Skrillex Nabs Best Remixed Recording Grammy

‘It’s more of really a platform than a genre,’ the EDM star tells MTV News on our live-stream carpet about the dance movement. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by James Montgomery Skrillex arrives at the Grammy Awards on Sunday Photo: Larry Busacca/ Getty Images Skrillex will walk into the Grammy Awards a winner. On Sunday (February 12), the multiple nominee nabbed the Grammy gold for Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical for the song “Cinema” in a pre-telecast ceremony. It marks a big achievement for the rising EDM DJ/producer — and an even bigger achievement for the genre, which has shot through to the mainstream in the last year. Before he took home the prize, Skrill chatted with MTV News on our live-stream red carpet, opening up about his current status as EDM’s “It” boy. “You know what? I don’t really think about that too much because I’m with these guys and I’m doing shows and you don’t have much time to reflect when stuff [is] happening so quickly. And at the same time, it’s more, I’m really focused on my label and my music and touring and making great production,” he explained. “We all live in the moment. “I think EDM, like what you were saying before, what I was just thinking about, it’s more of really a platform than a genre because it pulls and inspires and it resonates through all types of genres and all types of energy,” he told MTV News’ James Montgomery. Skrillex is up for four more awards on Sunday, including Best New Artist. In addition to recognizing EDM throughout multiple categories, the show will also include a tribute to the musical movement . “As DJs we’ve been pushing new and interesting music for a long time and now people are paying attention. It’s a sound and an energy,” said A-Trak, Skrillex’s fellow producer and a Grammy nominee. “It is unusual,” Diplo added on the red carpet, in a discussion of the current spotlight put on EDM. “I mean, I think we’ve all been a part of the music scene for a while. But it’s kind of cool were geeing the recognition.” MTV News’ Sway and James Montgomery will be live from the Grammys red carpet tonight starting at 5 p.m. ET to get reactions from music’s biggest stars on the death of Whitney Houston. Best Movie Scenes Of 2011

MTV News counts down the most gripping, action-packed moments from ‘Harry Potter,’ ‘Breaking Dawn,’ ‘Dragon Tattoo’ and more. By MTV News staff Daniel Radcliffe in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2” Photo: Warner Bros Rare is the moviegoing experience after which you leave the theater having loved each and every frame that flashed onscreen. Even when talking about our 10 favorite films of the year , we didn’t love everything about them, just most everything. More often than not, however, a film’s success and sustainability can be attributed to a few brilliantly crafted key scenes or sequences. They are the moments that make us ooh and aah, laugh out loud, cringe or cover our eyes. In the spirit of the movie moments that have stuck with us and will continue to do so, here’s our list of the 10 best scenes from 2011’s new releases. SPOILERS ahead. 10. Ryan Gosling’s Airbrushed Abs Reveal, “Crazy, Stupid, Love” Let’s face it, ladies have been mooning away over Ryan Gosling since his star-making turn in “The Notebook.” And although the Hollywood heartthrob always looks good onscreen, we hadn’t seen him cash in on the whole dreamboat card until this year’s hit romantic comedy “Crazy, Stupid, Love.” When he removes his fancy dress shirt to reveal a ridiculously chiseled and tanned torso, he really does look Photoshopped, in the best way possible. — Kara Warner 9. The Hour-Long Fight, “13 Assassins” Takashi Miike’s play-out in two parts: one hour of build-up and one hour of bloody chaos. In an attempt to kill a corrupt ruler in feudal Japan, 13 samurai set the most violent version of a “Home Alone” house to trap the target and his entourage of 200 bodyguards. The result lasts an hour and engages you the entire time. — Kevin Sullivan 8. Bridge Fight in “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” The latest, possibly greatest “Apes” movie was already one of the excellent surprises of the 2011 movie season even before the film reached its climax high atop the Golden Gate Bridge. The brillz apes take on the feckless cops in a fight scene that’s tense, cinematically creative and just beautiful to behold. Even more impressive than the throw-down itself is that director Rupert Wyatt manages to slip some genuine character drama into the mix without slowing down the action: Caesar, the ringleader of the simian uprising, goes from reluctant warrior to cold-blooded revolutionary when he finally realizes humans don’t give a hoot about his damn dirty kind. — Eric Ditzian 7. The Final Tap-Out, “Warrior” Sure, there are a few clich

