McKayla Maroney’s brutally honest, unmoved reaction after winning the silver medal and not the gold in the Olympic individual vault competition earlier this week has spawned a hilarious Internet meme starring the American gymnast. If you missed it, here’s McKayla’s expression: Hey, you can’t blame a girl for her high standards, or for wearing her heart (and look of disappointed apathy) on her sleeve. She just expects better. This demanding philosophy extends to all facets of Maroney’s life, it turns out. According to a new Tumblr created in honor of the exacting vault queen, McKayla is not impressed by the well-endowed U.S. rowing team either … … or the 2011 Royal Wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton … … or the courageous band of Marines raising the flag at Iwo Jima … … or you getting into Washington State. Can you say safety school??!

McKayla Maroney Falters on Vault, Settles for Silver

She’ll always have one of the most memorable moments of the London Olympics, a nearly perfect vault during the gymnastic team finals. But McKayla Maroney will NOT have a Gold Medal to show for her efforts in that individual event, as she fell while landing yesterday and was forced to settle for Silver behind Sandra Raluca Izbasa of Romania. “I didn’t deserve to to win gold if I landed on my butt,” the 16-year old California native told reporters after the competition. “I’m not disappointed about the silver, I’m disappointed about my performance.” Maroney earned scores of 15.866 and 14.300 on her first two vault, respectively. She finished with an overall 15.083, while Izbasa garnered 15.191. “It happens, it’s gymnastics and you can’t be perfect and sometimes things don’t go as you planned,” Maroney told Dan Wetzel of Yahoo! Sports. “I can’t blame it on anything except I screwed up.”

USA Gymnastics Team Wins Gold!

Everyone together now: USA! USA! USA! The women’s gymnastics team took to the mat, the balance beam and the vault today in London and left absolutely no doubt in the minds of spectators or judges: they are the best in the world. The quintet of Jordyn Wieber, Gabrielle Douglas, Alexandra Raisman, Kyla Ross and McKayla Maroney EASILY captured the Gold Medal a few moments ago, destroying second place Russia by five points. The U.S. squad finished with a total of 183.596. The victory ought to be especially sweet for Wieber, who was left in tears on Sunday after she failed to advance to the final round of the individual competition. America last took home the top prize at the 1996 Games in Atlanta. Stars and stripes and perfectly stuck dismounts forever, citizens. Stars and stripes and perfectly stuck dismounts forever.
