Michelle Williams’ Awards Success ‘Surreal’ To Joshua Jackson

Former ‘Dawson’s Creek’ co-star says at Sundance that ‘My Week With Marilyn’ actress ‘had the clearest idea about what she wanted to do.’ By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Michelle Williams Photo: Jeff Vespa/ WireImage PARK CITY, Utah — A lot has changed since the days of “Dawson’s Creek.” Joshua Jackson is off fighting a war between parallel universes on “Fringe.” Katie Holmes is busy trying to get her husband down from that stupid couch. James Van Der Beek is … somewhere. But perhaps the most impressive arc of the old “Dawson’s” gang belongs to Michelle Williams. Since wrapping up her role as troubled teen Jen Lindley on the WB series, Williams has racked up two Academy Award nominations, for “Brokeback Mountain” and “Blue Valentine.” Very soon, she could be looking at her third, as many onlookers consider her a lock for a Best Actress nod for her work in “My Week With Marilyn,” a role for which she’s already won a Golden Globe. Though her days on the “Creek” are long behind her, Williams’ work has not gone unnoticed by her former co-stars. MTV News spoke with “Lay the Favorite” star Jackson at the Sundance Film Festival, where he expressed his joy in seeing his old friend’s success in the awards circuit. “It’s surreal in that it would be surreal to see any of your friends [up for an Oscar],” he said. “It’s amazing. She’s an excellent actress.” Still, Jackson doesn’t sound surprised by Williams’ continued awards buzz. “Of all of us, when we finished that show, she was the one who had the clearest idea about what it was that she wanted to do,” he said. “To be able to go out and achieve that is no small feat. I just think it’s wonderful.” That said, Jackson joked that Williams must be getting a bit tired of all the attention from Oscar voters: “You think she would be bored of it by now. She has to do a guns and explosions movie. ‘Come on! Enough! Quit giving me these awards!’ ” The 2012 Sundance Film Festival is officially under way, and the MTV Movies team is on the ground reporting on the hottest stars and the movies everyone will be talking about in the year to come. Mighty Ducks Hardcore Rap: Emilio’s Dealio

This seems annoying at first, but trust me when I say it takes 20 seconds for this ditty entitled “Quack Attack” (by the august rapper Lil Deuce Deuce) to bloom into the funniest video — let alone Mighty Ducks tribute — I’ve seen in the past month. And this month is almost over! That’s 30 days of supremacy. Please enjoy this triple deke of hysteria, and prepare to suffer a coronary when Kenan Thompson comes up.

The Mad Science of Fringe: With the Energy of Leonard Nimoy, You Can Go Home Again!

Some crazy stuff went down in the Grey’s Anatomy finale last night, but I don’t know about any of that because 1) I got off that train after about season three and 2) Fringe’s season finale was nearly perfect, drawing the episode’s threads together (namely the Peter dilemma) in a tenuously satisfying conclusion, only before everything went to hell in the last two minutes. It reeked of Jabrahms-inspired madness. It was wonderful. But enough fawning. Let’s break this down into our usual mad science capsules:

‘Fringe’ Stars Say Season Three Will Be Less ‘Clear-Cut’

Joshua Jackson and John Noble look forward to the aftermath of Thursday’s finale. By Jocelyn Vena John Noble and Joshua Jackson Photo: MTV News Thankfully, the world didn’t come to an end on Thursday’s “Fringe” season finale . But the dimensions of the universe as we know it will never be the same. That means that when season three of the Fox show premieres this fall, fans might get to know the alternate versions of the characters a lot better. The stars are certainly looking forward to that prospect. “It’s a huge opportunity for an actor to do it,” John Noble, who plays Walter Bishop, told MTV News earlier this week said about playing “Walternate.” “The other thing about ‘Fringe,’ and we hope this will happen, is that while it’s very clear-cut now — everyone’s sort of rooting for the old team — I’m hoping that it won’t [remain] so clear-cut.” In the long run, viewers may find themselves torn between both sets of characters, Noble suggested. “The people on the other side have a very good case to make here,” he explained. “And then you say, ‘Who do [we go for]?’ If we can do that, we’ve created a great drama.” Joshua Jackson, who plays Walter’s son Peter, teased that seeing Peter’s mom again may convince him to go back to that other dimension. But after Thursday’s episode, there’s another woman that may get him to cross over again: his love, the real Olivia, who was left stranded on the other side after a quick bait and switch. “I can’t imagine a thing that would draw him more strongly back into the other universe: Here he is confronted with his mother … and then at the same time he has this — if not blood connection, but familial connection,” Jackson said. “He was raised and has lived and become connected to our Walter, so he really is dynamically torn. There are reasons for him to choose both.” Jackson argued that though what the alternate Olivia has done seems wrong, in the long run, he agrees with Noble that we just don’t know if those intentions are all that bad. “The other Olivia is sort of the polar opposite to the Olivia we have, or seemingly right now,” he said. “And Walternate is a bit of a polar opposite to the Walter that we’ve known, but if we do it well, you’ll get to know those alternates better. And you’ll see that they are fully fleshed-out characters as well.” What did you think of the “Fringe” season finale? Tell us in the comments!