50 Cent, Common, Others Share New Year’s Resolutions

‘My New Year’s resolution is to quit smoking … it’s a very dirty, filthy habit,’ Travie McCoy tells us. By Jocelyn Vena 50 Cent Photo: Larry Busacca/Getty Images Wondering what some of the biggest names in the music industry are resolving to do come 2012? Well, wonder no more. MTV News asked some of those folks just that, and they are dishing on what their New Year’s resolutions are for the next 12 months. “Ah man, so many. So many new things to work on myself. I just got to be conscious, more conscious of myself,” 50 Cent explained. “And try and be a better judge of character with others.” Gym Class Heroes frontman Travie McCoy seems to be taking a page from Fiddy’s handbook and looking to better himself in the new year. “My New Year’s resolution is to quit smoking … it’s a very dirty, filthy habit,” he said. “But not [only] is it my New Year’s resolution to quit, but it’s also my New Year’s resolution to get my friends to quit as well.” Common opened up about the philosophical goal he hopes to achieve in the coming year. “I haven’t thought deeply on it, but I would say I just want to be great at everything I do,” he said. “Greatness.” Some celebrities are planning to look inward in the new year, and others, it seems, want to physically broaden their horizons. Jill Scott said, “I’d like to visit Europe more often next year.” Meanwhile, Evanescence ‘s Amy Lee wants to travel in order to meet more of her devoted fans. “We’re gonna make it a goal to just go to all those countries where we have fans going, ‘Hey come to my country. You’ve never been here.’ That’s sort of our goal for next year is to go everywhere and tour all the places we’ve never been and see the world,” she said. “Have some fun.” Before making those resolutions a reality, many celebrities will be out and about on New Year’s Eve looking to break loose at a number of big New Year’s parties . And MTV will also be getting in on the fun during “NYE in NYC 2012,” which will feature Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato, Mac Miller and more. The show airs live at 11 p.m. ET on Saturday from Times Square, where the famous ball drops. Related Artists 50 Cent Common

Justin Bieber Tourmate Weighs In On Paternity Suit

‘It wouldn’t even be possible for her to get backstage,’ Cobra Starship’s Gabe Saporta tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: WireImage Justin Bieber recently told the “Today” show that it’s impossible he fathered Mariah Yeater’s baby, as claimed in a headline-making paternity suit . Why? The minute he finishes a show, he promptly makes his way from the stage to an awaiting car, so there’s no time for backstage trysts. Cobra Starship frontman Gabe Saporta, Bieber’s onetime tourmate , confirmed the teen star’s story. “It wouldn’t even be possible for her to get backstage,” he told MTV News on the red carpet at the Glamour Women of the Year event in New York on Monday. “The security is so crazy there, you can’t get backstage. And even if you got backstage, first of all, he leaves the show as soon as he’s offstage, which is pretty cool. He runs offstage, gets in a car and jets, because the whole city turns into chaos.” Before the My World Tour wrapped up last month, the band experienced that craziness firsthand, likening it to something straight out of the movies. “There’s a really cool video of us online get mobbed at the airport,” Saporta recalled. “It’s like zombie apocalypse; it’s awesome.” Speaking of awesome, 2011 has been a pretty great year for Cobra Starship. Their infectious, Sabi-featuring track “You Make Me Feel” has been burning up radio, but that Bieber tour is pretty much the highlight of the year for Saporta. “We were playing, like, 50,000-people stadiums,” Saporta said of the South American jaunt. “It was insane, and I’m from South America too, so for me, it was especially satisfying. I gotta say, for being the most famous kid in the universe, he’s remarkably well-adjusted, and … there’s like 75 people traveling with him. It feels like a family, and it was really nice to be a part of that family for a bit of time.” Related Artists Cobra Starship Justin Bieber

