Golden Globe Awards Belong To ‘The Social Network’ And ‘Glee’

‘The Kids Are All Right,’ ‘The Fighter,’ ‘Boardwalk Empire’ also garner multiple awards. By Eric Ditzian The “Glee” cast backstage at the 2011 Golden Globes Photo: Steve Granitz/ WireImage When the final glasses of champagne had been drained at the 68th Golden Globe Awards on Sunday night (January 16), “The Social Network” and “Glee” sauntered away as the night’s big winners. Nominated in six categories, “Social Network” won four awards, including Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Director for David Fincher, Best Screenplay for Aaron Sorkin and Original Score. And honored in five separate categories, Fox’s hit musical comedy collected three trophies, Best Comedy Series, Supporting Actor (Chris Colfer) and actress (Jane Lynch). Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical went to “The Kids Are All Right,” one of two awards the film won. In the major TV categories, freshman HBO series “Boardwalk Empire” won Best Drama, while the “Glee” win marked the show’s second-straight best comedy award. To begin the evening, host Ricky Gervais had a beer waiting for him on the podium and took a slug from the sudsy glass before he even opened his mouth. It was just that kind of party. “It’s going to be a night of partying and heavy drinking. Or, as Charlie Sheen calls it, breakfast,” he joked, setting the tone for a raunchy and fearless emcee performance from start to finish. Long an Oscar front-runner, Natalie Portman won Best Actress – Drama for “Black Swan” and delivered one of the show’s most memorable acceptance speeches. Sporting a noticeable baby bump, she addressed fianc

Gwyneth Paltrow Sings With Cee Lo, Covers Taylor Swift On ‘SNL’

Pee Wee Herman and Anderson Cooper turn up in a digital short about boozy debauchery. By Mawuse Ziegbe Cee Lo, Gwyneth Paltrow and Jason Sudeikis perform on “SNL” Jan. 15 Photo: NBC When Cee Lo promised that he and Gwyneth Paltrow would be cranking out some musical moments when they both turned up on “Saturday Night Live,” he wasn’t playing around. The Lady Killer singer hit the stage twice, but he also showed off his comedic chops by popping up alongside Gwyneth in three different sketches. The “Closet Freak” singer wasted no time getting on with the funny business, by first turning up in Paltrow’s opening monologue. After the “Country Strong” star pumped up her country-music knowledge, including hits by the “lady with the hair and the big boobs,” Jason Sudeikis appeared as white-haired legend Kenny Rogers for his classic duet with “the boob lady” — also known as Dolly Parton — “Islands in the Stream.” After Paltrow flubbed the lyrics, Cee Lo sauntered onstage to join the duo, who all belted the lines perfectly. Although they didn’t share the mic, Paltrow and Cee Lo also showed up in a sketch about a bar mitzvah with tons of A-list performers rocking Jewish-friendly versions of their hits. Cee Lo, of course, played himself, rocking a full-length fur and swapping out “Forget You” for “Hebrew.” Paltrow played up her country connection by appearing as Taylor Swift and putting a Jewish twist on “You Belong With Me” with lyrics about Mel Brooks and shopping at Loehmann’s. Paltrow also hooked Cee Lo up with an extra-special introduction to his first performance, appearing in a skit as a record executive grappling with how to market the Gnarls Barkley vocalist’s potty-mouth single. Although, in this office, “forget” is a bad word, and Paltrow’s co-workers gasp when she spews things like, “Are you forgetting kidding me?” When Cee Lo strolls in, he greets everyone with “What’s up, motherforgetters?” and adds that he’s “feeling good, my Nintendos.” After some back-and-forth about censoring Cee Lo’s hit, Paltrow gets on the phone with the FCC, which declares the former Goodie Mob MC can say “forget you” on television — which segues right into the star’s first song. Backed by band of foxy musicians in clingy magenta minidresses and go-go boots, Cee Lo rocked the retro jam in front of a huge set piece swirled with Technicolor hues. Silhouettes of back-up dancers also grooved behind the star as he belted “I love you!” with abandon, looking slick in a black sequined shirt and gold chain. While Paltrow gave Cee Lo a standard “SNL” introduction for his second song, the singer souped up the look of the stage with scenes of a glittery skyline and flashy New York City streets splashed onto the set piece. With his groovy-looking band in tow, the crooner ripped through “Bright Lights, Bigger City,” swapping out the gold chain for a silver one and finishing up the performance with a raspy, rock-star-esque “Ow!” Paltrow popped up in other sketches as a comely cop who prompts an awkward reaction from Jay Pharoah as Will Smith on “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” a leggy Heidi Klum auditioning to be a replacement host for CNN’s “Parker Spitzer” and a Spanish-speaking SportsCenter anchor who peppers her rapid-fire commentary with spot-on English pronunciations. In addition to Paltrow, another musical screen star made a special “SNL appearance: kooky personality Pee Wee Herman, played by Paul Reubens . In the skit, Andy Samberg runs into Reubens’ bow-tie-rocking alter ego at a bar, and they both end up knocking back tons of shots and getting into all types of booze-powered debauchery. Pee Wee even busted out his signature jerky, pelvic thrust before trying not to vomit all over the patrons. The rowdiness doesn’t stop there, as Samberg and Herman drunkenly wander in to the street and Pee Wee ends up smashing a chair on both a cop and CNN’s Anderson Cooper. The duo stumble home to an intervention staged by the pair’s friends, including Pee Wee’s puppet pals Chairry, Pterri and Conky. After Samberg and Herman agree to get their act together, everyone, including a bandaged Cooper, celebrates their new commitment to behaving properly with — what else? — a round of shots. Golden Globes Red Carpet: Watch For Spider-Man, Jack Sparrow, More

