Jermaine Sellers Says He Appeared ‘Diva-Ish’ On ‘American Idol’

‘Sometimes, the camera can make you look more arrogant,’ castoff says of his comments to the judges. By Katie Byrne Jermaine Sellers Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images Jermaine Sellers got some pretty harsh feedback from the “American Idol” judges for his semifinal performances, but said he was convinced that his faith would carry him through the negativity. His dream came to an end, however, on Thursday, when he was voted out of the competition , along with John Park, Haeley Vaughn and Michelle Delamor. “In God, there’s no failure,” the 27-year-old said after his elimination. So what’s next for the Joliet, Illinois, church boy? We caught up with him Friday (March 5) to discuss that and much more. Q : You were very outspoken about your faith on the show. Do you think your post-singing comments had anything to do with your elimination? A : Though I hate to say it, yeah, I do. Because sometimes, the camera can make you look more arrogant and diva-ish. Anybody that knows me knows I’m, like, the coolest guy. I like to make people laugh. I honestly do wear a onesie to bed, the whole nine yards. I hate it that I was made out to look like something that I’m not, but it’s television. I felt like every night that I went out there, I sang from my heart. And the part that really messed me up the most was that I couldn’t focus, because I was so scared about what was going to be said this week as far as me singing so much. I just felt like, the best way to prove a person wrong is by fighting them with God, letting God fight your battles. That’s why I kept throwing it out there. A lot of people don’t realize that with us making it this far in the competition, we haven’t really sat down and took time to thank God for us even making it this far. And without him, we’ll fail. That’s why I kept having to throw him out there. We don’t acknowledge him enough. Q : The judges obviously liked you enough to put you in the top 24, but then they tore you apart once the semifinals started. How did you take their sudden criticism? A : I took it the best way that I possibly could. The thing about it is, as an artist, you have to stay true to yourself. And with you staying true to yourself, it’s a certain way I sang my entire life, from a child on up. I kept pulling back. I pulled back a lot, because there was a lot more that I could have done. I felt like if I pulled any more back, it would be like I’m basically whispering to them. I’m a church singer. Q : What was your favorite part about making it so far on “American Idol”? A : Making it to top 20, it’s a blessing. That’s the best experience about it, just getting on that platform and being able to, not just sing to people, but to minister to them too. People don’t realize that the reason I sang songs like Oleta Adams [“Get Here”] and Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On?” — half of the reason I did “What’s Going On” was because I felt like we’re not paying attention to what’s going on as far as Haiti, as far as Chile. We’re not paying attention to it. We’re spending time focusing on other stuff when we should be focusing on what’s actually going on in the world right now. Q : If you could go back, would you change your song selections because of the judges’ comments? A : “American Idol” is for teenyboppers. There’s a lot of young people and they want to hear more current stuff. They want to hear the Keri Hilson stuff, “Knocks You Down” type stuff. And that’s not where my soul is. I’m more of “Let’s talk about reality. Let’s talk about what’s going on right now.” When I sang “Get Here,” I wasn’t just talking about one specific individual; I was talking about peace. I was talking about love, respect, joy. I want all of that to come back to us. Even though I tried to deliver it the best way that I could, I never got my point across because I let fear conquer me. ‘American Idol’ Experts Predict: Who’s Headed Home Tonight?

