Help Caption the First Images of Jim Carrey in Mr. Popper’s Penguins

Movieline didn’t flag him among the 2011 comeback candidates , but might this be the year everyone remembers Jim Carrey? On the heels of hosting the highest rated Saturday Night Live of the season , the first official images of Carrey in next summer’s Mr. Popper’s Penguins have arrived, and they look quite promising. Or at least promising if you fondly recall Carrey’s animal loving turn as Ace Ventura — and, really, who doesn’t? Click ahead for the pics of Carrey breaking one of W.C. Fields’ most basic rules, and feel free to caption away in the comments section.

REVIEW: Ewan McGregor and Jim Carrey Are Prisoners of Love in I Love You Phillip Morris

There’s plenty of sweetness at the core of Glenn Ficarra and John Requa’s bold, bleak little comedy I Love You Phillip Morris, in which Jim Carrey plays a gay con man who meets and falls in love with a sweet Southern boy played by Ewan McGregor — while the two are in prison, no less. Ficarra and Requa — the writers of Bad Santa , making their directorial debut — set an ambitious mark for themselves and don’t quite hit it. This is a love story in which one of the partners repeatedly does some really bad stuff, and while it’s easy enough to admire him for his ability to get away with it all, it’s harder to square the way he so cheerfully dupes innocent people, including his beloved. Posing as a lawyer when you’ve never even been to college? Bilking the company you work for (and whose employ you entered under false pretenses) out of millions? Whatever happened to just sending flowers?

Bah, Humbug: 5 Better Scrooges Than Jim Carrey — and 5 Worse Ones

For those of us who thought Robert Zemeckis’ Beowulf was a vast improvement over The Polar Express , A Christmas Carol (out this week from Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment) wound up being a disappointing return to the rubbery, dead-eyed characters of that earlier Christmas flick. But at least give Jim Carrey points for trying — he provides the license-to-ham role of Ebenezer Scrooge with his full arsenal of grimaces and twitches and, if nothing else, totally pours himself into the character. (He’s a little less successful playing all the ghosts, but none of his doubling comes close to the creepiness of seeing Gary Oldman play Bob Cratchit and Tiny Tim.)

On DVD: The Marmaduke Principle, or: There Is No Such Thing As An Animated Star

I understand that Marmaduke , new to DVD this week, “stars” Owen Wilson “as” an animated Great Dane. Shockingly, it’s not the money and marketing thrust behind a movie based on a one-panel comic strip about a dog that most disgusts me, nor is it the movie itself, which is merely unwatchable . It’s this business about celebrities “starring” in movies in which they do not, in fact, appear.

NSFW: Jim Carrey’s Gay Sex Scene From I Love You Phillip Morris

Will general audiences in the United States ever see I Love You Phillip Morris , the Jim Carrey/Ewan McGregor gay farce that played at Sundance in 2009? It’s looking less and less likely, since despite being released all over the world by now, the film still can’t land a U.S. distributor that can actually pay its guarantee . Potentially part of the holdup? This super graphic gay sex scene.

I Love You Phillip Morris’ New Likely Release Date: Never

I remember January 15, 2009, like it was yesterday — the first day of the Sundance Film Festival, where filmmakers Glenn Ficarra and John Requa had just checked in at fest headquarters and seated themselves in the industry lounge for a morning snack. They had brought with them their directorial debut and arguably Sundance’s biggest bidding-war candidate, I Love You Phillip Morris . I watched them field one phone call, then another, then depart almost as quickly as they arrived, thinking the filmmakers were at the hectic beginning of everyone’s festival dream. Instead, as a new court ruling suggests, it was the first day of their worst nightmare.

Chances are that you were not among the lucky thousands who attended Conan O’B rien’s “Legally Prohibited from Being Funny on Television” show at the Gibson Amphitheater in LA this past Saturday.
