Addiction, Consequence, Redemption: Chris Nolan & Co. Talk ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ On Blu-Ray

“Why do we fall, Bruce? So we can learn to pick ourselves up.” Was The Dark Knight Rises the finale that Batman deserved and needed? On the new TDKR DVD/Blu-ray release (on shelves today), Christopher Nolan and his collaborators wax poetic about their Batman saga and shed light on what made Bruce Wayne’s rise, fall, and redemption such compelling material. “Every film has to be driven by a story,” says Nolan in the bonus feature “The Journey of Bruce Wayne” in which he offers up his personal take on the Batman mythos along with brother/screenwriter Jonathan Nolan, David S. Goyer, Christian Bale, and Hans Zimmer. “And story is driven by people, by characters, by the human face. What we recognize in it, what we’re attracted to, what we hope for, for that character — that relatability — is what drew me to Bruce Wayne’s story.” Nolan and his co-writers speak of Batman/Bruce Wayne in clinical terms: He’s depressed, addicted, and traumatized as the events of Batman Begins and moreso The Dark Knight give way to the confrontations of The Dark Knight Rises . “We tried to treat Batman – the Batman costume, the Batman personality — as if it were an addiction,” said Goyer. “He’s addicted to it; he’s addicted to the anger, that he’s addicted to the violence, that he’s addicted to the suit. It’s all he really lives for, how he was able to channel his anger and his energy is by being Batman and as long as there was something to push against he had a reason for existing, and now that the streets are relatively crime free he doesn’t have anything to push against, so he doesn’t have a purpose.” Bale puts it another way: “He’s not the most healthy of individuals.” The imperative for Nolan & Co.’s game-changing approach to superhero stories was, according to Jonathan Nolan, “being conscious of never straying too far from these being films about a man. There’s a city, there’s a rogue’s gallery, there are some amazing, compelling characters — but it’s really the story of a guy who decided to do something very unconventional, illegal, dangerous, out of a somewhat broken sense of righteousness and justice.” Behind-the-scenes looks abound on Warner Bros.’ comprehensive home video release, from a franchise-spanning Batmobile featurette to the plethora of making-of pieces that peel back the layers on the technical orchestration that went into TDKR ‘s explosive, epic production. But if you want to get to the heart of Nolan’s Batman — and the series that, starting with Batman Begins , ushered in a new era for the Caped Crusader and comic book movies for cinephiles and fanboys alike – this is the must-watch of the batch. As much as the bombast and drama of TDKR makes for a standalone watch, it was intended to fulfill a specific purpose: To question all that came before, and round out the complete three-film journey of its hero. “For the ending of The Dark Knight to have the validity of gravity it should have,” says Nolan, “it is important to have The Dark Knight Rises .” Read more on The Dark Knight Rises , on DVD/Blu-ray today. Holy Crossover! Will DC Introduce Joseph Gordon-Levitt As Batman In Superman Movie?

Sitting through the interminable credits of a special-effects laden comic-book superhero movie is not my idea of fun, but after reading Drew McWeeny’s HitFix post on Joseph Gordon-Levitt donning the Batsuit, I’m starting my glute exercises early in preparation for Warner Bros. and DC Comics June 2013 release of Man of Steel .  The blogger explores persistent rumors that, as The Dark Knight Rises hinted,  Gordon-Levitt will inherit the cowl from Christian Bale and that Warner may introduce him in Zack Snyder’s reboot of the Superman franchise, Man of Steel , as a way of teasing JG-L’s  eventual appearance in the Justice League movie, set for 2015.  The idea makes plenty of sense, especially since TDKR mastermind Christopher Nolan is credited as a producer and a writer on Man of Steel . McWeeny even envisions a smart scene in which the two caped crusaders could be introduced:  “How crazy do you think fans would go if Superman were to take to the skies at the end of Man Of Steel , finally ready to fully accept his role as mankind’s most powerful protector, only to have the closing credits interrupted when something catches his attention and he swoops down out of that sky, landing on a rooftop where Jim Gordon stands next to the Bat-Signal, interrupting just as the new Batman arrives for a chat about Gotham’s latest problem?” Or maybe Supes and Bats could just grab some shawarma. A “Lil Positivity”: Families Of “Dark Knight” Colorado Shooting Victims Split $5 Million In Charitable Donations!

The Dark Knight Rises…and raises mula! Families Of Batman Theater Shooting Victims’ Will Split $5 Million According to TMZ reports : The families of the 12 people killed in the Aurora shooting massacre — along with several people who suffered permanent injuries in the attack — will split the majority of the $5 million in donations raised to assist the victims of the attack. A mediator tasked with dividing the funds has announced the above-mentioned people will split 70% of the funds — roughly $200k each. The mediator says the rest of the cash will go to people who suffered physical injuries — the more severe the injury, the more money they will receive. Aside from the 12 people killed, 58 people were wounded in the July 20 shooting in Aurora, CO. The mediator says … due to limited funds, none of the money will go toward people who did not require overnight hospitalization … and the cash will NOT be used to aid theater-goers who were physically unharmed, but claim they suffer from mental trauma. As for the shooter James Holmes, he’s still in custody facing murder charges. This money will certainly not make up for lost family members and friends, but at least it will help the folks that need it to help pay hospital bills and costs associated with the tragedy.

The Sean Penn , Ryan Gosling , Josh Brolin starrer was initially set for an early September release, but the tragedy in Aurora, CO at a The Dark Knight Rises showing at a multiplex threw the title into a tailspin. The Ruben-Fleischer-directed film about the L.A. police department’s war against organized crime in the ’40s and ’50s. Gangster Squad is now set for a January release. The original trailer, which played some TDKR showings, depicted a scene in which mobsters open fire at a crowd of moviegoers. The scene was reportedly pivotal to the feature’s plot and producers delayed the pic to re-work film and eliminate the possibility of touching a raw nerve. The trailer opens within explosion and a few shoot-outs. The period piece appears to have gangster Sean Penn up against cop Ryan Gosling, but is there a woman they both share? Who will ultimately rule L.A.? Warner Bros. is now planning a roll out on January 11th. The film also stars Emma Stone, Michael Pena, Anthony Mackie, Nick Nolte and James Carpinello.