‘Fringe’ Finale Is A ‘Tug-Of-War Between Two Universes,’ Stars Say

‘You have to watch the last five minutes … and that will tell you a lot,’ Joshua Jackson says of the episode. By Jocelyn Vena Fans are eagerly anticipating the season finale of “Fringe” on Thursday night (May 20). With a rift in the Bishop clan, the entire crew trying to save the world from an alternate dimension and the possibility that Peter is the key to the end of the world, anything is possible. John Noble and Joshua Jackson, who play the Bishop father/son combo, said the show’s final few minutes will really leave fans shocked. “You have to watch the last five minutes … and that will tell you a lot,” Jackson revealed earlier this week to MTV News. Noble said that even he isn’t sure if Peter (Jackson) is the key to saving or destroying the universes. “It’s only Walter surmising that that’s the case, so science, as we know it now, would suggest that unless we do something rapidly, it could happen,” he said. “But it won’t happen, because we have a story to tell, and being very inventive people, we will find a way to get past that problem. “The interesting thing about ‘Fringe’ is, the only character that doesn’t change is Peter,” he continued. “Peter is the constant, and this season we’ve been talking about Peter a lot. … It’s all been building. When Walter said in the last episode [that Peter] could be responsible for the end of the world, it’s actually about Peter. So we have this tug-of-war between two universes for this character, and I play both dads.” Fans, however, wonder when the rift between the Bishop men will eventually mend. “Isn’t that the foundation of a good story? Isn’t the whole point that they never get to the end of the story until the show is off the air? But that’s what family is too,” Jackson said. “We were making progress. We become closer together. Circumstances, like being from an alternate universe, come and tear you apart and then slowly repair.” What do you think will happen on the “Fringe” season finale? Share your theories in the comments!

Kristen Stewart, Taylor Swift Show Feminine Finest At Met Costume Institute Gala

Katy Perry lights up the carpet, while Sarah Jessica Parker and Nicole Richie bring back ’70s glam. By Jocelyn Vena Kristen Stewart at the Met costume gala Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage Hollywood’s and New York’s brightest stars lit up the red carpet at the annual Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Gala held in New York City on Monday night. In a sea of sparkling nudes and flowing black gowns, a few celebs broke the mold in bright pops of color. But as they celebrated the “American Women: Fashioning a National Identity” exhibit, most were displaying their haute couture finest. Kristen Stewart, Taylor Swift And More At Costume Institute Gala Kristen Stewart hit the carpet in a black Chanel taffeta gown that was very feminine for the “Twilight” star — and its sheer, beaded skirt was certainly eye-catching. Taylor Swift was all flowy romance in a long, white, vintage-inspired Ralph Lauren dress. Nicole Richie embraced ’70s disco glam in her floor-length silver Marc Jacobs gown, complete with silver sparkles and black velvet belt. Equally disco-chic was Sarah Jessica Parker in a shimmery, nude-colored pleated gown by Halston. She went a little Carrie Bradshaw with her big, matching hair-bow. Jennifer Lopez’s structured, silver Zuhair Murad Haute Couture gown had intense detailing from the bodice, down through the skirt. But Katy Perry had the most unique detailing of all: LED lights sewn into her pastel-pink dress. Among the other stars who dazzled at the event was Jessica Biel, who kept it sophisticated in her champagne-colored Ralph Lauren Collection silk charmeuse gown (and Justin Timberlake as her best accessory). Gwen Stefani hit the carpet with hubby Gavin Rossdale in a lam

The Mad Science of Fringe: Where Do Embryonic Shape-Shifters Come From?

Last night’s Fringe marked a huge reversal from the past two weeks’ filler episodes and gave us some real answers about shape-shifters and traveling between universes. In The Man from the Other Side, Thomas Newton opens a portal and gets someone he referred to as Mr. Secretary through to our universe. Peter, trying to stop Newton, realizes almost presciently that Walter kidnapped him out of the alt-world when he was young. And of course, angrily, he runs away. Now, I find it implausible that Peter could be angry at Walter for saving his life, but let’s take a look at the science of last night’s episode, shall we?

The Mad Science of Fringe: Time-Traveling Secrets Exposed!

In last night’s Fringe , Walter’s angst over pulling Peter out of the parallel universe compounded when he met a MIT time-travel researcher (Peter Weller of RoboCop ), who, in an effort to change his dead fiance’s past, sucked the biological energy out of a train car of people. Despite Walter’s appeals (“It’s not our place to adjust the universe”), the time traveler reunites with his fiance and apparently dies, eliminating any future contact with Walter and Co. and basically rendering the entire episode useless. But did the throw-away plot lend itself to equivalently disposable science? Read on for a look at the relative plausibility of Walter’s ramblings in White Tulip .
