon Leto, Jared Leto, and Tomo Milicevic of 30 Seconds to Mars Photo: Taylor Hill/ FilmMagic 30 Seconds to Mars released This Is War in December 2009 and have spent basically every waking moment since on the road promoting it (when they weren’t making 15-minute, NFSW mini-movies , of course). To date, they’ve played shows on six continents, and now, all that touring will earn them a place in the “Guinness Book of World Records.” On December 7, 30STM will perform their 300th — and final — show in support of War, at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom. And when that gig is completed, they’ll officially set the record for Most Shows Performed During a Single Album Cycle. That’s according to a press release issued Monday (October 17) by the band’s spokesperson, which touts the show as “a special Tribus Centum Numerarae concert” and promises that “the band is also planning a special week of unique shows celebrating this milestone, beginning on December 5.” “We have been on the road for an incredible and insane two years and thought what better way to celebrate the end of this phenomenal journey than with a week of special shows in New York City,” 30STM frontman Jared Leto said in a statement. “We thought documenting this for posterity with the ‘Guinness Book of World Records’ would be fun especially as we aren’t any good at growing our fingernails very long or cultivating the world’s largest squash.” Don’t downplay a giant squash, dude. Tickets for the record-setting show are now available in an exclusive fan-club pre-sale through the band’s website , with tickets being made available to the general public beginning Saturday at 10 a.m. ET. Lady Gaga And Her #MeatDress: 2010 VMA Twitter Winners

We look back at the 2.3 million Bieber, Jared Leto and garbage-bag-dress tweets sent during last year’s show. By Kara Klenk Lady Gaga at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards Photo: Steve Granitz/WireImage.com With outrageous moments, surprise performances and meat-clad pop stars, the Video Music Awards undoubtedly leave many Twitterers nursing thumb cramps on Monday morning. As the tweeting community continues to grow exponentially each year, the VMAs drive even more activity and trends. Last year, the second in which we used the VMA Twitter Tracker, there were approximately 2.3 million VMA-related tweets sent during the East and West Coast broadcasts. Looking back at what people were the big trends were that night provides a pretty accurate picture of the big show’s onstage spectacles. On average, Lady Gaga was the subject of 9,200 tweets per minute (which, for Gaga, was probably a barely noticeable bump). Her meat-purse holder, Cher, was also popular that night as the subject of 7,100 tweets per minute. She was followed by Eminem, with 5,000 tweets per minute, and Rihanna, who had 4,700 tweets per minute. Here are a few other interesting stats from 2010 VMAs trending topics. Maybe they’ll give us hints about what people will be talking about during this Sunday’s show. 30 : Number of VMA-related topics trended from 8-11 p.m. ET. This doesn’t even include topics that blew up after the show like meat dress, BornThisWay, and Lady Gaga Wins. 21 : Number of these 30 topics that trended for an average of just 20 minutes (including white carpet, Drizzy Drake, #ifbiebermetgaga), a testament to the short attention span window on Twitter. 5 : Number of topics that were a celebrity’s misspelled name (Nicki Manaj, Chelsey Handler, Justin Beibers). Poor Nicki also trended as Niki Minaj, never as her correct name. 7 : Number of trends regarding Lady Gaga, the most of any celeb. Bieber came in second as the subject of five. 5 : Number of topics involving celeb fashion, including Varsity Jacket, Garbage Bag Dress, Lady Gaga’s Shoes. 120 : Number of minutes Jared Leto trended, the longest of any trend that evening. Go, Echelon! The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. Jared Leto Warns Fans Of Stage Collapse At Belgium’s Pukkelpop Fest

A storm knocks down several stages at festival, killing three and injuring 71. By James Dinh Jared Leto Photo: Leonard Adam/ WireImage With the tragic stage collapse at Sugarland’s Indiana State Fair show still fresh in the minds of concertgoers, Jared Leto sent precaution to 30 Seconds to Mars’ fans at Belgium’s Pukkelpop festival on Thursday night (August 18) as a storm passed through, knocking down several stages and causing at least three deaths and 71 injuries. “CRAZY STORM AT PUKKELPOP IN BELGIUM – NOT SURE WE WILL BE ABLE TO GO ON STAGE – STAYED TUNED. SAFETY FIRST,” Leto tweeted prior to his band’s set. Things took a turn for the worse a mere half-hour later, when Leto tweeted , “FOUR STAGES DOWN – STILL RAINING + THUNDER IF YOU ARE HERE PLEASE BE SAFE.” According to reports, Pukkelpop was hit with strong winds and rainfall at around 6:15 p.m. local time, which caused several structures and stages to collapse. Nearby trees were also uprooted, causing even more damage to the fairgrounds and hazard to the estimated 60,000 in attendance. Chokri Mahassine, the organizer of the three-day festival, told The Associated Press, “We have for now put the festival on hold until we understand the situation completely.” Shortly after the collapse, the 30 Seconds to Mars frontman took to his website to send sympathy to those affected by the events. “Our deepest thoughts and sympathies to the families and friends of those who lost their lives today at the show in Belgium. We are absolutely devastated that this celebration ended in tragedy,” Leto wrote. “To those that were injured we are sending thoughts and prayers. Obviously under these horrible and dangerous circumstances, and out of respect for those who have passed, Thirty Seconds to Mars will not be playing. We love you all and hope tomorrow brings a better day.” Share your condolences in the comments below. Related Artists 30 Seconds To Mars
