Tim Burton Has A Big 2010 Thanks To ‘Alice In Wonderland,’ MOMA Exhibit

And that’s why the veteran director is one of the entertainers we’re most thankful for this year. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Tim Burton Photo: Pascal Le Segretain/ Getty Images In Hollywood, the land of superlatives and flagrant puffery, the term “visionary” is thrown about too casually and bestowed upon flash-in-the-pan acts that all too often come and go with the change of seasons. However, one artist for whom the descriptor is fitting, whose films truly transport audiences to other dimensions and offer a childlike sense of wonder, is director Tim Burton. And this year, thanks to “Alice in Wonderland,” which brought in an estimated $1 billion at the box office ($334 million domestic, $690 million international) in addition to 20-plus years of unique and exciting filmmaking, Burton is one of the folks in the entertainment world for whom we’re most thankful. As part of MTV’s Thankful Week, we had the pleasure of chatting with Burton about the stress and eventual success of “Alice,” if we’ll be seeing a sequel or a musical adaptation on the Great White Way and a few hints about upcoming projects. MTV : Tim, every year here at MTV News, we select a few people we’re most thankful for. And you’ve had quite a year with the phenomenal success of “Alice in Wonderland” and a retrospective at New York’s Museum of Modern Art . Tim Burton : Wow. Well, that’s quite an honor. Thank you. MTV : Did it feel like this year was a special one? Burton : Yeah, it was interesting. The MOMA show was very special, and then going to the Cannes film festival and “Alice” — it was a lot of stuff going on. It was a special year for me, definitely. MTV : Were you a little more reflective than usual with the MOMA show? Burton : Yeah, I think so. It kind of forced me to look at myself, which I don’t do very often. I even avoid mirrors as I walk by them. It was a bit of a surprise in a good way. It did make me more reflective. You know, as you go on in life, there are less and less surprises — especially nice surprises, so it’s really, really great to feel surprised in a good way. MTV : We spoke a few times when you were working on “Alice,” and frankly, you seemed stressed. Burton : I was really stressed. We were doing music to no images. It was terrifying. In a weird way, it was quite exciting too, because you never know with a film what it’s going to turn out to be. But this was just an extreme, extreme version of that. MTV : How did you feel about the 3-D debate that came with the film? Some criticized the conversion to 3-D you used. Burton : Right, yeah, but that was kind of a funny argument because the thing is, we’ll shoot what? It’s not like we were doing motion-capture or we had sets. There was nothing to shoot. We planned for it. It was kind of a created argument in a way. Everybody likes to have a celebrity death match. Who will win? Things have more shades to it than that. MTV : Right, because a lot of it became about you and James Cameron’s different approaches to 3-D. Burton : Yeah. They’re doing “Titanic” in 3-D . What, they’re going to go back and shoot it in 3-D? No. They’re going to do the same thing we did. MTV : Is Disney putting the pressure on for a sequel for “Alice”? Burton : No, they haven’t, which was smart of them. They saw that it was kind of its own thing. They didn’t push for it at all, which I thought was really amazing, and smart, and right. MTV : And you are content to leave the story where it is? Because you do leave an opening at the end … Burton : Yeah, but that’s what the material does to me, it leaves it open for you. It’s kind of like dreams. It leaves it open, as it should, for interpretation. It’s like I got a lot of pressure to do a sequel to “Nightmare [Before Christmas],” and I just didn’t want to do that, because some movies should just be left alone. I think it keeps their kind of spirit intact in a way. MTV : There’s been talk about adapting “Alice” into a Broadway show. Are you involved in that? Burton : I’m talking to them about that just because there was a seedling of an idea that I thought was interesting. I don’t know how far it will go, but it’s something. I’ve always kind of wanted to do something live onstage. I’m just going to explore