‘Dark Knight Rises’ Vocals, ‘Star Trek’ Villain Spark Nerdy Debates

‘Talk Nerdy to Me’ returns with an all-new episode about Bane’s hard-to-decipher voice, ‘Star Trek 2’ and the MTV Movie Brawl 2012 tournament. By Josh Wigler Benedict Cumberbatch Photo: Getty Images Welcome to 2012, fellow nerds! With return trips to Middle-earth and Gotham City in the cards, not to mention sightings of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and Ridley Scott ‘s return to sci-fi on the horizon, the coming months are sure to usher in one of the most geek-friendly years of all time. It’s only appropriate then that “Talk Nerdy to Me” (the MTV News one-stop shop for all things comic books, movies and television) rises to the size and stature of the new year. That means more Hulk hands, light-sabers and action figures, more punch-out sound effects and — most importantly — more heated nerdy debate to come all throughout 2012 … and it all starts now! Watch the embedded video for the latest episode of “Talk Nerdy to Me,” and read on for a synopsis of what we discussed this week on the show! The Bane Problem “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” has been kicking ass and taking names at the box office for weeks now, thanks in no small part to the “Dark Knight Rises” prologue attached to IMAX prints of the Tom Cruise action vehicle. Fans are raving about the first look at Christopher Nolan’s last Batman movie, except for one teensy, tiny problem: Bane’s voice . The Caped Crusader’s newest nemesis’ mask-muffled muttering has left some viewers scratching their heads, and Nolan’s apparent insistence on not improving the clarity of Bane’s dialogue has only led to further bewilderment. But should fans really be so worried about the so-called “Bane problem,” or is it all much ado about nothing? Find out what Team Nerdy thinks in this week’s episode. “Sherlock” Goes to Space Between playing Britain’s greatest detective and Middle-earth’s most fearsome dragon, how many more iconic roles does Benedict Cumberbatch need to plop on his plate? Why not give him one more: The “Sherlock” and “War Horse” actor is beaming aboard J.J. Abrams’ “Star Trek 2” as the film’s lead villain, ending a long search that’s seen actors Benicio del Toro and Edgar Ramirez circling the role. But the question remains: Who is Cumberbatch playing? “Nerdy’s” Brian Phares expects a new character, while the rest of the team feels like screaming “KHAAAAAAAN!” Who do you think Cumberbatch is playing? The Brawl for It All Finally, nothing like a shameless plug to start the new year right! Team Nerdy took some time to talk about MTV Movie Brawl 2012 , our current tournament to decide which movie you guys are most excited to see in the coming year. Some flicks like “Hunger Games” and “Breaking Dawn” are dominating as expected, but others — namely “The Dark Knight Rises,” “Skyfall” and “The Amazing Spider-Man” — are underperforming, so much so that some so-called “shoo-ins” might not even make it into the March Madness-style bracket kicking off on Monday. We already put the question to “Avengers” and “Spider-Man” fans , but it bears repeating to the Batman and Bond crowd: Where are you guys? Time’s running out! Bane In ‘Dark Knight Rises’: ‘Can You Hear Me Now?’

Has Christopher Nolan cleaned up the prologue’s soundtrack? Let’s discuss in The Weekly Rising . By Kevin P. Sullivan Tom Hardy as Bane in “The Dark Knight Rises” Photo: Warner Bros As highly anticipated as “The Dark Knight Rises” is, an unfortunate parenthetical has followed most praise of the six-minute prologue and the first theatrical trailer. Tom Hardy ‘s voice became the hot topic of Batman conversations as soon as critics saw the first minutes of the film, which focus heavily on the masked villain Bane. Fans complained, too, wishing they could comprehend more from a character they wanted to like so much, but almost every complaint came with a caveat tacked on: “I’m sure Nolan will fix it.” Then, at the height of discussion, an unnamed source “close to the movie” told The Hollywood Reporter that Nolan had no intentions of completely reworking Bane’s voice, insisting he would only make slight changes to the sound mix. Now, Collider has the testimony of a source that claims Warner Bros. sent a new soundtrack for the prologue still attached to select IMAX showings of “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol,” making Bane’s dialogue “40 to 50 percent” clearer. Here is the source’s full account: “A friend of mine who is an IMAX projectionist told me they received a new soundtrack for the ‘Dark Knight Rises’ prologue. He said it’s now a combo soundtrack with ‘Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol,’ but the cool thing about this is that they’ve cleaned up the dialogue. They’ve gone in and lowered the background noise of the plane and other things, thus making Bane’s dialogue clearer and more understandable. He asked some people after they left the movie if they could understand Bane and they all said they had no issue understanding him, and were excited for the movie.” Warner Bros. told The New York Times ‘ Dave Itzkoff that there was “no truth” to the rumors, but Collider followed up its initial report with a letter purportedly from IMAX sent to its projectionists. The letter instructs them on how to dub the combined tracks properly and perfectly aligns with the original report. This is certainly looking like the tweak we’ve expected from Nolan since The Hollywood Reporter article. If the director is adamant about keeping the gargled effect on Bane’s voice and encouraging the audience to participate in the film more, this is the change that needed to be made. Regardless of whether you’re part of the camp that insists the voice is comprehendible, the change, however slight it may be, was needed. Are you looking forward to a cleaned-up Bane? Let me know at @KPSull, and I’ll discuss some of your responses over at Splash Page on Wednesday. Anne Hathaway Reveals Catwoman’s Glam Hollywood Role Model: Hedy Lamarr