Jermaine Sellers, Haeley Vaughn seem likely to get bad news during the results show. By Gil Kaufman Jermaine Sellers performs on “American Idol” on Tuesday Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images Four hearts will be broken on “American Idol” on Thursday night (March 4). The only question is: Which two boys and girls will be the recipients of the bad news? We asked a couple of “Idol” experts to make their predictions on who deserves to go home. “Tim Urban, he’s a cute kid, but he’s got no singing chops or stage presence,” MJ Santilli, webmaster of “Idol” fan site MJsBigBlog.com , said about the floppy-haired singer who has miraculously stayed in the competition after getting a last-minute call-up due to Chris Golightly’s disqualification . “But after Simon’s praise, he’s staying put for at least another week.” In that case, Santilli’s other choice was cranky soul man Jermaine Sellers, who seemed to annoy the judges with his attitude and a slightly unhinged cover of Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Goin’ On.” “Not only was his oversinging horrendous,” she said, “but he’s super unlikable. Dude, God is not getting you to the next round. … Plus, his hair is stupid.” On the ladies’ side, Santilli said it was time to say sayonara to bubbly teen Haeley Vaughn, whose dreams of country/pop stardom crashed and burned with Wednesday night’s painful cover of Miley Cyrus’ “The Climb.” “Haeley has an adorable personality and a great spirit, but it’s become very clear that she’s in over her head,” Santilli said. “I don’t want to hear any more of her caterwauling, thank you.” Also worthy of booting? Fellow teen Katie Stevens, who just can’t seem to find her musical personality onstage. “She’s a boring pageant-bot, and there are similar yet better singers amongst the remaining girls,” Santilli said. MTV’s own “Idol” obsessive Jim Cantiello disagreed somewhat about which females should be shown the door. “Given that she was my early audition-round fave, it pains me to say that Lacey Brown deserves to head home,” he said of the 24-year-old antique-refurbishing nut who took the judges’ advice but still put up a fail with an uneven cover of Sixpence None the Richer’s “Kiss Me.” “She hasn’t figured out how to showcase her strange, interesting voice the way Lilly Scott has. Plus, this season there’s no shortage of squeaky-voiced quirkettes.” Also on Cantiello’s chopping block is seemingly sweet but a bit dull Michelle Delamor. “[She] should probably pack her things too,” he said of the children’s choir director who took a shot with a smoothed-out R&B cover of Creed’s “With Arms Wide Open.” “I give her credit for going out on a limb with that Creed song, but she didn’t nail the vocals. For such a crazy song choice, you’d think it’d be memorable, but it just wasn’t.” For more opinions on who might go home tonight, head to the Newsroom blog. Who do you think will go home tonight? Tyler Grady Isn’t ‘Bitter’ At ‘American Idol’ Judges

But booted contestant wasn’t planning to change for them either: ‘I probably would’ve just stuck to my guns.’ By Katie Byrne Tyler Grady on “American Idol” Photo: Fox While Tyler Grady made a lasting impression with his retro “American Idol” audition in Boston, he virtually went missing from the stage during Hollywood Week. That disappearing act might have marked the end for the 20-year-old from Nazareth, Pennsylvania — who was kicked off “Idol” on Thursday along with Ashley Rodriguez, Janell Wheeler and Joe Mu

Ellen DeGeneres Talks About Her First Week On ‘American Idol’

Comedian jokes about Simon Cowell and Ryan Seacrest during Friday’s episode of her talk show. By Gil Kaufman Ellen DeGeneres and Randy Jackson on Wednesday’s “American Idol” Photo: FOX Let’s face it: everyone had a rough first week on “American Idol.” The guys, for the most part, tanked, and the women were only marginally better. Even the judges had some difficulties, with Simon Cowell looking visibly bored at times, the other panelists seeming a bit off and new addition to the panel from the same case of nerves that affected many of the contestants. But no matter what the critics say, Ellen had a blast at her new gig. The veteran comedian discussed her first week of live “Idol” shows on the episode of her talk show airing Friday (February 26). “It’s been a fun week,” she told her in-studio audience. “I’ll tell ya, I like being live because anything can happen on live television.” Despite being seated at the other end of the judges’ table from Cowell, DeGeneres said that one of the British judge’s plunging necklines allowed her to get an eyeful of his chest on Thursday night. “Yesterday, Simon had so many buttons open on his shirt he almost had a wardrobe malfunction,” she joked. DeGeneres spent some time talking about the differences between watching “Idol” at home and experiencing it live. “I’ve watched from home for years and years and now I get to see what happens behind the scenes. It’s different, very different. I always knew that Ryan worked hard, but I had no idea during the commercial breaks he works another job selling Mary Kay cosmetics.” After discussing the in-studio sound of the contestants’ live vocals, she reiterated how “totally different” the music comes across in person than it does on television. “The mix is different in the studio, so everyone sounds one way in the studio and then I go home and I listen to it,” she said. “You know, in the studio Simon has a Texas accent and he’s the sweetest guy. He’s totally hairless. Totally different, totally.” DeGeneres is bringing a blend of good-natured comedy and boundless enthusiasm for “Idol” to the judges’ panel, and she continued that vibe on her own show on Friday. “It’s really exciting, though. There’s energy and excitement in the studio, and there is a lot of suspense,” she said. “That’s what they do. They build up tension and nerves. I won’t do that to you, though. I’m going to tell right now who I think is going to win. I think the person who’s going to win is … a girl or a guy.” Ellen will be back judging the 20 remaining hopefuls next Tuesday and Wednesday. On Thursday night, four more contestants will be sent home, and last year’s third-place finisher Danny Gokey will perform his new single, “My Best Days Are Ahead of Me.” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions. ‘American Idol’ Top 12 Men’s Report Card