MTV News can’t wait to chat with David Fincher about ‘Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,’ Christopher Nolan about ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ and more tonight. By Eric Ditzian Andrew Garfield in “Spider-Man” Photo: Columbia Pictures As all of Hollywood descends on the Beverly Hilton Hotel hours from now for the 68th Golden Globe Awards, MTV News will be at the center of the action. We’ll be reporting live from the red carpet, from the show itself, and then from the celeb-packed afterparties hosted by HBO, NBC and the Weinstein Company. Hollywood Crush will kick things off with a red-carpet live blog, followed by MTV Movies Blog with a live blog of the actual show. And, of course, you can find all the latest news from the entire event at MTVNews.com. It’s set to be a crazy night, chock-full of news about awards season and other high-profile projects currently in the works. Here are a few of the folks we’re most psyched to chat with on the carpet: Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone : These “Spider-Man” co-stars have each been nominated for acting awards, though neither are likely to come out on top. No matter! Self-deprecating kids that they are, the stars will be pumped just to be invited to the party. Expect some comments from each on the brand-new first-look photo of Garfield in his Spidey gear . James Franco and Anne Hathaway : Both are up for acting awards, and we’re wondering if they’ll be able to calm their nerves long enough to take notes from Ricky Gervais about how to knock an emcee gig outta the park. We’ll be asking them for teasers about what they have planned for their Oscar hosting gig : musical numbers, digital shorts, witty barbs at the expense of their A-list colleagues? David Fincher : He’s the favorite to win Best Director at the Globes — as well as at the Oscars — but “The Social Network” isn’t the only flick of his that has caught our attention as of late. This week, the first official photos of Rooney Mara as Lisbeth Salander in “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” hit the Web. And when it comes to Fincher’s adaptation of that international best-selling crime thriller, there’s truly nothing we don’t want to know. Christopher Nolan : The “Inception” director might not steal a Globe statuette from Fincher, but he deserves yet another round of applause for the herculean accomplishment of making a kick-ass action flick out of such a WTF concept. He’s at the top of his game, and we couldn’t be more excited about what he’s planning for “The Dark Knight Rises.” Will the tight-lipped director spill any secrets about that upcoming project? Stay tuned! Johnny Depp : The guy is the front-runner to win best comedy/musical actor for “Alice in Wonderland,” but the Los Angeles Times floated an interesting hypothetical for the mercurial, normally above-the-fray actor: What if neither of his nominations — for both “Alice” and “The Tourist” — translate into victory? After losing for “Pirates of the Caribbean” in 2004, Depp reportedly stormed off “in a huff,” never to return. We’ll be looking for some insight into his pre-show mind-set on the red carpet, as well as some juicy details about his latest “Pirates” movie, due later this year. 8 Milestones in the Evolution of Vince Vaughn

In The Dilemma , Vince Vaughn plays a man who witnesses his best friend’s wife cheating with another man. Ron Howard’s latest film is a departure of sorts for Vaughn compared to other films if only because the overall tone cannot be described as a “laugh riot.” Still, how did Vaughn become one of the most bankable comedy stars in Hollywood after beginning his career in drama? You can always trace a direct line through a handful of important roles to illustrate what led to an actor’s current success, and with Vaughn, that line was definitely on a downward slant until Todd Phillips came along and cast him in Old School . Let’s look at eight performances — including one of his earliest — that trace the evolution of one Vincent Anthony Vaughn.

