He made his television debut on MTV’s Super Sweet 16 with a lavish, over-the-top celebration with a surprise performance by Kanye West. Since then, Aaron has been in and out of the media’s watchful eye with three noteworthy incidents: semi-nude photo leaks, an alleged sextape and most recently his debut onto the music scene. L.A. Last month, L.A. Reid announced his departure as chairman of Island Def Jam Records to secure a judging gig for the U.S. edition of Simon Cowell’s reality singing competition ‘The X Factor,’ which is scheduled to premiere in September. Maybe the letters from Nas and Shyne finally got to him but Reid will now be searching for new talent instead of managing the demands of current acts. The BoomBox.com caught up with Reid to find out why he left behind a gig behind a desk to wade through scores of wannabees looking for their big break. Why did you decide to leave Def Jam to join ‘The X Factor’? L.A. Reid: Well, I decided to do ‘The X Factor’ largely because of Simon Cowell and my admiration for Simon and how he’s developed this show, how he’s developed this format of music television, and how he’s developed his own career. I really admire Simon. When he called me it was a no-brainer because I admire him that much. And the second reason was I love artists and I love music. It’s been rumored that it was coming, but now it’s official. L.A. Reid has officially resigned from his position as the Chairman of the Island Def Jam Music Group. The announcement comes after Reid was revealed to become a judge on Simon Cowell’s X-Factor talent competition. Reid, who had been in charge at the company since 2004, sent the following letter out to IDJ staffers: To my Island Def Jam family: After much consideration, I have decided to leave my position as Chairman of the Island Def Jam Music Group. I have always thrived on growth and the next great challenge, and I look forward with much enthusiasm to what the future holds. I am extremely proud of our beautiful roster and all we have accomplished in my seven years with IDJ. We continue to have incredible success together with today’s most phenomenal superstars Rihanna, Justin Bieber, Mariah Carey, Kanye West, Bon Jovi, Jennifer Lopez, Ne-Yo, Rick Ross, The Killers, The-Dream, Chrisette Michele, Jeezy and Ludacris to name a few. I want to thank all of you for your amazing contributions. With Warm Regards – LA Ironically, it’s also been rumored that Mariah Carey is leaving the label after she delivers one more album to the company later this year. It’s believed that Carey will be returning to her original label home, Sony, whom she left in 2000 after divorcing the company’s president, Tommy Motolla. L.A.
