Source: Nomad / Getty 68-year old grandfather, William Hannah , has died after Salford Royal Hospital in the U.K. mistakingly filled his lungs with cleaning detergent instead of saline. The Hannah family’s lawyer told PEOPLE , During the procedure the doctor found there was no saline solution in the equipment trolley and so asked a healthcare assistant to pass this to him. However, the assistant became confused and instead of providing the doctor with the requested saline, accidentally handed him an unlabelled bottle containing detergent that they had prepared for cleaning equipment. The doctor then unknowingly used the cleaning solution to wash-out William’s lung. Following an internal investigation into the wrongful death, the Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust concluded that the hospital did not deliver the “high standard of care” and offered its apologies to the family. Hearings for the case begin in February 2019. SMH, so sad.
T he police always deny that they have a racial double standard, but an experiment at a Tennessee mall tells a different story. See Also: Cops Defend Unconstitutional Stop And Frisk Tactics As HBCU President Says He Was Racially Profiled A social media post from four white women on Saturday exposed the Memphis Police and the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office for racially profiling a group of African-American men, CBS News reported. This all stems from a video recorded by a former journalist that showed mall security and law enforcement officials stopping four young Black men for wearing hoodies at Wolfchase Galleria in Cordova on Nov. 3. They were escorted out of the mall with at least one of them in handcuffs. The women said they wore hoodies in the same mall without any incident. Racial profiling is a problem nationwide for Black people, but seldom is there any justice for violations. Recourse options are often limited, even when evidence suggests that discrimination occurred. Memphis residents unfortunately lack a functioning police oversight board to address their grievances in this case, Nashville activist Theeda Murphy told NewsOne. “There’s no way to do an independent investigation. In the aftermath of the mall incident, Memphis’ Black community is pushing to have the oversight board fully functioning,” said Murphy, who was involved in the successful effort on Election Day to pass an amendment to create a Community Oversight Board in Nashville that oversees the police. “If a security guard spotted us with our hoods up, they very politely asked us to take them down. One guard said it was because they need to be able to identify everybody’s faces. So we said, ‘Sure,’ took them down, walked on, and put the hoods back up a bit later. Repeat. No threats. Point made,” the Facebook post said. Here’s what happened to the Black men: Kevin McKenzie was inside the Wolfchase Galleria Mall in Memphis when he filmed a security guard at the mall detain a black teen for violating the mall’s dress code policy because he wore a hoodie. When McKenzie inquired further he too was detained. This is outrageous. pic.twitter.com/w0voiu8bth — Simar (@sahluwal) November 14, 2018 “At least a couple of those officers were Black, which shows you that it’s not a Black and white thing but a systemic thing,” Murphy said. “There’s an issue with policing and how officers are trained, how officers see who is a threat and who isn’t. It doesn’t matter if the officers are Black or white because they all get the same training.” SEE ALSO: Andrew Gillum Fires Back At Wannabe Dictator Donald Trump Stacey Abrams Campaign Files Federal Lawsuit For Every Vote To Be Counted [ione_media_gallery src=”https://newsone.com” id=”3836445″ overlay=”true”]
T allahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum shot down President Donald Trump ’s election fraud claim and his call to name GOP candidate Ron DeSantis the winner of Florida’s gubernatorial race. SEE ALSO: Black America ‘Did The Thing’ With High Voter Turnout On Election Day Gillum rallied supporters Monday night at St. John’s Missionary Baptist Church in Boynton Beach, Florida, saying that Trump and current Republican Gov. Rick Scott are trying to rush the recount process, WPEC-TV reported. “If we don’t swear in a new governor until January, what is the rush for you? Count every vote,” Gillum said. “They’re claiming voter fraud because supervisors of elections are counting votes.” That statement was in response to Trump’s tweet on Monday morning. The president stated, “The Florida Election should be called in favor of Rick Scott and Ron DeSantis in that large numbers of new ballots showed up out of nowhere, and many ballots are missing or forged. An honest vote count is no longer possible-ballots massively infected. Must go with Election Night!” Rick Scott is using every stunt within his power to suppress the vote. Keep fighting, Andrew Gillum! https://t.co/PVSZ72RJrv — NewsOne (@newsone) November 12, 2018 Gillum continues his fight to become Florida’s first African-American governor in a race that was too close to call. Unofficial results showed that DeSantis led Gillum by 0.41 percent, ABC News reported. Under Florida law, election officials ordered a machine recount on Saturday because the vote margin was less than 0.5 percent. All 67 counties face a state-ordered deadline of Thursday to finish their