Check out this article and let us know what you think. Although Hispanics tend to have lower self-esteem than blacks or whites in the teen years, by age 30 their self-esteem has increased to the point that they have higher self-esteem than whites, a new study suggests. And in both adolescence and young adulthood, blacks have higher self-esteem than whites. By age 30, whites trailed both Hispanics and blacks in terms of self-esteem, according to the report published online July 4 in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. Researchers at the University of Basel in Switzerland made this finding after analyzing U.S. survey data of more than 7,000 young adults from 1994 to 2008. The participants ranged in age from 14 to 30 years. Over the course of 14 years, the study authors examined how five personality traits (openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness and neuroticism) affected the youth’s self-esteem. In addition, the researchers also looked at the participants’ sense of life mastery, risk-taking tendencies, gender, ethnicity, health and income. “We tested for factors that we thought would have an impact on how self-esteem develops,” the study’s lead author, Ruth Yasemin Erol, said in news release from the American Psychological Association. “Understanding the trajectory of self-esteem is important to pinpointing and timing interventions that could improve people’s self-esteem.” The researchers found that conscientiousness, emotional stability, a feeling of mastery and being extraverted are key to predicting the direction a person’s self-esteem will take as they grow up, and that income did not affect this course. These findings, they pointed out, could assist health professionals in targeting treatments. We’re honestly surprised that older whites tend to lag in self-esteem in their latter years in comparison to blacks and hispanics. Hit up the comments section and state your piece. Source
Whenever I watch those episodes of Maury where these morbidly obese children are rolling around the stage chewing on Fruit Loops and furniture, I wonder where these parents lost their power. Since when can two and three-year-olds tell you what they are and aren’t going to eat? As a parent, it’s your responsibility to introduce the appropriate foods to your children. Is having an obese kid child abuse though? Should these children be taken away from their parents? It’s a slippery slope. Removing them from their homes and forcing them to eat better foods could also lead them to associate healthy eating with separation from their families. The only reasonable solution in my opinion would be to educate the parents of the obese about the benefits of a healthy diet, and how to prepare tasty, yet nutritious meals. Snatching those big ol’ kids out of their custody and stuffing carrots in their mouths, though? I don’t think so. Should parents of extremely obese children lose custody for not controlling their kids’ weight? A provocative commentary in one of the nation’s most distinguished medical journals argues yes, and its authors are joining a quiet chorus of advocates who say the government should be allowed to intervene in extreme cases. It has happened a few times in the U.S., and the opinion piece in Wednesday’s Journal of the American Medical Association says putting children temporarily in foster care is in some cases more ethical than obesity surgery. Dr. David Ludwig, an obesity specialist at Harvard-affiliated Children’s Hospital Boston, said the point isn’t to blame parents, but rather to act in children’s best interest and get them help that for whatever reason their parents can’t provide. State intervention “ideally will support not just the child but the whole family, with the goal of reuniting child and family as soon as possible. That may require instruction on parenting,” said Ludwig, who wrote the article with Lindsey Murtagh, a lawyer and a researcher at Harvard’s School of Public Health. “Despite the discomfort posed by state intervention, it may sometimes be necessary to protect a child,” Murtagh said. But University of Pennsylvania bioethicist Art Caplan said he worries that the debate risks putting too much blame on parents. Obese children are victims of advertising, marketing, peer pressure and bullying — things a parent can’t control, he said. “If you’re going to change a child’s weight, you’re going to have to change all of them,” Caplan said. Roughly 2 million U.S. children are extremely obese. Most are not in imminent danger, Ludwig said. But some have obesity-related conditions such as Type 2 diabetes, breathing difficulties and liver problems that could kill them by age 30. It is these kids for whom state intervention, including education, parent training, and temporary protective custody in the most extreme cases, should be considered, Ludwig said. While some doctors promote weight-loss surgery for severely obese teens, Ludwig said it hasn’t been used for very long in adolescents and can have serious, sometimes life-threatening complications. “We don’t know the long-term safety and effectiveness of these procedures done at an early age,” he said. Ludwig said he starting thinking about the issue after a 90-pound 3-year-old girl came to his obesity clinic several years ago. Her parents had physical disabilities, little money and difficulty controlling her weight. Last year, at age 12, she weighed 400 pounds and had developed diabetes, cholesterol problems, high blood pressure and sleep apnea. “Out of medical concern, the state placed this girl in foster care, where she simply received three balanced meals a day and a snack or two and moderate physical activity,” he said. After a year, she lost 130 pounds. Though she is still obese, her diabetes and apnea disappeared; she remains in foster care, he said. In a commentary in the medical journal BMJ last year, London pediatrician Dr. Russell Viner and colleagues said obesity was a factor in several child protection cases in Britain. They argued that child protection services should be considered if parents are neglectful or actively reject efforts to control an extremely obese child’s weight. This is just nasty! A British father and daughter separated for twenty years are now facing incest charges for the SECOND time after becoming sexually involved following their reunion. The couple pair first met six years ago when a then-20-year-old Nicola Yates sought out her biological father Andrew Butler, who is twenty years her senior, via a family tracking website Genes Reunited. After learning they’d been living in the same Birmingham neighborhood for years they decided to meet up. That’s when things went left!!! When they met again for the first time, Yates, who was 20 at the time, enjoyed a ‘highly charged, emotional reunion’ with her father, who at the time was in relationship with another woman nearer his age. Suspicions were aroused about the pair when she began to spend more time with Butler and developed more intense feelings for her natural father. Relatives were later horrified to discover the young woman and Butler had become illicit lovers. After authorities