A Tribute To the People Who Write Excruciatingly Detailed Wikipedia Plot Summaries For Movies That Suck

There is a group of individuals whom Movieline would like to salute: The passionate, faceless people who lovingly record, in surprising detail and with confounding care, the full plot summaries for horrible movies on Wikipedia. Wikipedia movie plot historians, your day has come. I first recognized this phenomenon last month. While researching several pivotal roles in Kirsten Dunst’s career for the actresses’s 9 Milestones in the Evolution of… feature, I noticed (and greatly appreciated) that an Internet user had heroically outlined the entire plot of her long-forgotten and laughable 1998 television movie Fifteen and Pregnant . The plot summary is delivered in four straightforward paragraphs which remarkably do not acknowledge the ridiculousness of this poorly-scripted and self-righteous project. Here is just a taste… “The film opens with fourteen year old Tina having sex with Ray. A few days later Tina is sitting in the car with her mother and Tina’s mother asks her if she knows anyone who is sexually active at her age, or if she has ever been sexually active, and Tina nods her head yes, although her mother doesn’t know what she is admitting.” Granted, the person who was so moved by the melodramatic play-by-play of Fifteen and Pregnant that he/she rushed to his/her computer and tapped out a painfully accurate recap, is by no means a scholar. But skill or grasp of the English language is not the point here: The dedication is. For example, do you know how much you’d have to pay me to watch Troll 2 again and compose an entire 11 paragraph summary without a single critical inflection? (The most derogatory statement about the film in its Wikipedia entry is that it is “widely considered to be of poor quality.”) Do you know how severely you would need to threaten me before I typed out 1,000 words on the detestable Rob Reiner film North ? Do you know how many Target gift cards you would have to hire Woody Harrelson to strew onto a hotel bed Indecent Proposal -style before I agreed to not only view New Year’s Eve but to pen an earnest six-paragraph summary of this particular Garry Marshall’s holiday disaster-piece ? (The answers to these three questions are “a ton,” “very severely,” and “like, $10,000 worth.”) The heroic Wikipedia users who composed the above plot summaries may not have saved any lives. But they did save brain cells — brain cells that could have met a similar fate as the millions of those left to be swept up along with the neglected candy and self-respect on the floor of every Jack and Jill -screening multiplex auditorium in America last month. Because hopefully, some smart moviegoers elected to just read the Wikipedia plot summary of the film so that they could appropriately rag on it at the water cooler without paying for a partial Adam Sandler-performed lobotomy. Or maybe a few intelligent viewers decided against seeing the film after its detailed Wiki page informed them that the “comedy” would feature “cameos” from Bruce Jenner, Regis Philbin and Drew Carey. Or maybe that is all just wishful thinking and Wikipedia plot summary movie-going prevention is just a hope for the future. Either way, I am thankful for the bold Wiki user who dared to recount every minor plot twist in Showgirls so that I never have to re-watch the film to rediscover how much Cristal and Zach paid Nomi for a lap dance at the Cheetah ($500). So please, in honor of these Wikipedia movie plot historians, take a moment and scan through a few detailed recaps of your least favorite movies of all time. Recognize the effort, thank the faceless writers in whichever way you deem fit and maybe consider tapping out a few future plot summaries of your own. For without these loving recaps, human beings might actually have to sit through a screening of Gigli to fully recognize the film’s atrociousness. Follow Julie Miller on Twitter . Marc Anthony to Fight for Custody, Make J. Lo "Suffer"

The divorce between Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony may have started off amicably enough… but the former’s relationship with backup dancer Casper Smart has thrown a contentious wrench into the couple’s split. Following reports that Anthony was throwing tantrums over J. Lo moving on so quickly, the latest issue of Us Weekly states that Anthony is set to cause major problems between the pair. After initially ceding primary custody to the American Idol judge, Anthony is now “going back on his word and saying his wants joint custody,” an insider tells the tabloid . Why would Anthony use the former couple’s twins in such a manner? The answer is simple, says this source: “He wants to make Jennifer suffer because she’s having fun with someone new, and he knows this will hurt her on the deepest level.” Overall, the divorce is “getting vicious,” the magazine reports.

Rebecca Black Explodes, Charlie Sheen Implodes: That Happened This Year?

From Jennifer Lopez joining ‘American Idol’ to Charlie Sheen’s meltdown, some of the year’s biggest news stories seem like distant memories. By John Mitchell Rebecca Black in her “Friday” video Photo: Ark Music Factory Every major entertainment news story has a life cycle. First it breaks and is inescapable as every detail of the event takes on an aura of significance (think the carat count on Britney Spears’ engagement ring ). With interest still high but new information scarce, the analysis begins. We reporters look to experts to see what it all means and to fans to find out what they think and how they feel about what’s gone down. There are follow-ups and roundups as bright and shiny fresh news bits come together with what we already know to tell the whole story. Then the whole thing kind of dies as interest wanes and everybody moves on to the next big thing. Most major stories end up feeling like little time capsules and we never forget when they happened. Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep” is as tied to 2011 as Beyonc

Machine Gun Kelly ‘Grateful’ To Fans For Hottest Breakthrough Win

On ‘RapFix Live,’ MGK presents his die-hard supporters with a hand-carved award for all their votes. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Machine Gun Kelly Photo: MTV News Machine Gun Kelly is having a Rocky Balboa moment. After he was named MTV News’ Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2011 on Wednesday’s “RapFix Live,” the Cleveland rapper hopped on Skype to check in with Sway and thank his fans for all their support. He even presented them with an award of their own. “I can’t explain how grateful I am for all those kids who sat there and got in voting circles and sat there for hours and hours and did votes upon votes,” MGK said of his fans, who voted for him in the week-long poll that started December 7. “I know that we have probably the least amount of fans, but like I told my fans: Heart is always gonna prevail over connections and who these people know and who tweets what.” It was then that MGK held up a red piece of wood with the words: “Congratulations to the Breakthrough Fans of 2011, EST” carved into it. “I stayed up last night,” the Bad Boy rapper said. “I couldn’t go get a plaque made, so I went and got a piece of wood and carved in it, and so we want to present this to the fans.” The competition was tough, and ever since the fan-driven Hottest Breakthrough poll opened on the RapFix blog last week, Kells was jockeying for the #1 position, fighting off Lil Twist and Mac Miller. A$AP Rocky, Future, French Montana, Freddie Gibbs, Kendrick Lamar, Meek Mill and Roscoe Dash were also in contention, but in the end, it was MGK who held the crown after hundreds of thousands of votes were tallied. When all the math was complete, MGK finished with 44 percent of the vote. Miller, whose Blue Slide Park debuted at #1 last month, was an early favorite. Twist, who finished in the #2 spot with 39 percent of the vote, proved to be MGK’s most formidable competition, thanks to his die-hard fans, Young Money team and best friend Justin Bieber, who all tweeted in support. Next up, Kells would like to release his debut album, which he revealed he has already finished recording. But before he signed off, he couldn’t help but thank his fans once again. “To the fans, this is a huge thing for the world,” Machine Gun Kelly said, feeling inspired by the movie “Rocky,” which he said he had been watching earlier in the day. “We just knocked out Apollo Creed, and I just want to thank all my fans for being ringside with me.” All this week, watch “AMTV” on MTV every day at 8 a.m. ET for our Best of 2011 lists. Then, come to MTVNews.com at 5 p.m. as we reveal our top picks of the year! Related Videos RapFix Live: ‘Hottest Breakthough MCs’ Edition
