If you couldn’t tell from the trailer for Friends with Benefits — which features star Justin Timberlake singing not one, but two cheesy one-hit wonder classics (“Jump” by Kris Kross and “Closing Time” by Semisonic), the former N’S ync’er loves toying with his musical past. Couple that with the fact that the last time Timberlake appeared with Jimmy Fallon on Late Night , the pair performed “The History of Rap,” and it shouldn’t be a surprise that a sequel was in the offing. No “Jump,” unfortunately, but there was Biz Markie. Click through to watch the video everyone will send you before lunch.
Duo hit on songs by Vanilla Ice, Cypress Hill and 50 Cent on ‘Late Night With Jimmy Fallon’ on Tuesday. By Gil Kaufman Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake Photo: NBC We already know Justin Timberlake can do funny on “Saturday Night Live,” and serious in “The Social Network.” He can obviously sing (though he doesn’t seem that interested in doing it lately), and now he’s top-lining his first motion picture with “Friends With Benefits.” But the dude can also rap, which he proved again on Tuesday night when he visited old pal Jimmy Fallon on “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon” and dropped a blazing sequel to their first road trip through hip-hop with an equally head-spinning “History of Rap 2.” Though he made it seem like he was once again reluctant to pick up the mic, it took very little convincing to get Timberlake to lace up. “No, no, no stop. It’s not gonna happen, we can’t do it again, we can’t top …” Timberlake told the cheering crowd before locking eyes with Fallon and grabbing a conveniently hidden microphone from behind his chair and strutting to the stage. Over the next five minutes, he and Fallon ripped through two dozen classics, opening with Kurtis Blow’s legendary “The Breaks,” before segueing into another early rap totem, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five’s “The Message,” complete with both men busting out their best robot dance moves. It’s easy to sound great when you’ve got the Roots backing you up, and the band was more than up to the task, hitting the right bass-heavy tone for N.W.A.’s “Express Yourself,” as Fallon and Timberlake traded off on a verse, then nimbly pivoting into a peek at Public Enemy’s “Bring the Noise.” Curiously, it was Fallon who did most of the heavy vocal lifting, taking on the chorus to Rob Base and DJ EZ Rock’s “It Takes Two” as Timberlake jived behind him and added the song’s indelible yelps. From there they busted through a variety of hip-pop standards: Salt n’ Pepa’s pelvic-thrusting “Push It,” a tiny taste of Vanilla Ice’s “Ice Ice Baby,” Black Sheep’s “The Choice Is Yours,” Cypress Hills’ “Insane in the Brain” and a hip-swiveling throwdown of DJ Kool’s party anthem, “Let Me Clear My Throat.” The pair had clearly rehearsed the bit to a T, because neither stumbled even for a moment during the routine. Whether it was their thuggish ruggish take on DMX’s thudding “Up in Here,” Timberlake’s swishing falsetto break on Nelly’s “Hot in Herre” (which lead to an awkward moment where both men seemed to question their sexuality for a brief second), or their intertwined duet on 50 Cent’s “In da Club,” the music just flowed seamlessly. Timberlake gave the crowd a bit of sugar during Outkast’s “Hey Ya,” shaking his booty while Fallon sang the verse, before both men took on the falsetto chorus. They then teased Lil Wayne’s “A Milli” and got their Auto-Tune on for DJ Khaled’s “All I Do Is Win.” While Fallon needs a bit of work, clearly nobody has to school Timberlake in the finer art of Cali Swag District’s “Teach Me How to Dougie,” though the former boy-band star did have to ease his co-star back a bit when Jimmy got a tad too into character and in the cameraman’s face during a menacing trip through Rick Ross’ “Blowing Money Fast.” “Jimmy, Jimmy, stop … why do you always do that?” a concerned Timberlake said as he pulled his pal back. The whole shebang ended with the boys trading lines on Biz Markie’s “Just a Friend” and then rolling out into the studio and getting the audience to help them sing the chorus. “Clap your hands, everybody, if you got what it takes, cuz I’m Justin, I’m Jimmy and we want you to know that these are the breaks,” they chanted as they brought it all home. My name is Gina. My Bieber experience started on 6/17/11 when I had found out about Justin’s launch for Someday at Macy’s. I knew I had to go. But first I had to do some research. I had called Macy’s about 5 times to check. I almost even spent all my bank account money on $3,500 tickets, but my parents wouldn’t let me. So I must have cried hysterically until my mom had agreed to bring me to Macy’s after school. So on Tuesday 6/21/11 we drove from NJ down to Herald Square. I figured the line would already be down the block when i got there at 3pm. However it wasn’t. I didn’t think it was that bad until I realized my mom and I were right under birds! All of them kept pooping on us throughout the night. It was crazy but only for Justin would I do that. I was literally shaking when the store finally opened at 10am the next morning (6/22/11). I had been there about 18 hours and only slept for 5 of them. But along the way I made some friends. So camping out wasn’t too bad. My mom and I the next day took the train to meet Justin at Macy’s, we got there around 12pm. We waited 4 hours to finally meet him. It was so crazy there. When I did meet him, I made a total fool of myself! I went up to him and put my arms around him and he did the same. I was in shock so after the picture I stared at him like a creep and then said, “I love you soooooo much!” and he just smiled. Then I quickly walked away and started bawling. But that wasn’t all. I knew he were taping Late Night with Jimmy Fallon almost immediately after so I was gonna head over there but after I ate it was too late. I headed over to Lincoln Square for the premiere of Monte Carlo. I was walking over and the police officer said you can’t stand here so I started to walk forward. Then the cop said, “Miss get back here where are you going?” just as Justin pulled up! I was so close to meeting him again, but I did get a video of Justin entering the theater. I loved my bieber experience. Hopefully it’s just not over yet! It was truly #someday. #NEVERSAYNEVER Your day will come. -@GinaGiudice_xo View post: My name is Gina. On last night’s episode of Late Night With Jimmy Fallon , Jimmy and the gang poked fun at Soul Train by showing a pre-taped sketch called “Dance Avenue” that spoofed the legendary Soul Train Line. Jimmy and members of Late Night ‘s house band, The Roots , participated in the sketch by donning Soul Train inspired costumes and dancing down the line. The Roots’ ?uestlove , an admitted Soul Train geek, certainly had his hand in making this spoof as authentic as possible. Keep an eye out for such Soul Train staples like a dancing Asian lady, and a random dancer wearing an E.T. costume. Honorable mention definitely goes to The Roots’ Black Thought in his captain’s outfit. We also gotta give props for the song the band recorded specifically for the show, “Doing Lines,” an obvious double entendre referencing the Soul Train line and the ever-present 80′s drug of choice, cocaine. When Stephen Colbert donated $26,000 of his BFFSM (best friend for six months) Jimmy Fallon’s money to DonorsChoose.org, Fallon couldn’t come up with the cash. Instead, he pledged that if his fans donated the money by, well, Friday, then Colbert would perform Rebecca Black’s epically awful song on his show. Poor little Bob and Max now know with which troubled parent they’ll be spending time over the next few months. Charlie Sheen and Brooke Mueller hammered out their custody agreement in Los Angeles County Superior Court yesterday, finalizing the following details regarding these twins: Both parents much submit to random drug testing three times/month. A nanny must be present at all times, no matter who has custody. Sheen will watch the children every other weekend for two months; then every weekend for the next two months, culminating in even more time with them if he remains drug and alcohol free. Neither Brooke nor Charlie can be photographed with Bob, Max… and any romantic partner. Tough break for the goddesses.