In a new, spoiler-ish Dark Knight Rises piece over at Hero Complex, Anne Hathaway manages to stoke fanboy flames with talk of her Catwoman ‘s sleek gadgetry while invoking the name of screen siren (and Movieline heroine ) Hedy Lamarr. Now that’s good media management. See if her four-quadrant Catwoman chat hits you in all the right places, too. First, the stuff to get your inner techie fanboy a-tingling. “I love the costume because everything has a purpose,” Hathaway says of her costume, which is described as including razor-tipped stilettos and goggles that “flip up and resemble feline ears.” “Nothing is in place for fantasy’s sake.” Well, I wouldn’t say that . [ GALLERY: Catwoman’s look through the decades — who wore it best? ] And then, something for the ladies, the lovers of ladies, and anyone enamored of old school Hollywood glamour — a touch of the noir-ish femme fatale, perhaps, as channeled via the influence of a woman who influenced the original Catwoman, the inimitable Hedy Lamarr: “I know this sounds odd, but her breathing is extraordinary. She takes these long, deep, languid breaths and exhales slowly. There’s a shot of her in [the 1933 film] ‘Ecstasy’ exhaling a cigarette and I took probably five breaths during her one exhale. So I started working on my breathing a lot.” So far, so good if you ask me. I want a Catwoman who’s equal parts high tech and snarlingly seductive, forward-thinking without losing the slink of the Catwomen who’ve come before. Christian Bale Roughed Up In China

‘Dark Knight Rises’ actor barred from visiting quarantined activist. By Jeremy Gordon Christian Bale Photo: ChinaFotoPress Christian Bale intended to raise awareness about the plight of human-rights activist Chen Guangcheng — who has been under a form of house arrest since 2010 — when he invited a CNN camera crew on a trip to China. “The Dark Knight Rises” star was there to visit the quarantined Chen when local guards rebuffed his attempt to enter the Chinese dissident’s village, forcing the entire party off the premises. Chen has been under house arrest along with his family since his release from jail in September 2010. After speaking out against China’s forced abortion policy, he was imprisoned in 2006 on charges of damaging property and disrupting traffic in a protest. Chen’s supporters maintained that the blind, self-taught lawyer was detained on false charges, but he served the full four years of his sentence. A CNN video captured a plainclothes guard pushing Bale around as he and the crew attempted to enter the tiny village in eastern China. Eventually, they were surrounded and corralled back to the main road. As the actor and the camera crew left the area, the guards got in a gray minivan and began to follow them. Inside the CNN car, Bale said, “I don’t feel brave doing this. The local people who stand up to authorities [and] insist on visiting Chen and his family are getting beaten up for it, and to my understanding, getting detained for it. I want to support what they’re doing.” Bale first learned of Chen’s plight while filming “The Flowers of War,” a drama set during the Nanking Massacre. Despite pleas from U.S. officials for Chen’s freedom, China’s state media has given the story little coverage. Chinese security chased Bale and CNN for more than a half hour before giving up, according to the cable news outlet. On the way back to Beijing, Bale speculated to CNN about whether he would be banned from entering the country, even as “The Flowers of War” becomes China’s official entry at the 2012 Academy Awards. “Really, what else can I do to help Chen?” he asked. The Dark Knight Rises Poster: The Legend Ends?

Warner Bros. has come out with a new poster for The Dark Knight Rises , and it does not bode well for a certain Caped Crusader. Featuring Tom Hardy’s Bane standing over a fallen Batman mask, along with cracks in the iconic logo, the image teases this July 2012 blockbuster, which reportedly is set eight years after events that concluded the previous installment. Director Christopher Nolan – who, along with Christian Bale, will bow out of the franchise after their third film together – has said the opening of The Dark Knight Rises “takes your breath away.” We don’t doubt it. Check out the official Dark Knight Rises trailer now and let the countdown to next summer begin!

