USC-Hawaii Still On For College Football’s Opening Weekend

Among the weirder penalties levied in USC’s general direction by the Committee On Infractions was the elimination of their 13th regular-season game, which was actually the season opener at Hawaii. Some background on why this is possible in the first place: The Sept. 2 game at Aloha Stadium was in doubt because sanctions levied against USC last week prevented exemptions from the current 12-game NCAA limit. A 1955 bylaw known as the “Hawaii Exemption” permits visiting teams to play one game more than the NCAA maximum if traveling to Hawaii. The rule was established to allow teams to schedule an extra home game to recoup lost revenue from traveling outside the continental 48. It’s Hawaii, however, that would have really suffered the hit to the wallet here with the loss of a home contest, and the NCAA has agreed to push the docking of a 13th game back a year : “We want to thank the committee for granting this relief,” said Todd Dickey, USC’s senior vice president for administration. “It recognizes the serious financial impacts game cancellation would have had to the university and state of Hawaii, as well as the fans and supporters of USC who have already made travel arrangements.” Yes, won’t someone think of the fans with the means to jet off to the islands to watch their team administer a bloodbath? Or of the certain four-letter sports network that stood to lose the nightcap of its opening-day coverage bonanza? The reality is the estimated million-dollar payday is one Hawaii’s cash-strapped athletic department could ill afford to lose. Coincidentally, “a million” is also the number of offensive yards the Trojans are expected to record in Honolulu. (Thank you!)

Christina Aguilera To Sing At NBA Finals Tonight

Singer will perform the national anthem for the second time during the NBA basketball championship series. By Mawuse Ziegbe Christina Aguilera performs the national anthem before game six of the NBA finals on Tuesday Photo: Christian Petersen/Getty Images Christina Aguilera is once again using her formidable pipes to grace the NBA finals: The singer will belt out a rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner” at tonight’s seventh and final game of the series. The singer, whose latest album Bionic recently debuted at #3 , on the Billboard albums chart, sang at Game 6 at Los Angeles’ Staples Center on Tuesday (June 15) before the Lakers defeated the Boston Celtics and tied the series. The Lakers — who have lost their last four game-seven matchups to the Celtics — are apparently hoping Aguilera will bring them similar good luck tonight. The singer may be hoping that the Lakers are a good luck charm for her, as she’s had a some rough luck over the past few weeks . Bionic ‘s first-week sales were softer than expected, she recently postponed her tour until next year, and the response to her sexed-up video for the album’s first single, “Not Myself Tonight,” has been mixed. “I don’t know if it’s because she went away for a while, or because she tried to do something different with this project, but it feels a little crass and calculated,” Entertainment Weekly ‘s Leah Greenblatt told MTV News. “From her choice of collaborators [The-Dream, Polow Da Don, Le Tigre] to her first single, it doesn’t feel fully organic. What’s missing so much with her this time out is that, while she can still sing the crap out of her songs, you don’t get a sense of vulnerability, or even really know who she is.” Related Photos The Evolution Of: Christina Aguilera Related Artists Christina Aguilera

