Larry King as Mr. Civility? ‘The Term Wacko Right-Winger Is Redundant’

For those who think Larry King is the sweet saint of the sensible center, we can always draw up from our Notable Quotables archives some of King’s conservative-bashing venom from the Clinton impeachment period for a rebuttal. Take a look at these: “Shouldn’t someone tell President Clinton that one of his archenemies, Rush Limbaugh, actually said the following last week, speaking in defense of Bill Gates and Microsoft? `It’s OK to lie, everybody lies in business, especially in a civil case.’ Apparently to Rush, lying is OK about business but not about sex.” — CNN’s Larry King in his October 26, 1998 USA Today column, failing to recognize Limbaugh’s parody of how liberals excuse Clinton’s lies but want Gates pursued. “If he had to testify, do you think Thomas Jefferson would have been impeached? No chance, there was no talk radio.” — CNN’s Larry King in his USA Today column, November 16, 1998. “What-if department…What if President Clinton announced a cure for cancer developed by the National Institutes of Health? What would critics say? Would Bob Barr want him impeached for failing to tell us the study was going on? Would Rush Limbaugh decry the President taking credit while admitting getting rid of cancer wasn’t a bad thing? Would Pat Buchanan insist that no nation other than America be given it? Would The Wall Street Journal worry about its effect on pharmaceutical stock prices? And so it goes….” — CNN’s Larry King in his USA Today column, February 15, 1999. ” The term wacko right-winger is redundant. For example, they’re the only people who don’t like being called compassionate. Someone remarked that many now defend the tobacco industry because its products kill people early, saving us dollars in having to care for aged people.” — “Larry King’s People” item in USA Today, March 8, 1999. “I can’t figure out how religious leaders can support the National Rifle Association. One would think that guns and God don’t mix.” — CNN host Larry King in his USA Today column, May 17, 1999.

Larry King Announces Retirement

After a quarter century on the air and amid some pretty significant personal controversy of late, Larry King will hang up the suspenders this fall. The talk show host, 77, announced on Tuesday he will end his run on Larry King Live in the fall but will remain with CNN for occasional specials. The decision to retire was made to “give me more time for my wife and I to get to the kids’ little league games,” the venerable newsman said. Larry and wife Shawn Southwick have been embroiled in marital problems this year, both filing for divorce at one point before calling it off. King was accused of an affair with Shannon Engemann , Shawn’s sister, while she has been tied to their kids’ little league coach of all people. Hopefully Larry and Shawn can work things out. In May, his wife, who has a history of painkiller addiction, was found with empty pill bottles strewn on her bed in a possible suicide attempt . They have been married over a decade and have two young sons. “Larry King defined the art of the TV interview,” CNN said. “His candor, curiosity and compassion are legendary, and his ability to interview people from all walks of life – world leaders, celebrities and everyday people – has made him an icon.” “With this chapter closing I’m looking forward to the future and what my next chapter will bring,” King added. We wish him the best with that.

Larry King To Be Replaced By ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ Judge?

A number of reports claim CNN’s longtime host Larry King is about to be replaced by Piers Morgan, one of the judges on “Britain’s Got Talent” and its U.S. version “America’s Got Talent.” According to the British Telegraph, “The Britain’s Got Talent judge and former newspaper editor is on the verge of signing a four-year contract to take over King’s primetime show in the autumn.” “King, 76, has reigned over American television for decades, with the Larry King Show first airing in 1985. However, his ratings for the first three months of this year fell to an all-time low of just 771,000 viewers, down 43 per cent in the last year.” Yet other reports say Morgan could be replacing Campbell Brown. Here’s the New York Post’s take : The Time Warner-owned cable network has hemorrhaged viewers to Fox News Channel and even lost some to its own sibling service, HLN. There’s a talent drain as well: CNN recently lost Christiane Amanpour to ABC’s “This Week” and Gerri Willis to Fox Business Network. CNN currently has Campbell Brown’s 8 p.m. slot open — although a source said the network is also sounding out possible replacements for “Larry King Live.”   Regardless of who Morgan might replace, wouldn’t this throw a wrinkle into CNN’s “ambition” to be the “straight news” option on cable? On the other hand, as King recently celebrated his 25th anniversary on CNN with half the audience he had when he began a quarter century ago, there is a delicious irony in Larry being replaced by someone from “Britain’s Got Talent.” Think about it.

Larry Birkhead Hangs with Daughter, Paparazzi

As celebrity gossip bloggers, allow us to let you in on a little secret: Often, talentless celebrities in need of money and attention will make a deal with the paparazzi. Meanwhile, in wholly unrelated news, Larry Birkhead took daughter Dannielynn to the farmer’s market in Los Angeles yesterday.
