Schoolboy Q Promises Black Hippy Album If ‘The Price Is Right’

‘I want some money if we do a Black Hippy album,’ L.A. rapper says jokingly about recording a group project. By Sowmya Krishnamurthy Schoolboy Q Photo: MTV News Over the past few months, Black Hippy, the Los Angeles-based group featuring Kendrick Lamar , Jay Rock, Ab-Soul and Schoolboy Q, has gained massive momentum as a collective to watch in hip-hop. When rapper Schoolboy Q stopped by “RapFix Live” this week, he explained what it will to take to facilitate a Black Hippy group album. Q recounts that initially music wasn’t his focus, but once he caught the performing bug, the group quickly bonded. “Once I gained the passion for music, we all clicked,” he explains. He’s been generating a name for himself as a solo artist and even sold out his own New York City show this week, and the Habits & Contradictions rapper is more than open to recording a collective Black Hippy album, but only if the price is right. “I want some money if we do Black Hippy,” he said, laughing. “We all here for one goal and that’s to prevail in this music, live comfortably and stay happy.” Earlier this year, Schoolboy Q told MTV News that he was considering a joint project with Harlem rapper A$AP Rocky. (The duo joined forces on the standout single “Hands on the Wheel” and on Rocky’s own mixtape Live.Love.A$AP. ) “We’re definitely talkin’ right now. We may give y’all a project, but it all has to be right,” Q said. “A$AP is the homie, man. We kinda live the same lifestyle. I’m a little more gangsta than him, and he’s a little more swagger than me, but we kinda the same sh–, just different places.” What would you want to hear on a Black Hippy album? XXL Freshman Class Includes French Montana, Machine Gun Kelly

Cover of the magazine’s Freshman issue also features Iggy Azalea, the first female MC to make the cut. By Rob Markman The cover of XXL ‘s Freshman issue Photo: XXL Class is back in session, and XXL magazine continues its yearly tradition of cherry-picking new rap talent for their annual Freshman issue. Lupe Fiasco, B.o.B, Wiz Khalifa, J. Cole and Mac Miller have all at one time appeared on the annual cover, and this time out, XXL inducts 10 more artists for the fifth year in a row with their April issue. MTV News’ 2011 Hottest Breakthrough MC, Machine Gun Kelly, stands front and center on the cover alongside his Bad Boy labelmate French Montana. Atlanta hitmaker Future and hook master Roscoe Dash also made the cut along with Detroit’s Danny Brown and Memphis, Tennessee, MC Don Trip. While most of this year’s freshmen have been fixtures on various blog sites and the mixtape circuit, others like Macklemore, Hopsin and Kid Ink may be lesser known, but they’ve more than earned their keep. Macklemore has already sold out countless shows across the country, while Kid Ink and Hopsin have built quite a digital following. Australian-born raptress Iggy Azalea makes history as the first female MC to grace the cover of the Freshman issue. The blond-haired Interscope beauty made waves with her 2011 mixtape Ignorant Art and has since hooked up with T.I. to produce her upcoming debut album The New Classic . Like it does every year, this latest Freshman class has already caused a fuss on the Web, with fans and industry ilk both supporting the list and wondering why their favorite artists didn’t make the cover. FACT OF THE DAY: Common Was A Bookworm At FAMU

Go here to see the original:

Long before battling rappers on wax and cowboys on the screen, Common aka Lonnie Lynn Jr. was attending Florida A&M University on scholarship majoring in Business Administration. Where Presidents Play and Writers Find Their Muse The rapper formerly known as Sense had a strict three-hour-a-day studying regimen, but his mind was still on rapping. In his book One Day It’ll All Make Sense , he wrote that he recorded “A Penny For My Thoughts” while in school by listening to beats that producer NO ID would leave on his outgoing answering machine message. “I’d call in and compose my raps like that.” How did it come out? 25 Artists That Need To Be Heard: Wyldfyer