Celtics even the series at 2-2 in Game 4, bench delivered

This game is one of the classic games in the 2010 NBA Finals. Call it slow, call it rough or even call it ugly, but the thought that the bench players were doing the starter job in major minutes in the fourth period that caused them won the game, while the starters were cheering for them made the game memorable for Doc Rivers. Celtics and Lakers traded basket after basket in the first period. Paul Pierce who played limited minutes on the floor due to his foul issues in Game 3, has led all scorers with 10 points after the first period of play in Game 4. The game tied 3 times before Nate Robinson hit a three with 3.4 seconds remaining to end the first quarter. Celtics lead 19-16. In the second period, Pau Gasol and Kobe Bryant carried the load for the Lakers. Kobe Bryant scored his eight of his 12 points at the half, Gasol added five to finish the first half with 13 points, leading all scorers before the break. Pau Gasol denied the three point attempt of Allen but Garnett got the lose ball and pulled a jumper to beat the buzzer. First half ended 45-42 in favor of Lakers. In the third, A fade away jumper from Garnett in the 5:09 mark regained the lead from Lakers. However, Kobe’s 3 three point baskets took the lead away from Celtics. Wallace missed a jumper but Big Baby Davis was there to put the ball back in with a minute remaining in the quarter. The score was 62-60 in favor of the Lakers at the end of the quarter. In the final quarter, the bench squad composed of Nate Robinson, Tony Allen, Glen Davis, and Rasheed Wallace played quality minutes on the floor. They ran good offense and played very good defense as well. In fact, Doc Rivers had to choose whether to keep the bench in, or return to his veterans. As the fourth quarter reached to the point when Doc Rivers traditionally would begin bringing his starters back in, he imposed a rule: If the Lakers got within six points, the bench squad was coming out. “I was really looking at the clock thinking, ‘Man, when is he going to take us out,’ Davis said. “I want to give Doc a hug man. I sure appreciate it.” Big Baby Davis scored 18 points, 7/10 from the field in 22 minutes on the floor. After their loss at home in Game 3, The Celtics were able to retaliate and dominate Game 4. Four of their five starters finished with double figures plus the 36 crucial points off the bench, including the 21 big points in the fourth quarter. At the 2:51 mark, the starters checked back in to finish the game. Paul Pierce finished with 19 ponits, five assists and six rebounds. “I don’t think [the starters] really care, and that’s what makes us ?? that’s why we’re here, it really is,” Doc Rivers said. “Hell, Rondo and all of them, they were begging me to keep guys in. ‘Don’t take them out! Don’t take them out!’ It was great. That was the loudest I’ve seen our bench, and it was our starters cheering from the bench.” Celtics took Game 4, 89-96, series now tied at 2-2. Michelle Obama Ballin’ with Lakers & Celtics

Lakers vs. Celtics – Lose 1, steal 1

Series is now at 2-1 in favor of the Lakers. Lakers lost at home in game 2, but they bounced back and took 1 road game against the Celtics in Game 3, 91-84. This is not like what we have seen in the NBA Finals 2008. And this series is expected to be longer and tougher down to the end. Boston started the early run in the first minutes of the game. Lakers regained their composure and took the lead at 13-12 in the 5:13 mark in the first period. They traded lead 3 times until they tied at 16-16 in the 4:19 mark in the first quarter. Lakers took 5-0 run. Lakers lead at the end of first quarter 21-16. In spite of Kevin Garnett’s ten points and Rajon Rondo’s six in the first quarter, Boston is down 26-17 at the end of the first period of play. Rajon Rondo and Paul Pierce got their early two personal fouls, causing Pierce to sit early to stay away from foul trouble. Kobe Bryant and Kevin Garnett carried their respective teams in the second quarter. Kobe finished the first half with 16 points, grabbed 6 boards. Meanwhile, Kevin Garnett scored 14 ponts and grabbed 5 rebounds. Paul Pierce struggling in the first half, shooting 0 out of 6. He finished the half with 5 points, 1 out of 2 from the three point and hit 2 out of 2 from the free throw line. Lakers moved the ball well. It was a team effort. Kobe did well and so as to Garnett, but the only difference, Lakers’ role players did well of backing up their star player. Boston lacked support on Garnett’s impressive performance. At the half, Lakers led 52-40. In the third, Kobe Bryant missed shots but has made important baskets to keep their lead to 6 points after the quarter. He defended well not only doing his offensive tasks. He ended third quarter with 25 points. Boston reduced the lead to six points after three quarters of play. The score at the end of third quarter was 67-61, in favor of Los Angeles Lakers. Paul Pierce sat after 21 seconds of play in the fourth quarter giving up his fifth personal foul. Even though Pierce is not on the floor, Boston managed to come back and reduced the deficit to only one, 67-68 in the 9:46 mark. Derek Fisher who only scored five points in the first three quarters made his presence felt as the veteran made his shots when the Lakers needed him. Fisher’s defense was terrific, but his offense saved the day, as he scored 11 of his 16 in the final quarter. “Derek Fisher was the difference in the game,” Celtics coach Doc Rivers said. “He’s just a gutty, gritty player. Fisher basically took the game over.” “We didn’t doubt our ability to win here, even though we hadn’t done it in the playoffs,” Derek Fisher said. “We understand that in order to be the best, you have to win wherever, whenever.” More Info..
