Madina Lake Bassist Severely Beaten After Intervening In Domestic Dispute

Matthew Leone has had a third of his skull removed to alleviate swelling on his brain. By James Montgomery Matthew Leone Photo: Steve Thorne/ Getty Images Madina Lake bassist Matthew Leone is currently hospitalized, with a third of his skull removed to alleviate swelling on his brain, after he was badly beaten and left unconscious on the streets of Chicago. According to an entry posted Wednesday on the band’s blog , Leone — who is the twin brother of frontman Nathan Leone — attempted to intervene in a domestic disturbance earlier this week and was jumped from behind as he called the police. “A few nights ago, Matthew walked from my apartment, a block-and-a-half down the street to meet a friend for a drink,” Nathan Leone wrote in the post. “Halfway there he saw a man severely beating his wife. Being the most amazing, strong, heroic and incredible person I know — even though the guy was twice his size — Matthew intervened. He managed to subdue this guy for a second and since his wife was beat up pretty good called the cops. As he did, the guy jumped him from behind and beat him. This guy did things I can’t even type. [Afterward], he and his beaten wife left Matthew unconscious on the street. “Matthew is in the hospital with a third of his skull removed as we wait for the swelling in his brain to go down. I’d rather not share any additional information at this time besides the fact that he acted as a hero … and is paying a horrific price,” Leone’s post continued. “Pease send all your love and good energy and vibrations to him. I’ve been and will be next to him throughout the entire recovery process. We don’t know enough details yet about how that will develop. The world can be evil beyond belief and as much as we want this evil eliminated, right now our hearts, heads and energies need to go to my best friend, soulmate, hero and angel, Matthew.” There have been no further updates on Leone’s condition — an e-mail sent to the band’s booking agent was not responded to by press time. The band’s last studio album, Attics to Eden, was released in 2009 on Roadrunner Records. In May, Madina Lake announced they had parted ways with the label and were prepping an EP, titled The Dresden Codex, due this fall. Despite no longer working with the band, the folks at Roadrunner quickly responded to news of Leone’s situation. In an e-mail to MTV News, a publicist for the label wrote that “[Matthew] is such a sweet, lovable guy … [I’m] totally crushed to hear the news, and hoping and praying he pulls through this.”

Eminem’s Recovery Release Date Moved Up One Day

Album will now arrive in stores on June 21, Em confirms in a tweet. By Mawuse Ziegbe Eminem’s Recovery Photo: Interscope Eminem’s hotly anticipated album Recovery is set to land on shelves a day earlier than originally planned. The legendary lyricist’s seventh studio album will now get a June 21 release, according to Em’s label, Interscope, after the album leaked online. Once the full LP hit the Net two weeks ahead of its June 22 street date , many expected the Detroit rapper to move up its official delivery. But initial reports seemed to indicate the June date would stick . On Wednesday, XXLmag.com reported that Interscope rep Dennis Dennehey had confirmed the album would roll out on the originally scheduled Tuesday. Yet just a day later, the label issued a press release announcing a new drop date. Eminem has since confirmed the news, tweeting on Monday (June 14): “It’s true. RECOVERY goes on-sale Monday, 6/21 now.” Steve Berman, vice-chairman of Interscope Geffen A&M, said the public’s hunger for the hip-hop icon’s latest effort had fueled the date change. “We believe fans want to support their favorite artists by purchasing the real album and not a leaked version,” Berman said in the press release. “At the same time, we realize speed is of the essence when fans are so passionate about wanting to hear new songs from such an enormously popular artist like Eminem.” Berman also noted that for devoted fans, adjusting the set’s availability by 24 hours was significant. “Even by releasing Recovery only a day earlier than previously announced, it makes a difference to those fans.” The Recovery leak came only a few days after Em premiered the dramatic video for his single “Not Afraid.” For his latest set, Marshall Mathers reached beyond his Shady family , teaming with stars like Rihanna, Pink and Lil Wayne. The album also features production from new collaborators like Jim Jonsin, Just Blaze and DJ Khalil. Are you satisfied that Em’s album will drop a day earlier? Should the label release it sooner? M.I.A.’s New Album Is Called ///Y/