Casey James gets our only ‘excellent’ grade, and the rest have some serious studying to do! By Eric Ditzian The “American Idol” top 12 men Photo: Patrick Ecclestein / FOX Call it a case of nervousness on the first day of class, a failure to study hard, or a bunch of students in over their heads. Whatever the case on Wednesday’s “American Idol,” the top 12 men arrived for their first live show test and promptly flunked. Most of them, at least, especially when compared to the top 12 women the previous evening. So, who surprised us, who disappointed us, and who’s in danger of going home? Let’s take a look at the top 12 men’s report card. (And don’t miss Jim Cantiello’s review in the Newsroom.) ‘American Idol’ Season Nine Performances Excellent Casey James : The judges predictably continued to milk the Kara-hearts-Casey storyline, which besides getting a bit tired, is starting to be unfair to the singer who called himself “just some dude.” Drop the manufactured drama, because with his stripped-down acoustic take on Bryan Adams’ “Heaven,” James established himself as a front-runner. He alone among the male contestants looked natural onstage. He alone injected a sense of live show verve to the dull proceedings. He alone deserves two gold stars. Satisfactory Andrew Garcia : By now, Garcia’s shtick has become clear: He takes a pop tune and turns it inside out. The judges were not impressed by his remix of Fall Out Boy’s “Sugar We’re Going Down,” but it hardly deserved such vociferous hate from them. If anything, Simon and his crew seem to be knocking down a front-runner just so that he might rise from the ashes later in the season. Make no mistake: Garcia is still the singer to beat this season. Todrick Hall : Hall took the judges’ instruction to be creative and ran with it … possibly off a cliff. It’s never good when words used to describe a performance include “murder,” “torture” and “verging on stupid.” But you know what? With his re-jiggered version of Kelly Clarkson’s “Since U Been Gone,” Hall displayed guts and creativity, and has us looking forward to his performance next week. He shouldn’t have a problem making it through. Joe Mu

