The Oscar-Award winning actor graces the cover of October’s issue of GQ magazine and talks that talk about who influences him as an actor, who he’d want to play him in a biopic and offers some words of wisdom to live by. Check out a few excerpts from the interview below: Is there an actor who has influenced you? There’s a scene in The Godfather II. De Niro’s in a theater. And he’s looking back. It’s just a look. I don’t think I’ve ever imitated another actor, but there’s nothing wrong with learning from them. Do you have any code you live by? I read from the Bible every day, and I read my Daily Word. I read something great yesterday. It said, “Don’t aspire to make a living. Aspire to make a difference.” We interrupt this interview for a moment of silence to marvel at this masterpiece of a man… Ok. As you were…. In some ways, you’re a cipher. There’s not much you put out there. But that’s not my job to put stuff out there. Sidney Poitier told me this years ago: “If they see you for free all week, they won’t pay to see you on the weekend, because they feel like they’ve seen you. If you walk by the magazine section in the supermarket and they’ve known you all their life, there’s no mystery. They can’t take the ride.” My professional work is being a better actor. I don’t know how to be a celebrity. When the Denzel biopic is made, what would an actor need to have in his performance to make you say, “He got me”? That suggests I know what it is, and I don’t want to know what it is. That’s part of the mystery. It is what it is. I don’t go, “I gotta make sure I put some of that Denzel Washington-ism in the movie.” I don’t want tricks. I don’t want to lose my mojo. This man’s swag is truly timeless. Panera Bread Franchise Settles Discrimination Suit For $76K Looks like that shady Covelli Enterprises is going to pay up for telling this young brotha that he had to be a cook so “no blacks were in public view”… Via ABC News: An Ohio franchisee who runs several western Pennsylvania Panera Bread stores has agreed to pay more than $76,000 to settle discrimination claims by current and former black employees. Chief U.S. District Judge Gary Lancaster on Monday told attorneys for Guy Vines, the black worker, and the company he sued in January, Warren, Ohio-based Covelli Enterprises, to advertise the settlement in newspapers in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Florida, Kentucky and West Virginia, where Covelli operates Panera stores. Vines sued claiming he was denied promotions and made to work in the kitchen because company owner Sam Covelli didn’t want black employees in areas where the public was served. About 200 to 300 black workers may be entitled to money, Vines’ attorney, Samuel Cordes told the judge. According to online court records, Vines will receive $10,000 for being the lead plaintiff and Cordes will receive $66,000 in legal fees. In addition, Covelli must pay a yet-to-be determined amount based on how many current and former employees respond to the advertisements and file claims. Those workers will get 70 cents an hour for each hour they worked in excess of one year at any of Covelli’s Panera’s stores. That’s based upon how much money Covelli’s workers stood to gain had they been promoted after their first year. The settlement covers all current or former black employees who worked for Covelli for at least a year between Jan. 11, 2008 and Jan. 11, 2012 — the day Vines filed his lawsuit. Vines contends he was hired in November 2009 and quit in August 2011 over his alleged mistreatment. Cordes, who represented both men, said in Vines’ lawsuit that “African Americans were routinely assigned to jobs either in the back of the store washing dishes or doing food preparation so customers would not see them” and that top Covelli managers dictated that “people who are ‘Black, Fat, and/or ugly’ should never be permitted to work the cash registers.” SMH. Sounds like this azzholes need to cough up more than $76K to us!
