THG Talk: An Exclusive Interview with Jordin Sparks

Before American Idol viewers decided to vote for the same guitar-playing male every season (David Cook… Kris Allen … Lee DeWyze), they selected Jordin Sparks as their champion. We’ve been big fans of the talented singer since since she took the Fox stage and we were lucky enough to speak with her this week, as she took time away from her summer tour. We thank Jordin for her time and we present this exclusive interview below… What has the American Idol experience been like for you? Can it be compared to what you imagined it would be like? I imagined it would be easy, just a singing competition. HA! It was a lot of work and pretty stressful. But I made friendships that will last forever and I am really happy with how it turned out. You’ve sung with Chris Brown. You’ve sung at the Super Bowl. What has been the most memorable professional experience for you? Well, the fact that I get to sing for my job is the best thing. Everything else, the duet, the Super Bowl, touring… it’s all a bonus. Idol has received some criticism for naming three consecutive winners that were all very similar. Any thoughts on that? I definitely think that when the show started to allow instruments, it opened itself up to a whole bunch of people who wouldn’t have auditioned before. So I’m glad those people can have the opportunity as well. But the show shouldn’t receive criticism for naming winners the audience voted for. Any thoughts on Simon leaving? It’s bittersweet. Simon was made out to be the villain. I’m going to miss him for sure… It’s going to be so different without [Paula and Simon]. I wish them nothing by the best in whatever they do moving forward. What was it like to participate in the We Are the World remake ? It was amazing for me. The original is such a classic and pretty much everyone knows it… to see all the artists there for a cause bigger than ourselves was so humbling. This is your first-ever solo tour. Talk about your plans and hopes

Jordin Sparks is Headed to Broadway

Jordin Sparks is off to Broadway. The season six winner of American Idol is the latest finalist to land a role on stage, following in the talented footsteps of Clay Aiken and Constantine Maroulis, the latter of whom was even nominated for a Tony Award. Beginning on August 19, Sparks will star in In the Heights , a musical set in the Dominican-American community of New York’s Washington Heights. She’ll play the character of Nina Rosario for 12 weeks, through November 14. In January, former High School Musical star Corbin Bleu debuted in the lead of the play. Will Young Says Having The ‘American Idol’ Exit Song Is ‘Brilliant’

‘I’m really happy, because my song is now on the biggest show in America,’ the ‘Pop Idol’ champ says of ‘Leave Right Now.’ By Kelley L. Carter Will Young Photo: Mike Marsland/ WireImage As the first winner of Britain’s “Pop Idol,” Will Young was never voted off and, therefore, was never played off the stage with a goodbye song. Now, however, he’s up close and person with the “American Idol” season-nine exit song: It’s his track “Leave Right Now.” “It’s brilliant,” chuckled Young, who has sold more than 8 million records. “I haven’t released in America before, so I’m really happy, because my song is now on the biggest show in America. And it’s played every week. I’ve watched it over here a couple of times when I can, and I think it sounds great on the show.” Back in 2002, the 31-year-old Brit won “Pop Idol,” the show that launched the mega-popular “Idol” franchise, which has brought us budding superstars like Kelly Clarkson, Jordin Sparks and Jennifer Hudson. He’s hoping to build on the momentum of his “Idol” exit song, releasing a digital album in May and following that up with his first real working visit Stateside. So far on the docket are a few live shows, a few taped TV performances and, he’s hoping, a chance to head over to the “American Idol” stage. Still, he’s just grateful for his “Idol” opportunity and hopes to make as big a splash in the U.S. as he’s made worldwide. As for his tune, he couldn’t have picked a better calling card for American ears. “Funny enough, the song is more about taking yourself out of a situation, so in a way, I’m telling myself to leave, which is almost the harder thing to do,” he explained. “I think that’s what it is about, that song. So many people have experienced that. You’re coming back, and you think, ‘I really shouldn’t be in the situation, but here I am again.’ You know, that awful feeling where your heart has been broken once and you don’t know if you can do it again. That’s what that song is about. And that’s why I always love performing it.” Would you like to see Will break through Stateside? Do you like his “Idol” goodbye song? Our ‘American Idol’ top 12 cheat sheet looks at Stevens’ strengths and weaknesses. By Jim Cantiello Katie Stevens at the “American Idol” top 12 party Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images On Thursday night, “American Idol” revealed its top 12 finalists for the ninth season of the hit show. MTV News “Idol” expert Jim Cantiello whipped up a handy cheat sheet for each finalist, breaking down each specific “Idol” journey thus far. He also got the “Idol” hopefuls to weigh in when he caught up with them at Thursday night’s top 12 party in Hollywood. Katie Stevens Katie Stevens is the latest in a long line of teenagers with powerful voices on “American Idol.” So far, the Connecticut 17-year-old has struggled balancing her youthful age with her mature voice, but the voting public rewarded her with a spot in the top 12 anyway. Best Performance : During week one, Katie dared to tackle “Feeling Good” even though Adam Lambert had a “wow” moment with the song last season. She almost succeeded. Weakest Performance : Katie took a step in the right age direction by choosing a Kelly Clarkson song this week. Unfortunately, her uneven vocals on “Breakaway” exposed her youthful inexperience. ‘American Idol’ Top 12 Party Tragic Backstory : Katie is very close with her ailing grandmother, who is struggling with Alzheimer’s disease. Why She Will Win : “American Idol” has a long history of successful teenagers with mature voices. David Archuleta and Diana DeGarmo made it to the finale, and Jordin Sparks won the whole enchilada. Why She Will Lose : So far, Katie’s performances have been more Lisa Tucker than Jordin Sparks. What She Should Sing : Katie needs to embrace her youth and sing an uptempo song. “You Belong With Me” by Taylor Swift seems like a good start. On Her “Older” Song Selections : “Jordin Sparks won and she was my age, and she got the same criticism that I’ve gotten, which is, ‘You need to choose a younger song! Why are you choosing such old songs?’ But you know what? I have to stay true to who I am. And I do sing older stuff. I have an older voice, I guess, for my age, so … I’ll young it up, but I gotta stay true to who I am.” What do you think of Katie’s chances on “Idol”? Were you happy to see her make it to the top 12? David Archuleta and Jordin Sparks: No Air, Lots of Talent

Not so fast, Aaron Kelly ! While American Idol viewers are already comparing the aforementioned season nine contestant with David Archuleta, the former runner-up proved this week that he won’t be replaced without a fight. The talented young singer took to the stage with Jordin Sparks at the 2010 Jordin Sparks Experience, a pre-Super Bowl event held at Miami Beach on Wednesday night. Don’t they look adorable together? The former American Idol alumni performed a duet to “No Air,” the single Sparks originally made famous with Chris Brown. Could she have replaced Brown with anyone more opposite from him? We doubt it. This, of course, is a big compliment to David. The day he beats his girlfriend is the day Jon Gosselin starts caring about his kids. Watch the pair entertain the crowd below.