Rihanna Confirms Jay-Z Talk That Talk Cameo

‘Yes sir! Jigga man is on the title track,’ Rihanna tweets Tuesday. By Jocelyn Vena Rihanna and Jay-Z Photo: Larry Busacca/ Getty Images It’s been a while since Jay-Z and Rihanna have collaborated, and the release of her new album Talk That Talk on November 21 seems like as good a time as any. Norwegian production team Stargate spilled the beans that Hova will appear on Ri’s next album. In an interview posted on Complex.com , Stargate member Tor Erik Hermansen described the track as a “midtempo banger with hard drums, dirty synths, and Rihanna and Jay at their best. “We are very happy with the song, and Jay’s verse is crazy — same with Rihanna’s part,” he told the mag. Rihanna took to Twitter on Tuesday (November 8) to confirm that her mentor will appear on the song “Talk That Talk”: “Yes sir! Jigga man is on the title track #TTT.” Rihanna and Jay have memorably collaborated in the past on her mega-hit “Umbrella” and his Blueprint 3 track “Run This Town.” The collabo news comes just days after Rihanna released the Talk That Talk track list . Fourteen songs made the final cut; 11 will be featured on the standard version, and the additional three on the deluxe version. For those wondering just what the TTT era of Rihanna will look and sound like, her “We Found Love” video director, Melina Matsoukas , told us it will match vibe of that clip. “I think it sets up definitely the imagery for the album, and it’s in line with what they’re doing,” she said. “So that’s good, and I’m sure there’s plenty more, hopefully.” What are you expecting from the next Rihanna/Jay-Z collabo? Justin Bieber Recruits Boyz II Men For Christmas Album

Pop star credits R&B group’s albums with teaching him how to sing. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: Larry Busacca/ Getty Images Justin Bieber promised that his forthcoming Christmas album will be chock-full of original tunes, but what may be even more exciting for his fans of all ages is the list of collaborators he’s lining up for the project. Via Twitter, Bieber and his team have indicated that Sean Kingston and Taylor Swift have recorded songs with him, and on Tuesday, he tweeted that Boyz II Men are joining the mix. “2day i woke up and realized that the group that made me want to sing @BoyzIIMen are now on the christmas album singing with me. #DREAMBIG,” Bieber wrote . “i used 2 listen to their music and practice the runs. that is how i learned how to sing. now im in the studio with them making music 2gether. “im telling you…never say never…never stop dreaming….never give up,” he continued. “#DREAMBIG. @BoyzIIMen Im honored and blessed. thank u.” The love didn’t end there. Members of the group also took to Twitter to give the 17-year-old some props for extending an invitation to them to work with him on their album. “it was a pleasure! Remember what we talked about in the studio Lil bro! Let’s do it again sooner than later!! … We got love for u lil bro!! Thank YOU, and Thanx for everything u do for ur fans!! I KNOW they appreciate it.” It’s not the first time Bieber and the Boyz have worked together. The iconic ’90s R&B group appeared in his 3-D flick, “Never Say Never,” earlier this year. When the film was released back in March, the singer cited the group as one of his favorite musical influences. “My fans inspire me, as well as my mom inspires me and my dad and God inspires me,” he said. “I’ve looked up to a lot of musicians, like Michael Jackson and Boyz II Men. … I met Boyz II Men. I didn’t get to meet Michael Jackson.” No official date for the Christmas album has been announced yet, but Bieber did tweet this hint: “thinking about starting christmas early…like november. #newmusic.” Related Artists Justin Bieber Boyz II Men

Lady Gaga Apologizes For ‘Retarded’ Comment

‘To anyone that was hurt, please know that it was furiously unintentional,’ singer says. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga Photo: Larry Busacca/Getty Images When Lady Gaga dropped “Born This Way” earlier this year, the tune immediately drew comparisons to Madonna’s “Express Yourself.” Shortly after the song was released, Gaga shared with the world that the pop queen liked the song and gave the pop princess her seal of approval. Now Gaga has once again been asked about the comparisons in a new interview with NME . And she didn’t seem pleased by the line of questioning. “That’s retarded. If you put the songs next to each other, side by side, the only similarities are the chord progression. It’s the same one that’s been in disco music for the last 50 years. Just because I’m the first f—ing artist in 25 years to think of putting it on Top 40 radio, it doesn’t mean I’m a plagiarist, it means I’m f—ing smart. Sorry.” The issue hit newsstands on Tuesday and by late Wednesday night the singer had issued an apology to her fans about her choice of words when defending herself and the chart-topping tune. “I consider it part of my life’s work and music to push the boundaries of love and acceptance. My apologies for not speaking thoughtfully,” she said in a statement to Perezhilton.com . “To anyone that was hurt, please know that it was furiously unintentional. An honest mistake requires honesty to make.” She then went on to quote some lyrics from the feel-good dance track: “Whether life’s disabilities left you outcast, bullied or teased, rejoice and love yourself today.” What do you think of Gaga’s apology for using the “R” word? For those guys who think they have too much testosterone flowing through their veins to check out the film, the Biebs has a message for you. “If I could say anything [to guys who think the movie is only for girls], I would say, like, just give it a chance,” he told MTV News. “It’s just a good movie.