Dear Bossip , I have been with a man for over 9 years. I just recently found out that he was fooling around on me and impregnated another woman. We have 2 kids together and this child is the same age as our youngest child. When confronting the other woman it was obvious that she was nothing but a creep. She even admits to a night of drunk sex that resulted in a baby. When asked what the extent was of my man and the child’s relationship, she said he is not present and that she wants nothing to do with him, and she’s better off without him. When I asked my man he broke down and cried and admitted to sleeping with the girl. He tells me that the baby may or may not be his because come to find out she told him it was a possibility. He claims that he tried to tell me before, but was so afraid to tell me and he kept it a secret in fear that I may leave him. I again called the woman who now changes up her story and tells me a whole different account of the relationship, but it is in sync with his story. She has moved on, has other children, but my feelings are hurt because I love this man and until that point I thought we were happy. He has changed his ways. He is continuously apologizing and trying to stay on my good side. What do I do? I love this man and we have a home, cars, children, and life together. If it is his child then why would he not want to be actively involved in his own child’s life? Your children are his brother or sister. Arson Suspected In Missouri Mosque Burning What’s with all these attacks on places of worship ? On July 4th, Joplin, Missouri’s Islamic Center — the city’s only mosque — suffered roof damage after an unidentified man set it on fire by tossing a burning object onto the building. On Monday, the mosque burned again — but this time, the damage was far more extensive. Fire Chief Bill Dunn of neighboring Carl Junction described it as a “complete loss.” The FBI has dispatched some 50 agents to investigate the fire, which special agent Michael Kaste, head of the Kansas City FBI office, characterized as “suspicious.” Some fifty families are served by the mosque, and the loss of their place of worship during the holy month of Ramadan hit especially hard. “It’s unbelievable,” said congregant Omar Ahmed. “It’s a house of worship. It’s a place of God.” The Islamic Center’s leader, Imam Lahmuddin, expressed defiance in the face of hardship. “This should not stop us from serving God,” he told the Joplin Globe. “We still have to fulfill our obligation.” Lahmuddin said mosque members view the fire as “a test from God.” The FBI and the ATF are offering a $15,000 reward to anyone with information leading to the arrest of the arsonist who set last month’s fire — a reward that will be extended to include the latest incident, should it be considered deliberate. The Council on American-Islamic Relations is offering its own $10,000 reward for information pertaining to the most recent fire. Well at least no one was hurt. Ice-T Says Rush Limbaugh Is A Racist Piece Of Sh*t We agree with Ice on all of the above regarding your boy Rush: Ice-T has some major beef with Rush Limbaugh, after the radio host marveled that he knew the meaning of the word “tyranny” on Tuesday. Ice-T recently defended gun ownership in an interview on London news, calling the right to bear arms “the last form of defense against tyranny.” Limbaugh praised his stance on the issue, but found his use of the word “tyranny” with a British “sophisticate” especially remarkable. “He knew the word ‘tyranny,’” Limbaugh said. “And he knows that tyranny comes from government representatives. Double impressive.” Ice-T did not take kindly to his remarks. “Rush Limbaugh said he was impressed I knew the word ‘tyranny’… He’s a racist piece of sh–,” he tweeted. Later, he responded to some of the replies, saying “Hahah some of y’all are saying Limbaugh is not racist?? Check this” and linked to an article called “Top 10 Racist Limbaugh Quotes.” He also directed fans of Limbaugh and Bill O’Reilly to “UNFOLLOW now.” Via Huffington Post
Black Workers File Charges Over Racial Discrimination At Siemens Plant This made our blood boil . We had to share it with you. Welder Solomon Daniels had just grabbed his work clothes from his locker at the Siemens plant near Trenton when, he said, he saw the noose out of the corner of his eye, swinging from the shower curtain rod. “I was more or less terrified,” said Daniels, 48, an African American man who lives in Burlington. Horrified by the noose, which evokes lynchings, Daniels looked twice to make sure, then called a coworker into the locker room to witness it. He took pictures. That was Jan. 27. On Friday, Daniels and two other African American employees at Siemens Demag Delaval Turbomachinery Inc. talked to reporters about what they called a factory floor culture of racism and harassment in which African Americans couldn’t get promoted and complaints to the human resources department went nowhere. Represented by lawyer Brian K. Wiley in North Wales, the men have filed complaints with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the New Jersey Division of Civil Rights. “When I first started there, the n-word was like your first