recounts. Meanwhile, Gillum isn’t alone in calling out Trump. Circuit Chief Judge Jack Tuter declared on Monday that there’s no evidence of voter fraud in the recount. However, Gillum told his audience that there were voter suppression issues during the election, as well as some irregularities . In one instance, a heavily Republican district allowed 150 voters to scan and email their ballots, which violated state law. “Regardless of what the outcome of what this race is, we want every single vote in all 67 counties — Republican, Democrat or otherwise — that every single vote be counted,” he said. S tacey Abrams is still fighting for every vote in Georgia to be counted, while Brian Kemp ‘s campaign is claiming he won the governor race. However, the Associated Press , NBC and CNN did not call the race. Therefore, Abrams filed a new lawsuit on Sunday. See Also: Bill Cosby Sentenced To 3 To 10 Years In Prison For Sexual Assault Conviction According to the Associated Press , Abrams’ camp “filed a federal lawsuit Sunday asking a judge to delay vote certifications in Georgia’s unsettled governor’s race by one day and to make officials count any votes that were wrongly rejected. If successful, the suit would prevent officials from certifying county vote totals until Wednesday and could restore at least 1,095 votes that weren’t counted.” In a conference call, Abrams’ campaign manager Lauren Groh-Wargom said the state’s numbers “can’t be trusted” and “that 5,000 votes came in Saturday.” She also said, “This race is not over. It’s still too close to call.” Brian Kemp’s team have not responded to the lawsuit. There was another lawsuit filed last week by five Georgia voters asking for Kemp to stop being involved in the election results. He was the secretary of state, which means he oversaw his own election. Even former President Jimmy Carter called on Kemp to resign . Laurence Schwartzol of Protect Democracy, a nonpartisan nonprofit, is a lawyer for the voters and said, “This lawsuit is all about a fundamental unfairness — to have Kemp run the rules of this election, where Secretary Kemp has showed he misused his office in hyper-partisan way.” Kemp resigned on Friday, but many people felt like it was too late and his voter suppression tactics had already done damage. (Photo by Giles Clarke/Getty Images) Judge Loses Re-Election And Decides To Make The New Judges Job A Little Harder A day after Judge Glenn Devlin of Houston lost his reelection bid, he pettily released nearly all of the juvenile defendants who appeared before him, as long as they answered no when he asked if they “planned to kill anyone.” Devlin, one of the 59 Republican jurists in Harris County who was replaced by Democrats, reportedly said: “This is obviously what the voters wanted,” when he released juveniles who have been charged with a wide range of crimes. The republican was clearly angered about being upstaged by a democrat and wanted to go out with a bang.

Getty Images Motel 6 To Pay 7.6M To Help Settle Claim It Called ICE On Latino Guests After a nationwide class-action lawsuit against Motel 6 , the chain has agreed to pay as much as $7.6 million to guests who said their private information was given to U.S. immigration agents, according to court records. Former guests sued the motel chain over privacy violations earlier this year , alleging that the chain handed over their personal information to ICE agents, according to the lawsuit. This lawsuit came after a 2017 Phoenix New Times report that these agents made at least 20 arrests at two Motel 6 locations in Arizona. Under the new proposed settlement agreement, the hotel has also agreed not to share guests’ personal information without a warrant or subpoena, unless necessary to prevent “a significant crime,” according to the court document. “It’s very important in our minds that Motel 6 is putting in place policies and procedures that would prevent this from happening again,” Thomas Saenz–president and general counsel at the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF)–told The Washington Post on Tuesday. MALDEF is who represented the guests in the class-action lawsuit. Now, Motel 6 and MALDEF have announced in a joint statement that the hotel has prohibited employees from sharing such information about its guests. “Motel 6 fully recognizes the seriousness of the situation and accepts full responsibility for both compensating those who were harmed and taking the necessary steps to ensure that we protect the privacy of our guests,” it said. Despite this, the hotel chain still did not admit to any wrongdoing. MALDEF filed this lawsuit back in January, on behalf of seven class representatives from Arizona and one from Washington state. It alleged that employees at Motel 6 locations in Arizona gave Hispanic guests’ personal information, such as their Mexican passports and other forms of identification, to agents from the Department of Homeland Security and ICE without warrants being served. The proposed settlement states that Motel 6 will pay up to $5.6 million (at least $7,500 per guest) to those who were placed in immigration-removal proceedings; up to $1 million (at least $1,000 per guest) to those who were interrogated; and up to $1 million (at least $50 per guest) to those whose personal information was given to federal authorities. Motel 6 will also cover the cost of the former guests’ legal fees.
