30 Seconds To Mars Plot ‘Crazy’ Entrance For 2010 VMAs

Jared Leto likens it to ‘open-heart surgery on the dance floor.’ By James Montgomery 30 Seconds To Mars Photo: MTV News You would probably think — based on, well, practically everything — that Jared Leto is not the kind of guy who likes to play things close to the vest (or studded leather jacket, or whatever). And in most instances, you’d be right. But not when it comes to 30 Seconds To Mars’ arrival at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards . Because while he’s certainly got big plans, he’s not about to reveal them just yet. “We have an entrance plan that has never, ever been done before in the history of the VMAs,” Leto told MTV News on Tuesday. “Basically, it’s like ‘Seinfeld’ but not … it’s like open-heart surgery on the dance floor, it’s like taking your eyeballs out and putting them in the opposite sockets. It’s going to be crazy.” That sounds, uh, interesting. And while we suspect he’s kidding, Leto and his 30 Seconds to Mars mates definitely have something in the works for the big show, which airs Sunday, September 12, live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. After all, 30 Seconds to Mars are nominated for four awards, including Best Rock Video and Video of the Year for their epic “Kings and Queens” clip . And so, somewhat appropriately, their grand entrance will probably be inspired by that video. Though, again, Leto isn’t about to give away any secrets. “It could, quite possibly, pay homage to the ‘Kings and Queens’ video,” he said. “We may be arriving in a way that encourages treating your planet in a better way. … We will hopefully be arriving in style, and [be doing] something different and fun and something I believe is appropriate.” So, bikes? Maybe. Though nothing is set in stone just yet … there are still backroom deals to be made and palms to be greased. Both of which, as luck would have it, are 30STM specialties. “We are plotting and planning the arrival of 30 Seconds to Mars, and hopefully, we will be appearing in a very special way, but we haven’t got the final approval [yet],” Leto smiled. “We only do behind-the-scenes campaigning. We’re into bribery and things like that.” The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 12, at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for the winners in general categories, including Best New Artist, from now through September 12. 30 Seconds To Mars Recount Harrowing Bomb Scare

‘It’s kind of bizarre and easy to find some humor in the situation now, but it was very serious,’ Jared Leto tells MTV News. By Kyle Anderson 30 Seconds To Mars’ Jared Leto Photo: MTV News A few weeks ago, 30 Seconds To Mars frontman Jared Leto hosted a screening of “Artifact,” the documentary about the band and the creation of their latest album, This Is War. But the gathering of hundreds of fans was broken up by a bomb scare , which Leto is still trying to process. “It’s kind of bizarre and easy to find some humor in the situation now, but it was very serious,” Leto told MTV News last week. “Last I heard, the LAPD was investigating and he was in jail, though I don’t know if he’s still there.” The incident in question began when the unidentified man interrupted the screening. After Leto managed to shuffle him out the door, the man’s car — which was parked outside in the middle of the street and playing extremely loud music — became a nuisance and the police were called. The resulting scene quickly unraveled. “It was such a surreal setting,” Leto said. “They shut down five blocks in every direction. They shut down the street. People weren’t allowed to walk anywhere. People were asked to leave their stores.” Ironically, the man was finally apprehended later while Leto was talking to the LAPD. “I was being interviewed by the police, and I see the guy walk right back up to me,” he said. “They were looking for him, and I said, ‘Well, that’s the guy right there.’ He walked up to the police and said something to me, and they put him in handcuffs and asked him what was in the package. That’s when he talked about explosives. It was surreal.” Despite the disruptions, the band finished the screening of the hotly anticipated film “Artifact,” which Leto said should be available for public consumption later this year. The documentary, which follows 30 Seconds to Mars during the recording of This Is War, will provide a revealing look at the band and its inner workings. “We have a lot of material from over two years of shooting. It’s something like 3,500 hours,” Leto said. The frontman said the most revealing thing in the film might involve Leto’s sense of fashion. “I think half the film I’m in my pajamas, because I didn’t leave the house very often while we were recording,” he said. “There were days we felt like we were all in the hospital together, on some sort of rehab trip.” Related Artists 30 Seconds To Mars

30 Seconds To Mars Talk Upcoming North American Tour

Next leg of Into the Wild Tour begins in Las Vegas on April 9. By Kyle Anderson Jared Leto and Tomislav Milicevic of 30 Seconds to Mars Photo: MTV News 30 Seconds to Mars have been a band for over 10 years, but they’re just coming into their own as an elite touring force now. On February 19, they’ll head to the U.K. to begin the first leg of their Into the Wild Tour, which will have them touring all over Europe. But American fans need not worry, as lead singer Jared Leto told MTV News that they’ll be back in North America on April 9 for a show in Las Vegas. “From Elvis to Cirque du Soleil to 30 Seconds to Mars — you’ve got your pick,” Leto says dryly of the band’s visit to the Entertainment Capital of the World. Despite their decade-long existence, the thrill of touring hasn’t waned for Leto and his cohorts. “We did a lot of shows to 20 people in a bar who were more interested in cheap drinks than they were the band,” Leto says. “We’re really excited and we’re grateful for it, and we don’t take it for granted at all.” “I remember just a few years ago there was a show where we sold 800 tickets and we couldn’t believe it,” Leto adds. “The very first show on this tour is 8,000 people, and the next day there’s gonna be 11,000 people there. I’m going to have to get my voice in shape!” “We’re about to go on our first arena tour — we’re crazy excited,” says guitarist Tomislav Milicevic. The inspiration for the name of the tour comes from a lyric from “The Mission,” a song that Leto wrote back in 1999 that appeared on the group’s self-titled debut. “When you go out on the road, it is kind of a venture into the wild. You’re with this group of pirates, from your crew to your bandmates, and you share this insane journey around the world. It’s quite unlike anything else.” “Plus, acceptable levels of hygiene go down when you’re on tour,” Milicevic quipped. Related Artists 30 Seconds To Mars
