Marvel Studios Says Iron Man 3 Villain The Mandarin Isn’t Chinese, He’s International

When Entertainment Weekly posted an exclusive photo of actor Ben Kingsley as the Mandarin, the super-villain who rocks Tony Stark’s world in the upcoming Iron Man 3 , it resurrected a thorny question around the virtual office here.   In the Marvel universe, the Mandarin is the son of one of pre-Revolutionary China’s wealthiest men and an English noblewoman, as well as a descendant of Ghengis Khan.  So, why, as Executive Editor Jen Yamato wondered when news broke that Ben Kingsley would play him, did the job go to a half-Indian, half-English actor?   The answer, according to Marvel Studios Kevin Feige , appears near the bottom of the EW post.  As a villain, it turns out, the Mandarin is kind of a mutt. According to EW,  Feige says Marvel “wanted to blur the background” of the Mandarin portrayed in Iron Man 3 . “It’s less about his specific ethnicity than the symbolism of various cultures and iconography that he perverts for his own end,”  Feige explained. ”  As EW further explained:  “From his samurai hair, to his royal robe, to his bin Laden-esque beard, and the AK-47 he keeps at his side, Kingsley’s interpretation is a hodgepodge of various warrior motifs. That way, I guess no single ethnicity, particularly one with a population of 1.3 billion, can be offended by Kingsley’s portrayal or his character’s evil doing. Please feel free to weigh in on the debate. Or, if you just want to look at pretty pictures. USA Today also posted some exclusive shots  from the film. TALKBACK: Which Avengers Superhero Should Get The Next Standalone Spin-Off?

With this week’s release of The Avengers on DVD/Blu-ray and Marvel’s Kevin Feige entertaining all sorts of speculative queries as to the future of the superhero franchise, let’s put it to the people: Which Avenger do you want to see step into the spotlight in a standalone sequel after Thor and Captain America? Marvel Studios already have the next many years’ worth of superhero outings penciled in — Captain America 2 , Thor 2 , Guardians of the Galaxy , Ant-Man , and Avengers 2 — but Feige gave some fans hope for a Hulk adventure in a recent interview with MTV . “Do I think Hulk can carry a movie and be as entertaining as he was in Avengers ? I do believe that. I do believe he absolutely could. We certainly are not even going to attempt that until Avengers 2 ,” said Feige. “So there’s a lot of time to think about it.” Mark Ruffalo’s wry Hulk was an ensemble standout, especially after Ed Norton and Eric Bana’s dour, serious incarnations — perfect candidate for the next standalone, no? (Third time’s the charm?) Then again, could he compete with demand for a full feature dedicated to Scarlett Johansson’s sultry Black Widow? If hers includes a few lengthy drunken hookups with Hawkeye, you know who gets my vote. [ MTV ] Follow Jen Yamato on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .

Adam Sandler Officially Indefensible

“Going into a conversation where you’re defending Adam Sandler is normally not going to work in your favor. I learned this six years ago when I was doing my shift hanging out with Holocaust survivors, and one of the old guys actually turned to me and said, ‘This is the worst thing I’ve ever seen,” and this was coming from a man who was in Auschwitz. There was no way I was going to try to defend the merits of Sandler talking gibberish to a room full of men who lived through one of the darkest periods in all of humanity. If he thought Sandler making a bottle of shampoo battle a bottle of conditioner was bad, then I had to agree.” [ Splitsider ]

The Avengers Will Close the Tribeca Film Festival, Play Host to ‘Local Heroes’

The Tribeca Film Festival has announced The Avengers as the closing-night selection of its 11th annual event, where Joss Whedon’s summer superhero blockbuster will have its New York premiere on April 28 — and for a good cause, according to Marvel and fest organizers. “Honoring the spirit of the Tribeca Film Festival, the screening will allow the opportunity for Marvel’s The Avengers to celebrate everyday heroes from police agencies, fire departments, first responders and various branches of the U.S. military,” reads a statement just over the transom at ML HQ. “These local heroes will have an opportunity to attend the screening and meet the cast.” Marvel Studios’ producer Kevin Feige adds: “We all know and love our iconic Super Heroes, but when it really counts, it’s our real-life heroes who save the world every day by making it a better place for all of us.” Whedon, meanwhile, reacted with customary cheekiness: “Showing at Tribeca is both an honor and a double homecoming for me, who grew up in Manhattan, and for the movie, which wrapped production there. I’m thoroughly psyched to be closing the festival with our intimate little think-piece.” More to come at Movieline as Tribeca gets underway next month. Follow S.T. VanAirsdale on Twitter .
