Seen On The Scene: Black Hollyweird Comes Out To Honor Debra Martin Chase

It’s great to see the big names in Black Hollywood pulling together to support each other. The Blackhouse Foundation Honors Debra Martin Chase On Monday, June 18th, the Blackhouse Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to expanding opportunities for Black filmmakers, hosted an intimate dinner in honor of Debra Martin Chase at CAA. This dinner, which also featured a special surprise performance by Goapele, celebrated the 2012 LA Film Festival and kicked off the “Blackhouse Celebrates” event series. Everyone looks great (we’re just gonna ignore Hill Harper’s facial hair — he must be playing Cornel West in something or something). This definitely sounds like a great event and a great cause. Keep up the good work Debra! Check out more photos below:

Weekend Receipts: Hunger Games Slays Lukewarm Stooges and Co.

This is getting a little ridiculous: The Hunger Games claimed its fourth straight weekend box-office win on Sunday, mopping the floor with weak-sauce competition including The Three Stooges , Cabin in the Woods , and a brutally performing Lockout . Your Weekend Receipts are here. 1. The Hunger Games Gross: $21,500,000 ($337,070,000) Screens: 3,916 (PSA $5,490) Weeks: 4 (Change: -35.1%) Where will it end? One can only presume that Zac Efron and Nicholas Sparks will tag team to knock this off the top next week with The Lucky One , but I’m more preoccupied with The Hunger Games ‘ foreign tally — $194 million and counting, with late European markets (including Spain and Italy) still to come. Is a $650 million global take doable? $700 million? And can you believe how much money Gary Ross walked away from for the sequels? Oy. 2. The Three Stooges Gross: $17,100,000 (new) Screens: 3,545 (PSA $4,918) Weeks: 1 Speaking of “oy”… Not terrible, I guess, for recycled slapstick from the mid-20th century, though it clearly needed more nun-kini . 3. The Cabin in the Woods Gross: $14,850,000 (new) Screens: 2,811 (PSA: $5,283) Weeks: 1 I can only imagine the surprise of Lionsgate accountants this morning as they pore over their box-office spreadsheets, scroll down from the Hunger Games numbers, and quizzically exchange glances about this strange other movie their studio opened last Friday. I think is what they call “gravy” in Hollywood. 4. Titanic 3D Gross: $11,625,000 ($44,419,000) Screens: 2,697 (PSA: $4,310) Weeks: 2 (Change: -32.7%) No, wait — this is what they call gravy. Relatively slight drop, though, for a 3-D film, which could mean a surprising showing next week against top-five hopeful Chimpanzee . Also: I can’t believe I just wrote that sentence. 5. American Reunion Gross: $10,700,000 ($39,900,000) Screens: 3,203 (PSA $3,341) Weeks: 2 (Change: -50.3) Whatever. 9. Lockout Gross: $6,250,000 (new) Screens: 2,308 (PSA $2,708) Weeks: 1 And goodbye, Guy Pearce, action hero . We hardly knew ye. [Figures via Box Office Mojo ] Follow S.T. VanAirsdale on Twitter . ‘Cabin In The Woods’: The Reviews Are In!

Critics are mostly positive about Joss Whedon’s horror-movie send-up. By Kevin P. Sullivan Fran Kranz, Chris Hemsworth and Anna Hutchison in “Cabin in the Woods” Photo: Lionsgate The critics have (kinda) spoken about the latest from Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard, “The Cabin in the Woods.” The mysteries of “Cabin” have been some of the most closely guarded secrets at the movies in recent years. If you’re seeking out reviews of the buzzed-about horror flick, do so with caution. Not everyone is equally keen to keep their reviews spoiler-free. The critics are largely positive, overall. There is some concern that the film, a send-up of the horror genre, isn’t as scary as the movies it’s commenting on. Here is our spoiler-free roundup of reviews of “The Cabin in the Woods.” The Spoilers “Stop reading this review right now. Go see ‘The Cabin in the Woods,’ then come back and we can have a conversation about it. Just trust me on this. The less you know going into it, the better.” — Christy Lemire, The Associated Press The Story “Five college friends pile into a camper for a frolicsome vacation. There’s the alpha male hunk (Chris Hemsworth), his va-voom girlfriend (Anna Hutchison), the stoner and Shaggy of the group (Fran Kranz), the shy but charismatic brain (Jesse Williams) and the sympathetic, smart and not incidentally pretty hot protagonist (Kristen Connolly). Early on, we’re shown that they’re being watched very closely, and perhaps controlled, by a massive control room. Their primary handlers are played by Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford.” — Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune The Whedon-verse “Some dialogue will remind audiences of the sassy sarcasm tossed off in the face of monstrous creatures in Whedon’s cult TV series ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer,’ episodes of which Goddard also co-wrote.” — Claudia Puig, USA Today The Scares “With compulsive effort that is meant to feel like giddy abandon, they have tried to make a horror movie that is frightening, original and knowing, all at the same time. Two out of three is not bad, given the difficulty of the task. A wink can sometimes undermine a scare. Novelty and genre traditionalism often fight to a draw. Too much overt cleverness has a way of spoiling dumb, reliable thrills.” — A.O. Scott, New York Times The Final Word “If ‘Scream’ was a meta-hack-’em-up, ‘Cabin’ takes five giant steps back to reveal a wider canvas, gleefully jumbling together every kind of modern horror picture, paranoid-conspiracy thrillers, ‘Matrix’-style sci-fi, and a dollop of H. P. Lovecraft. Is it scary? Not especially. But there are enough gory surprises around every bend to keep you laughing/screaming/cringing.” — David Edelstein, New York Check out everything we’ve got on “The Cabin in the Woods.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . At SXSW, Matthew McConaughey Says It’s OK To Laugh At ‘Killer Joe’