Singer’s third release, due out July 13, sort of spells out her name. By James Montgomery Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ FilmMagic In a move that’s sure to delight copy editors everywhere, M.I.A. has announced that her new album will be called — and we’re being serious here — ///Y/. She revealed the title on the official site of her label, N.E.E.T Recordings , and posted that the album will hit stores on July 13. She also provided a link to the album’s official first single, a rattling slab of freak-tronica called “XXXO,” which was produced by Rusko and Blaqstarr and manages to work in shout-outs to Twitter, iPhones and Quentin Tarantino, amongst other things. But back to that album title. The series of slashes actually spells out M.I.A.’s real first name, Maya, which would be in keeping with the titling tradition she’s established on her first two records, 2005’s Arular (named after her father), and the follow-up, ’07’s Kala, which is named for her mother. There’s been no official word from either M.I.A. or her label, Interscope, about how to pronounce the title of her new album, and reps had not responded to MTV News’ request for comment by press time. Of course, choosing a title like ///Y/ is just the latest in a series of decidedly less-than-traditional promotion techniques M.I.A. has employed for her third album. Late last month, she premiered a nine-minute video for the song “Born Free” on her official site . Thanks to its scenes of graphic violence, drug use and nudity, the clip was “age-gated” on sites like YouTube . On the same day the video was released, she took over Pitchfork’s Twitter account for a grammatically adventurous afternoon that included her suggesting that Google is involved in a vast conspiracy involving the U.S. government and asking fans to determine the track listing for the album . Oh, and in this week’s issue of NME, she also takes a potshot at Justin Bieber , telling the music mag that the pintsize prince of pop’s videos are “more offensive” than anything she’s ever done. That’s following a series of disparaging comments she made earlier about Lady Gaga . What can we say? She’s been busy. How would you pronounce M.I.A.’s new album title? Damon Dash Resurrects Roc-A-Fella To Start A ‘Positive Movement’

Re-launched label’s first release will be Curren$y’s Pilot Talk, in Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid Curren$y and Dame Dash Photo: MTV News Executive Decisions: Dame Dash When Damon Dash pulled a Roc-A-Fella chain out of his vault several months ago and presented it to Curren$y, it was just a celebration of their friendship. Now, the chain means much more. Dash is resurrecting Roc-A-Fella Records and plans to make Curren$y’s Pilot Talk the label’s first new release on June 15. “I think we just having fun, really,” said Dash, sitting in his office at DD172 next to Curren$y. “[Curren$y] inspired me to dust off the chains. We brought ’em out for kicks, just ’cause we could. Then we was like, ‘F— it, let’s put it out through Roc-A-Fella.’ It was really more something he wanted to do. Basically, ’cause we havin’ such a good time, and the opportunity’s there, we was like, ‘Why not?’ ” “What that means, what that shows me, is that dude thinks as highly of me as I do him,” Curren$y said about releasing an LP on the label Dash co-founded with Jay-Z and Kareem “Biggs” Burke in the mid-1990s. “I know what’s behind that. We all know and the fans know what that represented at the height of it. The aesthetic of it.” Dash said he hadn’t been having “fun” in music since he, Jay and Biggs dissolved their partnership several years ago. But meeting and working with artists such as Curren$y and Jay Electronica who come through his DD172 facility brought the old feelings back. “The funny thing is, people don’t know that Roc-A-Fella wasn’t meant to sell records,” Dame said. “It was meant to show the respect and the honor amongst each other as friends. It was a friendship thing. That’s what people liked. It’s what made Roc-A-Fella appealing. It’s odd, because I f— with [Curren$y]. I kinda like him. When I met him, I wasn’t as familiar with his music. My nephews and Sean O’Connell put me up on him. I liked him as a friend. Then I start seeing he’s super nice with the rhymes, then I started seeing his influence. It’s similar to the way we felt back in those days. It’s working out.” The last album to come out on Roc-A-Fella was Jadakiss’ The Last Kiss in April 2009. The label had been under Jay-Z’s sole custody since the breakup of Hov, Biggs and Dash. “Def Jam or Universal bought the brand. I think the ‘beef’ [with us and Jay-Z] was that Jay made it clear he didn’t want me or Biggs to be a part of it. That’s really where it was at. Now that he doesn’t work for Def Jam anymore, he doesn’t have the right to use the name. So there’s no reason for us not to use it. It’s there, and it’s a brand that’s not being used. So I was like, ‘I’ll take it.’ It always meant something to me.” Dash said he and Curren$y are pushing a positive message about friendship and evolution. “It’s a way more positive movement,” he added about the label’s new incarnation. “It’s what I wanted Roc-A-Fella, what I thought it should be 10 years after I started it.” Dash said he secured the new deal through L.A. Reid and Def Jam, which will serve as a distributor for his records. After Curren$y’s album, the next project coming off Roc-A-Fella will be Ski Beatz’s 24 Hour Karate School mixtape. Reps for Jay-Z were not reached for comment by press time. What do you think about Dame Dash bringing Roc-A-Fella back? Let us know in the comments!