it and see what happens. MTV : It sounds like you’ll be shooting “Dark Shadows” with Johnny Depp soon? Burton : Yeah, I’m working on the script, and, you know, it’s been kind of a long time coming, but I think I’m getting a script that I like. I don’t really like talking, because I’m not really sure what’s happening yet, but I’m excited about it. I think, yes, finally for me, it’s getting to be the right tone. MTV : Have you and Johnny talked specifically about his take on Barnabas Collins, the vampire at the center of the series? Burton : Yeah, we’ve been talking about it. I mean, he’s finishing up another movie, but we’ve had a couple of really good meetings. Yeah, you know, I’m excited. MTV : Have you started shooting “Frankenweenie” ? Burton : We just started a couple of shots. It ‘s good. We’ve got a pretty low budget, but I’m excited about it. We’ve got a couple of shots that are done. Yeah, it’s just starting. It’s great. Thanksgiving is a time for taking stock, expressing gratitude and, most importantly, overeating. We at MTV News have been gorging all year at movie theaters, so it’s about time we looked back and gave thanks to our favorite actors and filmmakers of 2010. Ryan Reynolds Named People’s Sexiest Man Alive

‘Now it’s going to be, ‘Sexiest man, take out the garbage,’ actor says of how wife Scarlett Johansson will react to accolade. By Jocelyn Vena Ryan Reynolds is name People ‘s “Sexiest Man Alive” for 2010 Photo: Time Inc It’s a good week to be acting couple Scarlett Johansson and Ryan Reynolds. Johansson has been named GQ ‘s Babe of the Year and hosted “Saturday Night Live” for the third time, and Reynolds has just nabbed the coveted title of People ‘s Sexiest Man Alive . “My body naturally wants to look like Dick Van Dyke,” the “Green Lantern” star told People. “When I stop training, I turn into a skin-colored whisper. … You just have to go with the flow.” But earning the distinction of being 2010’s sexiest man apparently doesn’t have any clout on the home front with wife Johansson. “Now it’s going to be, ‘Sexiest man, take out the garbage.’ That does sound better,” Reynolds said. “The most difficult part is going to be organically working this title into a conversation with random strangers.” Reynolds joins an elite group of Hollywood hotties who have been named Sexiest, including Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Matt Damon, Johnny Depp and Hugh Jackman. People isn’t just honoring the rugged Canadian in the issue. “Mad Men” star Jon Hamm, “Twilight” hunk Kellan Lutz, one of the Hottest MCs in the Game, Drake , “Glee” star Matthew Morrison, “True Blood” star Joe Manganiello, Justin Timberlake and Jake Gyllenhaal, just to name a few, also made the cut. Drake was also named one of GQ ‘s Men of the Year, along with James Franco, Stephen Colbert and Jeff Bridges. Kim Kardashian is set to host a special about this year’s group of men on Wednesday night (November 17). “There are so many qualities that make this year’s Sexiest Man Alive sexy,” Kardashian said . “He’s so handsome, so funny. He has the full package.” Do you agree with People ‘s selection of Ryan Reynolds for Sexiest Man Alive? Tell us in the comments. ‘Piranha 3D’ Cheat Sheet: Everything You Need To Know

Dive into the campy horror flick with these fun facts! By Eric Ditzian Jerry O’Connell in “Piranha 3D” Photo: Gene Page / Dimension In a year when 3-D has seemed to take over the multiplex — you almost can’t walk past the candy counter without dodging flying spacemen, fire-breathing dragons or Johnny Depp in a wacky top hat — “Piranha 3D” might win the award for most outrageous flick of them all. It might simply be the bloodiest and raunchiest film ever to be presented in three dimensions. It was actually a running debate among the cast, when we visited the Lake Havasu, Arizona, set in June 2009, whether the movie showcased more blood or more boobs . No definitive answer was ever reached. Directed by horror maven Alexandre Aja (“The Hills Have Eyes”), the movie is the most high-tech installment of the “Piranha” horror/comedy franchise, a series spearheaded in 1978 by producer and schlock guru Roger Corman and then helmed by James Cameron in 1981. This time, the movie takes place during spring break, when thousands of hormone-addled college students