name,” said Barry Murphy, 64, of Willingboro. Employed at Siemens since 1966, Murphy, a machinist, wept Friday, saying he came forward so younger black workers wouldn’t have to experience the discrimination he faced. He said there hasn’t been an African American supervisor since the 1980s. “The placement of a noose in a Siemens facility is a deplorable, aggressive act,” Siemens said in a statement, adding that it had hired outside investigators to look into the situation at its plant in Hamilton Township. “Siemens condemns such behavior in the strongest terms,” the statement continued. Siemens said it retrained all personnel in company policies against harassment and discrimination and enclosed copies of the policies in employees’ paychecks. However, the company said that, after reviewing surveillance video and interviewing employees, it could not determine who hung the noose. Daniels said he was asked whether he himself had hung it. “I think that [question] is normal where the work environment is primarily white,” he said. “At the same time, it was hurtful.” He said he told officials he would be willing to take a polygraph test. For machinist Eddie Clarke, 48, of Hatfield, the harassment went beyond the symbolic and annoying to physically threatening. On Feb. 21, 2010, he said, he was coming around the corner, heading toward his tool cabinet, when a metal shank sliced through his pant legs and cut his leg. “I had to pull the metal from my leg,” Clarke wrote in a sworn affidavit. Someone had rigged a metal shank to his tool cabinet in an area where he was the only person working. At the news conference, Clarke said that before the incident he had complained to top company officials about harassment. His supervisor warned him to stop complaining or he’d be the victim of “friendly fire,” Clarke said. All three men, who are still employed, said they loved their jobs but feared for their safety at work. “We have been in contact with federal, state and local authorities,” said Siemens spokeswoman Camille Johnston. She declined to say whether the supervisor had been disciplined. “The company is responding to the EEOC charges as appropriate.” SMH. This is just unacceptable. Screenwriter Releases Audio Of Mel Gibson Expletive Filled Tirade We all knew this guy was off his effin’ rocker, but this isht right chere is cray… Screenwriter Joe Eszterhas says he and his family were house guests of Mel Gibson in Costa Rica last December when the ‘Mad Max’ star went off on a blistering tirade, recorded on an iPhone by Eszterhas ‘ 15-year-old son Nick. Eszterhas provided the audio recording to industry website The Wrap because: “Gibson called me a liar. And I also have some reason to believe he’s creating a PR blitz questioning my truthfulness.” Eszterhas, who wrote the blockbuster “Basic Instinct,” was writing a screenplay for Gibson for a film called “The Maccabees.” The fact that the screenplay had not been completed seems to be one of the things that set Gibson off. “Why don’t I have a first draft of ‘The Maccabees’? What the f**k have you been doing?” he can be heard bellowing on the recording on The Wrap’s website. And it gets worse. Gibson, 56, also screams about Oksana Grigorieva, his ex-girlfriend and mother of his young daughter. “I am earning money for a filthy little c**ksucker who takes advantage of me!” Gibson rants. Eszterhas wrote a scathing, nine-page letter to Gibson in which he accused the actor of “hating Jews” and using “The Maccabees” film project – a story about Jewish heroism — “in an attempt to deflect continuing charges of anti-Semitism which have dogged you, charges which have crippled your career.” “I’ve come to the conclusion that the reason you won’t make ‘The Maccabees’ is the ugliest possible one. You hate Jews,” Eszterhas wrote. “The Maccabees” project was put on hold by Warner Bros. studio, in part due to Eszterhas’ script, The Wrap reported. Gibson has called several of Eszterhas’ assertions “fabrications,” and may sue the writer. The actor is looking into whether Costa Rican laws were violated when he was secretly taped in his home, and if his privacy was violated by the release of the audio, TMZ reports. “The bottom line is it shows to me he badly needs help,” Eszterhas told TheWrap. “My interest isn’t to damage him with this tape but to prevent damage being done to others…. I strongly believe that unless he seeks and receives some kind of psychiatric help, someone is going to get hurt.” Gibson has a long history making racist and anti-Semitic remarks. After a DUI arrest, Gibson exploded that “Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world.” In a voice mail to Grigorieva he said she would be to blame if she were to be “raped by a pack of n**gers.” Grigorieva was granted a restraining order during their custody battle over daughter Lucia. You hurled your cellphone into a wall and started to scream, ‘I look so f**king old! I look horrible! That f**king whore is destroying me! She’s taking my looks! I hate her! She’s destroying my life!’ “You jumped up, screaming full-throated: ‘Look at me!! F**king look at me! Look how terrible I look! Answer me, God! Why did you turn your back on me!? F**k you!