Channing Tatum Talks Possible Johnny Depp ’21 Jump Street’ Cameo

‘It’s really his pick,’ he tells MTV News of roles Depp could play in big-screen adaptation of ’80s cop show. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Channing Tatum Photo: MTV News The last time we asked Johnny Depp about signing on for a cameo in a big-screen adaptation of “21 Jump Street,” the Oscar-nominated actor said simply, “I’m in. I think it’d be pretty easy.” That one question has one of the film’s stars declaring his love for MTV News. “Thank you, so much! Thank you, I love you!” laughed Channing Tatum , who’ll star alongside Jonah Hill in the upcoming project “We’re going to try and do it. With every piece of us, we’re going to try to do it.” Hill, who penned the script, has previously told us he has a specific cameo for Depp in mind, but Channing indicated that the original star of the ’80s TV series would be able to choose from a variety of roles. “There are a bunch of possible characters he could play,” the “Dilemma” star said. “It’s really his pick.” Tatum and Hill’s parts are already set: They’ll play undercover detectives sent back to pose as high school students. “What happens is they get caught up in the high school-ness as opposed to the police work,” Hill previously told MTV News . “And whenever they get too caught up in the high school drama, police work comes in. And whenever they get too caught up in the police work, high school drama comes in.” And just for the record, neither of their characters, Tatum said, are related to characters from the original series. So Tatum won’t be, say, the son of Depp’s Tom Hanson. “It’s an entirely new imagination of what ’21 Jump Street’ is,” he explained. “We’re not doing a spoof whatsoever. It will be crazy characters that are in very unreal circumstances sometimes.” Do you want to see Johnny Depp revisit his “21 Jump Street” character for the movie? Tell us in the comments! People’s Choice Awards Spiced Up By Katy Perry, ‘Twilight,’ Johnny Depp

Elton John, Natalie Portman, Taylor Swift bring star power to Queen Latifah-hosted event. By Mawuse Ziegbe Katy Perry onstage at the 2011 People’s Choice Awards Photo: Mark Sullivan/WireImage People choosing things is always a good reason to throw a huge party, right? At least that’s what the folks behind the 2011 People’s Choice Awards thought, so they tricked out this year’s trophy handout with a super starry lineup of celebs and a few fun performances. Host Queen Latifah kicked off the festivities with a huge musical number, barreling down the aisles of Los Angeles’ Nokia Theater in a black suit, big jewels and casual kicks, flanked by scores of dancers thrusting their fists in the air to Taio Cruz’s “Dynamite.” The Queen even got the audience to join in the fun, as the sea of celebs waved their hands in the air as the hip-hop legend-turned-Hollywood player rhymed over the peppy track. The performance set the tone for a night big on lighthearted appearances from entertainment A-listers. Jennifer Aniston handed out Favorite Comedic Star to funnyman Adam Sandler, who was also joined by David Spade and Rob Schneider to accept Favorite Comedy Movie for “Grown Ups.” “Black Swan” starlet Mila Kunis made her first awards-show appearance since her breakup with longtime beau Macaulay Culkin, chatting about having someone to always wake up to and keep her smiling before giving out the award for Favorite Talk Show Host to Conan O’Brien. “When you’re up for an award and you’re up against Oprah, you don’t want to win. It makes Oprah very unhappy,” the ginger-haired comic quipped about besting the TV titan before thanking fans for making 2010 “one of the best years of his life,” despite his late-night drama with NBC. One of the big star-power moments of the evening went down when pop legend Elton John strolled out to a standing ovation to present the award for Favorite Country Artist. Country princess Taylor Swift appeared genuinely awestruck when Sir Elton handed over the trophy, but remembered to congratulate the music luminary on becoming a new dad. “This award coming from you is such a showing of love,” Swift told her fans of the accolade. The newly single singer also thanked her adoring public for being people she “can count on.” Selena Gomez & the Scene hit the stage to perform their track “A Year Without Rain.” Gomez helmed the ballad in a flowing printed gown with a voluminous train and dangly hoop earrings as fog crept along the stage. The group wrapped up the performance with a special surprise when they were presented with the award for Favorite Breakout Artist. Latifah showed off her sassy wit throughout the night, often copping to going off script, like when the audio from her mic got spotty and she jokingly blasted producers by proclaiming, “I’m the host! You can’t cut me off!” Awards-show host extraordinaire Neil Patrick Harris — who later shouted out his new twins in baby-talk when he nabbed Favorite TV Comedy Actor — gave her an A+ for handling the technical glitch when she checked in with him about her hosting skills. “Glee” star Jane Lynch made a plea to keep music education in schools when she took home the trophy for Favorite TV Comedy Actress and a buzz-cut-sporting Zac Efron won Favorite Movie Star Under 25. Screen veteran Johnny Depp also made a rare awards-show appearance when he showed up to receive the award for Favorite Movie Actor. The “Pirates of the Caribbean” star received a standing ovation when he took the stage, greeting presenter Taylor Swift (his daughter is a fan) and thanking the fans for the “stupefying honor.” Curvy reality sisters Kim, Kourtney and Khlo