‘It’s a bit of a hyperreality … very violent, at the same time, it’s very funny,’ star tells MTV News at South by Southwest film festival. By Kara Warner Despite the fact Matthew McConaughey is a homegrown Texan, this is the first year he’s attending Austin’s annual South by Southwest film festival in support of a film of his that was selected. And McConaughey isn’t just in town for one premiere — he’s here for two: “Killer Joe” and “Bernie.” In “Joe,” the “Lincoln Lawyer” star plays a contract killer hired by a young man (Emile Hirsch) who’s trying to get rid of his mom for stealing his drugs. Sound outrageous? It is. So much so that the castmembers revealed that while watching some of the scenes, they didn’t know if they should laugh or be offended. “It’s a comedy, but everyone played it straight,” McConaughey told MTV News at the SXSW premiere Saturday night. “It wasn’t a comedy where you played the joke. The situations are absurd. It’s a bit of a hyperreality like in some good Tarantino films — very violent, at the same time, it’s very funny.” Co-star Gina Gershon added, “The wonderful thing about it is that you could be watching a scene and … one person watching is totally horrified and the other is laughing their head off. Sometimes, it’s like, ‘This is kind of sexy.’ ‘No, it’s horrible!’ ‘No, it’s funny.’ It really screws with your emotions a lot.” Hirsch admitted that the fact that his character hires a hitman to kill his mom is extreme, but she asked for it when she stole his drugs. “It’s kind of crazy. I think the MTV crowd — whoever those Music Television-loving people are out there — could like it,” he said. “I don’t know. I’m not going to tell them they will.” The “Into the Wild” star said he liked the insanity of the story — and that he got to act with a limp. “It was good. [Director William] Friedkin kept coming up to me and was like, ‘Don’t forget the pain. Let me see that limp, let me see that leg.’ ” McConaughey said he expects a lot of delayed laughter from audiences because people can’t decide whether they should find the situations funny: “It’s the kind of late laugh that you go, ‘I’m not supposed to be laughing, but I just found myself laughing, and is it OK for me to laugh at that ’cause I just did?’ I like it.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . ‘Cabin In The Woods’ Cast Talks ‘Thrilling’ Death Scenes

At South by Southwest film festival, star Jesse Williams says Joss Whedon’s horror flick is ‘both awesome and terrifying at the same time.’ By Kara Warner What’s a horror movie without a few sensational death scenes? One that could be described as less-than-satisfactory by the gung ho gore fans out there. And although there is a lot of secrecy surrounding the action in “The Cabin in the Woods,” it is not spoiling anything to say that there might be a gory death or two. When MTV News caught up with castmembers Anna Hutchison, Jesse Williams and Kristen Connolly at the film’s South by Southwest film festival press day, we asked them to describe how the deaths in the Joss Whedon-penned, Drew Goddard-directed film are different from what we’ve seen onscreen before. “I think people get connected to the characters, but somehow I find the murders in this film are more thrilling,” Williams said. “You know the train wreck effect where you want to look away — something that is both awesome and terrifying at the same time? “Like, one time I almost touched a shark in the open ocean. I didn’t realize it was a shark. ‘I’m excited, but I’m going to die.’ So, those kind of things happening at once. Anna knows what I’m talking about.” “Well, lose a hand. I don’t know about die,” Hutchison offered. “It’s a bit dramatic.” “She’s from New Zealand where it’s like playing in the yard for them: ‘Go play with the sharks!’ ” he teased. “I think it’s both those things happening at once where you’re uniquely thrilled, but you’re going to miss that character — but that’s not saying that any of us die or don’t die in the end.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