‘American Idol’ Top 12 Women’s Report Card

Lilly, Michelle and Crystal go to the head of the class, but Haeley, Lacey and others are in danger. By Eric Ditzian Lilly Scott Photo: FOX The top 12 “American Idol” women have arrived. They’ve sung, they’ve been judged, and now they await their fate from the voting public: a pass to next week or a plane ticket home. So, how did these “Idol” hopefuls do on Tuesday night? Who surprised us, who disappointed us and who’s in danger of going home? Let’s take a look at the top 12 women’s report card. (And don’t miss Jim Cantiello’s review of their performances in the Newsroom.) Excellent Lilly Scott : While so many contestants tried to mimic pop stars on Tuesday night, Scott was the most prominent example of what the judges have always wanted: a performance that displays your originality rather than your propensity for imitation. Scott’s acoustic guitar-driven reworking of the Beatles’ “Fixing a Hole” was unexpected and refreshing. We weren’t sure what to make of the platinum-blond 20-year-old before her performance, but now we’re certain she’s bought herself a few more weeks on the “Idol” stage. Michelle Delamor : If no one knew who Delamor was before her performance of Alicia Keys’ “Fallin’, ” they certainly do now. While it was a conventional choice, she executed the song with vocal dexterity. And what’s more, she looked like one of the only singers of the night not suffering from a case of voice-mangling nerves. She’ll have to show she can bring some innovation to her repertoire, but for now, she’s safe. Crystal Bowersox : Simon Cowell may not have liked the dreadlocked single mom’s take on Alanis Morissette’s “Hand in My Pocket” — accusing her of being like thousands of other buskers outside subway stations — but Bowersox made clear she’s a genuine musical talent. Her sweet admittance that she’d prefer to sing originals if only “Idol” rules allowed it showed that the singer has confidence to equal her chops. Satisfactory Paige Miles : She entered the evening with one of the least-recognizable faces, and after her energetic take on of Free’s rock anthem “All Right Now,” she finished off with a new lease on “Idol” life. Nice to meet you, Paige. Now keep it up! Katelyn Epperly : Following on the heels of Scott’s Beatles rearrangement, Epperly’s bluesy rendition of the band’s “Oh! Darling” did not hold up especially well. But it still held up, and she’s in no danger of going home. Will she heed Kara’s advice next week and ditch the lipstick glam for a more natural look? Will the judges spend more time critiquing her voice instead of her getup? Stay tuned. Janell Wheeler : The 24-year-old picked a song that might not have fully showcased her vocal talents but was nonetheless a ton of fun: Heart’s ’80s classic, “What About Love.” That the tune is a karaoke go-to could both be a strike and plus for Wheeler. We’ll look for her to show off her chops in the coming weeks. Siobhan Magnus : The 19-year-old made the top 24 on the strength of her lively, youthful rendition of Stevie Wonder’s “Living for the City,” and then promptly forgot everything the judges told her. Still, her haunting take on Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game” is probably the performance everyone’s still talking about the next day. Is she safe? Yes. Are we curious — and a little afraid — about what she’ll bring next week? You bet. ‘American Idol’ Season 9 Performances Unsatisfactory Katie Stevens : The 17-year-old apparently decided she’d had enough with her teenage years and tried her hand at the sexy classic “Feeling Good.” It was not a good idea. Neither was that outfit, which did indeed make it look like her parents had dressed her up for a fancy-dress party. Stevens needs to add in a dash of teenage rebellion to that persona before she wears out her “Idol” welcome. We’ll still see her next week, but Tuesday night should be a wakeup call for Stevens. Ashley Rodriguez : If we could have guessed what song Rodriguez would bust out on Tuesday, it would have been something by Beyonc

‘American Idol’ Reveals Final Top 24 Contestants

Andrew Garcia, Katie Stevens, Janell Wheeler, John Park and other early front-runners make the cut. By Katie Byrne Janell Wheeler on “American Idol” Wednesday Photo: Fox In an “American Idol” first, seven contenders for the season-nine top 24 were revealed during Tuesday’s how. On Wednesday (February 17), the 17 remaining semifinalists were unveiled. Now, you can reacquaint yourself with those singers before next week’s live shows kick off: Andrew Garcia While Garcia’s story about his parents’ gangbanger past and trying to make a better life for his kid earned him some audition-round screen time, his Hollywood Week performances are what set him apart from the pack. His acoustic reworkings of female-fronted songs — Paula Abdul’s “Straight Up” and Adele’s “Chasing Pavements” — earned him a ride to the top 24. Katie Stevens The precocious 16-year-old caught our attention with her old-soul vocal chops and compelling backstory. She backed up the positive first impression with Stevie Wonder’s “For Once in My Life” and her group performance of Alicia Keys’ “No One.” Her age begs the question: Will she be the next Jordin Sparks and go all the way or Lisa Tucker and flame out? Janell Wheeler Wheeler’s Hollywood Week was filled with ups and downs, between nailing her acoustic take on Estelle’s “American Boy” and choosing the “wrong song” (according to Simon) with Taylor Swift’s “Love Story.” But the judges must have kept her silky-smooth “House of the Rising Sun” audition into account, keeping her around for the semifinals. John Park Guest judge Shania Twain praised Park’s “bottom end” during his audition performance of Gary Moore’s “I’ll Love You More Than You’ll Ever Know.” The 20-year-old college student was able to show off all the other facets of his voice during Hollywood Week, earning a coveted spot in the top 24. Ashley Rodriguez The Berklee College of Music student proved she knows her way around a diva anthem, tackling Alicia Keys’ “If I Ain’t Got You” in her audition, Beyonc