were alerted about the affair both parties admitted to incest. Yates was given 18 months community service while her father was ordered to serve four months behind bars! But apparently that wasn’t enough to deter them from ‘one mo”gin. In 2008 Nicola’s family became suspicious after she announced she had a new boyfriend but didn’t want to introduce him to them, even though her mother Katrina asked to meet him. What her family didn’t know was that she was secretly living with her father!!! She wasn’t too slick about it either. Nicola posted updates on her social networking accounts that hinted at what she was up to. The updates including her posting her favorite pastime as “Sex, sex, and more sex,” and she also listed five things she couldn’t live without: “Family, Andy, Mobile, Money, Straighteners.” Things came to a head when Nicola’s sister Natalie (who is 19 now) found sexual pictures of them on Nicola’s phone and showed them to her mother — who immediately recognized the ex-husband she split from two decades ago. The now 26-year-old Nicola Yates and her 46-year-old father were arrested last September and both admitted to having sex with an adult relative during an appearance at Birmingham Crown Court earlier this month. They are both currently out on bail but are set to be charged next month. They face up to two years in jail. Yates confirmed the affair when approached, saying: “It’s all true. My head’s all over the place at the moment,” she said.”I’m just waiting for the court case and then I want to move on with my life.” “I got in touch with him in the beginning because I wanted a proper father – daughter relationship. I hadn’t seen him since I was very little.” “I don’t really know how or why it happened, why things developed the way they did.” “I can honestly say I will never see him ever, ever again. I don’t want to have anything to do with him ever again.” It sounds really gross to us but apparently there’s a phenomenon called Genetic Sexual Attraction that explains how this happens. In fact Research by the British Medical Journal showed that half of those separated from relatives at a young age experience strong sexual feelings when they are reunited. Disgusting!!! SMH, something tells us this might not be over yet either… After all, they both went back for seconds! Source
‘We liked working together, so I can see it working,’ Joe tells MTV News of his ‘See No More’ partner. By Jocelyn Vena Joe Jonas Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images Joe Jonas was once a curly-haired kid from New Jersey who sang bubblegum pop/rock songs about puppy love with his brothers. Well, he’s grown up a lot since then. He chopped off his hair and, on his first-ever solo album , Fast Life, he’s opening up about falling in and out of love. And in August, the middle JoBro turns a very grown-up 22. So, what does he have planned for the big day? “I don’t have any birthday plans yet, actually,” he told MTV News recently. “I don’t even know where we’re going to be because we’re trying to figure out a touring situation right now and it either looks like I’m going on my tour, my own tour, or opening up for somebody, supporting somebody on tour.” While his plans are still to be determined, he was sure of one thing: “Wherever I am, there will be a party and it will be fun.” Speaking of tours, Joe was once rumored to be hitting the road with Britney Spears on her now all-female Femme Fatale trek . Those plans didn’t pan out, of course, and now he’s looking to hook up with someone else on the road. Joe even shared his dream tourmate with us. “My dream list, wow … I mean, doing a tour with Chris would be cool,” he said of Chris Brown, who helped the singer pen his first single, “See No More.” “I feel like, musically, we both have the same sounds and we liked working together, so I can see it working.” Joe’s album drops in September , and he told us that he’s not holding back on it. “It was scary in the beginning,” he said of doing a solo LP, “just because I knew this is my one opportunity to show people my journal: the good and bad of every relationship I’ve been in, you know, [and] what I look for [in relationships],” he explained. Most of the white folks we know be swirling it up, but apparently the ones that aren’t are hating on America’s “post-racial” situation… A new study has concluded that despite ongoing racial disparities in the U.S. (with blacks still mostly getting the short end of the stick) whites believe they are victims of racism more than blacks. SMH! According to researchers at Tufts University, the study they conducted actually contradicts the idea of the post racial society that many people believed was happening in conjunction with President Barack Obama’s election. “It’s a pretty surprising finding when you think of the wide range of disparities that still exist in society, most of which show black Americans with worse outcomes than whites in areas such as income, home ownership, health and employment,” study researcher Samuel Sommers, a psychologist at Tufts University, said in a statement. Sommers and his colleagues surveyed a group of 208 blacks and 209 whites from across the country using questionnaires which asked how much racial discrimination each group experienced from the 1950s onward. Both groups agreed on the amount of racial discrimination in the 50s, however whites believe that racism against blacks decreased faster than blacks do. Another big difference was that whites believe that anti-white bias has increased as anti-black bias has decreased. Researchers found that on average whites rated anti-white racism as more prevalent in the 2000′s than anti-black bias by more than a full point on a 10-point scale with 11% of whites weighing in that whites are currently “very much” targets of discrimination, compared with 2 percent of blacks who said blacks are “very much” discrimination targets. In other words — black folks aren’t playing the race card for the most part but more than 10% of whites are! The study suggests that whites see racial equality as a zero-sum game, in which one group wins at the other’s expense. “These data are the first to demonstrate that not only do whites think more progress has been made toward equality than do blacks, but whites also now believe that this progress is linked to a new inequality — at their expense,” Sommers and his colleagues wrote in May in the journal Perspectives on Psychological Science. Las Vegas Review Journal reports: A Las Vegas police officer under investigation for a videotaped beating of a man has been suspended with pay pending completion of an internal investigation, police said Saturday. On the night of March 20, Crooks, 36, was standing in his driveway while videotaping police as they investigated a reported burglary across the street. When Crooks refused to stop filming, Colling allegedly attacked him — with much of the altercation recorded by the camera. Crooks’ attorney, David Otto, on Thursday sent police a statement from Crooks, along with a demand for $500,000 to cover Crooks’ medial care, pain and suffering. A planned lawsuit has not yet been filed.