Photo by Waring Abbott/Getty Images The 9-Year-Old’s Mom Is Lawsuit-Ready A New York MTA conductor is catching all the blame for his reckless endangerment of a 9-year-old boy. According to the New York Post , Melissa Capers is filing a lawsuit against the conductor for an incident that occurred at the Atlantic Avenue Station in Brooklyn on December 10, 2017. Capers says her son was boarding a Manhattan-bound “L” train when the conductor closed the door on him, causing half his body to be trapped outside the train. Then, the train proceeded to move, dragging the kid about 40 feet, according to the lawsuit papers filed on Wednesday in Brooklyn Supreme Court. The boy was with his mom’s boyfriend when the incident occurred and according to Capers’ attorney, Daniel Leav, the kid suffered two bilateral fractures to both femurs. He had to undergo extensive surgery to treat the damages. “He was dragged approximately 40 feet before he fell,” Leav said. The lawyer also said the conductor only stopped the train because “people were screaming.” Since the incident, the boy has been wheelchair-bound and it’s only recently that he started learning to walk again. The kid was identified as “J.C.” in court papers and he was “attempting to enter the train that was in the station when suddenly the train doors closed upon infant plaintiff without warning. He was caused to fall between the train gap and the platform, he was caused to be twisted and dragged for several feet.” Capers is suing for negligence and unspecified damages. “We think the NYC transit system was obviously negligent,” Leav commented. “That was a little boy who was trapped in the doors.” The MTA has yet to respond to the incident or the lawsuit. Though it’s quite common for passengers to get caught in train doors, conductors usually open the doors to let stuck customers in. The conductor accused in the lawsuit has yet to comment publically on his mindstate during the December 2017 incident.
W ith early voting underway in several states, voters have been fighting against a growing list of alleged voter suppression efforts by Republicans. In one of the latest examples, Democratic voters on Monday in an Arkansas county were not able to cast ballots for the party’s secretary of state nominee. See Also: Georgia Isn’t Even Trying To Hide Its Racist Voter Suppression Efforts With This Video Republicans—fearful of the impending Democratic blue wave—were desperately using every trick in the book to retain control of Congress and state governments. Suppression efforts targeting Black voters have already been seen in Georgia , where Stacey Abrams could make history as the first African-American woman governor. Voting rights advocates joined a lawsuit Tuesday against Georgia election officials for the unusually high rate of absentee mail ballot rejects. Republican shenanigans at the polls were not limited to targeting Black voters directly but also Democrats in general. In Arkansas, Garland County election officials had to close three early voting sites on Monday because the Democratic nominee for secretary of state Susan Inman was left off of ballots. The Garland County Election Commission left Susan Inman, the Democratic candidate for secretary of state, off the election ballot. Early voting began without her as an option. Sites had to be shut down. Inman says the glitch left her in “sheer disbelief.” https://t.co/5327njPV68 — Kyle Griffin (@kylegriffin1) October 23, 2018 Also on Monday, five students at Prairie View A&M University, an HBCU , sued Waller County in Texas for allegedly suppressing Black voting rights the Texas Tribune reported. Election officials there violated the federal Voting Rights Act by not providing any early voting locations on campus or in the city of Prairie View, according to the plaintiffs. “There is no legitimate, non-discriminatory reason for defendants to deny opportunities for early voting during the first week to plaintiffs and black voters in Prairie View on an equal basis with other non-black voters of Waller County,” the lawsuit states. Yesterday, we filed a suit in federal court against election officials in Waller County, Texas, who have refused to provide any early voting location on the campus of Prairie View A&M University, a historically black university. In Tennessee, Democratic Party leaders found several problems at early voting sites across the state. The list includes poll workers rejecting some registrations if the applicant didn’t check the Miss/Mrs./Mr. box, as well as electronic voting machines that didn’t allow voters to select the candidate they wanted or switched candidate selections. “What troubles us is it seems to be favoring one party and one type of voter over another. It seems to be suppressing voters that would vote for Democrats, voters of color,” party chair Mary Mancini told the Commercial Appeal .