Ellen DeGeneres’ ‘American Idol’ Debut: The Experts Weigh In

New judge receives mostly positive reviews, although one critic complains she said ‘nothing of consequence.’ By Gil Kaufman Simon Cowell, Ellen DeGeneres, Kara DioGuardi and Randy Jackson on Tuesday’s show Photo: Michael Becker/ FOX Taking the place of a beloved character on a long-running TV show is never easy. But on Tuesday night, talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres appeared to easily slide into the memorial Paula Abdul seat on “American Idol” without disrupting the show’s flow, pleasantly surprising many of the “Idol” faithful who spent months fretting over how the Emmy-winning comedian would fit into the mix. After questioning how DeGeneres would do once the show went live, one of the leading “Idol” bloggers, MJ Santilli, who runs mjsbigblog.com , had high marks for the debut on the first night of Hollywood Week. “Ellen’s perfect bon mots from tonight’s show were plucked from hours and hours of footage,” she wrote. “Obviously, [the producers] want to set her in the best light. However, if she can live up to her best sound bites, she’s going to be great.” Santilli praised DeGeneres’ knack for zeroing in on singers’ specific strengths and weaknesses and offering “constructive critiques that are both humor-laced, and pithy. … Ellen’s long experience in front of the camera is definitely helping her.” Veteran “Idol” watcher Michael Slezak of Entertainment Weekly opined, “Ellen DeGeneres may not have years of experience in the music industry, but who cares? Her ability to sit still, be quiet and … actually pay attention to what’s happening on the stage in front of her could set an exciting new precedent for ‘American Idol’ ‘s generally frustrating judges’ panel. Yes indeed, the show is actually about discovering the next generation of music superstars, not watching four nimrods at a table drawing mustaches on each other, misstating pertinent facts about music history and finding new and annoying ways to make the phrase ‘you gave it 100 percent’ their own.” Despite his early fears that DeGeneres would be more focused on tossing out punch lines than critiques, Slezak said she filled the Abdul chair with “a level of dignity and purpose that it had never before experienced.” Over at the Los Angeles Times, critic Ann Powers was less enthusiastic, writing, “Hollywood Week’s big news turned out a fizzle Tuesday night — not because Ellen DeGeneres was bad, or offensive, or much of anything, as a judge, but because she seamlessly fit into the patter and often meaningless ‘critique’ at the judges’ table, the way a bottle of San Pellegrino fits in on a Beverly Hills brunch table. Quietly bubbly and refreshing enough, DeGeneres said nothing of consequence.” Though she was lukewarm, Powers predicted we’ll be thankful for DeGeneres when the show goes live. “Her calm demeanor and deadpan wit have already exerted a calming influence on Randy and Kara, if not Simon (who seemed disconnected tonight), and the judges’-panel schtick that had turned into a bunch of tics last year might actually regain its rhythm,” she said. Not so on the fence was Dave Della Terza, founder of “Idol” spoiler site www.votefortheworst.com . “The first Hollywood episode was a bit underwhelming, because most of it was taken up by Ellen DeGeneres trying to be funny and failing miserably,” he wrote in one of his kinder comments. “At least Kara DioGuardi can finally give away the title of Most Contrived Idol Judge.” MTV’s own “Idol” expert, Jim Cantiello, also overcame his initial fears about DeGeneres, admitting , “Although I initially thought she was a terrible choice (based on her spotlight-hogging star power, her conflict of interest and one astoundingly painful guest judge appearance on ‘So You Think You Can Dance’), I can now say that Ellen DeGeneres is exactly what’s been missing from the judge’s table since the fourth season: passion.” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions.