Christopher Nolan Unveils ‘Dark Knight Rises’ Prologue

A lucky audience got a glimpse at director’s nearly seven-minute clip, in which Bane proves as fearsome as Batman fans have hoped. By Kara Warner “The Dark Knight Rises” movie poster Photo: Warner Bros. Pictures LOS ANGELES — If you happened to be in or around the IMAX theater at Universal City Walk Thursday night, there’s a decent chance you may have been privy to the collective fangasm (some shock and awe) generated by the lucky audience invited to screen the prologue for Christopher Nolan’s third Batman movie, “The Dark Knight Rises.” Nolan was on hand himself to introduce the nearly seven-minute clip, which he described as, basically, the opening sequence, with a few out-of-order bonus shots thrown in at the end. The director also emphasized his love for IMAX technology, explaining that even though it was probably developed before he was born, it is “far and away the best imaging format created,” and it’s one that allows fans to experience the grandeur of old Hollywood films, which Nolan said is “slowly being chipped away.” At the special screening, he encouraged fans to seek out official IMAX screens for a fully immersive experience when “Rises” opens next summer, but not to inquire about the plot of the film. “I’ve barely started to edit, so don’t ask me about the ending,” he joked just before the lights in the theater dimmed. In the interest of preserving the mystery of the movie, Warner Bros. politely asked journalists in attendance to refrain from giving blow-by-blow reactions, a request MTV News is happy to heed. What we can say is that the action in the opening sequence occurs mostly on a plane and that it features several high-flying, mind-blowing special effects of the practical, not the CG, variety. The sequence seems to pick up right where “The Dark Knight” leaves off — Gotham District Attorney Harvey Dent’s funeral — and, most important, features one of the more memorable character introductions we’ve seen of late as viewers got the first look at Tom Hardy in action as Bane, complete with creepy leather face mask. There are government agents, military personnel and civilians involved in the setup, but it’s all eyes on Bane. And if what we see him say and do in the first few minutes is representative of his villainous arc in the full-length feature, it’s clear that Nolan is venturing into more ominous territory in “Rises.” Where Heath Ledger’s unforgettable Joker was dark, twisted and almost whimsically crazy, Hardy’s Bane is a horrific, maniacal force. That’s apparent whenever the camera locks onto his eyes or when he speaks for the first time, revealing a garbled, aggressive German accent. Bane will no doubt prove a formidable force to be reckoned with, and we can’t help but anticipate his first meeting with Batman. Speaking of Batman, the caped crusader, played of course by Christian Bale, makes his first appearance in a few quick clips at the very end, along with new additions Catwoman/Selina Kyle (Anne Hathaway) and cop John Blake (Joseph Gordon-Levitt). ‘Dark Knight Rises’ Prologue Debate Gets ‘Nerdy’

In this week’s ‘Talk Nerdy to Me,’ the team tackles the Batman prologue, the latest ‘Ender’s Game’ casting and more. By Josh Wigler Photo: Warner Bros. Pictures After a weeklong hiatus, “Talk Nerdy to Me” is back in action with all of your comic book, movie and TV needs. From today’s official announcement of the “Dark Knight Rises” prologue to a special cameo from Daniel Day-Lewis’ Abraham Lincoln beard, this week’s “Talk Nerdy” has it all. Keep reading for a taste of what you’ll see this week, and watch the episode in the video below! “Dark Knight” Prologue Confirmed Now that the news is official, the Talk Nerdy team is left wondering what Christopher Nolan’s “Dark Knight Rises” prologue might entail. Are we in store for a “Batman Begins”-inspired montage? Might we see the death of a popular character from the Caped Crusader’s supporting cast? We floated a few of our own theories, however ridiculous, in this week’s episode. “Ender’s” Cast The wheels are most certainly in motion for “Ender’s Game,” director Gavin Hood’s big-screen adaptation of the beloved Orson Scott Card novel. “Hugo” star Asa Butterfield has been confirmed to play the titular Ender, and there are talks of “True Grit” actress Hailee Steinfeld and the legendary Harrison Ford joining the cast as well. Great actors, to be sure, but are they the right ones for the project? Find out what Nerdy’s Brian Phares thinks about the upcoming project. The “Game of Thrones” Blu’s When you play the “Game of Thrones,” you win or you die. But when it comes to the HBO fantasy show’s upcoming Blu-ray collection, it looks like we’re all going to win. The Blu-ray was announced earlier this week, and the details are bound to have fans of the franchise foaming at the mouth. The Nerdy team geeked out over the upcoming collection, especially the announced “Creating the Dothraki Language” feature. Spider-Leak, Spider-Leak The weekend box office is dry in terms of new wide releases, so we recommend you just go ahead and see “The Muppets” again. It’s that good! In lieu of our normal box-office report, this week’s Talk Nerdy focused on the infamous “Amazing Spider-Man” Lizard leak from earlier in the week. Needless to say, the team was not impressed.