When producer Wyatt “Wyldfyer” Coleman says he started making beats in “the lab,” he’s not just tossing around industry jargon. Before he brought the world beats like Jay-Z and Nas’s “Black Republicans” or Kendrick Lamar’s “ Kush and Corinthians,” the Philly native was pioneering the mobile studio—sort of. “Black Republicans” “We would be at the Spelman computer lab, me and my homeboy Chris. Spelman always had the better computers because they had the Cosbys funding them,” says the Morehouse and Georgia Tech alumnus of his humble beatmaking beginnings. “Kush and Corinthians” “I didn’t have a laptop so I had Fruity Loops on a 100MB ZIP disk . I had to install it each time. I’d bang away for a few hours and then delete the program from the computer. It was a demo and with the demo you could export the project but you couldn’t save it. So when I made my beats I had to finish ‘em up, bruh. I had to finish the beat or I’d never hear it again. Low budget? I’ve been there.” Thanks to that kind of hustle Wyldfyer now holds the distinction of being the only producer (thus far) to have had Jay-Z and Nas on the same track–twice. He programmed the slaps for Ludacris’ “I Do It For Hip-Hop” featuring Nas and Jay-Z and the aforementioned “Black Republicans.” “God is my manager, bruh,” he says. “Me and NO ID were joking around one time cuz he did “Success” and we were saying ‘we’re the only ones that had Nas/Jay-Z collabos.’  I don’t know what made Luda get Nas and Jay-Z so that was just a blessing.” Currently Wyldfyer is at work submitting tracks for the next Nas album and is sitting on some unreleased Biggie vocals that could make his career if he wanted to.  He submitted two remixes to the Biggie Duets album that weren’t used, but he still has the acapellas. “It didn’t make the album so it would be an unreleased Biggie song that no one’s ever heard,” says. “It’s the slow flow Biggie. It might just be a verse, which is probably why [Puff] didn’t put it out. But I’m not that thirsty to put it out there and ruin my career.” Follow him on Twitter @Wyldfyer

Daniel Radcliffe Recalls ‘Lovely Chat’ With Darren Criss

Actors have ‘Harry Potter’ and ‘How to Succeed in Business’ connections but only just met, Radcliffe tells MTV News. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Daniel Radcliffe Photo: MTV News For a while, it was a running joke between Daniel Radcliffe and Darren Criss that the “Harry Potter” star and “A Very Potter Musical” star had yet to meet, even though the two shared a “Potter” connection, celebrity status and Criss succeeded Radcliffe in the hit Broadway revival of “How to Succeed In Business Without Really Trying.” MTV News recently caught up with Radcliffe, and he revealed that, at long last, the two actors finally met just before Criss took over Radcliffe’s role for a limited run. “We have met. I can confirm, we have met,” Radcliffe said with a smile. “Somebody showed me a very doctored photograph of our meeting; there were no photographs at our meeting, so if that’s what people are interested in, they’re going to be disappointed. “But no, I had a lovely chat with him, talked about the show, I don’t really deign to give advice, but I gave him my number and same with Nick Jonas and said, you know, ‘Contact me if you’ve got anything to ask. I’m always around.’ I passed on a joke to him that Matthew Broderick gave to me which Robert Morse gave to Matthew Broderick,” Radcliffe explained of an inside joke shared by Morse and Broderick, who also played the role of J. Pierrepont Finch in “How to Succeed.” “So that’s become sort of a legacy joke now, which is nice.” Criss will only be in the show for three weeks until he has to return to work on “Glee,” after which Jonas will take over January 24 through July 1. T.I., Dr. Dre ‘Creating Chemistry’ In Latest Collabo

‘Of course we can get together, he got hot beats and I got dope rhymes,’ T.I. tells MTV News. By Rob Markman, with reporting by FLX T.I. poses with Beats by Dr. Dre Photo: Ben Rose/ WireImage No matter your stature in rap, working with Dr. Dre is a pretty big deal. Newcomers like Kendrick Lamar and Slim the Mobster have seen their careers grow considerably after working with the good doctor, while veterans like Busta Rhymes and 50 Cent have marveled at Dre’s in-studio work ethic. For T.I. , however, simply working with the West Coast production king isn’t enough. He wants to develop a tighter musical bond. On Tuesday (December 28), Tip leaked a trailer for the mixtape F— da City Up that showed him and Dre working together in the studio. “Dre was here. He sent for me over to the spot. We really just turned up more than anything else. It was about creating chemistry,” T.I. told MTV News while he was in Atlanta preparing for the New Year’s Day release of the mixtape. This isn’t the first time that the King of the South has collaborated with the California legend. A few years ago, “Topless,” a song that was said to be recorded for Dre’s oft-delayed Detox , leaked onto the Internet. According to T.I., their most recent session was a fruitful one. “Of course we can get together, he got hot beats and I got dope rhymes, so we can always get together and make music,” Tip said. “But for people to feel what we’re sayin’ and for it to sound like a party comin’ through your speakers, you gonna have to create some chemistry. So that’s what we spent more time doin’ than anything else; developing that chemistry.” Related Artists T.I. Dr. Dre
