Another day, another person using a “monkey” reference and acting like they didn’t know it was racially offensive. via Huffington Following cries of racism, South Korea’s largest tobacco company is pulling an advertisement for its new “This Africa” cigarettes. The KT&G ads featuring a monkey dressed as a human were launched a month ago to promote the brand’s new “This Africa” cigarettes, according to the Agence France-Presse. The ads to promote cigarettes dried and roasted in “traditional” African style showed monkeys dressed as humans, tagged with the slogan “Africa is coming!” Zambian Mirriam Simasiku, an African woman living in Seoul, told the Korea Times she found the ads extremely offensive. “According to those images, Africans are just a bunch of uneducated monkeys,” she told the publication. “We as Africans are still a minority against a multitude of pure Koreans with no law to protect us. By the way, it is named This Africa, which is inappropriate since no one thought of making any connection.” These companies are getting out of control with this “Oh, we didn’t know” mess. I don’t really get the hipster sports theme, personally, I prefer supermodel shoots to have more of a lingerie in bed theme. But hey, different strokes for different folks I guess. Very sad news today out of South Korea: A 39-year old man jumped to his death on Wednesday from the 11th floor of a building in the city of Busan. He landed on a five-year old girl who was walking with by with her parents on the street below and ended up killing her, as authorities confirm she died hours later from brain damage. The identity of both the man and the toddler are being withheld, while no one knows the reason he committed suicide. There was no note left at the scene or anywhere else. South Korea, however, has highest per capita rate of suicide in the world.
In a new interview, 19-year-old aspiring model Ali Lohan (short for Aliana) speaks out about her own career prospects, and also her maligned older sibling. The younger Lohan, who recently signed on with Wilhelmina Models and posed for Elle Korea, says “I would like to be known as my own person.” “I don’t need to ride on any coattails. I just want to make my mark myself.” The coattails of Lindsay Lohan are definitely not worth riding on these days, but regardless, she adds, “I definitely have to prove myself in my career.” Ali Lohan only had glowing words to say about her family, calling big sis LiLo, 26, a “good roommate,” and her mother, Dina Lohan “the best mom ever.” Clearly she has a lot to learn, but she’s only 19. So Robert Downey Jr is at the World Premiere of Iron Man 3 and they Koreans decided to try to relate to him the one way they know how – with Gangnam Style and he went along with it, in what is a weird fucking video, that I think is bridging the gap between the West and Korea, one horrible, internet sensation at a time. Not that North Korea is allowed internet….but maybe a spy will inform them that through dance, it will all be ok. Unless they find the whole thing racist and mocking their culture, which is kinda what I think is happening here.
Stevie Johnson is very sorry, New England Patriots fans. He doesn’t really want you to perish via a nuclear explosion. With North Korea claiming to be building up its nuclear arsenal, the Buffalo Bills wide receiver Tweeted today: “War is nothing to be played with. After receiving a few dozen hundred negative responses across the Internet, Johnson then took to Twitter again and offered a mea culpa: “PatsFans i lo…like yall also. ask any1 in my fam. ive said TheBoro is my fav place to play-bkuz you Pats fans are Live! BUT not for long.” We’re not sure what that means, but this is Stevie Johnson. The guy blamed God in 2010 for a dropped touchdown pass.