descend on a sun-drenched resort spot just as an earthquake unleashes a swarm of prehistoric piranhas with a taste for blood. And boobs. Unlike those unfortunate spring breakers, MTV News is not unprepared for these nasty fishies. We’ve been tracking the production for years and now present a blood-soaked (though still family-friendly version of our big-screen cheat sheets: everything you need to know about “Piranha 3D.” Before Disaster Strikes The script had been floating around Hollywood for years — Aja first read it five years ago — and made its way into the hands of several potential directors, including Chuck Russell (“The Scorpion King”), before Aja signed on. “It’s going to be unique because it’s going to be completely in 3-D,” Aja told MTV News at Comic-Con in 2008. “I think people don’t realize the effect of all the elements coming out from the screen at you. It’s very traumatic.” The film was supposed to go into production that same year but was eventually delayed because of weather and location concerns, as well as the general difficulties of shooting a 3-D film set on the waterfront. “There’s so many problems that we’re going to have to solve,” Aja told us early in 2009. “After doing a movie with mirrors where it was kind of like a nightmare to avoid all the reflections, making a movie in 3-D underwater and on the water is going to be the biggest challenge.” But the production delays did not damper the filmmakers’ enthusiasm about the project. “We realized that, with the advent of 3-D, that we thought we could make the ultimate ‘Jaws’ for this generation ,” producer Mark Canton (“300”) told us in early May ’09. “It’s a multi-invasion. You have the invasion of youth expecting to have that wild spring break, and then you have the invasion of this prehistoric, rather unpleasant species.” By that point, the cast was in place: Elisabeth Shue as a local sheriff, Jerry O’Connell as an adult-entertainment producer, Jessica Szohr as a college student, Christopher Lloyd as a scientist and Richard Dreyfuss, returning to the water decades after his starring turn in “Jaws.” Production kicked off days after our chat with Canton. Boobies and Blood MTV News swooped into Lake Havasu in June, chatting with the cast and trying to wrap our heads around the madness. “The movie is going to be insane, because as much blood as it has, it has the equal amount of boobies,” co-star Paul Scheer laughed. “It’s boobies and blood. And we supply the boobies!” “This movie is probably going to win the record of most dead people — and most blood and most nakedness and most everything,” co-star Kelly Brook added. The shoot wrapped up at the end of the summer, and it wasn’t without its perils. “I get claustrophobic, so when we were in a boat, I was kind of halfway under water at one point and it was like a really small little cage,” Szohr told us . “I was freaking out, actually. I was like, ‘I can’t breathe! I can’t get out of here!’ ” Before the summer-movie season kicked off in earnest, Aja gave MTV News a call to assure us that as bloody and breast-filled as we thought his movie was going to be, we had no idea what he had planned. “There’s going to be 3-D double-D boobs!” he laughed. “I want to know exactly how many different girls’ boobs are in the movie. I think it’s a lot. I think blood-wise, I have to get the final number, but we are beyond anything you can even imagine.” Don’t Go in the Water We got a few gruesome clues about Aja’s crazy plans when the first trailer dropped in May, delivering CG fish and lots of unclothed flesh, much of which the fish promptly chew to shreds. A couple of months later, a few more clips popped up online, once again showcasing a ton of flesh and blood, a lovely boat ride that turns into a bikini-filled horror show, Shue going for an unexpected midnight swim and Szohr getting freaked out that “there’s something in the water!” Indeed there is, Jessica. Indeed there is. “It’s a fun horror movie,” Scheer told us recently. “The same way when you saw ‘Jaws,’ and you were like, ‘Oh, this is fun.’ Lately a lot of horror is like, ‘I’m going to cut your toe off with this razor blade.’ This is going back to the date, fun horror movie.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Piranha 3D.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
