Saturday was the third day of Comic-Con and judging from the photographic evidence presented ahead, the most star-studded from a geek standpoint. After all, not only were acclaimed directors Steven Spielberg and Francis Ford Coppola on hand, but so too were James Bond (Daniel Craig), Indiana Jones and Han Solo (Harrison Ford), Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Superman (Henry Cavill) and Elvira (Elvira herself). Jon Favreau at Comic-Con Premiere: Cowboys & Aliens is Like Unwrapping a Christmas Gift

The Comic-Con crowd has always been good to Jon Favreau — recall the splash he made here in 2007 with Iron Man , a geek director finding his people — and charmingly (or cunningly, but mostly charmingly) Favreau knows it. So even without a panel to present at Comic-Con this year, he brought his latest film, the sci-fi Western Cowboys & Aliens , to San Diego in a big way: By hosting an enormous premiere filled with cast, crew, hundreds of fans, and a rousing, touching speech that seemed to genuinely come from the heart.

Take note, nerds: Francis Ford Coppola is about to invade your favorite geek event of the year. The director will bring his latest film, Twixt , to showcase at the July convention, where he’ll integrate live music by Dan Deacon to demonstrate the project’s boundary-pushing interactive presentation. What treats are in store for lucky Con-goers?

Miral Actor, Peace Activist Juliano Mer-Khamis Shot and Killed

Sad, sobering news: Israeli actor and peace activist Juliano Mer-Khamis, who played Seikh Saabah in Julian Schnabel and Rula Jebreal’s Miral , was shot and killed by a masked gunman Monday. Worse still, the murder took place just outside his “Freedom Theater,” a drama and culture center that he set up inside a Palestinian refugee camp. Said a Miral rep, “Rula and Julian were very shocked at this tragic news.” [ New York Post ]

Honorary Oscars Announced: Will Jean-Luc Godard Personally Accept His?

Congratulations to filmmakers Francis Ford Coppola and Jean-Luc Godard, actor Eli Wallach, and film historian and preservationist Kevin Brownlow on their imminent recognition at this year’s Academy Governors Awards. They deserve it, but at least in Godard’s case, will the French New Wave pioneer — who historically sniffs at prizes and couldn’t even be bothered to attend his latest film’s Cannes premiere — even show up to accept?