Golden Globes Tap Robert Pattinson, Jennifer Lopez As Presenters

Matt Damon will present the Cecil B. DeMille lifetime-achievement award to Robert De Niro during the January 16 awards show. By Kara Warner Robert Pattinson Photo: Soul Brother/ FilmMagic With the 68th annual Golden Globes a little more than a week away, it’s time to find out what famous faces will be seeing onstage January 16 from the Beverly Hilton Hotel — in addition to the nominees, of course. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced Tuesday (January 4) via Twitter the names of three presenters. The lucky lady and gentlemen are: new “American Idol” judge Jennifer Lopez, “Twilight” superstar Robert Pattinson and “True Grit” actor Matt Damon. It was not announced for which categories Lopez and Pattinson will present, but Damon will present the Cecil B. DeMille lifetime-achievement award to Robert De Niro. The annual event, which is one of the few awards shows to recognize achievements in both television and film, is always a star-studded affair. Katie Holmes, Blair Underwood and Josh Duhamel announced the nominations back in December, which singled out “The King’s Speech,” starring Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush and Helena Bonham Carter, with seven nods in categories including Best Motion Picture – Drama and Best Director. “Black Swan” and “The Social Network” were the next most-nominated films, with four nods each. Many critics agreed that the most surprising nominations went to Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie for the “The Tourist,” which received lukewarm reviews. In the world of television, “Glee” was once again the most-nominated TV series, followed by critical darlings and award favorites “30 Rock” and “Mad Men.” The 68th annual Golden Globe Awards will air live Sunday, January 16, at 8 p.m. ET, hosted by awards-show scene stealer and “Office” creator Ricky Gervais . Kanye West’s Style Guru Talks ‘Art And Fashion’

Cassius Marcellus Cornelius Clay tells MTV News about helping the MC develop his Rosewood movement. By Hillary Crosley Cassius Marcellus Cornelius Clay Photo: MTV News From Egyptian jewelry to “wearing women’s accessories,” as he mentioned himself during the New York premiere of his film “Runaway” in October, Kanye West is always pushing the fashion envelope. Most recently, the MC hired a 20-year-old Yale student named Cassius Marcellus Cornelius Clay to work behind the scenes of his Rosewood movement. Sporting an eye-catching bowtie made of feathers, Clay described to MTV News his duties for the MC: “We work on art and fashion, and I do a lot of research for style and design things for him.” Late last year, Clay’s working relationship with West surfaced on the Web, prompting many fans to ask, “When did Kanye meet this guy?” According to Clay, his tide of G.O.O.D. fortune began earlier in 2010. “We met this summer in New York, we became friends, and I really respect him a lot so I’m happy to be working with him,” he said. He shies away from being called “Kanye’s stylist,” but Internet buzz suggests Clay advised Kanye to apologize to Taylor Swift via Twitter in September for interrupting her 2009 Video Music Awards acceptance speech. Still, Clay’s main focus is fashion and all things beautiful. “We work on clothes together,” he explained. “I’m an art history major at Yale, so my focus is really art and the whole aesthetic culture, and that’s really what interests me. And I think that he appreciates it, and it’s nice to talk to him about it as well.” The style consultant went on to say that he’s taken a leave of absence from Yale to focus on his new job.
